There’s a special area within the arena dedicated to students to spectate battles with one another. There’s plenty of seats amongst the public, too, should you want to sit with the crowd — there's an abundance of energy that’s palpable. People are enjoying themselves, going wild with each match. Although, it’d be a lie to say if some of them were a bit one sided.

My match was over. The results weren’t as important as the fact it was the second time I had been paired up with Jun. The first time we worked together was during a battle against the teachers. Her quirk was powerful but was her mastery over it able to rival Gen’s? He boldly declared that he had access to a quirk that allowed him to collect them all.

There were limits. There were always limits. And I was interested in seeing what I could glean from their confrontation. So, as the two opponents step into the ring…

Let’s see what happens.

funny little thing about tvs you find in the dumpster… sometimes they work if you plug them in. one of the perks of taking over shinjuku is that people were willing to help me out if i asked for it. it wasn’t true at first but maybe word spread after the last few attempts to kill me. i get it. i’d be upset over losing a friend, i still am. it’s why i don’t like… specific types of people, even i try to befriend them anyway. but i think everyone deserves a chance so i’m glad they’re giving me one.

anyway, we got this whole set up bc some guy told me a tournament was happenin at uaua. that’s pretty cool to me. getting to see a bunch of other people really care about something and pour their hearts out… man, i’m going to cry thinking about it—

e was certainly theatrical, and that was about all Farrin knew of Kurokami Gen. Jun had mentioned the name once before, but that’s not why he was here. Mood Ring was a contemporary. Capable and strong. Though they held differing opinions on how best to approach heroism, namely when it came to tactics and strategy, Farrin respected her capabilities and commitment. He hadn’t matched with her during the festival’s combat challenge, so this was the next best thing--to see what Jun was really capable of.

Of course, it would have been easier to lock in and focus without all the cheers and jeers. Some of the crowd kept on booing even after the match began as Jun moved to close in with that hammer. 

"C'mon, leave it out," Farrin murmured.

There had to be a reason she was closing distance rather than pulling out the big guns. Just what was this guy's quirk? Probing for weakness was a valid strategy, but Jun had a mean range game, so there had to be a reason she was giving that up.

Her body was still sore from her own matches but she wasn't going to miss the opportunity to witness a match put on by her peers. There was valuable information she could learn from studying others, and as a manufacturer it was good to be in the know about the students on the hero course. Besides, she had a feeling if she went to the spectator area there was a good chance she wouldn't bump into Ylva and at least so far that appeared to be true. She had never gotten that mad on camera before, or even in front of a crowd, and while her pride may have taken a hit she had to move past it. Find a way to grow and learn from this event.

With the match about to start, Masao couldn't help but be intrigued by the two competitors. One was Junsuina Kanjo, which came as a surprise to her. Following the events of Dream World she thought for sure that Jun may be too out of it to compete, but that did not appear to be the case. Perhaps that only highlighted how little she knew about her. Similarly, she didn't know much about Kurokami Gen, other than he had a dramatic flair about him as she saw months ago. That, and the specifics of his quirk remained a mystery to her. If he was going to use it here today, maybe she could learn something new from observing their match?

When Gen made his entrance... Well yeah, that was to be expected of him.

Once the match kicked into gear she pondered the opening move. ''Intriguing. Kanjo-san's quirk is of the versatile nature, yet her opening move is to run at her opponent with a hammer. At a first glance it appears flawed, but there is no telling what her battle plan is.''

“i think it’s that one. mm i could be wrong though.”

“No way. You’re an idiot. It’s clearly this one.”

by this point some others had joined me. a small little side betting crowd formed and while i didn’t have any money people were still arguing with my calls. a few sided with me but they were far an in between. then again, they didn’t have any reason to believe my hunches. they tended to work out in my favor, usually, but sometimes i was completely wrong, too. but it’s a 50/50… can’t you just… guess and be fine, usually?

“How about a wager then?”

“uhhh like what?”

“If I’m right, then I'm the head of Shinjuku. And if you win… Well, what do you want?”

“mmm. nothin’.” yeah not a lot i could think of right now. maybe a moldy italian sub or something but i was saving that at the dumpster back home. “but sure let’s do it.”

“Are you insane? Why would you risk it for nothing?”

“idk it seems fun plus can’t i just take it from you the way i took it from the other guy? you gotta accept the challenge right?”

hat's more like it," Farrin murmured beneath the vivacious currents and plaudits. This was methodical. A more thought-out maneuver that weaved Jun around the threat and layered one construct atop another. Cannons and anchors, that had Mood Ring written all over it. 

One question gnawed at Farrin's, though. Just what was Gen's quirk? His first guess was some form of elemental emission, given the fire, electricity, and ice display, but the man appeared to split in two–even if the double turned out to be an illusion or otherwise capable of teleportation. The truth behind his quirk was hidden among a smokescreen of variables. Dual-quirks existed, but the lad pumped out some four or so abilities already.

He certainly made for an interesting matchup, but no defense was without weakness, and all those defenses inevitably fell to a proper offense. And now Jun was back on the attack. At first glance, Gen's more varied options might intimidate, but Jun's cannons served the same purpose as those direct-range attack options. It was the utility he possessed that was the real issue. "C'mon now, yuv' got this." If she kept the pressure on him, something would have to connect eventually. It was all about staying on the attack.

"no worries friendo." well, looks like he didn't wanna fight to keep the title if i lost it. although, maybe he could change that rule? i'm not even sure, honestly. but it's no sweat off my jean leg. sooner than later it's confirmed i was right but not for the reasons that i thought. well, they weren't reasons but abstract feelings that i kind of follow but they were misguided, too. i got lucky honestly. "looks like i woulda won anyway~"

"Something's not right." he usually wasn't this talkative. maybe the new heroes were scaring him a bit? i get it. it was pretty scary but sometimes you had to be scared in life. for no good reason either. "How can he do so much? And if he can, why haven't we heard about it until now?"

"...huh?"

"Fire, lightning, ice... cloning..." frustrated... "This is the kind of weapon heroes keep secret. If they're willing to show us this... as a work in progress. There might be something more dangerous they're hiding."

"wow, really?" there were so many people around me nowadays. don't think i really get how they operate but it is fun to listen to their theories.

"What's your analysis of the situation?" I sat next to Farrin. While I was able to learn more about him both through this event, and a brief trip to the islands between days, there was still other aspects of his psyche I were curious about exploring. Our interaction had brought me a little leeway, I'd hoped. "She ran in against our opponents, too." A match we had 'won' at the cost of humiliating our opponents. Me, intentionally. Jun? Not so much.

"Does she have something to prove?"

 imagine most o' us do," Farrin answered. His words lacked the sharpness they might have possessed a few days prior. It wasn't an attack but an admission. Rahul wasn't reaching for the lofty idealism inherent to true heroism. He wanted to protect his own. Farrin didn't agree with it exactly, but he understood it, and some certainly shared less authentic motivations among hero society. 

"Years spent in preparation. Blood n' sweat, all o' it. If there's anywhere, anytime ta' take yer' measure, it's here." He paused again, his left hand shielding his eyes from the flash-bang effect of Gen's quirk. Another feckin' tool in the box. "But, there's certainly somethin' more ta' this. I've seen Jun in a scrap. She's certainly dialed in big time 'ere." 

The chains whipped about the arena below. If she succeeded in drawing the lad in, she might just land the decisive blow she was looking for. But again, there was no telling with a quirk like Gen's–whatever the hell it was. Maybe he would teleport again, or was that reserved for his double earlier? 

"It's a hard call without knowin' the extent o' his abilities," he turned the conversation back to Rahul's original question. "I've seen plenty o' utility quirks, but none like this. Usually, I'd bet on specialized abilities n' practiced skills over a jack o' all trades. Train ta' do one thing a thousand times over n' odds are yuh' always know how ta' press yer' win condition. This might be different, though. Question isn't what can he do, but what can't he do. All depends on how much he's trained wit' each o' those skills he possesses."

"Right, but still feels subopti—" That was a big hit. There's a cheer starting to form. Maybe she understood the details of his quirk. "He's over reliant on his quirk." It all clicked. "It's a riskier gambit, but if he's not already out cold, then the next hit should take him out."

He risked exposing his quirk to the world for that performance? With infinite quirks, he still ended up a one trick. Power always falls into unworthy hands.

oh my gosh that was such a clean hit and it looked really strong too! what was craziest is that if he had all his quirks then maybe he was using his top defensive one’s too and jun was just that strong! could prolly beat me in an arm wrestling contest, too with knees like those! i mean, unless her strength was only in her knees? but i don’t think so. i have strong knees and the rest of me is strong so i’m pretty sure about that. are people are cheering in the crowd, too.

“mood ring…” what a weird name. “i dont really get it. or maybe it’s cos he’s almost out of the ring or somethin’?”

“Her constructs are fueled by her emotions.”

“whoa how do you know that?”

“I just put two and two together.”

“what does four have to do with this?”

“I—” left him speechless. if you just keep asking questions, people hit a wall where they don’t know the answer either. it’s not their fault. a person can only be so smart, y’know? “Just keep watching.”

“i think it’s over though?”

“Don’t count him out just yet. To go into this while not being able to take a hit would be pretty reckless.”

 solid blow. And one that certainly landed. Gen wore pain for all to see. No teleportation or disappearing act. He had limits. That much was certain. 

"Definitely," Farrin agreed.

It was the reason he trained so intensely day in and day out. Every moment, every grain of sand stretched out into a mound so that he could make the best use of time. Developing one's quirk without honing the body and mind was a recipe for disaster. A recipe, it appeared, Gen followed to the letter. It wasn't over yet, though. Jun held the advantage now, but-

"A cornered animals fights hardest."

If Jun could keep her head about her and maintained control, she would likely win. Still, only a fool would count Gen out with such an odd quirk. Who knew what shape his ace in the hole came in?

I don't understand the full nature of her quirk, but based on what Gen's actions, I could deduce that her constructs need some kind of resource or else he would have replicated it earlier in the match. And now, she was forced to make an aggressive approach.

Now that he had her quirk, her asymmetrical advantage had disappeared. The only thing she could leverage was her physical strength. "Are you friends with either of these two?"

arrin stood at the sight of Gen's crimson copy of Emotion Battery. The jagged barbs and wiring swept over Jun, but she maneuvered between the worst of it. Her strategy had backfired, and Farrin couldn't help but agree with Rahul. He would have stayed at range with firepower like hers and bombarded the enemy. She wanted it over and done with, though. To take her opponent down in one fell swoop. She was on the ropes, but she wasn't done yet. 

"Agreed, but I wouldn't count her out jus' yet. Was only a few weeks ago we fought some fella that could copy her quirk," he blurted out. Technically, he could operate as a hero in emergencies, but maybe it wasn't for the best to delve into the details. Nobody needed to know the frequency with which he ran into trouble. That aside, this still wasn't the same. He had Jun's bag with the gems in it. This was going to cost her one way or another. 

"Eh, kinda." He wasn't exactly sure how to answer the question. They certainly got along far better than when they met. Still, Farrin and Jun really only interacted in official capacities or when checking notes against one another on how to navigate a proper scrap. "Yeah, she's sorta a friend." Maybe they weren't all buddy-buddy with one another, but no matter how infrequent their conversations, they had each other's back when it mattered. That counted for something. That and, well, he felt himself rooting for her. Internally rather than externally, but he was in her corner on this one.
