A

nother day spent atop Farrin's grassy hill at the back of UAU's training fields. He had settled on a nickname "The Dojo" for his little training space. Sada had a few back-to-back classes while Farrin was free for a few hours. Free time without Sada meant time spent running drills and testing himself. The gravelly training fields and running tracks were awash with enthusiasm and energy. Students honing their bodies, skills, and abilities. Good. They would need it. There was a definitive lack of challenge from most of the time-turner's peers.

The freshman dropped from his standing position onto his butt, sitting now, watching over the fields. Sweat rolled down from his mane over his brow and neck. He didn't need a sparring or workout partner to work up a sweat. Roiled power pushed through the air with his every punch just a few moments prior. He had earned himself a short break.

A welcome breeze kicked up, whisking away a few beads of sweat and casting them into the grass. Food. That's what he was missing. Some food. His hunger was confirmed by the comical growl of his stomach. Yup, it was nearly time for lunch.

"But what time we lookin' at exactly?" He muttered, digging out his pocket watch.

Half past three. His legs protested against the thought of movement, but he had grown quite accustomed to denying them rest. Still, he would sit for another few minutes watching the training field. A few of the spars taking place below looked interesting enough.

15:30. Status: Medication almost empty, please refill. 38.1°C (100.6°F)
An ultrasonic beeping from the medical device on Kupo's left wrist snapped him out of the focus he'd built up over this training session. He slowed and came to a stop on a long running track, where he'd been endurance running to build up his stamina. Now though, it seemed like he was gonna be forced into an early break. He looked at the small display on the dark grey device and turned off the beeping with a gasp. "Oh heck, that's a hyper! Better fix that~" He could feel the telltale signs of overheating now that he'd slowed down, the worrying lack of sweat as his medication ran dry.

Kupo collected his bag from the floor and ascended a small hill to the nearest shade he could find, waving to the other student up there who seemed to be watching the training. He sat down under the shadow of a tree not far from Farrin, and got to work. Kupo peeled off the small gauze patch covering a cannula on his left arm, wincing as he twisted the cannula shut. He then opened the back of his device (similar in appearance to a smartwatch and insulin pump), unscrewing a small empty glass vial and setting it aside on the grass. Finally, he reached a hand into his long, fluffy tail and retrieved another vial, this one filled with clear liquid. Kupo screwed this into the device and kinda reversed the process, twisting the cannula again and getting another small gauze bandage out of his bag. With that, Kupo breathed a sigh of relief, with the final step simply being taking a drink of water from a 1L (33.8 fl. oz.) bottle he'd had in his bag.

When he'd finished his little cooling down routine, Kupo looked over to Farrin with his normal bright green eyes and warm smile. "Hi! Sorry, that was probably a little weird to watch. I'm Jason Riviera, but most people call me Kupo! Pretty sure I've seen you in some Heroics classes, though don't think I got your name?" He had hopped the very short distance over, now sitting closer to make conversation less awkward. He (with a tiny amount of visible hesitation) offered Farrin a handshake (which allowed the fur-covered paw pads on his fingertips & palm to be seen). Similarly, his smile showed sharp & enlarged canine teeth, which stood out among his other teeth.

arrin's eyes traced the fox on approach. Another of his peers willingly crossing the line of demarcation. It was one drawn by word of his trouncing those bullies from orientation. Ever since that little scuffle, only a small handful of his classmates dared to enter his grassy domain at the edge of the training fields. One would think his victory over their ilk would draw the student body closer, but maybe he had frightened them off. It wasn't worth the time and thought he was putting into it. A few exceptions aside, he preferred his own company.

"Farrin, Farrin O'Rourke," he offered his name. "N' no need ta' apologize. Whatever keeps yuh' goin n' all that."

Farrin took Jason's hand for a firm shake. Yeah, he preferred his own company but the time-turner wasn't rude. If the fox-fella needed medication, then he needed his medication. Or whatever the heck was going on. It wasn't really Farrin's business. The paws didn't even come as a surprise. Barty, one of the heroes of Above & Beyond, who acted as Farrin's guardian in Japan, had bear-like paws so it wasn't unfamiliar territory. 

"N' yeah, I think we do share some classes."

Hero ethics and a few more of their practical classes. Farrin wasn't good with names but it was hard to forget someone that stood out as much as Jason did, even among the varied student body of UAU. The time-turner wasn't about to make conversation of it, but Jason was rather short.

"So, how yuh likin UAU so far? E'erythin yuh though it would be?" 

Small talk. Not territory he preferred to navigate often but the fella seemed friendly enough. No reason to turn him away. Meanwhile, Farrin's gaze would shift downhill toward a sparring match between two of their peers. Dissecting combat was one of his favorite pastimes. One of the students grew bone-like weaponry from his arms while the other began to glow with an azure aura. Their match was about to begin.

As Farrin introduced himself, Kupo realised 3 fairly simple truths at the exact same time: Farrin O'Rourke is an Irish name, English is spoken in Ireland, and he himself is more fluent in English than Japanese. Realising this, he pretty quickly shifted to speaking his first native language. Kupo spoke with a subtle Received Pronunciation accent, his voice just as high and childish (though not loud) as it was in Japanese. "Nice to meet you, Farrin! It's good to meet another student from the Isles! Though, there do seem to be a few of us. Pretty sure I heard Leonid muttering about it in class at some point." Kupo's sensitive hearing was often a double-edged sword, hearing things that'd usually be quiet enough for people to keep it to themselves. He often knew exactly what others thought of him, for better or worse. Speaking of, his attention snapped to the noise of the sudden sparring match about to begin, combatants standing just far enough away for their banter (or trash talk) to be indecipherable from where Kupo sat. He couldn't help but look over, but he still picked up the question from Farrin. "I've actually not been here as long as most, I was a week or two late cause of a holdup. As far as what I've seen so far though, it's all really big! Of course, I knew it would be, but it's always cool to walk through doorways and halls built to accomodate for people 4 times my height. I'm also really liking my classes so far, most of my Heroics electives are on the Rescue track. What about you?" He turned briefly to ask the question, then back to the other students as he noticed Farrin also watching them. "Wonder what their fighting styles are like..."

h, so Jason here was one a limey. Some of Farrin's more distant relatives might have had a few jokes to crack, but to the time-turner, it really made no difference. Not unless he started insulting the Emerald Isle. He didn't seem the sort. More of a one-part friendly, one-part inquisitive kind of concoction. 

<Likewise. N' yeah, seems ta' be a bit more than a handful made it out 'ere. Even more, if yuh count the West in general. Dun' mind the ol' lion though. I'm pretty sure he was around 'ere before the Quirk Emergence n' from what I gather Japan was quite different then,> he answered in English.

The two best universities Farrin knew of in regards to heroics were UAU and the Howlett Institute back stateside. Howlett could be a bit more extreme, as expected when considering American heroics, but both schools got results. So, of course, both also so massive influx from those possessing powerful quirks and goodwill, probably some trauma too, around the world. Would Farrin had ended up there had things back home not gone to shite? Who knew? It didn't really matter. He was here now, and he was fighting to become his best self. 

<Jus' wait 'till yuh meet Zenkai n' Shana,> Farrin mused. Farrin was tall, but those two were giants.

<N' most o' my classes are along the combat track,> Villain Apprehension really, but they all knew what it really was. <I went ta' a Hero Prep school before UAU so I'm familiar wit' some o' the earlier material they're goin' over but no doubt UAU's more intense n' far better equipped.>

Back in Hero Prep, the few times the teachers sparred with their students, it was incredibly obvious they were taking it easy. Here, well, Farrin sparred with Leonid in his first week and nearly had his arm broken. Almost toppled the big cat though. That had earned Farrin a few more reputation points around campus.

<Can't speak fer' Boy-Blue over there,> Farrin nodded towards the kid with the azure aura, then shifted his gaze to the other student, <but Bone-Blades 'ere is definitely a sword dancer o' some sort. I've seen similar quirks. They spin a whole lot ta' confuse n' frighten their enemies while closin' the distance. I'm bettin he does somethin similar.>

The match began with the Boy-Blue, as Farrin nicknamed him, firing a few spheres of similarly blue light toward Bone-Blades. Then, the spheres exploded. Bone-Blades was fast though, he leaped to his left, then charged forward - and then came the spin moves Farrin anticipated. He spun like a top, closing in on Boy-Blue. 

<Called it,> Farrin said with a smirk.

Kupo nodded along as Farrin spoke. He'd certainly read that Japan was a lot more xenophobic before the Advent of Quirks, but that the inherent diversity caused by Quirks had caused something of a paradigm shift, even moreso with the number of people who had begun looking to Japan as the leading country for Heroics, and UA its leading academy. He noted the two mentioned people for later, not having met either yet, and perked up at Farrin's next comment. "Yeah, prior study is definitely helping. I took Heroics as part of my A-Levels and finished early to attend here, so most of what I missed here early on I already knew. It's almost scary how many of the people only taking mandatory Rescue classes didn't know basic First Aid. Or how many people weren't taught any Hero Law definition of 'excessive force'." He giggled, laughter hiding some discomfort brought on by that specific notion. As the sparring began in earnest, he joined Farrin in watching analytically. As someone with a very early start (and a very professional mentor) in this kind of combat training, watching other students was always fascinating. "Right, blade dancers. Usually the trick there is rushing them with something that traps their weapon or trips 'em up... looks like Boy-Blue is a zoner, though." It felt weird to use fighting game terminology to describe actual fighters, but it was true to some extent. He was very familiar with those kinds of Emitters whose main strategy was to use their Quirk to maintain distance from melee opponents and attack at range, his twin sister and primary sparring partner of 11+ years was one of them. "Only way to beat a zoner is to close the distance and force them into melee, seems like Bone-Blades is gonna get an early advantage there." He was immediately on-board with the 'bit' of Farrin's monikers for the two duelists, and laughed again at the names themselves, this time softer and quieter.

nd Farrin nodded along in kind. He couldn't help but notice some similarities among the combat track. Too many students relied on their quirks alone to pass the Entrance Exams. The definitive lack of martial prowess among his peers was profound. 

<I've noticed some comparable issues among our peers. Overly reliant on their quirks wit' no apparent experience in hand ta' hand combat or other forms o' self-defense n' the like.> 

As Jason said, many were also unfamiliar with the many laws erected around hero society, but that was a little less surprising. How many people really dug deeply into their country's system of laws unless it was necessary? The written component to the Entrance Exam was important, but the practical test weighed more heavily on each participant's overall score. You would think for the sake of that exam alone the students would have trained in some form of martial combat. Luckily, the two sparring students didn't seem to stand in the camp of the uninitiated. 

Farrin smirked at Jason's use of gaming terminology. In his previous life, Farrin would sneak into the arcade when he scrounged up enough loose change or the rare few dollars somebody dropped... or when he got a hold of someone's wallet. He wasn't the best at fighting games, but his time-turned senses could actually be used to greatly improve his performance. 

Memories of yesteryear faded in favor of the display below. Bone-Blades crossed the distance and was swiping wildly at his opposition, but Boy-Blue wasn't entirely unfamiliar with close-range combat. He dodges the worst of it until one slash caught his arm and a boot shoved into his core, knocking him back. Still, it was an impressive display of evasion. Blue, rolled backward, then leaped onto his feet, leaving another explosive sphere behind to do exactly as Jason said - zone. The sphere burst, causing no damage to Bone-Blades, but giving Blue some distance to work with.  

<Seems as these two have some idea o' what they're doin' though. Bone-Blades may've scored some blows, but the fact that Boy-Blue is still up n' ready speaks ta' his experience. What do yuh' think will happen next?> He asked, curious to hear Jason's own observations.

The trend Farrin pointed out was one that resonated heavily with Kupo. "Yeah, that sounds about right. I guess I'm lucky I don't really have to think about that. My Quirk's always on, so it's always been part of my fighting style, always a factor." He'd always required athletic training and martial arts to be effective even with his Quirk, a far cry from those whose training of the two aspects was separate. As the fight continued, Kupo watched as the melee fighter closed in, slicing at his opponent before he could be repelled once more.
In his mind's eye, a similar fight between himself and his sister Maki played out. Of course, they were both familiar with each other's fighting styles so him getting knocked back had been her creative spacing rather than an error on his part of pushing her away. It was the first time he had won a sparring match with her since she'd become familiar with her Quirk.
Attention focusing back on the match, Kupo took a bit to answer Farrin's question. "It depends how smart Bone-Blades is. If he changes his pattern of approach in an unpredictable way, then he'll probably get up close again. I have a feeling he won't, though. Our brains are wired to keep doing something if we've seen it work before, even if it was a fluke!" Kupo's tail had been swaying behind him for the full conversation, but now it could be more accurately described as wagging. He was really into this analysis now, eyes sparkling. "Plus, he doesn't seem like the smartest cookie. When he got in close, he didn't go to outmaneuver or cover angles of escape, he just started swinging. It seems like he's practiced his technique a whole lot, but not against other people. If he tries the same thing again, he's gonna get caught with a blast or blocked!" His voice rang with emphasis from excitement, that much was blatant, but it didn't seem to raise in volume at all.

note: Kupo doesn't actually have paws, forgot to clarify earlier. Normal hands w/ paw pads (colloquially referred to as 'toe beans') on palms & fingertips.

hough the time-turner had his plethora pick of reasons to be down, he found himself entertained by the observations he and Jason made regarding the match. He, Jason, and Natsumi would need to watch some high-level sparring matches between heroes or some sort one day. So, despite the frustrations Farrin faced off the field, on the field he was still every bit his ever-so-slightly cheerier self. Enough that the smirk he'd been wearing clung to his face as the Bone-Blades made his move. 

The student wound up, then sprung forward toward Boy-Blue. The winds were made visible as they spiraled around the Bone-Blades, his speed dusting his previous jump, but as Jason said, he repeated his pattern. So, Boy-Blue wasted no time leaving not one, but three spheres behind. And as soon as Bone-Blades landed - the spheres exploded. 

Bone-Blades was awash with sapphire light. The explosions threw him back several meters, the students landing in a roll until he jabbed his blades into the gravel below. He sprung up, then hesitated. The damage was visible. He could still fight, that much was clear, but should he?

<Well, lookit that! On the money wit' that one.>

Farrin figured Bone-Blades possessed little patience and would charge again, but Jason had it down to the letter. Both combatants, while better off than many of their peers, were still clearly novices. It was a game of whose go-to strategy would prevail. 

<He's winded, but he'll keep goin'. I think yer' still on it though, he's gonna settle on what's comfortable again.>

As if on cue, Bone-Blades leaped again. The winds whipped into a frenzy again as he crossed over to Boy-Blue, but this time Boy-Blue took a step forward, then laid out several spheres just ahead of himself. Bone-Blades leaped again, uncaring for the most obvious trap, then Blue backpedaled and set the explosive off. The damage was guaranteed, Blades engulfed again, Blue carried away by the extreme forces of his own quirk. Blades rolled away but rose once more. This was not a good idea. 

<C'mon, I think we better got down there n' stop 'em from goin' again.>

With that, Farrin was up and on the move, stepping down the hill.

Thanks to a combination of the spectacle of the fight and the fact that Farrin also seemed to be enjoying their analysis, Kupo was almost enthralled by the experience. Seeing his predictions come true, though, another feeling took over to break his immersion. Concern. He'd seen plenty of his classmates in college fall into the same pattern. Sparring taken too far, neither opponent caring for their mutual safety as they got lost in the battle fervour. It was a worrying tendency among prospective heroes, something that could be truly dangerous during actual hero work. He watched Bone-Blades repeatedly bash his head against the wall, only to be laid flat. He watched Boy-Blue counter the exact same way every time, smiling and making no effort to bring the battle to a close despite suffering similar attrition. The concern quickly dawned on Kupo's face then, eyes wide and tail slowing to fall still behind him. He hopped to his feet alongside Farrin, nodding quickly at his suggestion. "Agreed. They could really hurt themselves." It was audible in his voice too, a barely-audible whining to his words like a puppy concerned for its owner.

Kupo bounded down the hill in two strides, approaching the sparring grounds quickly after this. Switching back to Japanese, he calls out to the one with the blue energy Quirk. He hoped his memory of the other student's name from a couple shared classes wasn't incorrect. "Hey, Fujisaki-kun! Just a moment, are you guys okay?" The question was genuine, Kupo standing directly between the two combatants, in their path. Sometimes his cute/innocent appearance happened to be very good at getting Kupo what he wants, a prime example being that he hoped neither would (in the moment) risk harming him by continuing their sparring match with him in the way. He looked back towards Farrin, knowing that once both of them were involved, it shouldn't be too hard to speak (or knock) some sense into these knuckleheads.

he fact that Jason was up and on his feet and ready to go in the same moment Farrin spoke more to his inner potential heroics than the sparring match did for Boy-Blue & Bone-Blades. To Farrin at least. Plenty of people had strong quirks, or at least quirks that could be trained to become strong. Only a few, however, were ready and willing to throw themselves into potential danger for the sake of others. Heroism was altruism at its heart. Putting one's own safety on the line in service to others. That was heroism done right. 

Farrin darted down the hill beside the fox. While Jason veered off toward Blue, apparently Fujisaki, judging by the fact that the student actually stopped, Farrin made for Blades. The time-turner's tendency to avoid people haunted him on this particular occasion. It had come back to bite him in the butt. He didn't know Bone-Blade's name, and the student's arms were still coming up, the boy leaping forward toward Fujisaki - and Jason. 

"Slow it down, lad!" Farrin shouted as he cut across the distance. 

"Get out of the way! The match isn't over yet!" Blades shouted, spinning mid-air into his twirl attack. 

The repeated tactic would accomplish nothing, even if Farrin and Jason weren't in the way. It was clear Fujisaki had Bone-Blades number down. But if Blue were to set off one of those explosives now, not only would Blades be at real risk, but he and Jason were in the blast zone. So, Farrin intervened directly. The time-turner tackled Blade's spinning top attack head-on. Slashes and cuts danced across his workout attire, drawing blood, and splattering it against the grass, but Farrin managed to latch onto Blade's arms and pin him to the ground. He could have fired up his quirk and just hit the guy, but there was a fair chance that even a single heavy blow in his condition might put the boy out, so Farrin had to eat the damage to contain the threat. 

"Now, I asked yuh' nicely ta' slow it down. Yuh', know, think things through. This fight is over whether yuh' want ta' accept that or not," Farrin said through grit teeth.

Kupo reacted too late. He foolishly presumed that Bone-Blades wouldn't endanger others for the sake of 'finishing' (bashing his head against a wall in) a sparring match. Because of this error in judgement, or so Kupo thought, Farrin had gotten hurt. Not severe, but still quite the injury. If he'd acted quicker, he could've taken the guy down in mid-air, he was sure of it. So, seeing what did occur, Kupo sprang into action once again. "Oh no! One moment, I'll go get some bandages for you guys!" He crouched and leapt back towards the hill. From there, it was a few seconds at his pace before he retrieved his backpack (with a Pokémon-esque fluffy monster design) and bounded back towards the trio. He pulled a green box out of his bag, opening this to retrieve (bio-safe) antiseptic wipes, plasters (band-aids) and a roll of bandages.

He'd offer this to Farrin first, and if accepted would begin the quick process of cleaning and covering his cuts. While he did this, Kupo looked up to the other two combatants, looking heartbroken. "I think it was clear enough how that would've played out, right? Both of you would've kept repeating the same moves over and over, until the one with the less durable skull to keep bashing passed out. Neither of you, at any point, checked on the wellbeing of your opponent or tried to bring the match to a close. You-", he looked pointedly at Bone-Blades, "-didn't even stop, or reassess the situation when what could've been civilians came into your path. I'd expect better from future heroes, especially you Fukisaki, given what I heard of you in Ethics class." Another pointed look, the other way. But, as Kupo finished dressing what he could see of Farrin's cuts, his expression changed from one of sorrow, to one of hope. He began attending to Boy-Blue, who was also obviously cut-up. "But, it's alright! I know you guys can learn from this! I know you can be better. Heck, your actual fighting was super impressive for the most part. I'd love to train or spar with you guys some time!" The sentiment was genuine, evidenced by Kupo's beaming smile. He had quite the way with words and tugging on people's heartstrings when he wanted to. Like a beacon, radiating light & warmth around him.

he aggressive tension building between Bone-Blades and Farrin was thick enough to cut with a knife. Farrin didn’t want to hurt the lad, but even still he was trying to pick himself up to keep the fight going. That was until Jason’s distress became audibly clear. Blades’ senses seemed to return, then the scowl he wore retreating into something more concerned, and his arms went slack at his sides.

Finally, Farrin picked himself up and dusted himself off, slapping the cuts and slashes on his arms, hoping the brief sting might push out the continued searing pain. When it was clear the instinctual reaction wasn’t enough, he crossed his arms and put pressure on the wounds he could reach. “Next time maybe try takin’ a different approach,” Farrin commented, his gaze shifting from Blades, who was picking himself up as well, to Jason who was running back with his backpack.

“Thanks, lad, I got-“

Before he could finish, Jason went to work wrapping his arms. Farrin wouldn’t protest. The little fella clearly knew what he was doing. Farrin knew some first aid basics, learned in both Hero Prep & again here at UAU, but for years he had Sada to handle the worst of his damage. Support he could no longer rely on.

“Thanks, lad,” Farrin offered, as Jason turned to the other.

“Yeah, again, try soemthin’ a little different next time, Blades.” Farrin’s words didn’t carry Jason’s care, but neither were they pointed. “N’ yeah, maybe try ta’ maintain that sparrin’ etiquette Leonid imparted on us.”

“The name’s Hiroshi, Hiroshi Suzuki,” Bone-Blades spoke up, “and I apologize. Increased aggression is part of my quirk. It’s something I’m trying to get under control.”

Well, that explained it. Didn’t excuse the lad’s action entirely, but at least there was some reasoning behind it.

“I imagine that difficult ta’ deal wit’. I’m glad yer tryin’, though.”

It seemed, for now at least, peace between the students had been restored. No need to worry that one of them would end up in the hospital or worse. At least there was an understanding between them all now. Hopefully, that aggression something Hiroshi would get under control soon.

Kupo's eyes went wide as the other student, who he now learned was named Hiroshi, explained the source of his aggression/reckless behaviour. From deep within Kupo, a well of sympathy sprung forth. He knew all too well the harm that could come from deriding people for behaviour their Quirks caused, having experienced some of this himself. Even moreso if the behaviour was aggressive. "Oh... I'm so sorry! I really shouldn't have been as harsh, I know how overwhelming it can feel sometimes, so I should be more mindful of that stuff. He wouldn't elaborate on his own moments of losing control, nor his less desirable behaviours/tics he worked hard to learn to control, but the sentiment was there.

Seeing that the situation seemed to be resolved, Kupo remembered something with a squeak. "I forgot to introduce myself! I'm Jason Riviera, but call me Kupo if it's easier. Nice to meet both of you properly, Hiroshi-kun & Fujisaki-kun!" He was back to his normal cheery demeanour, tail swaying gently behind him as Kupo looked at the small display of his wrist device, then at his phone to confirm. "Wait, it's quarter to 4 already? Guess I was training for longer than I thought! I'm gonna go get some food, any of you guys wanna come? It's a great way to unwind~" He looked at the trio, putting the first aid kit back in his bag and zipping it up after dealing with Hiroshi's few cuts and scrapes.
"We were actually gonna meet up with some other friends after our match, but I'll see you in class, Kupo-chan!" With that, the two went to leave, and Kupo waved them off. He then turned to Farrin, smiling.
"Offer's still open to you! I'd love to get to know you better, Farrin."

arrin let Jason, or Kupo now if he preferred, take charge of the situation. Farrin could talk his way through a bout or critique a match all day, but otherwise, he didn't really do "cheery." In truth, the time-turner avoided most people until they proved interesting or otherwise good-natured. Growing up homeless for half your life sort of had that effect on people. Luckily, Jason very much fit into the latter box. The former, too, actually. He seemed a good sort and knew how to break down a proper scrap. 

"Yeah, sure, some grub sounds brilliant," Farrin replied after Hiroshi & Fujisaki left.

Chronokinesis was always eating away at Farrin's gut, making him constantly hungry. The mutation facet to his quirk was always speeding him up a dash, including things like signals firing off in his brain, which took more out of people than they might realize. Take that, then subtract his earlier training, and Farrin was famished. Plus, with the threat of the sparring situation removed, he and Jason could go back to talking over combat tactics and such. That was basically was getting to know Farrin looked like. 

"C'mon, let's head ta' the cafeteria." And with that, Farrin would lead the duo away from the sparring field and to the closest path back to the university's main building, where the cafeteria awaited their inevitable assault on its many awaiting meals.
