Sincerity is the best way to sum up Sumi. She lives her life with everything laid out on the table from the get-go, not concerned about the opinions of others on what she does, yet having plenty of views of her own that she's not afraid to share. When she speaks, she does so honestly and earnestly, having been encouraged to do so by her parents from a young age. As a result, she doesn't hesitate to express dissatisfaction even when others might feel that social norms dictate they keep their feelings to themselves. Having said that, she often tries to do this in a way that isn't malicious, which is the truth about 99% of the time.
Having grown up as the heiress of an international conglomerate, she fell into a unique position, towing the lines between what she wants out of life and what her parents want for her. In a twist of fate, their desires align more than one would expect, as she wishes to take over the business one day. This drive for her is the pursuit of science itself, as green biotech research is an interest independent of her family's company, even though biotechnology is the basis of their wealth.
One of the most important things her parents instilled in her was respect for her elders. As a young girl, she would attend company events with her parents, who had no issue with her being her authentic, frustratingly blunt self but took issue if she didn't show respect to those older than her. As a result, she would always try to show the utmost care to those around her, especially if they were older than her.
When Sumi trusts a person, she puts her faith in them without hesitation, sometimes to her detriment. She will put herself in dangerous situations, believing firmly that her friends will cover for her if things go south. Teamwork is almost a necessity to survive in this world, and she makes it very clear that even with the silver spoon she was given, it doesn't make her more special than anyone else.

A life without worry.
Sumi was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Her family ran one of the largest international conglomerates for Biotechnology research called Tiamat. It had been several generations since it was created, originally a small business operating out of Kyushu near the coast. Founded in 2015 by Sumi’s great-grandmother, its original focus was the manufacturing of drugs for rare conditions. Still, over the years, the company expanded rapidly with the onset of quirks, pushing them even further to grow into the empire they are today. Her upbringing in the family behind one of the most successful companies for all of Tiamat's biotechnology research resulted in her having more freedom than expected, especially given that she showed an interest in the sciences at a very young age. It was a match made for everyone involved.

Sumi’s life was filled with typical rich girl things. She spent more of her childhood to adolescence studying to take over the business and had an incredible knack for the scientific side. She got to experience the luxuries of world travel, and when she turned 18, she even had her black card since she was an adult. Her desire to attend UAU was something she wanted to do before she would need to step up and take over for her parents once they retired. Besides, Hero Licenses never expired, and if she ever got tired of that life, she could be a full-time hero instead!

Her body has an extra lung that funnels any cigarette smoke, magnifies it, and then she can expel it through her mouth or nose. The ratio of required smoke intake before using her quirk is 1:9, as in she can create nine times the amount of smoke that she takes in at once.
Once the smoke leaves her mouth, she can manipulate it in any way she sees fit through hand movements. She can alter the acridity of the smoke itself from pure white, which is virtually harmless to inhale, to pitch black, which causes coughing fits, is dangerous to inhale, and causes a debuff of -1 to Vitality per 3 ranks of the Quirk (capping at -5 maximum to the debuff)
She also can change the density of the smoke produced at will. This allows her to surround her targets with his intangible smoke and solidify it to grasp them or even stand on the smoke as if it were solid ground.
She is also immune to the effects of inhaling smoke, whether it be her own or otherwise.

High winds are a problem for Sumi as smoke can easily be blown away when subject to wind.
Also, she cannot create smoke when submerged in liquid because smoke is gas.

Like most support students, part of Sumi's curriculum was to hold open hours to provide support to any student who needed it. While she had the skill, her particular discipline didn't usually have as many people coming to her for help as the others like Masao, Kei, and Ana. However, she occasionally got some work. She didn't mind either way, as she was just happy to help anyone who needed it. [break][break]
After a successful session where she drew up some blueprints for an energy supplement. A quick text to Freja to meet her in the cafeteria for dinner and she was off... Until she realized she had forgotten her bag! Making her way back into the lab her eyes caught Etsuko who seemed frustrated and Sumi, as someone who always wanted to help, approached and took a look at the screen "Are you okay? "No, I'm fine, Freja." Whatever medicine they gave her in the hospital made her feel as good as new; she would have to ask about the care she received when she was back home. She was so ready to put this whole thing behind her and keep moving forward, especially if she could hold Freja's hand. They'd go together. [break][break]
She would give Freja some time to make the graves and listen silently as she poured her heart out and then would take a step forward and crouch down in front of the graves, pressing her hands together in prayer "I wish I could have met you two and I'm sorry for your loss. But I need to thank you both for protecting Freja for me." The subtle beeping of machinery caused Sumi confusion at first as she slowly opened her eyes, the fluorescent lights filling her vision as she tried to remembe- She would shoot up, immediately dizzy as she looked around panicked for a moment until her eyes settled on Freja and she breathed a sigh of relief. Being hooked up to an IV and EKG, she couldn't really get up even if she wanted to, but she could speak clearly now. "Hey you. I'm glad you're okay." She blushed slightly once the realization set in that
she had shared a moment. "Sure I'll go anywhere with you." Once they unhooked her and give her the all clear she would rise to her feet and follow Freja wherever she wanted to go.[break][break]

"I'll be okay." truthfully she had never been in more pain in her life but right now her priority was making Freja feel safe. Whatever was going through her mind tugged at Sumi's heart in such a painful way that she felt numb. For the first time in a long time she hated someone - David. Everything he represented and everything he had done had caused Freja this much pain.[break][break]
She was in stunned silence as Freja admitted her feelings. She truly didn't know what to say until...well until it clicked. She felt the same, and she hadn't realized it until now. All the times she was cut off, this is what Freja wanted to tell her. With how far she went for Freja today it made her realize she liked her too. She wouldn't have gone any farther for anyone else. Hitting the alarm she had on her person to request help she knew that Tiamat would send people to bring them to the hospital and treat their wounds. Her whole body would slump a bit, and she used what was nearly the last of her energy to reach forward and plant a kiss on her cheek. "I think I feel the same but..." she'd slump laying her head on Freja's shoulder "I called for help so I'm just gonna close my eyes for a bit but this time I promise I'll wake back up on my own. For you."

She may have thought she had no more tears left to cry but hearing Freja's crisis made her well up. She wished nothing more at that moment than she had been stronger. Strong enough to protect Freja instead of almost getting herself killed in the process.[break][break]

Sumi's attention had been split in multiple directions. Not only was there the initial group she had seen first, but several of her fellow support students had arrived in the interim. She would pat Freja on the shoulder and unlike the first time she held an event like this she would depart from the group to greet her other friends. This wasn't like last time she had plenty of people to greet instead of just meet (for the first time). [break][break]
She would come back after most of the trouble between the emo girl and the little snowperson had been resolved, with a tray of drinks for everyone! She would attempt to flag down Kei before he moved away from the group instead coming back to stand by Freja's side. "I know a lot of you already, but for those, I don't, hi! I'm Sumi Okita, a 2nd year in the support course. Welcome to my party!" For anyone she immediately recognized and could place, she would offer a drink, and for those she couldn't, she added "Just need to make sure you guys are old enough to drink if you are lets have a good time! There's plenty of food by the bar, and upstairs, you can do some karaoke!" then she noticed the board and Masao standing near it. "Oh, Masao! Everything became a blur as she was laid into by David she couldn't do anything but hold on tighter, even when her hand left her she still held on with all her might. Through the blood and tears, she had to do this. Freja needed to survive no matter what, and even if Sumi was powerless she couldn't think of anyone better to lay down her life for. She had never met anyone she would do that for but in a life and death situation it became clear.[break][break]
She would continue her vice grip until she realized she wasn't being hit anymore. Had she done it? What happened? With her eye bruised and face swollen, she couldn't really make sense of what was going on, only responding to the tug of Freja, who's hand she recognized. Doing the best she could she would run along with her following her out of the building and far far away. Her vision was blurry and she felt sick, but she would keep on moving. By the time they got to the canals, she had no more tears to cry. Instead, she sat next to Freja near the water and wrapped her arms around her. Her entire body hurt, and she felt like she was on the verge of collapsing, and yet she pushed through. Something new had bloomed, and while she didn't know it just yet, she had fallen for her. "I'm okay; I'm just a little bruised. Are you okay?" She was more than a little bruised but she'd push that down for now. Not like Freja couldn't see it but she felt as though her own wounds were nothing compared to how Freja must have been feeling on the inside.[break][break]
She would do anything for her that was made clear by all this.

I'm so excited! What made you choose this costume? Her mind was racing; what had she gotten herself into? Why didn't she call for help? If she hadn't been so foolish to go ahead to save her friend she wouldn't be screaming for help right now. Sumi would take a few steps up the stairs and winced as she mistimed a step and nearly fell over. She was no doctor, but she could tell that she fractured a rib. [break][break]
She had hoped she had gotten farther away from the rest of the gang and yet the sound of footsteps got closer and closer. In a split second decision she would stop to light up a cigarette, if Freja was in trouble she would need to stop the others from closing in. As they rounded the stairs and finally got eyes on her she would exhale creating a smoke wall dense enough to block their advance. Unfortunately for her the lizard quirker managed to scale the wall and climb up after her. She was only a few steps away and when the second tail swipe sent her flying into the door, she acted on instinct and created another smoke barrier to prevent any more interference. "F-Freja, I'm here!" she called out, pulling herself to her feet; she was bruised and bleeding slightly out of her lip, but she wouldn't back down. They needed to get out of there alive.[break][break]

She was getting nervous. Normally in a situation like this there was always a teacher, Pro Hero, or even some sort of security detail that could bail her out. She didn't have her usual backup, and she was way over her head since she was a support student. If she ran to get help, who knows what they'd do to Freja? She wracked her brain as she walked trying to think of any plan to get out of it until...wait, they didn't know what her quirk was! She could use that! [break][break]
I'll cooperate, but I need a smoke." The lizard quirker would inspect her as she reached in her purse for her lighter and cigarettes. "No funny business or else." she would add as Sumi lit up a cigarette and continued to walk with them taking a drag but only expelling the normal amount of smoke one would expect. The rest was being stored away just in case she needed it.[break][break]
As she approached the headquarters she felt even more uneasy clearly outnumbered by a wide margin and with no Freja in sight she wondered if she had been foolish to go with them without proof. That was until she heard the scream and familiar voice of Freja who was clearly panicked. "I'm on my wa-" She had only taken a few steps forward before she was swiped by the tail and sent flying into a wall. With a loud crack she could feel one of her ribs had fractured and the resulting pain knocked the wind out of her. Before she could rise to her feet she was surrounded "Get out of my way, my best friends needs me!" She inhaled deeply, wincing from the pain and then exhale the rest of her smoke reserves sending out a way of acrid, jet black smoke which caused everyone in the room to cough. Forcing herself to her feet she would head towards the sound of Freja's voice, pushing a door open to a stairway and hobbling up as fast as she could "Freja! Freja where are you??"
