It's worse. It's worse. It's actually gotten worse. How could this have happened? It wasn't like he was training his Quirk as the hero students did. His didn't need to get stronger- he was even so bold as to say it was too strong already. He could duplicate any liquid and fine grain he could touch for crying out loud! But now? As every seasoning on the spice rack continued to pour down the counter unto the floor without him even being near any of them, he came to a sickening realization. Touching what he wanted to duplicate was no longer necessary. His hands could be laying flat on a table and he could sense everything he could use his Quirk on some distance away from him. This was a fucking nightmare. Kei was outside the dorms in an instant, opting to escape the stuffy building and the many bodies within in order to get some fresh air. Except it wasn't working because nothing ever does for him to no one's surprise. But he was walking regardless because at least there was nothing he could easily put his hands on other than the ground beneath him. He can stand for a while. This was fine. His feet eventually took him to the physical education grounds, because the higher powers that he didn't believe in was against him and wanted to remind him of training once again. The only silver lining was that no one was around at this hour other than the dragon lazing in the sand. Wait a minute. Focusing more on the mound, he realized he actually recognized who it was and set aside the initial panic of oh God there's a dragon on campus. So instead of giving the creature a wide berth like any normal person would, he walked towards her instead. After also putting aside the hesitation of not wanting to bother her with something like this. She did say he could go to her if he needed someone to talk to. [p]Kei is a short guy with a stocky build and bright yellow eyes, the only real oddity with his appearance being the cross-shaped pupils that’s a minor clue to what his quirk involves. His hair is unruly, bangs held back by the headband he wears so they don’t block his eyes. A toothpick can always be found held in his teeth when he’s not eating or sleeping, having made a habit of chewing them to prevent himself from biting his lip. Faint scars can be seen on his bottom lip from when the nervous tick used to be a bigger issue.[/p]
[p]Clothes-wise, he dresses more for comfort than style. Outside the uniform he has several hoodies he wears out, and jumpsuits when he holes himself up in the workshop for hours on end. [p]In a world as dangerous as it was, wanting to help in some way just seemed like a natural reaction to him. His older brother was the same, and in fact held values befitting of a hero: kindness, bravery, perseverance. He had a cool quirk that could propel him to the top and be an inspiration to all. Kei wished to be as amazing as he was.[/p]
[p]He doubled down on his studies in middle and high school. Despite his weak quirk and small stature and tinkering nature, despite all the people who didn't believe him, what mattered most was having the knowledge and intuition that would get him in the hero department in university. At the end of the day, it was the instructors who had the final say on whether he was good enough.[/p]
[p]Kei's priorities changed when his class was attacked during a field trip.[/p]
[p]They were trapped; surrounded by monsters crafted by the villain holding them hostage. One closed in on them and Kei, in fear and desperation, placed his hands on the enemy and pushed his quirk as hard as he could.[/p]
[p]After the event, he realized he didn't want to become a hero after all.[/p]
[p]But he still wanted to help somehow.[/p]

Contrary to overwhelmingly popular belief, Kei wasn't a complete pushover. It may seem like he was with how often he accepted people's requests for gear or helped with their homework or loaned them some yen or-- okay so maybe the belief was valid. Sometimes though- sometimes he would redirect people to a different support student. If he felt that student was better suited for what they were asking for than he was. Like Ana's unmatched understanding of robotics, or Bongo's skill in chemistry. Of course these were viable reasons to refuse a project, because saying he can't because he doesn't want to wasn't in his eyes. Okay, so he really was a pushover. Fortunately Zenkai was a friend, so he actually wanted to take on their request. That project came to fruition in the form of a matching set of hefty gauntlets and boots. The guy had shown his strength back in the Ikea debacle so Kei was confident he could handle the weight of the accessories. They're at the final testing phase now, the cityscape being their experimental grounds and standing across from them are a line of robots of varying heights and weights. Kei answered the titan's questions with a smile. "Yeah, pretty much!" He pointed his pen at each of the automatons left to right. "Each of these drones have a different breakin' point, with that one at the end-" His pen rested on a giant of a mech that doubled the freshman's height. "-bein' the most durable. These are only stress tests so you don't have to worry about them movin' or anythin'." He was glad he was able to convince them not to punch actual people. Kei would say he never celebrated Hinamatsuri, but that would be a lie. He had no sisters to speak of so it was up to himself and his brother to keep their mother company to partake in the holiday before he enrolled in UAU. They often helped set up the hina doll display in her salon, so patrons can add to it with their own paper dolls as they visit. It was a good compromise when his mom didn't have a daughter to celebrate Girls' Day with. So maybe Kei was a little over-prepared as he made his way to the orphanage Jun invited him to, hefting a bag filled with origami paper, regular paper, scissors, glue, cloth, and anything else needed to make the dolls. No, he didn't know whether they had to help the children make them or if the duo was making them themselves, or even if the supplies would just be available at the location, so he may have brought everything needed for every type of doll at every stage of complexity. Okay, so Kei thought he was holding himself quite well. He thought he was answering all of the woman's questions to her satisfaction: succinctly and with enough explanation in the pros and cons of the decisions made in the project. Evidently he was wrong because Kioko was glaring at him like an ant that needed to be squashed. Unbeknownst to him were the ulterior motives at play. His eyes were directed to the ex-heiress' face, missing the tracker added to the device in its entirety. It took everything in him to not break out in a sweat. The reaction was used to lean back instead, to create distance between them without taking a step. "Uh," he gasped before his next words came out in a rush. "Its energy range is about the same as a fridge or a computer, reachin' the higher end when more materials are used simultaneously when printin'." It wasn't often that Kei's services were requested because Ana refused a project and recommended that he take it on instead. That was a lie. It was. Not that Kei minded. They did this for each other all the time, where Ana did that while Kei redirected students' requests to her when they required her expertise. He can be realistic. He didn't understand every scientific concept out there. He won't jeopardize a project because he was too proud to realize he wasn't the right person for the job. So he was glad Ana thought he was for this one, even if he wasn't the hero student's first choice. Kei was on a step ladder when the girl arrived, with tools he finished using in his arms as he organized them back on the shelf where they belonged. He turned at the call of her voice and smiled. "Hey! Yeah, you've come to the right place!" Shelving the rest of this things, he stepped down and greeted her, hand offered for a handshake. "Name's Kei Hada! Ana mentioned me. As he was pulled towards one of the goons, Kei couldn't help but wonder if taking some self-defense lessons would've done him some good here. He can't keep depending on other people to bail him out. It happened in the Ikea where he relied on Zenkai to punch some monsters while he drove out on a forklift, and now he needed Farrin to free him from the chains. Man. Imagine going through hero training just so you're not vulnerable in situations like this. Chain guy was kicked in by the freshman, and while the links were still attached to his foot, Kei was at least not dragged around anymore. With no way to cut the chains off, he pulled them instead and held them in his arms as best as he could. "Thanks!" The gratitude was short-lived however as a shot rang in the air, and panic set in as he realized who it hit. Eyes were trained on Farrin as he looked for signs of injury but instead he was- excited? Why? Getting shot was not supposed to be a good thing!Then he realized the guy came out unscathed, his hero outfit protecting him completely. Kei's laugh was borderline manic as he attempted to calm down from witnessing what he thought was a death. "That's awesome! Please don't do that again though." While he was glad the armour successfully blocked a bullet as he wanted it to, he'd rather not have found that out out in the open. Tests were meant to run in a controlled environment, not in a dark alley surrounded by people not aware of the risks. Wide eyes would turn as more shots sounded, stopping at the wall erected between them. Cannonball and bullet both were slowly closing the distance. Kei shuffled back at the display. "Uh- yeah, yeah I'm good. We should get closer to Apogee's patrol route- yes I'm still here." Because right, he was still on a call. All things considered, Kei was holding himself quite well. Here he was, answering all of Kioko's questions despite all the pressure he should be under from conversing with the previous head of the very industry whose event he was volunteering for. Maybe it was his excitement over the project's ingenious design. Maybe it was due to how prepared he was from his research on it. Maybe it was because of the warmups he had going through the same questions from previous visitors. Whatever the case may be he should reward himself or something once he was done for the day. The support student shrugged, waving his hands around a bit. "Teeechnically no, the HIVE's capable of workin' with whatever you give it as it breaks it down to be used in its processes. It won't malfunction or refuse the item. It will however count the whole branch as one material type, so when printin' somethin' with it, you'll see discolouration in the final product from the dirt and leaves because it doesn't try to separate it from the actual wood of the branch. The more Zahra spoke, the more distressed Kei became. Not out of being targeted for another round of accusations this time. This time, his confusion grew from how the girl basically repeated everything he said as if they were brand new ideas. Ideas that he didn't speak of literally seconds ago with thresholds and pain detection. He applauded her for her enthusiasm but there was strain in his eyes as he looked between her sketch and his own. Both were belts. They drew belts twice. Slowly he turned his journal to himself and his hand moved again as he made adjustments to his drawing. He eventually turned it back to her, to show it being closer to the girl's design. He understood the importance of aesthetics after all so he wanted to fit its appearance to what Zahra wanted. "Yeah that's possible," Kei responded with a squeak. Kei may be a pessimist in many aspects of life, but the advance of science was not one of them. People will always be innovative no matter the state the world was in. It was seen in eradicated viruses. it was seen in the dawn of Quirks. It was seen now, in a little device capable of printing entire projects in minutes. While the printer currently had a high price, it wouldn't be long before someone came in to make its manufacturing so cheap that the cost of the item itself would be lowered as well. Or the price stayed the same and the creators kept the ever-growing profits. Okay, so maybe there's a bit of cynicism sneaking in but he wants to remain hopeful! At the woman's question, Kei's smile brightened. "Yeah!" He coughed again to reel in his excitement. "I mean- yes, it can." Placing the freshly printed prosthetic down, he then brought in another previously made item: a block with a screen display. On it was the number 263 in red against a black background. "I printed this to count how many people visited this booth so far. LED screen, plastic casin', rubber button." He clicked said button to increase the number to 264. Kioko did count as a visitor. Kei turned the device to reveal the back was made of clear glass, to fully display the circuit board running it. "This whole thing was printed together. His eyes slowly grew wide as he comprehended the workings behind Farrin's Quirk. To tell her the way he used it was innovative would be an understatement. "Crazy." What else was there to say really? The guy could speed up and slow down air. A thing that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Well technically it's wind which made more sense but still. "But right, black, since the light wouldn't be travelling to anyone's eyes if it stayed still. That idea's not related to the super-heated energy you wanted to avoid doin' is it?"Kei cracked a smile as she was getting his thought process. "Exactly! I get the wires though, still needed so it'll be easier for you to direct the energy. There's just no further additions to that part so no one else can make use of it. I also like the idea of usin' it to repeat forces and storage. Everyone expects one strong hit with a punch but not two. Work smarter, not harder."He hummed at her suggestion. "Huh. I never thought to use the arms as four hoses." The support student moved to take his device again and squinted at it. "It's gonna be awkward connectin' my hands to the pack. I'd probably need to run a plastic tube filled with water down my arms and attach the ends to the palms of my hands." He squatted a bit so he was eye-level with his gear. "Sorr-" Kei cut himself off before he finished, remembering that Zahra didn't want him to apologize. "Right. Okay." A shaky laugh escaped him. Being pushed around was nothing new to the sophomore, what with his demeanour and all. It's just an unfortunate truth he's come to accept. "Anyways, that makes sense. You need somethin' that you don't need to trigger yourself..." He shifted his toothpick in thought, brows furrowed as he wondered how to automate such a weapon. Then he gasped. "Your stomach aches." Kei was quick to pick up his journal, flipping to a new page before he began to write in it. "So this device- it could activate when you're experiencin' the reaction you get from your Quirk. Once it goes over a threshold that is, so it'll only trigger when someone's lyin' a lot to take advantage of you. It'll avoid the accidental ones."And since the lies can come from anywhere, the weapon has to be somethin' that doesn't need to be aimed." He turned the journal so Zahra could see his sketch, which amounted to a belt with sound waves coming off it. "An alarm is indiscriminate, and if it's loud enough it'll get people to stop talkin'.
