Nine out of ten times, emotion won out. Humans were still animals, and animals didn't operate on logic, not as often as they liked to think, at least. Farrin couldn't blame Kenta for what he was feeling. If anything, Farrin was the weird one, operating with mechanical efficiency even in the face of death. People weren't supposed to function like that, but he had. In becoming what he was now, he traded away pieces of himself. Pieces that would have stilled a younger Farrin's hands and feet before the self-sacrifice and ultimate death of another.
Farrin didn't respond at first. Kenta knew his time-turning friend was a street rat who mostly grew up homeless. He also knew Farrin's dad was a murderous villain, one his mother died apprehending. There was plenty of crazy poured into the Farrin pot, and maybe it had been what desensitized him, but it wasn't something to aspire to. Eventually, he would speak up.
"Yuh' held his attention n' came out the other side, lad. That plays so much a' part in a life n' death scrap. Yer right, I was knocked out cold fer' a few, n' Zen took some licks as well, n' neither o' us nor the feckin' dragon woulda had the time we needed if someone wasn't occupyin' that stormy fucks attention," he started, pausing for a minute in thought before continuing, "It took the efforts o' heroes n' the like ta' take down those other Elementals or whatever they're bein' called. We only had each other, that dragon, which who knows how much experience they had, n' the girl. We've been trainin', sure, but that fecker wasn't armed wit' some run o' the mill quirk. They were strong. Ridiculously strong."
In all his run-ins with villainy so far, Farrin hadn't encountered any that hit as hard as the storm fecker or had attacks that moved that fast. Ouroboros utilized many pawns and sought to overwhelm Farrin with visions of his fears and his possibilities, but nothing on that level. Not yet, at least. But, in any case, it was shit luck for Kenta to run into something so ferociously powerful on his first real patrol out there. This wasn't something he would just shake off, that was for sure.

Normally, this might be taken as defensive posturing, but for him, it was just dialing into the conversation. Jun's premise made enough sense, but her response to the given scenario was lost on the time-turner. Would it not benefit her more to shore up her weaknesses rather than hope for the best? One way or another, the enemy would eventually close the distance, and it probably would be someone with a power-type quirk that shined up close.
Farrin was Jun's opposite in this. They each had their flavor of firepower, but Farrin traded range for speed when regarding their quirks. That meant he needed answers to similar ranged opposition. Hence, the linear cannons and his practicing his marksmanship each day. They needed to practice for all scenarios, no matter how uncomfortable, while they could, behind the safety of UAU's walls. Still, there was usually a method to each person's unique flavor of madness. Jun hadn't made as far as she had without some self-awareness, even if they did disagree on a few things.
"All the more reason, I'd think, ta' have the best available techniques at yer' disposal fer' when there's no other option but ta' fight up close," he said, letting the words hang for a moment before continuing, "still, all that aside I actually have a question regardin' yer quirk. Is there any limit on what yuh' create wit' those constructs or is it just whatever yuh' imagine?"
If she could create some spiked gloves or something of the sort, she could compensate for her frame when it came to battling power-type quirks. But there was no way a second-year student wouldn't have thought of this. So, the odds were she had some sort of limitations that stopped her from doing so.
"Phone call? From one o' the people yuh' saw?" He continued, keeping the focus on her visions rather than considering his own.

Yeah, they were a few minutes behind. Farrin was nothing if not punctual. The value of time was known better by him than most. With chronokinesis, how could it not be? Still, calm wrapped him in the comfort of its arms. This wasn't a training session or a patrol. They were just heading out to see ol' Tomio. A kind elderly fella, neither Farrin nor Freja hard the heart to abandon to the coldness of solitude. Also, Farrin was still betting he was secretly part of a Yakuza gang or something. Not a real bet. Just for fun. But he would keep the joke going.
"We'll make it," Farrin chirped confidently.
Technically, what he was about to do was illegal, but if she wouldn't say anything, he wouldn't either. Red pearls burned gold in his eyes, and a thin emerald film enveloped both students. Increasing their speed. They were going to make it. Until Murphy enforced a law of his own, anything that could go wrong would. Someone was calling to them from down an alleyway. Like, by name.
The temporal field quieted with Farrin's quirk. They didn't know the nature of the emergency, so he would bow before the rules. No quirk until proven necessary. Freja started down the alley first. Farrin's leg muscles were as torn putty when chronokinesis was inactive. Still, he followed at best speed, trailing from just a few feet behind her.
Farrin's eyes rose. Paranoia gripped his mind. Whenever these Ouroboros people attacked, the head honchos usually watched from above. No observers this time, though. At least, none that he could see.

Josephine wasn't brazen with confidence, but she was hardly the wallflower. Maybe some of that poise would rub off on Kenta. And in turn, Kenta could show Josephine the ropes with his quirk. What Kenta lacked in confidence, he made up for in precision. The might pieces might fit together perfectly, completing their respective puzzles. If not, each would still have met someone reliable. A win - win scenario if he had ever seen one.
A small boulder blocked the thinning dirt pathway. Maybe the storm that rolled through a few days ago had struck the mountainside and shifted the terrain? Either way, they were going up and over again. The only other option was to scale the far more steep stone wall to their side. No thanks.
" 'ere we go again," he muttered, throwing one hand onto the boulder and probing it for some purchase.
A small, flat surface was enough for his fingers to latch onto. Farrin yanked himself up and went searching again. One step at a time he scaled up the boulder until reaching the top. On the other side, something of a small reward. The path turned into a small clearing with more space. Less mountain ridge and more small woods. Water trickled down the bank of a small stream and rolled into the tiny current. Serenity in a snapshot.
"Aye, come check this out," he shouted down to Josephine. It wasn't their destination. No, Farrin was shooting for the top of the summit, but it was a nice little scene. Maybe it was just his inner Irishman, but Farrin had a soft spot for the earth. For quiet and nature, even if he was a city boy at heart.

A mixed bag is what Farrin was working with. Pros and cons as far as the eye could see. Pros: Kenta was here. Farrin and Kenta went back to their days in Hero Prep. Big mark on the pros list. Another pro. Farrin had an item called Crown of the Fae. How he might use it was a mystery, but it certainly belonged on the pros list. Cons: Nova Luna. A wild card at best. A nuisance likely to tear the team apart at worst. Another con. No quirks. Without his Chronokinetic adrenaline shot, Farrin's legs were putty, constantly exhausted by his time-turned efforts. Ironically, he was likely to be the slow one this time around. Then there was both Jun and another student he hadn't recognized. Jun was capable but moody. Her Mood Ring alias was on the mark. She could land on either list. Same deal with the unknown student. It could go either way.
"Alright, that's disturbin'," he said, eyeing the monkeys and the hole in the simulation room.
The energy shot was par for the course, but why did it have to be toys and lifeless, beady eyes? Soulless, daring to steal those of the students. It wasn't natural. And it was downright creepy.
The opening shots were fired, the rules explained, and Mood Ring jumped into action. Farrin didn't need to await instructions. He slugged three aisles over at slow-mo Joe speeds. This was embarrassing. "C'mon then, e'eryone get a move on, but keep some distance between each other! If those shots get any larger, we dun' want 'em takin' several o' us out at once," He shouted, his body feeling as though it were ten times its weight. Why was there no quirk usage allowed...
His fingers danced through the digital menu and landed on the grenades. "Stay away from 'em, I've tear gas. Might blind 'em," he called out, arming himself with two grenades and tossing them toward the center aisle where the largest number of toys gathered. He still had his strength and one hell of a throwing arm, so there would be plenty of distance between them and the grenades - which would hopefully offer safety enough. If the toys were blinded, they might move a little more freely. If not, at least Farrin knew the tactic wouldn't work later.

Farrin was something of a B-grade student. Not entirely numb-skulled, but he fell short of the true genius. In his heroics classes, though, Farrin was a trailblazer. He aced each exam like few ever had. Heroics was a calling he felt in his heart, in his bones, and apparently, on occasion, across time.
"Any luck on that front?" Farrin asked as they continued on the trail.
A dirt pathway gave way to stone and overturned logs. The slope grew more treacherous with every passing step. Stones, both large and small, littered the route, forcing the duo to make a climb over. Eventually, the path became strictly uphill.
"One way er' another, yuh'll get there. No such thing as a quirk incapable o growth. Stick to it n' I know yuh'll see yer abilities improve," he added.
The climb was a nice distraction from the rest of the world. No attacks so far. His life might have been down in that hole, but today wasn't so bad. Day by day, he would make the climb. One climb within. One climb without. Funny how that worked.
"If yer hairs can grow er' somethin', maybe yuh' should talk ta' Kenta Muruyama, 'nother student in our grade, his quirk is a weird gel he can secrete n' make use o' in a scrap. I know it's no the same as yer' quirk, but might share some overlap er' somethin?" He posed the question.
Kenta was one of his longtime friends. They met during Hero Prep. He had self-confidence issues, but the lad had a heart of gold. Pairing them up seemed like a recipe for success. Kenta would have another friendly pair of eyes on him, and Josephine could probably pick up a thing or two in the ways of her quirk.

A crooked brow was his initial response. The name was familiar but remained obscure beyond memory's touch. A quick search would do the trick, but that would have to wait. Another sweep of the beach was in order, and a report to the UAU attendants present.
"Answer is simple enough," Farrin started, "these creatures were hurtin' people. E'en battered n' divorced from their limbs; they continued ta' attack without hesitation or remorse. Things are only so black n' white ta' those unversed in gray. Can the threat be stopped in such a way d'at it won't cause further harm? If yes, detain 'em. If no', needs ta' be knocked unconscious or, if absolutely necessary - killed."
Did that make him a killer? By the textbook definition, sure. But textbooks weren't tossed around the battlefield. Fists, firearms, and all other assortments of weaponry were. Saving everyone was impossible, even for him. He couldn't save each and every crook and creature so determined to cause harm along the way. So, was he a killer? Maybe, but only in the defense of others and as a last resort. He was no murderer. And there's where his line laid. All life was precious, but a life committed to atrocity knew the risks it ran.

He hadn't wanted to put the man in danger, but the guy wouldn't settle for anything less than a kill shot. Sensible, if a bit brutal. But sometimes brutal was necessary. And that thought scared him. Because the time-turner couldn't tell if they were his own or that of an alter's.
The streak of light and splash of flames signified the end. Of this attack, at least. With the serpent's head cut, the body died. The smaller creatures retreated into the sea.
For a moment, the time-turner held his ground. Both his fists and the cannons were at the ready. He was confident, not conceited. Fate would not tolerate a lax guard. The moment you let the walls down, the moment you were exposed, was the moment you were stabbed in the back. Sometimes by the enemy, sometimes by those you thought were your friends.
It was only when the last of beasties was obscured by the tides that Farrin moved forward. The golden glow of his eyes remained, ready for another attack, but the tension in his shoulders began to fade. So, too, did the voices whispering in his ears and the anger in his heart. He was himself again for now.
"Yuh' alright?" He called out, approaching his still-unnamed ally.
It appeared many of the creatures lining the beach were falling back as well. For the moment, heroism and its allies were triumphant. He would have to rally with the attendants who accompanied the volunteer students soon and explain his position of "self-defense." First though, he had to make sure this guy was okay. It was probably best he vacate the scene before anyone asked questions.

Fewer weaknesses meant fewer openings, which in turn left a more formidable pattern set in the enemy's eyes. The body became feared, and the mind faltered.
"True enough, but yer better off goin' straight ta the source or findin' other forms meant fer bare-knuckled boxin' over the more widely recognized styles," he responded.

Confidence, strength, and strategy made for a killer combination. It drove Farrin into the heart of a scrap. He was most comfortable in the opposition's face, throwing them off their footing, pressing the attack. That didn't mean he wasn't training in sharpshooting with his linear cannons. Heroes had to be ready for anything. Villains weren't going to play fair, either. They would use hostages, drugs, and weaponry without restraint. It was inevitable that the students of today would eventually find themselves fighting in undesirable conditions. That's why Farrin spent his time training day in and day out. He needed to sharpen every sense and every tool in his arsenal.
"O', I'm just grabbin' some equipment from inside. Saw yuh' on the way over. Thought I might offer some pointers or insight if yuh'd like. Boxin' is big thing o' mine. Anyway, how yuh' doin?" He asked, slowly navigating towards the topic of their last outing - and everything they had seen that day.

It was mountain day. It was an odd holiday, but given its proximity to Farrin's birthday, well, why not take advantage to go for a climb up the famous mountain? In another life, one he only caught snippets of through sifting dreams, he scaled a similar mountain with chains wrapped around his arms and legs. If he could make such an epic climb in another life, he certainly could now.
He wasn't about to do it alone, though. Since both students were from a foreign land, the States, to be exact, Farrin took Josephine along for yet another off-campus excursion. Hopefully, the day would remain free of any unwanted attacks. He wasn't yet aware of Josephine's true strength or her identity as the Peacekeeper and, therefore, still believed the story she was selling - that she hadn't mustered any insane control over her abilities.
"C'mon now, we've quite the climb ahead o' us," he said with a smile on his face. "N' thanks fer' venturin' out wit' me again."
Sparring and training on campus were all well and good. Farrin was a gym rat at heart and loved exercise, but it could get stale, even with UAU's wide array of tools and equipment. A hike like this, though, could work up quite a sweat, especially if he didn't use his quirk much. So, down the trail, they went.

She's lucky now that he doesn't let the shark-monster go. UAU's student body came in all shapes and sizes- a hundred different flavors of crazy. Dark and broody, upbeat go-getters, wallflowers in need of a push. Quite a spectrum of students roamed the campus, but this one was hot sauce served in the ice cream parlor, entirely out of place.
"Useless," Farrin sighed.
Frustration made for potent fuel. It flooded Farrin's veins, seared them hot, and thrust him forward toward the beasts. He hardly slept. Was attacked almost every instance he left campus, today included. He missed Sada. And the chronokinetic whispers in his ears were growing louder day by day. Bad to worse. Bad to worse. Again and again, everything went from bad to worse. Now, he had to babysit one of his peers while pummeling giant shark monsters. Would the madness only end when he did?
A balled-up fist knocked the foremost creature down into the sand. The second lunged. Then splattered. A gusher of blood seeped over cold, dead eyes punctuated by a spike dug into the creature's skull. Its claws stilled. Its maw shut. She killed it.
Farrin dared a glance back at Hikari. Okay, maybe she wasn't entirely useless.
Sand spiraled into the air. One crusty leg after another, the third shark-crustacean charged. It swung one lobster-like claw, then the other. A snail's pace in Farrin's eyes. He dipped out of range, then threw himself forward. One arm latched onto the monster's nose, and a leg pinned the bottom of its mouth down. Farrin stuck his free hand into the belly of the beast and fired three rounds from his glove-mounted cannons. Incendiaries that burst into flames and cooked the creature from the inside out. Restraint would see innocent people hurt. He had to dial it up.
It appeared the trio of creatures were the last in their immediate surroundings. Farrin backpedaled a few steps, then eyed the beach up and down. More were attacking in his periphery, but none in this immediate area. "I suggest yuh' group up wit' some o' the others. I'm gonna see where I can help," he shouted, taking off further down the beach. Hopefully, the situation would be contained before anyone was severely hurt.

Wind or air manipulation of some sort? An odd form of telekinesis? It wasn't a precise run. More like he was kicking along and sliding on his feet or something. Curiosity pulled a two on the queue, though. Number one on the line belonged all to the crustaceans surrounding the bigger fish.
Farrin kicked off as well. From the outside, it appeared he was moving faster. In a way, he was. His passage through time accelerated. He thrust his boot into one beast, then fired the cannon into another. A few small fries took their swings, but what they perceived to be a ridiculously fast time-turner, was actually an absolute mad lad seeing the world move far too slow.
Anger thrust his fist forward. A limb tore free from the beast. He had enough of it lately. His partner off in another country. Constant attacks from these Ouroboros freaks every time he stepped foot off campus. The whispers in his ears grew into a choir. It never stopped. It never slowed. Now, a calm day of some volunteer duty at the beach turned into a monstrous invasion.
"Enough," he shouted, lifting the creature off the ground and thrusting it into one of its friends.
Both collapsed in a chitin heap. His nostrils flared. So did his senses. The words reached his ear before Antoine uttered a sound. By the time he shouted for Farrin to shoot, the shots were fired. The time-turner wasn't the best shot. He aimed just a tad high, trying to avoid his unnamed ally but still catch the large beastie in the face. It was a large target, but even in his anger, Farrin wasn't willing to hurt the innocent - or his allies. Three incendiaries cut through the air, faster than the eye could see, inbound on the fish's face.

With a swift uppercut delivered to its core, the beast toppled over. "Is now really the time fer' this?" Farrin asked, backing up another few steps as the larger monster shook the daze away and reoriented itself for a proper charge.
"UAU," he called out the answer, and aiming the barrel protruding from his wrist, "n' yeah I've a few options."
No risks with the big fella. It wasn't worth with such inferior - no - with such a threat. There were lives on the line. Even if his thoughts were in conflict, they agreed on this.
White streaks cut between through the distance. As the larger monster charged, raising its massive claws, two rounds slapped into the shark's face and burst into flames. Incendiary rounds.
The shark-beast tumbled forward but immediately picked itself up and continued the charge. It dropped its claws down in a heavy hammer strike. Sand spewed outward in a ring. Below its claws, Farrin stood, his palms firm below the creature's large appendages.
"I'm gettin' tired o' this shite," he scowled from behind grit teeth.
Smoldering anger. It was an inferno in his blood, flooding his veins. Catching those giant claws required strength. Unnatural strength. Strength Farrin borrowed from the very beings whispering in his ears, trying to sway his way.
Farrin stepped aside, allowing the claws to fall and smash into the ground. He took aim, then fired. Again and again. Two incendiaries struck. Four. Twelve. The beast backpedaled this time. Flames cooking flesh and burning at the limb's carapace. It still wasn't enough, though. With its claws raised, it protected itself from the worst of the damage. He needed to hit again - harder.
"Yuh sure yuh dun' have anythin?" Farrin shouted the question.
He had a few other options, but they were experimental. Techniques he hadn't yet mastered. If the fella at his back really didn't have any other tricks, there wouldn't be many other choices.
