His stomach yearned for a good ol’ New York hot dog or the gift that was pizza. So far, only one or two spots in Japan lived up to the comfort meals of home. Meticulous training left him with a grumbling gut most days, one he would shove a protein bar into until his next meal. It was the smart move. Less grease. Just the nutrients he needed to keep him going through the day.
Today, he was on an assigned patrol route with second-year Jun Kanjo, or Mood Ring. It was all practice, with the students heavily encouraged to call in the authorities or for a pro-hero if they ran into real trouble, but Farrin was becoming used to these little runs. And if he was being entirely honest, he had become accustomed to handling trouble of local criminality himself, too. They were trusted to act without a proctor, one of the University's professors, which meant they had a little more freedom but would be under greater scrutiny if any trouble did come their way.
"Yuh' run this route before?" He asked the second year.
The two had their disagreements in the past. It appeared as though she didn't like him all that much. But that didn't really matter. She didn't have to like him. As long as they could see the assignment, the patrol through, and the people safe, that was enough. Hopefully, UAU would offer the preliminary exam soon. Then they could really act. Or, well, act without much worry of repercussion. Silly rules. Still, without much else to say, Farrin continued down the street alongside his partner for the day.

He heard Incapacitor's words, but they were lost on him. What normally would have stirred a hurricane storm was little more than a breeze against stone. These last few months had tested Farrin. Despite the protection UAU claimed, it could only extend so far beyond the walls. Farrin had gone looking for trouble. That was the truth. After he froze up before Magister, the first of these stalker villains, he vowed not to do so again. He chased danger. Confronted villainy. Stood tall over those that wrought malevolence into the world. Yet, before Balor, he felt it again. Fear.
Farrin pulled his phone from his pocket, meriting only a slight shift in the light behind the dark knight's visor. It flicked two fingers aside, and the weight of Farrin's phone grew thousands fold. It slammed into the ground and shattered. Then, the weight of the world was thrust on Farrin's shoulders. He, too, crashed.
His hands pressed against the ground, mustering all his might to push. Push against the increased gravity he was subject to, but it was no good. "Get out o' 'ere!" He shouted to Miroru, who had yet to garner Balor's attention.
"Well, that was easy enough," Alastor mused.
He just needed the Balor construct to trap the girl as well, then allow her own father's image to finish her off. Unfortunately, he could only push the fear constructs in the right direction, not control them absolutely. The targets' own fears had a hand in play as well. Still, how long could it take before these two beasts saw the girl killed and the boy subdued?

Danger rode the winds, and they hadn't even reached the electrical barrage yet. No, that was another few seconds away. Kenta's gels swatted the store sign off course a little, buying the man it threatened to topple a moment, but only a moment.
"Feckin' hell," he cursed, then at full chronokinetic speeds, burst ahead.
Farrin swept the man out and away from the potential danger, the sign slamming hard against the wall just behind where the fella stood a moment ago. "Get indoors, now!" He shouted, setting the man on his feet. A second later, he's back beside his fellow students.
"Just another day," he replied to Kenta's earlier remark, again eyeing that dark concentration of clouds. "Let's get goin'. I've a feelin' things are only gonna get worse."
A thin film of emerald time ensnared the three. As long as Zenkai and Kenta stayed close, he could move them at time-turned speeds. Weaving between aerial obstacles and overturned vehicles, Farrin led the way toward the heart of the storm. He dug his phone from his pocket and thumbed 1-1-0. Only static replied. He dialed again. Nothing. A concerned crook of the brow framed his features.
"Can't get anythin' on me' phone. Dun' think we're gettin-- MOVE!"
Pain stabbed at the back of his brain. Danger. Now. Thunder shook the ward. Another field was erected above the trio, but the first bolt laced its way between buildings and burst against the ground between them. The second and third bolts passed through the deceleration field, but "slowed" lightning still put firearms to shame. Farrin soared, riding the air pressure wave of the first blast and slamming hard into a nearby building. The field around his allies would drop, both distance and the oncoming danger proving too distracting for him to keep them up. One bolt flashed after another, lighting spearing the street again and again.
"This shite definitely not natural!" He shouted to Zenkai and Kenta wherever they had ended up. "No backup as far as I know. It's on us, lad! I'll see if I can grab its attention."
Assuming this wasn't the act of some malevolent higher entity, and indeed a quirk, like all living things, it had limited attention. So, Farrin slammed the temporal pedal down and beamed ahead. One bolt arced just overhead, and saw a car off to his side burst into flames. Another incinerated the second-floor walls of a building to his right. Farrin cut short, then darted left, then burst forward. A swift right. An erratic pattern meant to throw this potential enemy off. The winds grew fiercer, threatening to cast him away, but at time-turned speeds, he pushed through--until he came about two dozen meters out from the base of the storm's heart. The clouds were dark, too heavily concentrated to make out their malevolent master from below, but if this was an act of villainy, the villain had to be close.
"Oi! Arsehole! How 'bout we turn down the air conditionin' a tad n' talk things out? Stop makin' a mess o' e'eryone's day n' all that!"
Was this tactic likely to work? No, but that's why he erected another deceleration field overhead - in case of retaliation. He still wasn't entirely sure where the troublemaker at the heart of the hurricane was, let alone if they could hear Farrin's words. If they did, though, Farrin might grab the bastard's attention long enough for Kenta and Zenkai to position themselves for when things inevitably got worse.
-Farrin saved the civi from the flying store sign, then grouped up with Zenkai and Kenta. He sped the trio up to approach the heart of the storm and tried to call the authorities but got static. Once the lightning barrage came, a sonic boom knocked him away, and the acceleration fields over the other two students collapsed. Farrin then sped ahead to try distracting what he now assumes is a villain. He reached the base of the storm's heart and is trying to find out where the source (villain) is by taunting / talking to it while also giving his friends time to position themselves for a potential fight.

Tokyo was a mixed bag when it came to the law. Yes, in theory, it was enforced everywhere, but there were certainly some neighborhoods that went a little less enforced than others. It was the same back in New York. Some things were the same no matter what city you found yourself in. You had your upscale, nicer neighborhoods with tighter security and cleaner streets, then you had the middle grounds where most people lived, assuming the city lay in a prosperous country, and finally, you had the run-down public squalors. An unfortunate inevitability that the world could only hope to minimize. To be winners, there had to be losers. If some people gained, others lost.
Farrin shook away the morose mist clouding his attention and looked to SuperNova, one of UAU's more prominent professors within the hero course and his and Natsumi's proctor of the day. The two had proved themselves in their recent hero simulation, and so they were deemed fit to bring along on a practice patrol. Should they encounter danger, they were to let SuperNova handle the crooks while they escorted civilians to safety and called the authorities. Little did they know Farrin already had his fair share of run-ins with villainy outside of UAU's walls.
SuperNova leaped from one building, down the city block, and onto another in a single bound. The man was more like a mountain built from muscle. Farrin could cross buildings and even "skywalk" now by kicking off the air itself via temporal trickery, but to move such distances with such little effort blew his mind away still.
“Oi, yuh' alright up there, Sprite?” He asked Natsumi who was capable of true flight.
The two had been trailing their pro-hero professor for a while now, and what was little more than a skip for him was a marathon for them. Well, for Farrin, at least. He didn't know exactly how much Natsumi's flight taxed her.
"Hey, the two of you need to keep up!" SuperNova bellowed from down the street.
"Shite," Farrin sighed. Without another word, he was off.

One scene splayed out before the next came to replace it. His favorite holiday? It was a tough call. Christmas marked his favorite and most painful memories. Fire and water blended together and poured down the hatch. Sometimes it cooled. Sometimes, it seared.
"Halloween," he answered.
It wasn't exactly a lie. Where Christmas was something of a mixed bag of best and worst, Halloween rarely disappointed. On Halloween, after his parents' departure from his life, in one form or another, he wasn't just some homeless kid. Throw a sheet over his head, and he was just another runt running around trick or treating. Candy and gallivanting through the night with kids his age. When he retreated to whatever hovel or bridge he was calling home that night, it was with a bag stuffed to the brim with candy. Sugary goodness, he tried to ration out, though he failed every time.
"I know people dress up n' go partyin' 'ere fer' Halloween, but back home, kids go trick o' treatin', which usually saw our parents bringin' us ta' other people's homes who had candy n' such fer us little ones. Fun times."
From what Farrin gathered during his time in the country, there wasn't really any trick or treating here in Japan. Kids still dressed up, too, but it was more for the general costumed festivities than to actually go around asking for candy. Might as well throw the whole holiday out, says him. But then, Farrin didn't do much partying.
Eventually, the two would pass one of the many shrines embedded in the city's streets. It was one of the most unique aspects of Japan's larger cities. Even amidst the growth of modernity, tradition stood tall. There were churches back in New York, but many were found with graffiti or were otherwise run down - all but the largest at least. Here, well, Tokyo was dotted with these shrines, and they seemed well respected. Farrin paused just outside the ground's main entrance, a path through a small garden that led to the shrine proper. A small crowd had gathered within. Praying perhaps? It was mostly older folk. Though the day's meaning was mostly lost on him, Farrin smiled. Things were calm. People were going about their lives. His sifting dreams so often fed him chaos and misery. Today, there was none.
"It's nice. People havin' some quiet time away from the busyness o' e'eryday life. Wish e'eryone had more time like this. Ta' sit n' be, ta' appreciate the moment."
Mindfulness. Time to set aside for mindfulness. How much healthier would everyone worldwide be if they had a little more of that? Bet there would be less crime, too.

These nightly practice runs fit perfectly into Farrin's schedule. His mornings were for intense physical training. Afternoon for classes and personal studies, along with some quirk-specific training. His day's waning hours usually entailed another round of physical training when Sada wasn't around, but running about the city was cardio enough with the added benefit of seeing him quell lesser offenses.
Now, technically, he wasn't supposed to get involved in anything too dangerous. If it looked like serious villain activity, protocol dictated he call the authorities immediately so a pro could handle the situation. But, danger could be subjective. What was dangerous to the roach might not be so harrowing to the lion. Farrin slotted himself in with the latter category. He had handled himself in the field quite a few times now, not that UAU was aware of his run-ins with villainy. Tell them about the groups giving him trouble, and he'd be lucky ever to leave campus again. No, for now, mum was the word. Until it wasn't.
The time-turner leaped from one roof to the next across the massive metropolis. Skywalking, his ability to accelerate small temporal fields below his boots to "kick" through the air for a few steps saved him from some of the larger gaps, though he still couldn't cross the larger plazas or scale taller buildings with it. He was practicing that little maneuver with Miroru. It did, however, land him right atop a shorter residential complex skirting the neighborhoods between Tokyo's heart and the outskirt wards. It was there he heard the scuffle. Heard well before he saw it.
Peeking over the edge, he saw a few figures attacking someone in an alley across the street. "Now that no' nice," he muttered, leaping over the edge and using that same skywalk maneuver to slow his descent. When his boots hit the ground, Farrin immediately went for his cell phone. A quick signal sent out to 110 assured backup would arrive eventually, but the woman clearly needed some help now.
"Oi! Arseholes!" He called out, approaching the thugs that took up Retsu's flank. "Given yuh' one chance t'surrender now. Dun' run, I'll catch yuh'. Dun' fight, I'll win." He growing confident as of late. Extra confident. It was both a source of strength and one of his greatest weaknesses. Time to find out which way that scale leaned today.

Neither proved all that helpful. How scientists believed time worked didn't help much due to his own limitations, and the capabilities of the other few temporally touched quirks lacked enough similarities with Chronokinesis to be adapted for his own use. Farrin had to feel his way through the dark of the unknown. He would say he turned out okay - though this whole time-touched existence did come with quite a few quirks. No pun intended.
"Gotcha," he muttered in the faintest whisper, his hand still trailing the snake's scales.
Magister was up above the rooftops last time, but when Farrin and Miroru arrived, he hadn't seen anyone up above. She could pick up on things he couldn't, though. The enemy's own communication could be used against them. To pinpoint them even, perhaps.
"Are you sure? This is a bit early, no?" The figure continued. "You're right. Very well. We'll remove her from the board before she becomes a problem."
The clock had not yet struck midnight on the time-turner. He needed to grow still, but they needed him isolated. To that effect, those he surrounded himself with would be targeted in his place. Corvidae's people had failed when faced with the girl wielding the bat. Alastor, the suited villain above, would not repeat that mistake.
"I don't appreciate throwing my marks so heedlessly, but so it is," he mused.
Alastor drew his sword only partway, then thrust it back into its sheath. Below, the Ouroboros sigil would glow with a golden hue. The light would burn brighter, nearly igniting it would seem, then, quite unceremoniously, disappear.
A geyser of dark blue fog would spew out from where the symbol was marked along the wall, oozing its way through the street and down the nearby alleys. From one end of the street, a heavy thump would mark the arrival of one great threat. From the other end, there would emerge another.
Farrin's attention turned to the former of the two, his eyes wide. "No," he spoke in disbelief. "It can't be. You can't be." But apparently, it was. Chronokinesis fired up, Farrin surrounded in the emerald sparks and white motes of light that signified the intensity of time's might. What he saw was impossible, yet here he was - Balor now stood before him. ((Alastor's mist materializes the greatest fears of those caught within. Farrin's villainous papa is the former. The latter is up to you / Miroru! These fears are visible and can interact with both parties, though, albeit to lesser degrees than their "real" counterparts / they won't be as strong.)) Farrin boots slipped out from under him, his arms swinging wide to balance himself. How fortunate for the trio that the fiery goon beside ol' Ice Armor was heating up their surroundings enough to see them unaffected. Hopefully, Madam Web could swing around and stay airborne to avoid the obstacle Farrin now faced.
One fireball blew his way, then another. Even if he sensed the danger, he couldn't ground himself or fully control the direction of his movement. The flames engulfed the time-turner, searing away at more layers of his outerwear, revealing more of the black hero outfit below. His arms rose to defend his face, the flames dissipating shortly after contact.
Farrin had to play the newest card in his deck. The one developed with Miroru. If he didn't get above the ice, he would be doomed by it. All the speed in the world didn't count for squat if you weren't wearing the right footwear while coasting on ice. The maneuver wasn't perfected yet, but it was better than eating more fireballs head-on.
Farrin leaped. A shimmering field of emerald appeared below his right boot, and from it, he seemingly kicked off. A small gust flew out from under the field while Farrin was flung upward. Skywalking, Miroru called it. By accelerating the movement of his feet and the air below, he could shoot the air downward while the opposite reaction kicked him upward.
A light-axe whooped through the air, spinning its way toward him. Farrin snatched it by the handle, the spinning motion slow in his eyes, then threw it toward the snot-nosed punk trying to burn Web up just a few meters over. The axe dissipated before making contact, but it grabbed snot-nose's attention. Maybe he'd make a window for Lady Web.
"Not over yet, boyos!" Farrin shouted, kicking again and again, on a descent path.
He lunged forward and jabbed the fiery thug right across the cheek. Concrete cracked under the thug's fall. Farrin landed beside the other two thugs and spun around in a kick. Ice-armor threw his arm up, blocking the blow. "Shite," Farrin spit out, jumping back a step. Well, he took one of three out, at least.

Quite possibly, but if he walked out of the labs with his hero attire upgraded, what did it matter? He approached the table and looked the document over, confirming he wasn't unknowingly signing away his soul, then signed. Sooner or later, Ana might come to regret the obligation of maintaining Farrin's hero outfit. Continued payment would likely come in the form of his return to the labs for her experimentation, pending her confirmation of his abilities.
"Alrighty then, test away," he said, stepping away from the table and into the scanner.
Just how would Farrin's vitals read? Aside from the increasingly frequent visits to UAU's infirmary since Sada's out-of-country internships, Farrin hadn't had a proper checkup in a while. And post-spar readings really weren't reliable. Heart rate flying up. An unknown quantity of blood missing. It was messy stuff. What the hell was his resting heart rate these days?
"Promise no' ta' cut me open n' harvest me organs, okay?" He joked, though the subject was not one he was unfamiliar with. Stories from back home. Stories for another time. "N' I think maybe let's try keepin' it close ta' the previous model if yuh' dun' mind. I dun' mind a few modifications ta' the look, but it's grown on me fer' the most part."
The last iteration of his hero outfit laid across the same table the non-disclosure agreement sat on, Farrin having left it there before moving for the scanner. While dark attire didn't offer much of an advantage during the day, it did help him blend in with the night during those later practice patrols. At least it helped when his quirk wasn't fired up. Chronkinesis was a flashy affair. Emerald sparks. White motes of fiery light. Not really the best for stealth, but who needed stealth when you ran like the wind and hit like a truck?
Farrin tried to ease himself. Accurate readings in his most calm state would be best. A true baseline to work with. Hopefully, none of Ana's other tests were too out there.

Like a gibbon or something. Except this gibbon had quite a bit of spunk. A dark tendril or something of the like had made quick work of the first few enemies she faced. That confirmed it. For now, she was an ally. There wasn't time to linger on the thought, though. Farrin's own spiked-up enemy grew some replacement quills and fired away.
Farrin dove rightward into a roll, then lunged up onto his feet. He slammed the temporal pedal down and blasted into a whir of movement. The spiked caught only the time-turner's afterimage. Temporal power pulsed through Farrin's veins like lightning crackling through the storm. He was energy. He was movement. White motes of ethereal flames cast from his form and were left in his wake.
In a blink, Farrin was crouching before the spiker, then threw his first toward the thug's chin in an uppercut, carrying all his weight behind it. The crack of his fist echoed in every direction, but Farrin wasn't done yet. He grabbed the man's leg as he took the air, pulled him down, took a page from Web's book, and tossed him toward the next closest thug. The two crashed into the ground. A third stared in disbelief. Before he could react, Farrin closed the distance and jabbed the fella three times, knocking the daylights out of him.
The final three near Farrin, however, wouldn't go down so easily. They exchanged glances and, with matching shrugs, fired up their quirks. One ignited with flames. The second grew ice as armor. And the third was surrounded by axes made from light or something like that. Something told the time-turner that these guys had more experience in a brawl. And, aside from them, there were still a few more by Web. This wasn't over yet.

Living in and appreciating the moment for what it was rather than thinking about what had passed and what was to come. Perhaps more difficult in his case than others. The past and future were embedded in him in more ways than one. It wasn't simple recollection and imagination. His quirk constantly fed him what might be and what had been. Layer that over seven years living in survival mode and then four years spent in training, and Farrin's mind rarely quieted enough for him to take in a moment. It was only in the middle of a scrap or with a small handful of people that he could center on the here and now. Natsumi was slowly becoming friends enough that she ranked among those few.
"How'd yuh' deal wit' it, though? I imagine because o' yer parents, yer' family was still hounded a bunch by the media, no? Or are they more tame 'ere? Back home, politicians are second only ta' celebrities when it comes ta' paparazzi n' the like. Luckily, when heroes take off the garb, they're far less recognized. Worked fer' me family when I was a tyke, but was that the case wit' yer family?"
A turn in the conversation. Farrin was certainly interested in learning about the country he now called home. But he wasn't some random variable wandering alone in the city. He was with a living, breathing being. Someone who was often now taking time out of her day to entertain his curiosities and educate him. He knew a little of Natsumi's life before UAU, but perhaps more interesting than the day's celebration were the people he was hanging out with and where they came from. On the other hand, Farrin wasn't one to share often. Maybe it was best not to ask. Still, there was little harm in asking. Hopefully, Natsumi and her family were able to whisk some time away from the cameras just to be themselves. That would've been nice.

Just as it was in Hero Prep, Farrin would yank Kenta out of bed and into the training fields if necessary. Kenta was his own obstacle, one Farrin would help him overcome, but ultimately it was his friend's wall to climb. This was the place to do it, the last bastion before they ventured out into the world and looked danger in the eyes.
"They need us, boyo. The people out there, they're waitin' on folk like us ta' become the best we can be, ta' keep 'em safe. Villainy thrives in shadows. It's our job 'ere ta' learn ta' be light. We can do it. Dun' doubt it fer' a second."
Melodrama wasn't a card often in Farrin's hand, but sometimes it had its place. It was true, though. Villainy spread in darkness, wishing everyone would look away until it was strong enough to snuff out the light. It was up to them and their peers to scorch away the dark before it became too much for the world to bear. One step at a time, though. One step at a time.

It had been a long, dull day, but one the time-turner could stamp with his personal mark of approval. He was proud of what they were doing. The first year's time at UAU certainly saw his abilities improve, his strength grow, and his will steeled, but he hadn't been expecting the amount of volunteer work. It could be monotonous, but its part in curing the world of villainy was just as important as that of hero society and the authorities.
Today, Farrin and the brilliant support student behind his hero outfit, Kei Hada, were lending a hand on behalf of UAU to a fundraiser for local homeless shelters. The hardworking locals, and even a few of those rare altruistic wealthy types, would partake in some small festivities in the recreation center and donate to the cause while having some fun. At the moment, it was Farrin's job to help set up a small lounge area where people could retreat for some time away from the hustle and bustle further in the building. He wasn't sure where they had Kei at the moment, but hopefully, the lad wasn't swamped.
“Uh, can you just slide it over a few inches to the right? Actually, no, push it left. Yeah. Left.” Mr. Nakano’s face was hidden by a rough floor plan he and the other event planners had thrown together.
If a sigh escaped Farrin, it was quiet enough that the middle-aged fellow hadn’t heard it. Leaning into the couch, Farrin pushed the furniture over just as directed. It was almost break time, though. A few more minutes and he'd go find Kei so they could grab some lunch or something.
