I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
So much work.
When Leonid had originally signed up for an educator position, he had not imagined how much work it would involved. He had been one of the champions of the hero industry for almost twenty years, he thought he knew hard work, but that was all practical. Crimefighting, interviews, commercials, sponsor reads, talk shows, podcasts, TV spots, licensing deals... Those had all been things that he went out and did, not things that he had to study or read up for or prepare. No documents that he had to handle, no fine details... He had always had people for that. Not so much now, however.
Now, he was flipping through his various student files, looking at reports from the most recent classes... Had to learn all of these things, had to learn all of these people, so that he could best prepare their futures. Coursework to plan, internships to find...
And then he was interrupted by his office door sliding open. What was this, now? Looking up with a brief flash of annoyance, he would glance towards the girl who had just sauntered right in and-
Before he could even finish that thought or register who he was looking at, she had introduced herself. Right, Takara Toshigawa, he had read her file when preparing for this year of hero studies, had found the matching names amusing, but what she said now made a cold feeling sink in his gut.
Granddaughter.
So it wasn't just a coincidence, then. One of his grandchildren had made it here, to UAU, and was staring him right in the face now. Beaming with excitement, radiating expectations that he recognized, and could not fault her for having, but that he knew that he would not be able to meet. The old lion froze in place, simply looking at the girl as she stood there beaming, wracking his brain. Toshigawa, so it had to be one of the marriages then, not that any of his marriages hadn't fallen through on quite frankly horrible terms, and he did not immediately recognize her features. Not having seen two whole generations would do that, he supposed, and so a long, cold silence would last between the two, as Leonid felt nothing but searing, poisonous shame.
What kind of man looked his own granddaughter in the eyes and couldn't even tell who she was?
Eventually he spoke, to utter an all things considered absolutely horrid question, but it was the first thing he needed to know. As sick as it made him having to ask, it was still something that had to be said. "...So which one are you from? Who is your parent?"

And there she was. Closing and putting away the file in his hand as soon as the tigress stepped inside, Leonid would turn to face his students, shooting her one of the meant-to-be-a-smile-but-impossible-to-tell-as-such expressions that his lion-like face allowed him, giving a court nod. "Miss Inoue. Please, come in."
All in all, Leonid's office was... Surprisingly humble, considering the man who claimed ownership of it. Generic, in a sense. A desk, a work computer, a few nondescript paintings, a large window with a potted plant next to it. A bookshelf with files and school documentation, only a few pieces of personal reading within - Leonid's own autobiography for one, one of the only signs of the ego present in this office space. Yet, considering the veteran's long and storied career there were no medals, no awards or newspaper clippings, no former suits or other hero memorabilia for the old lion. Sitting behind that desk of his, the teacher motioned towards a chair on the opposite side of it, meeting the gaze of his fellow mutant.
"By all means, have a seat. To sit on now, not to chuck in my general direction, we clear on that?" There was a soft laugh from the lion, an attempt at humor, just trying to make the atmosphere a little more light, here. Bring some levity to it all. Once she did in fact sit down, Leonid would lock his fingers together, resting his chin on his knuckles as he looked across his desk at the... Clearly uncomfortable student.
"Now, let me be clear. I did not bring you in here to yell at you, or to discipline you. I am not angry with you, Miss Inoue. I wish to explain what happened, during orientation, and I wish to apologize, because this was my fault. I should have read up closer on the fine details of your mutation, so that I could have predicted this. But I did not, I took my job far too lightly, and for that you have my sincere apologies."
Taking a short breath after getting that out of the way, he would look her way again, pausing to give the student room to speak. "Does that work with you?"

Every muscle in his body ached. His bones screamed in protest. Fortunately, Leonid knew his body well enough to recognize it as just that. Aches and protest, nothing had snapped, nothing was torn. Thirty years in the hero business and you learned to recognize what injury felt like, and this was neither of those things. It was just... Exertion, pushing himself a bit harder than he perhaps should have. Still not moving from his kneeling position, the old lion snorted with soft laughter.
"I swear, it felt like it was yesterday that I did something just like this with no trouble. Where does the time go..?"
As the younger hero approached him, she would offer assistance. Painkillers, first aid, ambulance... Bah, humbug. In what universe did the Silver King need such things over something this minor? He was going to be fine, just fetch him a couch to lie on and an ice pack. "Oh, don't worry about me. I've had worse from better, as they say." There was another small laugh and, with a grunt of effort, he would stand up, a distinct and loud crack in his knee popping like a gunshot as he did. Oooooh... "Hngh- Well, there is a reason that I don't exactly do these things anymore, but besides that."
Looking the way of the other mutant, he would mull over a few things, a few thoughts, before speaking again. "What's your name, lass? I don't mean to offend you, I'm sure it's widespread. Haven't exactly kept up with the industry, as much as I should have."

Chronokinesis. Local manipulation of the flow of time itself. Leonid had done his homework on all of his students, he was aware of O'Rourke's quirk and when he had read of it, the notion scared him. Conceptually, the sheer extent of a power such as that was terrifying, it was higher concept than anything he had ever encountered throughout most of his career. But, that was just reading about it.
Seeing it in action was something else entirely.
In a blur Farrin vanished, the veteran hero barely able to follow his student's motions. His fist twitched, just about ready to launch to try and clip the speedster as he closed in, but O'Rourke had redirected his approach before Leonid could commit to the action, whirling around him and, before the lion knew what had happened, he had been struck thrice, grunting in pain as the accelerated pace also did plenty to add further force to O'Rourke's blows, making the teacher buckle for a moment. Then, a split second later, a forceful blow to his solar plexus. Leonid coughed, staggering back with a groan, doing what he could to clear the cobwebs and think.
Right, so first year student or not, O'Rourke's quirk was clearly either very carefully honed already, or it was naturally exceptional. Either way, while Leonid was fast, there was no way that he was going to keep up the pace with his opponent here. But, he was tough, and every blow that he absorbed was generating force throughout his armor, adding to the reserves of power that he could add to his blows in the future. It was possible, not a guarantee by any stretch but possible, that he could outlast the kid's quirk here. It was some kind of enhanced state, so the fact that he only chose to activate it from time to time meant that there must be some kind of limit to it...
"Hell of a quirk on you, son." The old lion grumbled, raising his guard and keeping his eyes trained on the student as much as he could. Maybe this could work. If he could just, pardon the pun, wait out the clock here... Would teach the kid a valuable lesson in knowing his limits, too. With this in mind, for now, Leonid's focus was entirely dedicated to the defensive.

Well, some were certainly less patient than others as far as this exercise was concerned. In the Ground Beta control center, Leonid was watching all matches currently taking place on a wall of monitors, arms crossed and with a serious expression on a feline face. All of them had his attention, but at this moment, he drifted particularly towards the confrontation between Orion and Kaiser. That these two were some of the more powerful recent students in terms of quirk capabilities was no secret to him, but raw power output was not the same thing as control or skill. That in and of itself made this intriguing, and mildly worrying.
Beyond this, there was also the issue of Kaiser in general. Leonid did not believe in the idea of UA University as a rehabilitation program - He certainly had nothing against the concept of villain rehabilitation, but he believed that such a thing was best carried out in a controlled environment in facilities and with personnel specifically suited and trained for that sort of thing. As things were now, the former villain did not inspire much confidence and, judging from his comments during the introduction to the class, it was hard to say just how functional among others the young man was. Perhaps it was for the best that Leonid kept an extra close eye on this one, for either of the two's safety if Orion proved unable to regulate his quirk output or if Kaiser's... Tendencies surfaced.
Well, regardless, as the battle seemed slated to begin, the lion was watching.

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
The agreement and understanding was made, and once again, the other hero's high voltage began to flow. Leonid, meanwhile, was entirely focused on the incoming piece of heavy machinery. Had he been twenty or thirty years younger, this would hardly even be a problem, he'd be absolutely confident that he would be able to intercept and stop that thing. As things were now, however... Well, he could probably still do it, but... Ah, this was probably going to hurt.
"And go!" A quick exclamation marked the launch of their attack and defense combination. As the fox launched her torrent of electricity, Leonid kicked off and launched himself into the air, flying up against the incoming excavator, his body shooting straight towards the heavy machinery and, with his arms outstretched, his open hands would collide with solid steel. Immediately he shot back down, his body mass not even nearly enough to halt the momentum of the flying construction vehicle, but as he fell with it, he was able to divert it slightly, its arc rocked so that it would crash into the ground a few paces to the side of the younger hero, rather than right on top of her, though, well.
Seeing as how he was holding on to it when it came slamming down, the same could not be said for Leonid.
His feet met the ground first, and his entire body would immediately buckle and strain under the weight coming down on him. His leg gave out immediately, prompting the old lion to slam one of his knees down into the pavement as every muscle he had screamed in exertion, straining and pushing to force his arms - still wrapped tightly to the excavator - to keep the thing held aloft, keeping it from crushing him entirely. He skidded along the ground, leaving deep cracked lines in the road as he went but, mercifully, the momentum of the flying excavator would slow, his body managing to halt its momentum and, with a heaving exhale, letting Leonid shift the massive machine's weight to place it on its side, all of that weight slamming onto the road next to him. Gasping for breath, the old man remained on one knee, taking a few moments to let his bones ache, let his body complain... Hoo, he was definitely going to feel that one tomorrow.
At the same time, the electric onslaught would launch, filling the entire road ahead. With all of his energy spent on that last big move, Excavator had no stamina left to dodge with, and he was bowled over immediately, sent screaming and rolling down the road, prompting a low snort from the lion hero. That was it for you, Shaberu old friend.
...Well, he would like to quip as much, anyway, but he felt like it might be better to let his younger counterpart handle the arrest. He was just going to stay here on one knee and breathe for a bit.
Whew.

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
Well, it seems like the two were already getting on well enough! Or, well, 'getting on' might be a tad too generous, to be entirely honest Leonid did not even know if Borovsky had friends - as noted, an odd duck, she was - but at the very least they were already getting to work figuring out exactly what it was that Helt needed for her future work in the Department of Heroes. Feeling that he was quickly growing rather redundant in this conversation, Leonid would turn and walk to the side of the support lab, finding a chair to sink his sizeable frame into, watching the two speak now.
Well, they were going over strengths and weaknesses, potential gear that could be made. All of that was very good, even if it was immediately obvious to the veteran that Helt did not know exactly what to ask for. That was understandable, she had no true experience in these matters, and also had no context for what kind of capabilities she was likely to lack - quirklesness was her 'normal' after all, it was most likely quite easy to forget such things that most of her peers (or even Leonid himself) would take for granted.
"A weapon is all well and good, lass." Leonid spoke up from his new seated position, before quickly adding. "But you might want to look at something for your physical abilities, first and foremost. Armor, exoskeleton, something to let you keep up with the athleticism of your peers. Several of your classmates are mutants, and even the ones that are not often have some way to apply their quirk to enhance or improve their body's capabilities. Naturally, this is between you and Miss Borovsky, but my personal recommendation would be to begin with something that lets you keep up so that bat of yours can actually connect, then you can look into improving the weapon itself."

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
Leonid took note of how his blows were swatted aside with active parries - not blocked, but parried as they were thrown - either a difference between his style of boxing and the student's home-taught style, or adjustments in personal combat systems, the old lion had no way of knowing, but the effects were obvious, and he understood the point of the method. It did its part to even out the differential in body mass and strength between the two, it also made for an overall more effective defense, considering the bareknuckle nature of this fight. Quite smart.
Another chuckle escaped Leonid at the compliment of his last strike, and he had felt how the student had buckled under his knuckles for a moment. Well, good to know that there was a power differential there, no matter how slight. "Why thank you, lad. I have been doing this for a while."
And then, the kid rushed in, closed the distance and began delivering more strikes. Now, while old, Leonid was not a slow boxer by any description, and he was doing an alright job keeping up with what was coming in, swelling forearms blocking many of those strikes, yet absorbing a notable amount of force. O'Rourke was a scrapper, that much was clear, and knew how to throw a solid punch. Still, it seemed like Leonid's hammerfall right from earlier had spooked the kid, as he ducked back, giving the veteran the opening to-
Nope, he read that wrong. As soon as he had darted back, O'Rourke was back in it, dashing it and landing a solid blow across the feline muzzle of the older hero, making him take a staggering step back with a grunt. He paused for a moment, rolling his head, feeling another few nicks and stiff points loosen up in his neck with a handful of more small pops. His mouth opened into a sharp toothed grin, his guard resuming. "Now that, that was something. Hah, got me good there."
Still, he wasn't going to just take such a thing laying down. Muscles tensing, the lion hunkered down, body preparing to launch. "Ready to take things up a notch, now?"

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
Well, while he doubted that the girl had as much available free time as she was claiming, Leonid had little reason to doubt the fact that the girl knew what she was doing, or that she knew her own capabilities as far as workload went. So, as she ensured him that she was able to wrap up everything that she claimed, the old lion simply crossed his arms and nodded with another of his almost-smiles. "Very well, I will leave it in your hands, then."
As she began to work, popping the suit open and going through the circuitry and metal linings that ran along the insides of the armor's padding and internal mechanisms, Leonid watched along with rapt attention for a few minutes. All of these years, and he had never bothered to actually look what the inner compartments of his armor looked like, he had left all of that to the boys in support while he dealt with what he had considered to be 'real starpower work' in the meantime. Yet, the more that he thought about it with the benefit of hindsight, he would never have been able to make himself the name that he was without people like this. Deriding it as nothing was... Well it was foolishness, the foolishness of a young man with far too big a head.
But, this did not change that as he watched the support student work, Leonid did not have the slightest clue of what the hell she was doing. Simply standing around and looking over her shoulder wasn't going to do either of them any good, and he did genuinely have other things to see to while this was being done. U.A Educator, hah, sometimes he missed active hero work, he could have sworn he had less on his plate at the time.
"This time tomorrow?" He confirmed. "I will leave you to your work until then, in that case. Thank you again for taking the time, lass, I will make sure to talk to your professors, make this count for some kind of credit." A large hand clapped down on the student's shoulder as a parting gesture, as the teacher turned and returned to the door leading into the support lab, making his exit. It was good to know that the younger generation could be relied on, even if he could only hope that he hadn't caused her too much trouble.

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
With a final exhale, Leonid took a step back to watch the students speaking amongst one another, beginning to split up into their various groups, ready to be introduced to the many sights that U.A. University had to offer. All in all, this batch seemed... Promising, some high points, some low points, some that, if he was entirely honest, he was fairly convinced wouldn't make it, but he was ready to be proven wrong. Tardiness, violent tendencies, from some even obvious indifference, yet also ambition, already present, alongside bravery and obvious drive. Yes, the old lion had good feelings.
This was the first step.
For them, the first step towards heroism, towards becoming the very bulwark of Japanese society. For him, the first step towards helping them there, the first step towards giving back. The veteran had spent his entire career taking, ruining the lives of careers of his rivals to maintain his own pristine position. Maybe he could make up for all that here, the only thing that he knew for certain was that he had to try. Just as they did, as all of them did.
When the swordsmiths of ancient times had taken months to fold and work out the impurities of the steel they worked with, they had not done this because it was a superior smithing technique, they had done so because it was the only way to salvage flawed materials. They worked with inferior steel, and produced the best craftmanship that they could with their limited resources. Hard work and perseverance had removed fatal flaws, and ended up with something cleaner and stronger, but often still imperfect. That was the part of the historical analogy that Leonid had left out, but it was no less applicable to tonight.
Nobody in this room was perfect, least of all the teacher who had addressed all of them. But maybe, just maybe, enough time and enough work could improve what was there. Perhaps there was still enough raw material left in the old lion to create something fine in the end.
He could only hope, and until then, would continue to work himself against the anvil that was this student body. They improved him, as much as he improved them.
OOC Notes: And that's the end of the hero student orientation! Feel free to continue using the thread, if you want, but I will now submit it for EXP handouts, and will not be making any more posts here. Thank you again for participating, and please do enjoy the rest of the student experience! More is coming!
