I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
On and on the bastard went, making Leonid sneer. Justifications, excuses, circular logic that only really served to allow the gunman to carry out actions that, at the end of the day, he likely knew were wrong because finding self-justification for it allowed him to continue enjoying the paycheck. Leonid was familiar with that.
Far, far too familiar for it to really be a comfortable experience.
But no, of course the villain was not going to cooperate here. Thought himself special, just like they all did, but that did not change what this was. With a soft sigh the lion reached up, running his hand through his mane, shaking some of it out of his face as it had been whipped around by his rapid approach. No, at the end of the day this was just another nameless maniac that would be apprehended and brought into custody by the Silver King. He was not even remotely as unique as he thought he was, he was just another piece of Leonid's legacy. Just like hundreds before him.
"Right." The lion simply growled with a shake of his head. No point in further discussion here. "I'm not really here to discuss ethics with someone that just gunned down two men in broad daylight, and I'm pretty sure that you know that. So let's just cut to the chase, yeah?" Blue eyes glinted, a shade of a much younger, much more self-assured version of the veteran hero surfacing for just a second. Being back in the thick of it like this really brought something out of him, didn't it? "In case you haven't paid attention to your history classes, this is the part of these encounters where Leonid arrests you."
And just like that Leonid kicked off, rocketing forward towards the other party at staggering speeds. Still hadn't seen any signs of a quirk from this guy, but seeing how he relied on firearms and hadn't done anything yet? Noncombat quirk or quirkless were the most likely options. But he couldn't rule out the possibility that the man was still about to throw out some surprises, so as far as the old lion viewed it, his best option was to neutralize this guy as quick as possible. Just a couple of clean blows, get this whole affair over with.

Here the big man came. Leonid's brow furrowed, his feet planted down and his body tensed. Just as he had expected, the large, metal-clad lad was the frontman of this little crew, a battering ram meant to keep heroes away while they completed their jobs. As far as heavies went, man looked like he was one hell of one too. But, of course, this was nothing that the veteran had not faced a hundred times before. He knew this. Just take the bull by the horns, get this wrecking ball of a man out of the way, and focus on the actual troublemakers here. Easy.
The tackle came charging in and the lion raised his arms, catching Metalhead by the shoulders with the loud thud of metal meeting meat and immediately, Leonid could feel the raw force being exerted on him. His muscles immediately strained, the lion sliding back a few paces but, after a moment to steady himself, he was able to stop Metalhead in his tracks, the two now locked pushing against one another, hands on one another's shoulders, pushing for control. A "Hnngh..!" escaped between gritted teeth, as the aging hero could feel his body giving away. He was giving as much as he could, but he could already recognize that he was not going to be able to win a pure contest of strength between himself and the larger, denser and younger man before him. Needed to get out of this-
Shifting his weight, Leonid threw himself backwards. Being able to direct the push forward that Metalhead was forcing himself, the more experienced hero controlled the momentum of his opponent, throwing him and above, bring Metalhead up, over and back down, landing on his own back as he sent the villain crashing into the pavement behind him. There was a grunt of pain and a stunned moment that the lion would capitalize on, letting go of his grip on the younger man, rolling along the ground and quickly bouncing back to his feet, creating a few steps worth of distance between the two. Normally, Leonid's fighting style was centered on being bigger and stronger than his opponent, overwhelming them with force. Against someone like this fella, though? That was not going to work. Maybe if Leonid had been ten or twenty years younger, but he was not going to be able out-muscle someone in their physical prime in his current state, even if he kept himself in shape. He would have to rely on experience and technique to make up the difference, here.
"Barely felt that." The metallic villain boasted as he pushed himself back up to his feet, hero and villain circling now, a lull as they both prepared themselves for the next clash. "Hafta try harder, old man." And then he rushed forward again, like a raging bull, as Leonid rose his guard and lowered his posture. It wasn't about trying harder, son. The lion thought to himself. It was about fighting smarter.
Wild, metallic swings were sent his way and Leonid bobbed and weaved, ducking out of the few initial strikes before quickly angling his body down and throwing a punch of his own, a clean uppercut that landed flush on the brute's chin. There was a crack, metal warped, and Metalhead was clearly rocked by the hit. Not as rocked as Leonid would have liked however, he had expected that to at least stun the large fella, but instead a metallic arm continued to move, swatting into the veteran's side and sending Leonid flying. He groaned in pain, hit the ground rolling and skidded back to his feet. Hoo... Okay, that hurt. Bruised ribs, probably, and he could feel his knuckles ache from the impact on the metallic warrior's head. He had noticed that something else was going on down by the rest of the robbers, but he hadn't been able to assess any details, being all caught up with his given opponent at the moment. Speaking of which, here he came charging back in already, had to think fast-!

Seems like the roar had done its part in sending the gunman back, even sent the rifle clattering even further back just as Leonid had hoped. Experienced eyes scanned the surroundings, the figure before him, tried to figure out exactly what he was dealing with her. Initially he had anticipated a sidearm from the way the villain reached in and touched at his side, but when nothing like that surfaced, it seemed more like he had been feeling his ribs. Bruised or cracked bone from the roar? Not impossible, and an injury like that meant that this guy was going to be all the easier to subdue.
Landing on the road with a heavy 'thud', roughly where the gunman had been standing before he was sent skidding back, Leonid rose to his full height. He listened to the other speak. 'Had it coming', 'business is concluded', so the old lion's initial theories of some kind of assassination was correct, then. The veteran just snorted at the killer's proposition. Yeah, right.
"Sorry, but no. I am sure that you think it works that way, you underworld folks got your own rules and your own laws, seen enough of it to know that. Does not change what has happened here tonight, though. Two dead, a car crash that could have injured or killed far more. You endanger the people of Japan, you're being taken in and tried for it. It's that simple." Slowly, the lion turned his head from side to side, a few low cracks running down his neck and spine. Ready to go.
"So am I looking at a cooperative crazed gunman today? Because let me tell you son, if this is going the other way, I've dealt with plenty of your kind in my days. You'll just be another on the list."

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
Bloody active shooters in the middle of Tokyo now. What next, a bombing?
Normally Leonid would have some quips about this, assume the self-confident, assuring presence that he had worn like a glove for so many years back when he did this sort of thing full time, but right in this moment, he was entirely focused on what he had to do. He had never engaged with many situations like this in his youth, he had elected to ignore emergency calls of this nature, had let other heroes deal with it. Nothing glamorous about violent public killings that had already resulted in victims, after all. Nothing that could be spun into a great story for him in that, so he had not given it time of day even if he would have been the most reliable first responder.
That was not who he was anymore, however. That was not how he was going to act. His responsibility and top priority now, as he had heard the alert and realized that he was quite close indeed to the site of the incident, was to save as many lives as possible and to apprehend this lowlife before they hurt anyone else.
Bounding across rooftops in a way he hadn't done for over a decade, the old lion ran. His strength and speed, not quite what they had once been but still very formidable in his old age, letting him kick off and soar through the sky with ease, moving from building to building in swift, feline leaps. He was quickly approaching the scene of the crime and, well... What met him wasn't pretty. A knocked over stand, a ruined car, bodies on the road. So much blood already. For a moment, Leonid's gut churned, he had seen enough violence in his days to not be stunned by the sight, but he had avoided the more gruesome things out of a sense of entitlement. This cold splash of reality was a bit starker to him than one might expect for someone with his numerous accolades.
But, he also saw the bastard responsible. Slim man, masked and sharply dressed, carrying one hell of a rifle with him. Looked too put-together and too well-equipped to be a random crime of passion or mass shooting. Hitman? Gang war? Leonid didn't know, and he didn't care to know. He had his target, his first goal was to make sure the lowlife didn't cause any more damage to the fleeing civilians. Stomping off the final building, the veteran flew through the air and began to descend, falling down towards the street below and towards the criminal in question. Rearing his head back and then throwing it forward as he fell, his mouth opened wide and let out a thundering boom of a roar, the ensuing sonic shockwave blasting straight down towards his opponent in what he was hoping would be a surprise attack. No time to waste on being cocky or trading words now. Stun, disarm, apprehend. This situation was far too dangerous for anything else.

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
Now, the million dollar question. Had Tokyo really gone this much in the past decade of Leonid's absence, or had he just had really bad luck lately?
Seriously, this was the third time in a short period of time that Leonid had to step out of what was supposed to have been his retirement from field work because he just happened to be close enough to a nearby crisis to be the first responder. The sound of a crashing car had summoned him from what had supposed to be a leisurely stroll through the city, stopped only to pose for the odd photo or sign the rare autograph when he was recognized. Keywords were supposed to be.
Transport robbery, the old lion was able to surmise as soon as he saw the scene before him. He certainly had seen enough of those in his day to recognize one when it was happening. Didn't recognize any of the punks that were ripping off the vehicle in question but, quite honestly, he felt like he knew them intimately already. At this point he had seen hundreds of these kinds of two-bit gangs throughout his life, nothing new under the sun, and just by looking at them he could tell pretty aptly just what he was dealing with. So they had their enforcer, the heavyweight who put himself between the others and any incoming heroes, they had their quirk man, with the powerful enough power to make operations like these possible, and they had their leader organizing the other two. The head of the snake, so to speak.
Striding forward down the road, the old lion was making his presence quite obvious, no effort made to hide himself as he called out to the three. "No need to call anyone, lass! You're not leaving with anything either way!" He sighed softly, rolling his shoulders, warming up old, stiff muscle in preparation. "Right in the middle of Tokyo... What were you lot thinking? Well, not my worry. You care to be sensible about this, or will it end just like it has for dozens of small-timers just like you up until now?"

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
Alright, alright, so admittedly, this was... Stressful, to him. Leonid was not sure what to make of Takara's existence just yet, let alone that she was presently sitting right before him - his own granddaughter, in the flesh - but at this point, it was hard for him to not let her... Frankly rather infectious energy get to him. She was just so damned happy to see him, in a way that he couldn't help but to appreciate, and then she began to gush about his old accomplishments.
Letting an old "Hoo..." slip as he crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair, Leonid tilted his head slightly to look at the medal that she brought up. Good thing that she reminded him where it was from, actually, between the many festivities, accolades and celebrations that he had been part of in his day, combined with the fact that Leonid had the time had not really cared about what he was getting as much as the fact that he was getting it, the various medals and trophies and congratulations grew very same-y after a while. But the Victory Festival, once named? That he did remember... "Well, that brings an old man back." He chuckled some, letting Takara continue to speak.
He knew that the right thing to do here was to set the record straight with the girl, make it very clear that the man that he had once been was nobody to idolize, that what he had accomplished may have been impressive in parts, but it was overshadowed by oh so much more hurt that he had caused. But, he couldn't. Part of him did not want to let someone this enthused down, and part of him... Part of him was still Leonid, and he could not deny the powerful kick of having his pride stoked in such a way. Here he had begun to feel as if he had faded into obscurity, but here someone was, treating him like the icon of the industry that he had spent decades being.
Unable to contain the continued chuckles in his voice, Leonid would reply to her last bit of... Well, fangirling, no reason to call it anything else. "Now now, it was a little bit more than that, the roar was a setup. The force knocked 'em back and the noise discombobulated them, then all I had to do was close the distance, and, well." He closed one hand, clenching his fist and letting his suit activate, sparks of electricity jumping across his knuckles. Still a bit of a showoff, huh? "You have seen the clip, the rest is history."
"Quick, clean neutralization to minimize potential damage and threat to the surroundings. That was how I worked, at the time." And of course, it looked impressive enough to generate reactions like these, which was just as much part of the point, even if he did not say that out loud right now.

Hm. He might have gotten a bit too caught up in it, there.
His guard easing and his posture relaxing, Leonid would shift from his fighter's stance and onto a more casual demeanor as he walked up towards his struggling student and... Well, damn, O'Rourke was still raring to go? His brow raised slightly, mild shock at the sheer fighting spirit of the hero-to-be. Considering the heavy damage he had just taken he shouldn't even be standing, let alone keep fighting, and the old lion had no interest in further aggravating the damage caused. As far as he was concerned, this spar had done as much as it could.
"Easy there, son." He spoke plainly, reaching his student and reaching down with a large hand to grab the other, carefully pulling the time-turner back to his feet, offering support to make sure that he stayed standing. "You're in no condition to keep up the fight here, and I'm not interested in continuing it with you in this condition." A small, apologetic chuckle escaped him. "Didn't mean to go that hard there, sorry about that."
"But, you did great." He continued. "Couple o' years with a preparatory program and some coaching from Above & Beyond, you said? And you were able to do all that with just that under your belt?" He shook his head. "Absolutely stunning, son. You kept this old man on the ropes there, and you're talking to someone with twice as many years of experience as you've been alive." The old lion chuckled again. "Your only problem right now is that you're still green. Haven't encountered all that many different forms of attack, don't know how to respond to things that you're not used to yet. But I'd say that's the best problem to have, just means that all you need to do is keep keeping at it."
"Now c'mon." And he was beginning to walk now, assuming that his younger counterpart would walk with him. "Let's get you to the infirmary and patch you up before I get myself in trouble for knocking a student around." Giving the other a look, Leonid would crack another of his feline not-smiles. "Now, I didn't say this 'cause I'm not supposed to play favorites, yeah? But I see something special here, son. If this is where you're at right now, you're going to be something extra."

Alright, granted, Leonid had only been a teacher for short of three years now, he did not have all that much experience and he didn't know exactly what to expect from his students when it came to more eccentric behavior. Perhaps this was normal, or something that other educators would laugh and shrug off as they had already seen everything, including far worse.
But what the hell, though?
Having read over what was perhaps the strangest, and in some ways rudest ('Cat-sensei', really? He had a damned name, two of them, if you really wanted options) message that he had ever received, there was absolutely no question about the fact that Leonid would make his way to the Physical Education Grounds to see exactly what it was that Miss Yasuragi thought that she was getting at, here. She was one of his freshmen, and thus someone that he hadn't gotten to know all too well just yet, but after this display? Well, he supposed that he simply had to.
And so the old lion entered the scene, scanning the area and... Taking an admittedly longer time than he would like finding his student. He had been expecting her to be standing up at the very least, at attention even, considering that she had been the one to call him here. Yet she was just... Lazing about, watching the clouds. Again, what the hell, though?
"Miss Yasuragi." He called out, summoning her attention, his tone unable to hide his bewilderment and annoyance in equal measures. "You wished to see me?"

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
The energy and enthusiasm that the girl was glowing with was the furthest thing from matched by Leonid himself as he remained seated, the only thing keeping his emotions even remotely hidden were his animalistic features naturally keeping his face difficult to read to most. She had more aunts and uncles? Yes, almost definitely, more of them than Leonid could even begin to guess, as in that he didn't have the foggiest idea of the actual number. Well, at the very least she did not seem dissuaded, in fact before he could even stop her she had begun pulling out pictures, something that the old lion leaned over to take a gander at as they were shown to him.
The sight of Takara's grandmother - his former wife - did prompt some recognition in him at least, though shamefully, not as much as he would have liked. He had a type at the time and now, thirty years on without ever having cared much about the individual women in question..? They began to bleed together in his mind, something that he absolutely did not care to voice out loud. The sight of his son however, that prompted the cold lump in his stomach to grow, his muscles to tense. The spitting image.
His mouth felt dry.
And still, Takara continued speaking, and it took the veteran a few moments to find it in him to reply properly. A whole career built on playing difficult questions and entertaining journalists, and he was caught speechless. Eventually he did find some semblance of words, however. "...Well, it makes me very glad to know that you would be so interested." Not that he could truly fathom why, if his son had really spoke of him that frankly. "It... Is a pleasure to finally meet you then, Takara." Even if it honestly sounded like anything but.
"...I reckon that you may have questions then, for me?"

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
"Saving people isn’t always about fighting though sir-"
Well, while that was certainly true in a sense, Leonid had probably seen enough in his days to know that thread elimination was often to be a very high priority in most crisis situations. In the case of natural disasters or other dangers without a perpetrator, certainly, heroes did not need to be combatants, but in the case of villain attacks or criminal activity, his first order of business had always been to ensure that the one causing the situation was neutralized, that way they could not put more people in immediate harm, then things could be sorted out from there. Then again, he had always operated as part of a team, the Big Five had been able to split themselves between multiple duties. When it came to solo practice, he supposed that Maelstrom knew better than him.
Well, she offered to deal with the press, either out of a genuine desire to spare Leonid the inconvenience or simply out of a desire to not be upstaged by the old-timer, he couldn't quite tell which, but either way no issue for him. The veteran was more than happy to simply walk away into the sunset without having to deal with all the hubub, as indicated by the older mutant raising a single hand in a farewell as he began to walk. "Thank you kindly, lass. You did a good job making this old fossil look good, I'd say." He chuckled some. "I will see you around no doubt, within our sphere Tokyo is not the biggest of places-"
...Of course, while he would have loved to leave things there, it was rarely that easy. While plenty of the reporters and journalists would stop to meet Maelstrom, a large swathe too moved around her, instead focusing on getting comments from the veteran, likely hoping to make the story the return to form of a once-legendary veteran, something which made the old lion's shoulders sink ever so slightly.
Hah. Well, couldn't blame them, he supposed. He knew the game just as well as they did. With a low cough to clear his throat, he put on his best face, and he turned to face the cameras that were not already being shoved in Maelstrom's face. Right. Been a while since he had done this, but let's see if he still knew how. All part of the job, after all...
Funny, how such a small thing can bring you back to something you had long forgotten, but could never truly lose.

I got something deep inside of me Courage is the thing that keeps us free
He was trapped. Locked in a temporal stalemate that made it utterly impossible for Leonid to follow what was happening around him, blow after blow battering him faster than his eyes could track. He felt the impact hammering across his form, armor taking blow after blow and generating power, yes, but that meant nothing if Leonid was going to be rendered a state where he couldn't use any of it. In this moment, there was absolutely nothing that he could do but steel himself and begrudgingly take these attacks.
It was impossible for him to tell how much time passed, before the world suddenly snapped back to its regular pace as one of O'Rourke's punches connected with Leonid's jaw, sending the lion staggering. His legs wobbled dangerously, and he could feel that if he allowed this to continue, he was not going to last for much longer. His earlier analysis was true - he was tougher than O'Rourke was strong, but that did not mean much when he was expected to endure this kind of punishment. Dammit, think you old coot, you had dealt with faster opponents before. Chronomancy was new, yes, but ultimately all that it came down to was speed, wasn't it? He was tougher than O'Rourke was strong, he was ready to bet that he was stronger than O'Rourke was tough, too. He just needed one good hit, one opportunity properly capitalized on, and the window to get it. Perhaps if he could just stop the kid in his tracks for a moment...
Let's see if that trick of his allowed him to outspeed sound.
Digging his feet back down and steeling himself again from his moment of stun following the powerful blow, Leonid threw himself forward and opened his mouth in a bellow. Something between a traditional lion's roar and the detonation of a grenade blasted out, a thunderous roar that the veteran knew could bring down walls and bowl people right over. That, if anything, was going to give him the opening he needed...
Immediately following his roar, the lion clenched his fist tight. Do or die, all of the energy built up in his suit by the continuous onslaught sparking across his armor's metallic knuckles, jumping from one piece to another before flowing freely and coating his entire forearm in wild, flashing electricity. The lion stomped off, flinging himself towards his student and swinging his electrified fist in a wide arc, the singular strike that he had hoped to be the game-changer that he needed. He was here to teach, yes, but he was not going to lose to one of his charges. His pride forbade it.
His wild swing lashed forward, the lion commanding all of the power around it to release as the full extent of his arm. Whether it hit or not, a straight bolt of white lightning accompanied the veteran's blow.

Still stretching everything back out, Leonid listened to the younger mutant speak without giving much in return. Stretching out his leg, rolling his shoulders, arching his back, tilting his head from side to side. Well... He was certainly getting stiffer, that was for certain, but evidently these things were not exactly his wheelhouse anymore... Well, not that he minded terribly, regardless. People like the other hero beside him were the very reason why he didn't have to bother anymore, after all.
"Maelstrom, huh?" He nodded, a small glint in his blue eyes. "Hell of a name. Don't you worry about your civilian identity, work names are all we need, aren't they?" He chuckled some. Lord knew that far more people knew Leonid than Raiomaru Toshigawa, that was for certain. At the end of the day, there came a certain point where either name was just as much a 'real name' as the other, didn't it?
On her next comment of 'a pity' he gave her another glance, then shook his head. "Ah, don't worry yourself with Shaberu. At this point this is just what he's like, unlikely to change if he hasn't already." There was a small shrug from the lion. "It is what it is, some people simply don't want to be helped-"
Before he could continue, the sound of traffic cut him off. Seems like some had caught that the action had winded down, and now reports were swarming in, news crews and journalists... The veteran let out another short, barking laugh, lips curling up in one of his not-grins. "Look at that, the circus is in town already. Would you want to deal with these?" A look towards Maelstrom to confirm. He didn't want to steal the young'uns thunder, after all.

Well then, his own apprehensions for the practical side of what Miss Helt was suggesting or not, Leonid had to admit that as he leaned back and listened to the conversation being had, he was enjoying what he was hearing. The both of them were putting their heads together, discussing wants and needs, matching what Helt had in mind with Borovsky's capabilities and engineering mind - This was exactly what he had hoped for when he had thought of the idea to put the two of them together. This was good.
So, when he was rather haphazardly shooed out of the workshop - Even if it did prompt a tinge of irritation, that was not the tone he'd expect to be taken with him - he simply stood up and and moved to leave alongside Helt, giving Borovsky a nod and a small chuckle at what he imagined to be a joke. "Oh, most certainly, I wish to see how this progresses myself. But I would hope that UA is well-funded enough to afford some test dummies for the purposes of testing support gear, and not be in such a sorry state that teachers would need to substitute the role, no?"
...At least he assumed that it was a joke.
Borovsky was joking, right?

A lot of work. Yeah, Leonid could tell as much. The student continued to whirl around him, and there was absolutely nothing that he could do to stop him. His arms were up, his guard was maintained and he was able to protect himself from further jaw, face or chin strikes, but he couldn't do anything about everything else. He continued to absorb jabs and hooks across his back, sides, core, sudden kicks that dug into him and made his posture waver, his knees buckle. He didn't quite crumple but all of it stung, and as much was clear by the lion's reactions.
Suddenly, O'Rourke was in front of him, ducking down and throwing a powerful strike to his gut that made Leonid cough with a gurgle, making him stagger back. He clenched his fist - a small flash of electricity sparking across his suit's metallic knuckles in the process, now well charged up by the force of all of the rapid battering that the hero-to-be had dealt out thus far, and he swung down. Maybe not the best idea he had ever had, but he needed to land something here, launch some kind of counterattack. Turtling was a good strategy but at this point he was agitated, he needed to lash back.
Instead, all that he got was his knuckles hitting a field of temproral force, the green scattering and sticking to him like some sort of glimmering emerald powder. His entire body slowed down - or rather, from Leonid's perspective, everything else sped up, his own relative flow of time robbed from him - and where following O'Rourke had once been a challenge, it was now an impossibility. In the moment, only one real thought occurred to the veteran, well experienced in the matter of what he had been outfoxed, realizing that his only hope here was to continue remain standing for just some more time: Shit. Kid got me.
