Miroru's eyes slid sideways in a familiar suspicious glance- but it dissolved into something of a relieved smirk. "I don't think anyone here could put on a performance THAT rotten." She leaned back in her chair, appearing to pay attention to the show out of politeness but transparently engaged fully with the conversation.
"What's the deal? You hear the rumors?" She wasn't mad- as her expression had read, she seemed relieved to have someone else that knew. "No, probably not. They didn't really spread past the Association. So- does that mean you were, like, picking through my memories while we were talking?" Curious, not upset. Apparently not a girl who feels like she's got that many secrets. "That's a hell of a trick for a hero if so- it'd take a ton of the guesswork out of identifying perps." She considers, then glances over. "Am I close?"
She turned back to the stage. "... you do think they're awful, don't you..? Be honest? Nobody seems to want to believe it." She stares towards the stage, doesn't see it. "He's on a fucking pedestal, and unless someone with a louder voice or a higher approval rate calls him out, I don't see the public buying it as anything but a smear job."
Trying to fix things... Miroru nodded slowly. "Kind of. Yeah. It feels like shit, knowing everything you had growing up was stained with... corruption. I owe society a debt for the blood money my father milked off of it. I'll start paying it back by proving I'm a better hero than he ever was.
And then I'll tear down his false fucking temple and bring it down on every last one of them."
Pause.
"Metaphorically speaking. He's still about six inches this side of being vain enough to expect literal worship."
A slow exhale. A nod. "Yeah. It's bullshit. I can't think as it serves a purpose. Why not just be like. "You've all proved you've got the potential to kick asses- we're gonna sift out the fucking monsters in your ranks before they get a chance to ruin society from the inside out"?" She griped quietly. "Would have sounded a lot better."
The bit about loneliness surprised her more than the bit about her family. She looked back wide-eyed, hair floofing, before frowning a little and screwing her lips up. "For your information, I'm not excluding myself. I just have too much work to... go out and party or... whatever people are doing. I need to use my time to be the best hero I can be. I've got to outshine my dad, or I'll just be the bitter kid who couldn't cut it at the family agency and tried to sink the ship out of petulant misery. I deserve friends like everybody else does." She slumped in her chair, pouting faintly. "I'm just too busy to make any."

Miroru winced the instant the word left Hiyori's mouth. "Miroru-san. Please. I don't use that name, it's only mine on paper." She immediately whirled around as Hiyori started to undress, cheeks colored, knowing what was to come. "Sure, take your time. Let us know when you're dressed again!"
Miroru smiled half-heartedly, shrugging. "It's a lot of utility. Most of it's useless for subduing or capturing suspects. I still have to go hand to hand in almost every scenario as it stands. And as for how I'd do long range... um... I probably wouldn't. At this range... on a sunny day I could blast some focused sunlight towards a target but it's really just suppressive fire. It's not at all safe to hit people with it. I can put enough collected solar energy into a single beam to blast apart a building, it's just- not a capture-type technique, you know?"
She shook her head. "I'd probably use a lot of lightplay to ruin their lines of sight while I closed in and settled things in close quarters. I'm best in close quarters, really."

It seemed like the hero was going to take on all three of the targets at once, which was brave, but- Miroru wasn't sure what else she might have up her sleeve to deal with the other two. The one seemed able to mold his body around incoming attacks, and the other was just grounded by virtue of being solid metal. Miroru hoped the hero might have an answer for that one, but the splitform fellow... she felt like she needed to help if she could.
And she knew she was able.
The redhead leaped onto the railing of the second story walkway as the splitter and the metal perp rushed in towards Skald as she hurled slender coils of lightning at them- and a huge blast towards the puker, whose defenses literally evaporated, taking a big chunk of her attack with it before getting smashed by the rest and howling as he was hurled off his feet! "GYAGH! FUCKING... WASTE THIS BEAST BITCH!"
As the other pair tried to, after shrugging off or dodging the weak attacks aimed their way, the splitting perp abruptly slammed face down onto the ground as if smashed down by a hammer- or an invisible fox-girl plunging onto his back from the second floor! Screeching, he yowled, "WHO THE FUCK JUST HIT ME?! I'M GONNA CHOKE YOU WITH YOUR OWN INTESTIGYAAAAGH!"
He shrieked again as a foot slammed into his jaw as he tried to stand, launching him in a 180 flip onto his back as he spat blood! "Th'ffack... thum kinna ghoft! THOW YOTHELF!"
Meanwhile, the steelworker rushed Skald from behind and aimed a haymaker at the back of her head!

The charge of electricity kept growing and approaching, but they didn't seem to be part of the group on the ground floor. So either a hero, a vigilante, or a really unlucky trump card for these bigoted assholes. The answer came shortly enough as the figure collecting the lightning came into view- an odd, fox-like person charging into battle spewing lightning like a hydra puking out a stormcloud!
Miroru noted the lightning bolts coursing towards the perps and their guns, but knew enough about metallurgy to realize the very real danger of setting off all the rounds at once. Grimacing, she abandoned her infrared ban and grabbed the bolts aiming at the barrels and directed them herself, using them to circulate through the barrels as make-shift induction coils until the heat melted the barrels.
Half the thugs collapsed from the powerful taser blasts, dropping their slagged guns to the sides (it was entirely possible Skald would have been able to melt the barrels herself, but Miroru had judged it not worth taking the chance when she could ensure the process safely) as they dropped. The other three resisted in various ways- one by turning into solid steel, another by opening a hole in his body to dodge the bolt, and a third by puking up noxious liquid to block and dissipate the lightning, leaving the three of them against what sure seemed to be one hero!

Miroru paused as she felt the surge in electrical potential rising off a ways, frowning. She wasn't picking up any outgoing signals, so it didn't seem like they were communicating with the Hero Association. She couldn't see the source from just here, so she kept working her way towards the gunfire.
A half-dozen armed perpetrators were on the ground floor, opening fire into stores seemingly at random. Miroru, though, noted a pattern quickly- the stores they were aiming at had either patrons, employees, or advertisements who had visible mutations.
Gritting her teeth as she made the connection, Miroru considered her options, and hurried into a clothing store with a damaged storefront, grabbing a hanger and bending it out of place so she could jam it into a wall socket. She blocked the surge of electricity from reaching her, and moved to peer down at the criminals. She had a hail mary if she needed it, but for now, she reached down and simply halted the movement of all the infrared light in the area- including that created by combustion, killing the ability of the firing caps to ignite the propellant and stopping the gunfire dead, leaving a set of heavily -and uselessly- armed and very confused bigots on the ground floor!

It was always a bit relieving to be able to keep the pro heroes nearby in good moods. Angry, powerful people felt like echoes of her father and it was extremely hard to suppress the urge to run and hide. Shu getting to show off and praise his kid seemed to make him quite happy, and Miroru was more than pleased to bask in that safe spot.
"Okay. I guess I can understand. I feel connected to the EM fields around me- I just don't... identify with them, so that sorta explains my disconnect with the idea."
"Oh, it gets worse," drawled Miroru. "I'm the YOUNGEST. I've got older brothers. He filled an entire agency with the rest of his kids. But since I didn't get his amazing, all-important quirk, and can't even generate static cling without some energy to play with in the first place..."
She shrugged.
"It's fine. I wouldn't have been a part of anything to do with him anyway. Missing out on his quirk is just icing on the cake."
She looked up and shook her head. "No, not adopted, just- what's the line, "That's the trauma talking"?" She said drily. "Get burned enough and you get a feel for how to keep everyone else's hands off the stove."

"Yeah, I'd buy that," Miroru stated as Hiyori theorized more similarity on her side. "And yeah. Mine is like "science- the quirk." I've had to do a ton of studying to do a lot of the more interesting stuff, like making colors out of white light, bending and directing it, plus disrupting radio waves and things. I can actually send texts by sending my phone bluetooth signals. Incoming signals are way too compressed for me to translate but I can tell when they're there."
Miroru tapped her chin in consideration over Jun's quirk, distracted until Hiyori spoke. "Oh! I'm here to practice with some offensive ideas. It's still not much compared to these cannons, but I gotta at least put in the work at target practice, even if it's just spotlights."
It was fascinating to know they just worked, regardless of Jun's actual understanding, which made Miroru further intrigued indeed. "Well- I dunno much else about accuracy besides practicing, but if we're in the field together, it might be possible to let me do the aiming?" Miroru wondered aloud. "Do you want to try it?"

Another thing Miroru didn't really clock about herself. In a world full of heroes with massive, fantastic builds, she saw herself as a small girl with floofy hair- not as the carefully sculpted fighter she was. She knew she could handle herself in a fight, but again, it was tainted by her exposure to pro heroics all her life- she was, in reality, a world-class hand to hand fighter in any arena besides heroics, and her body showed it.
Just one more blind spot in her self esteem carved out by her upbringing.
The transformation was startling- unsettling, honestly- and Miroru's mouth gaped a tiny bit. "Don't... you... feel... I dunno, disjointed..? I can see the massive tactical advantages, but if I was disconnected from part of my body, or the entire thing, I'd feel so... adrift, I think."
Miroru had to smother a laugh at such a humble understatement. "Introduction indeed. I'm Miroru. It's nice to meet you." It took a long moment for her to push past her reluctance to share any more. He could see her struggling with it, observant as he was. At last, she sighed a bit. "Rokuhane Miroru."
As in the daughter of Incapacitor, father and lead hero of the Thunderhead family agency, one and all the children trained by his hand alone.
Except this one.
She did her best to change the subject, offering, "I can't do anything as fantastic than that. Mostly it's just tricks of the light. Or some pretty straightforward electromagnetic manipulations. Definitely can't turn into a thunderbolt or anything as visually spectacular as that!" She was looking up at him through her bangs now. Hiding behind them. Hoping no bells rang at her father's name. And uncomfortably confident some would.

"Maybe I will! Change my mind!" Miroru chirped pleasantly, pausing briefly to look off to the side, squinting for a moment. Something had felt...
Hm.
Gone. Strange.
Shaking her head, Miroru turned back as her racing companion crouched, preparing for the race, nodding her way as the air darkened, the light dimmed as she gleaned the abundant energy to fuel her gadgets, powering the electromagnetic-driven turbines in the boots!
"ON your mark... GET set..."
"GO!"
Miroru took off alongside Takara, sprinting beside her and keeping pretty even pace- and losing a bit of her stride from her unfamiliarity with the weight and soles of the new boots. Where the first piles of "garbage" spread across the alley, though, Miroru was able to flex her quirk and catapult herself into the air with a surprised wail that trailed into a peal of laughter as she flopped onto her back in another "garbage" pile, scrambling back to her feet and snickering as she did her best to keep things competitive!

"Thanks."
This was the rough thing about all the old guard. She could never be entirely sure who was gonna be decent and who was like her dad. She'd been burned so badly, though, that the more in common they had with her father, the less she trusted them enough to give them a chance to prove otherwise.
Demura had done a good job being up front with his priorities and stances, though. That hadn't gone so bad at all.
The confection plunked in front of her dragged the redhead back to the present, and she blinked in surprise. "Oh. I- thank you. I didn't- you didn't have to." She took it, though, and let out a tiny little breathy noise. "Red bean... okay. Double thanks. I love these. They're like. Sweet and savory all at the same time."
She seemed a touch surprised to get clocked so easily, but entrance exams and that quirk demonstration had garnered a lot of attention and talk. After all, that one kid had turned into a black hole, and she'd-
Well. They told her to show off.
"YOUR daughter probably doesn't have to -worry- so much," Miroru murmured, taking the coffee with another silent thanks and sipping it. "-but it's really good she's putting work in anyway. U.A.U. has a lot of legacy kids. I still don't know for sure how much weight my dad's reputation counted for. There's exam scores, but- it's hectic. It's not like scores couldn't be fudged. Nobody'd know."
Worth it? "... I think if that's the road she wants to take, there's worse paths to take. I'm hoping that by the time she's looking at entrance exams, maybe the culture will have shifted for the better. I'm trying to... I dunno. Cultivate a more communal approach to heroism. Less cutthroat posturing and sponsorship deals. We'll see if it takes."
She went quiet during the exchange with the regular, and frowned faintly at the display of his quirk. "... huh. I always thought it was some sort of magnetic control or... nanite swarm, but there's no EM signals or magnetic fields. You've got direct control, don't you?"

"Ahaha, sorry, sorry!" Miroru insisted, hands up in apology. "I wasn't trying to sneak up, I'm just small, promise!" She winced herself to see Jun in pain, offering a quiet, "Really, I apologize, Senpai, I didn't mean to make you strain yourself..."
She nodded a bit at the deflection. "Okay, well- if you ever wanna, or if you want to aim me in your mom's direction, just say so! I'm really curious!"
Miroru caught note of the approaching pipsqueak- hard not to notice an lightless person-shaped space radiating infrared moving towards you, after all- and turned round to spot the petite blonde as she huffed a little. "Doesn't need a propellant. I mean, well- it's POSSIBLE, but the whole point of the cannonform is to direct high-pressure gas releases as propellant, and to provide rifling to stabilize the projectile, right? If she doesn't use propellant, why make a cannon?"
Need some work? Miroru looked downrange and whistled proudly. "You wiped out two of your targets at, what, almost a hundred meters? What the heck is your metric for "good enough" then?"

Miroru took a deep breath to soak up the scent of roasted coffee and brewed drinks, and sighed a tiny bit. This place felt-
"AH! I'm sorry! I wasn't paying attention, I should have known you were there, I'm so sorr... nice..?" Miroru muttered, bewildered as Mari swept past her, leaving the redhead in the cafe with the Quiet Crowd.
Plus the tanuki.
She zoned back in as she was invited to the bar, where she headed, setting her bookbag on the ground and taking the menu to scan over it. "Well, thank you. I feel quite welcomed." Her eyes flicked up after she sat down, then back again. A familiar sight, but she said nothing. If anything, her expression tensed a little bit.
After all, her track record with pro heroes wasn't the best.
"Ah, I'll have... just a cup of coldbrew. Black's fine. Thanks."
Maybe it wasn't him.
