"At least... geez. That's harsh. I'd like to think there's some use to the academic courses. Like, sure, I get your points- the ethics courses clearly haven't done their job, for instance- but we won't be heroes forever. Getting an education we can use after is useful. Just- later," Miroru posited, pausing. "Really? The ethics teacher sucks? That's..." That clearly frustrated Miroru greatly, on the spot.
"I've got that, at least. I'm not too strong, really, but I'm really fast. For someone without a quickness quirk, anyhow. But getting around is super easy." Miroru was proud of that. It was one of the only two big accomplishments she had to herself. That and her hand to hand talent, but she'd sound like a bully mentioning that.
Thea stood, and offered her arm, and Miroru stood as well, taking the offered arm with a grin. The gesture gave her mental pause, even as she slid her arm into Thea's. That gesture... she'd expect it from a boy.
Something to think about later.
"Well, then, let's go! And don't worry- like you said. My PR strats are *great.*"

Miroru looked up as Shu explained those two things before departing, frowning in thought- but certainly not giving any air of dismissing his points. They were, after all, in the living core of a megacity, and if he meant to say that she wouldn't be able to drag fights out of dangerous locations... well, he was probably right. But if that was true, that did mean she'd often have something she could make use of in battle, if not always.
That second point... hm. He might have something there. On one level, she felt like trying to outwit her own quirk's... quirks... was disingenuous or dishonest, but it did make sense. With that, though, he deposited the signup sheet and wandered off.
She looked down at the paper and read through it, widening her eyes a little bit. She'd basically been personally invited to take part by one of the top heroes that Japan had ever seen. That... meant something.
She made sure to correctly add her information- Miroru, #XXX-XXX-XXXX- and then bent over a napkin for a little while before excusing herself without fanfare.
When Tanuki came back, he'd find a childish drawing of a raccoon giving a thumbs up with a simple "Thank you <3 I'll come again soon!"

"... yeah, I know," Miroru replied, looking a bit confused. "I'm just saying I'm definitely more miserable than my celebrity pro hero father. Everything goes his way, he doesn't think he has any problems at all. I'm not... saying I'm the most miserable ever. I *have* some perspective."
"HALF? You really think so? What sorta classes do you think I should avoid?" It was less an ask for instruction as an attempt to peek at Thea and see what she thought wasn't useful. Miroru trusted her own judgment to suss out what she could use and what she couldn't, but if she could get Thea talking about her thoughts on the matter, maybe she'd learn a little.
"Okay. I'm pretty sure between the internet and a good pair of running shoes, I can acquaint myself later, anyhow, and without getting bounced between classmates that could very possibly eject spikes if startled."
Drink? It was a good question. She shook her head. "Or. Well. I never have. Do you?"

"I don't even know how I could try to do that. I haven't got tools of my own, much less a quirk useful for this kinda work. At least, if it is, I sure don't know how to apply it to fine mechanical assembly and machining," Miroru muttered. "More power to the sneaksters, though."
A faint grimace. "No, my quirk's not good for augmenting anything I do physically. I can mess with EM phenomena that's already existing around me."
The other fellow kept talking, and Miroru stared back, vaguely irritated. "Thrust from running? What are you talking about, I can't get that kinda-"
She stopped dead, and frantically grabbed her phone, switching back to the page she'd been looking at and groaning actively as she plunked her phone down onto her bookbag and sagged back into the chair. "I thought ramjet was just the term for general jet engines. It's totally reliant on existing thrust to feed the engine. No WONDER this is all garbage!" She panned through a few more pages before stopping. "... turbofan. That's what I'm trying to build." Which should immediately make sense to Kei- her DESIGN was a turbofan, but the theories she was trying to use to fix her problems were specific to an entirely different engine model.

Miroru's face tensed, as if bracing for a blow, as Thea started that word, but- it never came. She relaxed slowly at the switch to a new word, and nodded, quietly offering, "I got emancipated, and changed my name. So by now, everyone who's met me only ever knew Miroru." A pause, and she snorts in sudden amusement. "Ma'am. You know, if you take it that way, he got my name half-right twice. I kept the last part, and the first bit..." Mam. It WAS kinda funny.
"Oh, I'm absolutely sure he does. He's completely convinced this is all his story, that he's the hero. Everything he hates, it's because he, in his infinite wisdom, thinks it's wrong." Like his daughter's body. And gender. And her moronic idealism.
"Oh, hell, if all I wanted was to be more miserable. I'd have had that medal years ago." A quiet pause. "But I know what you mean. I don't intend to be miserable forever, I'm just.
Scared I'll waste this opportunity if I don't do my best."
Thea wasn't WRONG about technically having time. She struggled to find productive ways to spend all her time, after all...
She blinked as Thea leaned in, but didn't move away, instead leaning closer conspiratorially. "You mean- bail on the tour and go find a party?" She glanced around a moment, then murmuring, "Do you think we can find one that easily?"

"What? No! You're quite pleasant to look at, that's part of the problem!" Miroru squawked. "It's just surprising every time. It's not like you're actually being indecent, it's just- shocking? Plus I'm a little surprised you haven't designed ports into your clothing to accomodate the dendrites. You seem to manufacture things so easily, saddling yourself with taking your shirt off to use your Quirk almost seems strange..?"
Now Miroru felt bad. She'd thought she was being polite by looking away and being appropriately embarrassed. She hadn't meant to hurt Hiyori's feelings at all...
She recited to herself, "It's just a swimsuit, it's just a swimsuit," a couple of times, then turned back around, cheeks bright red. "See? Everything's fine. Just like you said, it's more coverage than a bikini top..."
But it was a bra. And she knew it.
"Ah! Yeah! I can use that actually! Here- this won't do much damage cuz I won't let it, but when I've got enough light, check this out." Miroru stepped forwards and closed her eyes, focusing on the electrical signals controlling and powering each of the drones, lifting one of her hands-
-and then slashing it down!
As her hand descended, the light fractured halfway down the beam! Zigging and zagging wildly, a different slice of light for each drone fragmented off the beam and slammed into one target each simultaneously! It was... as she'd said, harmless, as the light was split instead of focused, but it DID show promise!

Jun interrupted just in time. As Sebastian called back to their original introduction, every light in the room had started to flicker, the room starting to darken and the air going "cold" as she started to eat the light in preparation to -complete another bit- teach Sebastian the lesson he hadn't learned the first time!
Jun announcing she'd invited him, and hearing him threaten to use her as an excuse to fuck off and self-deprecate, left Miroru agawk, staring in shock and moderate fury, before crossing her arms and glancing away with a prim snort. "HMPH. Fine. So be it. Welcome to the team, *i]Sinclaire-san.
[/i]"[/b] Kurokami Gen. Miroru made eye contact- she remembered that name. The asshole Jun couldn't stand, the one dating her roommate, wasn't it? Hm. Interesting. It'd be nice to triumph over an asshole, that was for sure. Her thought train crashed at that pose, and it was all Miroru could do to mostly guard the cringe at the end, and to clap politely. "Ah... here here! I'm all for improvement and teamwork, and hopefully we can treat this as a way to bond with the other team, too. Healthy competition, you know..? I'm down with pushing ourselves and really challenging each other, too."[/font] [/div] I can pay no price too great for justice.

Leo tucked himself into the maintenance room, and for several long moments, nothing happened. And then, over the loudspeakers-
"Rokuhane Miroru has withdrawn from the match. Leo Von Springs is the winner by default."
Once Leo returned to the surface, he'd find Miroru wrapping bandages over her wrists. She looked up as he approached, and nodded. "You think quick on your feet." Wrap wrap wrap. "I realized that all the options I had left to deal with you in there were overkill. I could blast a hole in the roof, but there's no guarantee that wouldn't seriously injure you, what with your head exposed, and if I dumped enough heat into the concrete to try to smoke you out, I'd basically have put you in an oven." She took a couple butterfly clips and secured the wrappings, admitting, "I'd rather take the loss than risk the options I had to get you out of that room. I hope you can accept that in the spirit it's meant?"

"I dunno! Is it? IS IT, LITTLE MISS BATRACADABRA?!" Miroru yowled back, grinning as they clashed, shrugging at the question before bobbing back into reach. "My secret~?" Miroru darted close and threw an open-palm strike at Freja's tummy! "One hundred sit ups! One hundred pushups! One hundred squats! And a ten kilometer run, every day!"
She was pretty sure that was a reference. That made her cool, right?
The next time she darted in, though, Freja grabbed her and tackled her to the ground! "WAH! CHEAT! SCOUNDREL! RAPSCALLION!" Miroru yowled as she was tackled to the ground- only to twist and buck Freja up and off her, onto her back, as Miroru followed and threw her legs around Freja's neck, grabbing one of her arms to pinion it and try to get her friend to submit!

Miroru suppressed a wince at that uncomfortable laughter, and at the cowering wince, too. That last comment, though, left her frowning. "Do you? And in what circumstances have you been exposed to such control, exactly? The use of Control-type quirks is STRICTLY regulated, as I'm sure you know."
The apology made Miroru soften a bit with a sigh. "It's okay. You're not putting me out, I just worried. You're not the sort to be out late with a boyfriend or girlfriend, I shouldn't think, so when you weren't back by curfew, I got concerned. You don't have to apologize. I'm just glad you're alright."
The redhead thought a moment, then asked, "Will you need anything to help cope tomorrow? Energy drinks, or a wake-up call to make sure you don't oversleep?"

Miroru caught that momentary pause and grimaced a bit. "Sorry. That's kinda how I feel most of the time. I don't get to fight folx in my spectrum of control very often, but I'm pretty good at managing when I do. But! Let's take this hand to hand and see what you can- OHO!"
The heavy bot lurched forwards and threw a haymaker that clearly had extremely respectable force behind it, but contrary to the action most would take, Miroru actually lunged CLOSER, ducking under the blow and throwing a hand out to intercept the laser with her Quirk , the beam zagging erratically in midair before collapsing into a glowing sphere of angry red light! She released the first beam she'd eaten as well, leaving two red spheres pulsing in the air above them!
"Say- how durable is your robot? How easily is it repaired? I could try a few different things to take it out, but I don't want to, like. Ruin your gear?" Miroru asked as she danced around the clumsy blows. "I could do an EM pulse, but I'd think that would fry some components that would be a pain to replace, right?"

Miroru, too, thrived on competition, though she had focused mostly on martial arts and track and field. It showed in her speed as she and Takara both kept up world-class (for the quirkless, anyway!) speed as they ran, interrupted only as Miroru flailed into the soft "Trash" and Takara stopped to taunt/encourage her to get up and keep running! The redhead wrangled herself to her feet with a grin and nodded! "You better not! I wanted a competition!"
Miroru followed, focused for the moment on getting a more stable hand on the boots and their effects. The thrust was appreciable, but hard to control in sudden bursts. Ascending would be difficult, and landing was tricky- though, she supposed, she could use the thrust to help slow her descent as well. But that gave her an idea!
Takara maintained her lead as Miroru sprinted to try to catch up, but as they approached the trash, Miroru managed a trick that might actually get her a little bit ahead- as she jumped to clear the trash, she leapt as if in a long jump competition- and triggered her boots again, jumping a second time midair, clearing the garbage easily!
The landing was messier, even with the boots slowing her drop- she touched down clumsily, and staggered for a few steps before regaining her stride!

Miroru's ears folded down as she eyed the stormy aura of the Downpour Zone, sighing under her breath as she resolved to stay upbeat and focused to help the other prospective entrants from losing hope due to her downed mood. Her expression was firm and determined, her head held high, as she walked into the reception, looking up as the loudspeakers crackled on.
The storm situation was compounding the difficulty of evacuations and villain apprehension due to the flash flooding, that much was clear. The downed power lines gave her a moments pause, considering the ways that could be leveraged and mitigated, mind racing with possibilities already.
As they were instructed on what started their test- no, what started their TIME- Miroru held her hands out to either side. "Hold a moment. Don't step forward yet. That rule gives us time to coordinate so we're entering as a cohesive unit instead of as singular forces."
Miroru tapped her chest briefly. "I can manipulate EM forces and fields, like the electricity from downed power lines. I'm also fast, and good in a scrap." She pondered a moment, then said, "I can also illustrate safe escape paths by twisting and refracting light. I think I'd do best focusing on rescue at first. I can mark any civilians trapped by heavy objects if one of you is better at resolving that with overhead lights, but I think the best move is to have you two work on subduing the smaller villains while I work on rescue, and reconvening once one job or the other is done to finish what's left before taking on Bravo. The last thing we want is to get stuck fighting him one on one, or neglecting the civilians to engage in a bunch of spars."
She looked between the others. "I'm open to other ideas, of course. You're not obligated to listen to me, but I'm gonna be focusing on rescue either way, and I think we'll all make our best showing working together to get everything accomplished, than wasting time pursuing the same goals separately." She glanced forwards again. "Competitive toxicity at the expense of the citizenry is one of the worst ills of hero society, anyway. Showing we're above it is the way to go."

"I mean, I won't deny that the criminals he's taken off the street have made things safer, but at the same time, it's hard to justify the extent of his brutality," Miroru murmured, staring at the counter. "It'd be easier to deal with him if he was 100% awful and did nothing useful. But." Such was not the case.
She snorted a little at his comment, shrugged. "I know the score. I can barely be classified as an emitter. I don't emit anything. I can move around what exists. And don't worry, I -do- know the value of what I CAN do, and there's lots of useful tricks for logistics and getting an edge in a brawl, but something like that swarm you turn into... unless it's wirelessly controlled, I can't do much to it without a downed power line or an electromagnet nearby." A pause, and an admission. "Or a big fire. Fire's literally just light coming off of superheated particulate. So all the heat it puts off can be harvested. Literally just infrared light. But even then, we hit a problem all over again, cuz cooking people where they stand isn't exactly a useful heroic talent."
A bit of a sigh. "It's not that there's no applications. It's just not useful in takedowns like... at all. And I'm trying not to worry that it's gonna hold me back as a hero. The same empty places that are safest to conduct nasty battles are gonna mean I'm without any easy access to even the possibility of a downed power line or something."

Miroru screwed her face up a bit as she was told not to downplay her ability. "On some level I know you're right, but at the same time, it rankles. Like, I've put in tons of practice and study and effort, and a lot of it just... isn't applicable. I'm not where I need to be. Right now, it's a utility belt, a mirror, and an orbital laser, and only the mirror is directly useful in stopping criminals in their tracks. And that's assuming the perp isn't immune to their own nonsense, which isn't uncommon."
She shrugged a little bit. "It's impressive, but it's also just... not helpful in giving me options besides knocking people's lights out up close. That's all."
The idea of thinking about the unknown being useful when it came to street-level encounters made Miroru ponder a little. "I could try using that. Depending on what's available, I can mimic a few different types of quirks and only display a portion of the spectrum. Like, if there's a fire, I could use the infrared radiated heat to pretend I've got a heat control quirk, and then there's no reason for them to suspect I can make images and stuff."
She did grin pleasantly at the bit about what some are reduced to without their quirk as a crutch. "Gotta say, that's one nice thing I have going for me. Even without my quirk, since all my subdual techniques are strictly martial arts, I'm just as equipped to knock the socks off someone with a nullifier quirk as I am anyone else."
The next point gave her some pause, and she nodded. "Too much time thinking... yeah, I see what you mean. I get caught up in reaching for the best answer sometimes. I'll have to work on that. And no worries about the spotlight. It's really not what I'm angling for."
What kind of hero. "Honestly, I'm more planning for what sort of hero society I want to see. I want to try to help everyone else make connections and build a sense of camraderie that will help eliminate the presence of toxic competition among the Heroes of the Association. I want people to see themselves as part of a protective community, not a competitive workforce, so they stop tearing each other down and sabotaging everyone else to look better by comparison."
A deep breath. "And to do that, I need to be the best hero I can be to earn the respect of other heroes and the populace. So when I call for reforms, people see someone on top aiming to make things better- not some nobody whinging about the "proven" methods of better heroes."
I can pay no price too great for justice.
