Tokyo was a-fucking-LOT.
Miroru had needed to do some shopping for custom parts to further upgrade the mobility gear she was working on, as well as collect some study materials on electromagnetic control systems and applications, as well as some new articles on theoretical nuclear physics. All that done, though, had burned her out completely on being around crowds, and she'd melted into the backstreets to get away from as much of the populace as she could.
Spotting the little cafe in the alleys seemed like an oasis in a desert, what with the mid-day timing meaning it was likely abandoned as a bar, and it being late enough that the early morning coffee addicts had likely cleared out. She pushed the door open, her bookbag bouncing against her hip with each step, and glanced around to see what this place was all about.

"Wha-cha dooooin', senpai?"
Miroru quipped as she wandered up to Jun, watching her bombardment practice and squinting at the boxes- and then double-taking at the cannons. "Did you MAKE those? Are those-" She squinted harder. "... THEY ARE. You can make solid holograms?! Solid FUNCTIONAL holo- wait, no. There's- something more to it," she muttered, picking up on the holes in the structure her senses could otherwise translate as energy. "It's not just light. There's bits of... glass? In there? Something transparent, anyway. Is that how you give it structure?" Immediately fascinated, Miroru resisted the urge to try to dissect one with her quirk, both because it'd be rude, and because she was a little worried she might not be able to, and was concerned about looking weak in front of her senpai.
"You can launch attacks down range with those things, that's- amazing, really. How do you produce a propulsion force without a propellant or oxidizer? What's actually going down range, does it have mass like a cannonball or is it like a photon torpedo?!?"

"Oh. That's- relieving, actually, I thought I did something wrong, or you were collapsing from agony or something..!" Relief showed on the redhead's face as she sat on her heels to wait for Jun to feel up to moving again. She listened, too, as Jun shared, tilting her head a bit. "If I can ask... is that your motivation as a hero? Obligation to tradition? It's not the worst reason to stand up for people by far, I'm just curious. There's got to be all sorts of good and bad reasons. I'd like to understand them- and you, if you're at all inclined to share?"
Miroru screwed her face up. "I'm sorry you're hurting. I won't MAKE you go, but I will recommend it. Can I report that you're still hurting a lot and ask if there's anything we can do to alleviate it?" She stood too, her tail swishing behind her as she stood. It made balance easier, for all it made her wardrobe shopping a nightmare.

"If only you were throwing out hits as strong as your pun game, Batricia! Batamanjaro!" Miroru tossed out dumb names one after another, having fun with her friend as they fought. Still, she interrupted that swing, and things got a bit more serious. "Oh yeah?! THEN STOP ME, BATRACADABRA!"
Miroru was forced back with a startled look as the bat carved through the air in front of her face, her expression shifting to a delighted, determined grin as the fight took on a real note! The blow damn near caught her, but Miroru was FAST. That was her biggest edge, really, along with generally high conditioning all over. The bat helped to edge out that advantage, but Miroru's speed also let her dart inside its reach, letting her execute quick little combos to get too close to let the leverage the bat used to create power work against her, deliver quick, light strikes, and dance back before Freja could recover from her swings! It DID put her right in close, though, so if Freja went for any unexpected close quarters strikes, she was likely to land a hit or two herself before Miroru backed off!

Leo was completely right that he was being read for predictable actions rather than waiting to react after the fact, and his response was- actually quite effective. For the time between his adjustment and Miroru breaking off, her actions lagged, forced to respond after the fact and breaking down the illusion of being faster on the draw than she really was.
So, too, was Leo smart enough not to stand around and cook. Blowing a hole in the ground was, sincerely, something of a shock, and the image of Miroru reeled back, the broadcast of her expression and body language giving away her surprise at the explosive descent!
With him underground, Miroru wasn't about to sit around and chance getting surprised. While he sprinted through the tunnels back towards their starting location, she was moving off at an angle, roughly towards the hole in the ground but weaving into the alleys between the buildings. As for her image, it didn't follow- in fact, it stopped existing shortly after he disappeared- but the cool refuge of the tunnels didn't stay that way long.
Free of the complication of maintaining the illusory self, Miroru found a recessed staircase and ducked into it, taking advantage of being out of sight from all angles besides directly across the alley from her hiding spot, and focused on redirecting the infrared buffet produced by the flames down into the tunnels, directing them right on Leo's heels and turning the tunnel he'd chosen into an oven as the infrared light heated not just the air but the tunnel's walls, trapping the heat and radiating it right back into the air around him!
With all the running around he'd done, and the hot atmosphere crippling his body's attempts to cool itself after so much activity, it was likely that fatigue and heat exhaustion were going to start setting in sooner rather than later. Leo was amazingly fast and his reflexes were top notch, but using them in such a hot environment meant strain on his endurance, which paled in comparison to his strong points.
Meanwhile, while Miroru's wrists were starting to burn from using her quirk so strenuously, she had the benefit of a stronger constitution and freedom from the latent heat of the area- if Leo didn't find a way to stop this war of attrition soon, he was going to run dry much faster than his opponent!

Miroru couldn't help snorting a bit at being called a living weapon. "I mean, sure, as long as the villains are acting in literal broad daylight or setting a lot of fires." Not really contesting his point, but putting constraints on the compliment, as if she was on some level afraid of getting praise she didn't deserve. "Really? Your quirk makes you strong, too? I could feel the electric charge in and around you when you used it a few moments ago, but I didn't realize that the energy itself wasn't the primary factor of your quirk."
She waved off the compliment again, pointing out, "The light show, I'm proud of, but turning off the lights is literally just like draping a sheet over a bird cage. It's pretty from the outside though. I found it was easiest to just refract the incoming light and scatter it in rainbow sparkles rather than try to actually halt the light in place." She did nod along as he stated the importance of responsibility, though. That, she agreed with.
"Mm. Good plan. I also am working on some vertical mobility so I can shift the line of fire in situations like that off the ground floor and up above the skyline. But yeah... drawing you away probably would have been the play." She spoke without turning to follow him as he circled her, though her ears pivoted with his movement. "Stay to help the hostages. There's police in pursuit of the fugitives, so they'll be able to provide up to date locations to incoming heroes. The safety of the civilians comes first." As she spoke, a cartoony display appeared over her shoulders of each option. One showed a stick figure with a poofy tail run after a car and fall over exhausted, and the other showed her going into a building where puffs of dust and stars came out the windows, only for the door to open to show a few people tied up with exaggerated lumps and swirly eyes.

Miroru pursed her lips, but waited while Rin slid out of her room. For her part, she was in her sleep clothes, too- a massively oversized tee shirt with a print of the first issue of a popular shoujo manga with an all-boy cast. It was a reasonable thing to wear- not much would give her tail room to move without necessitating a lot of exposure.
The redhead got a funny look on her face, but realized Rin meant that as a joke and nodded. "Oh- yeah, I'd been thinking more that he might have -been- mister Hidey-Roomy himself."
The story was shared, and Miroru frowned pretty hard. "... are you sure that's how it happened? You had closed up, locked up, and then went back inside, opened back up, cooked for her, and then cleaned up a second time and locked up to leave hours later than intended?"
Miroru peered at Rin in concern. "Are you sure she didn't abuse her quirk to make you do all that? None of that sounds like something most anybody would do. You didn't find any of that suspicious?"

It really wasn't as bad as her anxiety was trying to make things out to be.
Miroru had gotten asked to report to Alexandrei's office after classes, a day or two after her session with Demura, testing her under pressure and discussing high-stakes scenarios and the whole power/responsibility parallel. She wasn't sure what exactly Alexandrei wanted to speak about, but after Demura had expressed concerns after seeing her Quirk demonstration (RIP that apartment building) she was a bit concerned. She was... mostly confident it wasn't going to be a big deal, and it was a pleasant surprise that there had been specifc attention given to ensuring she didn't think vaporizing criminals was a useful or appropriate response, even under fire.
For now, though, she tried to put her anxiousness on hold, and knocked on Alexandrei's office door.

"Aw, I'm sure it won't be... THAT awful... probably..? I mean he made it past the exams, so he's gotta have something going for him, right?" Miroru theorized quietly. "... though I guess there's no guarantee that "something" is public speaking, huh?"

As a student at UAU, gunfire wasn't the least common thing Miroru heard. More so with the attendance of one adorable little Wrenn and her propensity for firearms, and the myriad support students who developed all manner of weapons for their classmates.
However, none of that happened in the middle of the Kiyashi Ward Shopping Mall.
As automatic gunfire rattled the windows of the nutrition store Miroru was in, she ducked instinctively and blipped out of sight, light bent entirely around her to prevent her from being seen as she maneuvered to get a better view. There was, doubtless, going to be a number of calls to the police, but there'd be several minutes, if not longer, between now and their arrival in a force strong enough to protect the people in the mall.
Miroru needed to find the gunmen, and she needed to do it fast. She wasn't supposed to use her Quirk in public off-assignment, but at the same time... if she kept herself to stopping gunfire and staying hidden... who'd even know?

The maneuver backfired. The moment they tried to point at Miroru, she bounced the light back between them, leaving Freja pointing at a mirror.
"Pfft! What, some legacy kid born into the hero industry whose every move is gonna be flavored by her dad's inflated reputation over someone devoted to serve as a hero in their sister's memory for the betterment of everyone around them? That answer is clear as day- but I'm not used to getting complimented either, so I get you. I'll lay off."
The idea that nobody had ever encouraged Freja to take care of herself and learn to be happy before made Miroru frown and step closer, lifting her hands to rest them on Freja's shoulders. "Well, someone's said it now. And I bet lots of our classmates are thinking the same thing. Let us support you when you can't see the way to taking care of yourself. Just stop by someone's room and ask to hang out for a while when you need to, me included. Okay?"
She burst into snickering laughter at the last bit. "Oh, hell no. The TRAUMA did that."

"There is no waiting on the battlefield! EXCEPT WHEN THERE IS! BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY!" Miroru shouted from the crowd of images, still hidden and suppressing the urge to giggle at Freja's wild swings as she released the illusions and reappeared.
"This IS light! Illusions! Invisibility! The throw counts, too, cuz I was tossing around a lightweight opponent! Get it? ... cuz light?"
At that weak swing, though, Miroru frowned, lifting a hand to catch the bat mid-swing. "Hey. You're not taking me seriously. That was like a kindergarten whiffle ball swing. I KNOW you can do better. This is what you DO. And you made it into UA. Come on," Miroru said, dropping into what was obviously an extremely practiced combat stance. "Fight me like you mean it-

"Huh? It's fine, it's fine, don't worry. It's not a secret project or anything. I'd have to be pretty dumb to work on a secret project in the school labs..." Miroru reassured, waving her hands to try to dispel Kei's awkward response.
"And... yeah, this doesn't look bad, but it doesn't have proper airflow. I can get the turbines moving at proper speeds, but if they can't get air to shove, they don't give me enough propulsion to make them worth the time to put them on." She demonstrated, the room darkening slightly as she ate the light to create a magnetic current to get the turbines moving.
"I don't suppose you have any experience with nonconventional jet intake design, do you? I've been trying to look up ideas, but everything I've read on ramjet tech relies on essentially having the turbine pull the jet forwards, which requires a ton of air intake."

Miroru stepped into the room after showing the student outside the flier, and closed the door behind her. The room was empty of people, and she couldn't help feeling a bit unsettled. Taking an interview in front of a camera without another person there..? She wasn't sure why it bothered her, but it felt doubly strange to be in a classroom without the familiar thrum of the EM fields and thermal imprints people left by virtue of existing.
It was just her and some gadgets.
Still... it was another opportunity to present herself and her worldview to the university and possibly her fellow students. She sat down- and immediately frowned. The projector showing the laptop's screen behind her felt... tacky.
She hit the button to start recording and sat down. A moment later, she started to twist the light, redirecting and shrinking the display to a corner of what the camera was catching as she added a backdrop of a classroom filled with setting autumn sun, a picturesque start for the scenery. That done, she proceeded with zooming in on each of the questions in turn and adjusting to the next question as she answered them.
[What makes you unique?] The first question was weird, and the way her face screwed up showed that she thought so. "That's a strange question, isn't it? Everyone, by default, is unique. The question makes it sound like that's not the case. What makes me unique is being me- it doesn't need an explanation."
Sighing, she tried to smooth her expression as she continued. "If the question is meant to be what makes me stand out as a hero, I'd say it's my outlook on what being a hero is really supposed to mean.
Being a hero is about protecting and building up society as a whole. It's not about brand deals or popularity rankings or quirk tier standings. It's about making sure that the person you become when you step out as a hero improves the lives of everyone they touch. The heroes around you, the civilians you're protecting, and preferably the foes you turn in as well, even if that means having them serve their time to get a chance at reforming, though obviously their choices to damage the lives of others place them as a lower priority for that consideration."
She grimaced faintly, glancing off to the side with a glower. "I've got no respect for so-called heroes with self-serving calues higher than that. Go into show business or corporate work if that's what you're going to prioritize in the field."
[What are some random, fun facts about you?] Miroru's frown lingered, but cleared slowly. "Oh. Uh. Hm. I like sour things. Like, really love sour sweets. I make my own support gear... um... oh! I go by Miroru. Just Miroru."[What is something you want to learn or wish you were better at?] That one took Miroru a second. There were a lot of things she needed to improve at, and it took a few moments to narrow it down. "... I'd say... hand to hand combat. I need to have solid tools to take down criminals when I can't rely on my quirk. That... and talking to people. It's nervewracking."[Do you know any good jokes? If so, what is it?] Miroru eyed the question and squinted, and the overlay changed.[Do you know any good jokes? If so, what is it?] She snickers afterwards, and nods.
"There's a business conference for a big manufacturing corporation, and the marketing, executive, and engineering teams are all on the same train station to start heading to the big city. The marketing team heads to the counter first, and the six person team buys just two tickets. The three executives, knowing that the marketing team always has great ideas, buys just one ticket too.The three engineers glance at each other, then? Don't buy any.On the train, as the conductor starts down the carriage, the marketing team splits up and squeezes into two bathrooms. Puzzled, the executives watch, and sure enough, the conductor knocks on the bathroom door and asks, "Ticket please." Out comes one ticket, and he moves on. At the next bathroom, he knocks. "Ticket please." Out comes one ticket, and he moves on.The executives are of course delighted, and move to the next bathroom and squeeze in together, gloating over how much money the company saved with this technique. A few moments later, the engineers knock on the door."Ticket please." [Have any pet peeves? If so, which comes to mind first?] The redhead cleared her throat. Oops. "I already answered that. If you're a hero whose priority isn't protecting and improving the lives of the people around you, including the heroes you fight beside, my pet peeve is you."[What is your favorite place on Earth?] 6) That made her stop and think. What WAS her favorite place? "Um... oh." As she thought of a good place, the backdrop changed again. An isolated forest path between blossoming cherry trees. "I think it'd be Yoshino, during the Sakura festival. It's pretty, and the mountains are covered, so you can just disappear and walk for a while and usually not see people for a bit. It's nice." The fact that a lot of the background buzz of human civilization screaming at her quirk faded in the mountains sure didn't hurt.[Who are the special people in your life?] Miroru's face immediately fell at that one. Her eyes shifted a little, thinking hard, but...
She moved on to the next question without answering out loud. Which was an answer in and of itself.
[What is something you are proud of?] That question was easier. Miroru piped up gratefully. "My quirk. It's been a really long, hard road getting it to where it is today, and so much of it is a matter of clever application and scientific knowledge more than quirk clout. It didn't used to do... much of anything at all, so I'm really proud of how far I've come with that, despite everything."
The display of the projector screen slowly vanished behind the sakura backdrop. Miroru took a deep breath, and bowed towards the camera. "I am Miroru, and I hope my answers were informative or entertaining. I look forward to meeting you next time as Prism, the Spectrum Hero- but for now, thank you, and have a good day."
The room faded to black as Miroru gradually squashed the light, and once it was fully dark, she hit the button to end the recording, relaxed her quirk, and walked out, rubbing her wrists absently to soothe them a bit as she started out for the support labs.
