IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Aneko may have been tired but that hardly dulled her survival instinct. She knew there were some strange people in this world and she had no intention of getting jumped. Her eyes flickered from their dull tone to a soft, glowing red as she stared down the man in front of her; if they were truly some innocent person, they'd have no need for their quirk anyway, right? She kept her hands stuffed in her jacket, her expression softened as she looked at him with mild curiosity. She couldn't detect attempts at using their quirk, she just knew that he wouldn't be able to use it if it was working as intended. She staggered back a tiny bit as he was evidently startled by her appearance. She did just call out to him out of nowhere. Shit, did she mess up already? Though the comment about her being a child would be met with a stare of daggers, he didn't say it, so she maintained her curious gaze as her quirk remained active. Then came the excuse. "A broken-down car?" She once again glances over to the popped-up hood, "Ooh, I see." Ah, so he wasn't a bad person! Well, that was reassuring. After all, people who wanted to steal cars and such usually did it through the dash, right? "Need some help? I do stuff like repairs all the time." This would be how she'd make up for it! Doing a good deed! Yes, she didn't get to walk around the exhausting environment of a mall, but she could at least help someone out of her own goodwill. "What's the issue? Mind if I take a look?" She began to slowly approach, as long as he didn't stop her. but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]She wasn't sure how to respond. The clear enthusiasm from him was a welcome change of pace compared to many of the burnt-out second years, pulled through the wringer of U.A.'s support course and having their childish hopes and dreams crushed by five hundred tons of reality and machinery. Though maybe it was a bit cringey- not that she was to judge, honestly. Everyone was just a little bit cringe in their own way. "Well, usually the most eager are the first to get hurt. Don't want a professor to chew me out if something happens to you."Yeah, usually these things were fine until something bad happened, and she didn't want to be the one to ruin things for others. As he began to scan over the assortment of gadgets and tools afforded to the support course, she was beginning to collect her own documents and research, storing them away in her own binder for later use. Perfect chance to dodge her responsibilities as a student, and instead lean on her responsibilities as a senpai! Man, they were great when they were convenient to her. Not so great every other time. She still shudders thinking about the orientation. But shit. She really did strike a personal nerve there! She had shrugged off the possibility early but she didn't think she really did- ah, fuck. It wasn't some kind of heartbreaking story, at least, but she was bad at handling sappy moments. Far too much delicacy had to be put forth to keep things from turning awkward. So she clears her throat, trying to find the words to say, "Ehm, well... that's really commendable! I wish I had a noble reason like that. Turns out I was just... kind of okay at making things." She hopes sincerity is not lost in her own botched execution. This was exactly what she lacked skills for, damn it! "So, a mechanic, huh?" Change the topic! The one she learned when it came to avoiding awkward situations; a change of pace often left the direction feeling anew. "You've worked with machinery like this before, then?" She notions to the high-grade equipment littering the lab. She knows it's a dumb question, he just said he didn't grow up in wealth. Fumbling all over the place. "What sort of things did you make? You didn't, uh, take me for someone who just repairs cars, I mean." That wasn't... half-bad? Maybe she should've stuck to her procrastination. At least that wasn't a social nightmare. but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Well, shit. So much for one of her days off. Aneko was readied for a day of interesting new experiences, stepping out of her comfort zone to brave the mall alone. Not like she hadn't been before, mind you, but she had always gone with a purpose. However, with a bit of extra money in her pocket, she felt the urge to try out something a little more social- er, well, you could argue how social it really was when it was her alone but, hey, she wanted the experience. Unfortunately, as a result of her personality, she kept delaying the time she would leave. "Leaving in five minutes" quickly turned into "Well, maybe it's too early," which devolved into a flurry of excuses. Reasons to not push past her comfort zone, which led her to where she was now. In front of the mall, the sun beginning to set, and an unamused look plastered on her face. Letting out a long sigh, she'd stand in place for a few moments, letting her own stupidity simmer. Well! No point to let her day off go to waste... er, more than it already has. She quickly turned on her heel and began... walking. To somewhere. Why not explore? The only place she knew well was the path from school to her dorm. It wasn't long before she found herself in somewhere insanely boring. An empty parking lot, fit with a whole... one vehicle. It made sense, really- the mall was closed, why would anyone be left behind? It probably belonged to some kind of... guard? They hired those to watch the place overnight, right? Bit wild to only have one, though. The only other thing that could catch her eye in the vast emptiness was someone near the car, who was quick to pop the hood. So she approached. Curiosity killed the cat, or so they say, and she couldn't help but be curious as to what he was doing; she was too far to see any unusual actions that led to the popping of the hood, so she just assumed it wasn't too difficult to do so, with how little she knew about cars. "Sup." She cuts off the noises of him tinkering away, "Whatcha got there?" She leans ever so slightly to her side, a vain attempt at looking past him. While she found it partly suspicious, this unplanned interaction was mostly to make up for missing the mall. but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Aneko didn't understand. There was a clear showing of confusion that came across her face as he said it- was that not just the same thing? Things were difficult back then as opposed to just being easier now. Maybe there was some kind of difference between the two, something that only a veteran like himself would understand, but it wasn't something she exactly bothered to discuss further. "I suppose. I've heard some horror stories about heroes back then, though... though I guess you'd know more about the bad apples back then, huh?" It wasn't a dig at him. At least, not from her perspective. She felt a wave of relief as he made it clear that he had no intentions of getting a complete overhaul, although it was quickly followed by the realization that he could've just gotten someone else to take on such a task, as opposed to a student like her. But still, getting her own hands dirty through this task was a good experience and a welcome break from the unproductive loop of starting and abandoning projects that hardly helped reinforce what she had learnt through her year of U.A.'s hard as shit support course. "Well, not my place to get in between you and your sentiments. Not like it won't be effective with just the small touch-up and nothing else." The suit was pretty well-made. Not particularly timeless, per se, but definitely could still hold its own. An overhaul would pretty much just be reducing some of the systems to do the exact same thing, anyway. But he brought up a good concern, one that had her freeze for a moment, before she kicked herself back and let her chair skid across the ground as she stopped in front of a variety of materials, well organized, sifting through and picking a few of them out. "Pssh, I wouldn't have offered to do it if I didn't have the time." A lie. She was swamped with coursework as is, but she couldn't bare another minute of trying to make progress on it. After she was satisfied with what she grabbed, she pushed herself back to the desk with the suit, took it out and placed it on the table and quickly got to work. "Besides, I'm at least seventy- no, fifty- percent sure that my professor would prefer we do things that are practical. You know?" She wasn't sure at all. But, hey, if she were to be chewed out- she could at least sic them on him should he agree, right? She'd open up the suit to its components, following the instructions from the documents, and began to scan for anything corroded, damaged, or that has otherwise lost its lustre. Using her tools, she'd begin plucking out whatever was modular and required a change, choosing from the assortment she had taken from the lab's readily available, and far more effective, parts. "Anything else? I'll have it ready by... uh..." She glances over to the clock, unaware of the time. "... around this time tomorrow. Probably."but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]There was something about unexpected guests that always made Aneko jump. After all, she had become used to the silence of the labs and even found comfort in it. Maybe she'd even take a nap, which usually helps give her a mental refresh when frustrations were high, especially when she was stuck on projects. But, as soon as she lets her grievances out into the air, there was an unexpected response- and Aneko's quick to let out a scream before they can finish their inquiry. The unexpected jerk sent her leaning a little too far back, the front wheels lifting up and the back ones... well, everyone's done it before. The chair crashes into the ground, the support student managing to tumble sideways out of it, and she lays in defeat for only a moment before picking herself up to see the culprit. Shit. It was another student; one that she hadn't seen before, too. Fucking embarrassing. "Ehm... nothing." She tries to laugh it off- picking herself up off the ground and patting off any dust that got caught on her lab coat. She quickly checks over her workspace to make sure nothing fell with her during that crash, picking up the chair whilst doing so, and confirming that her shit was still good. Thank god. She clears her throat as she faces the taller student, a little flustered from the display, but otherwise trying to keep her cool. "I was just working on a... personal thing. Did you need something?" They weren't a face she recognized from the support department, so maybe they were from the hero course? Sometimes they loitered around the labs, looking for anyone who'd even attempt their crazy ideas. She kind of hoped it wasn't, as she was in a bit of a slump- the kind that she gets into every like, few days. Creativity was hard, okay? but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Aneko is unaware of the storm brewing behind the hard-to-read Leonid. Maybe she could've been a little more knowledgeable when it came to the heroes of old, but, it's not like not knowing anything has had any repercussions thus far so... perhaps it wasn't so important. "Well, must've done something right if you're still around 'n kickin' after so long. Wasn't it like, super brutal all those years back?" She knew that things naturally took a while to settle after the development of quirks, but the specifics of it were lost on her. After all, she was born long after the end of the vigilante era, probably past when he was in his prime. She had no experience with it. She nods along as he explains the functionality to her in layman's terms, coinciding with most of what she had seen so far through the documents, she had finally begun to grab the suit, lifting it and feeling around for its components. "Hmm... well, assuming you had it repaired before you stopped using it, I doubt it's anything to do with a broken component..." She mulls over it for a moment after, "Might be deterioration of the generators. This hasn't seen service for a while, right? The conductive metals could've corroded, the generator might have several parts that are clogging the system..."Many of these things were not 'immediate' fixes. "If that is the case, it'd probably take a day of work or so to go through the entire thing. I'd just replace everything according to the blueprints, it shouldn't have anything that we don't have in the labs... but if you wanted to modernize the components and systems, it'd take longer." Two options presented, one she was confident she could do, the other... not so much. Trying to work with older systems was a pain, as newer ideas and systems were often incompatible with them. She couldn't take on the goal of recreating the suit in its entirety, so she just hoped he would be satisfied with a simple touch-up. "It'd be the same suit, just with new parts. Without the explosions, promise."but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Aneko, on the other hand, was a very socially awkward person. Moments of prolonged silence are especially difficult as she was never good at reading the room, however, she felt like there was a pretty obvious attraction to whatever was going on behind her. It didn't linger for too long, luckily, as he was quick to apologize and introduce himself. "Ahh, I see..." It was taking her a moment to really think about what to reply with. "Right, lab access is restricted to the support department, isn't it...?" She trails off in her own thought for a moment, debating on whether or not to take him up on his offer. On one hand, he seemed like a chaotic person. Other than the amusement factor that comes from that, there was no telling what would come of it, if things would get troublesome. But on the other hand, it might be fun! Also would give her an excuse to stop working for now. "Hmm... sure, why not?" In the end, she shrugs off the dilemma and decides to just go for it. After all, if her goal is to get out of her comfort zone, she'd be failing if she said no to every situation that seemed the least bit troublesome. She reaches out, expecting a shake, and is left in the awkward moment of adjusting her hand to bump into his hesitantly. "Aneko, Ueto Aneko. C'mon in, just be careful not to... uh... hurt yourself." He said he was a mechanic, so he should know basic safety precautions, right? She turned around and left the door open for him to follow, using this time to think... what would she even do in a tour? Check out this big machine, it cuts metal just how you want it. Then this big machine also cuts the metal but, like, in a different way. "So," She breaks her own trailing thoughts with her curiosity, "You're a mechanic? Why hero studies?" Damn, ain't that potentially personal. Oh well. but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Aneko hated metalworking. Yeah, it was a necessity when it came to engineering gear that could theoretically be used in the field, where durability and effectiveness matter most, but... holy shit was it annoying. The room was always hot, you had to wear this clunky gear just for safety, and it always felt like your materials were actively working against you. All of that, however, would be fine- she could manage it- but the noise was the cherry on top that made it an unbearable workplace for her. She would once again admit defeat as she threw her tools back into their proper place (she at least kept public spaces orderly) and threw back the protective mask so she could breathe. She needed a break. Away from the noise. Her frustrations had finally caught up to her and she was making an immediate exit, going straight for the door and swinging it open to find... a person! She hadn't become so annoyed that she was ignoring everything around her so, luckily, there was no crash. "Ehm..." She had carried so much energy during her exit that it actually felt kind of awkward now that she was stopped by such an obstacle. "Can I... help you?"Maybe it was just another student who came here to use the facilities. After all, there were so many unfamiliar faces that she ran into every day, she was beginning to question if new people were being generated each day and placed into the university. Though, with how much she keeps to herself, it becomes pretty obvious why she doesn't even know the faces of some of the people she's in the same class as; it's not like lectures promote a whole lot of interaction amongst peers. but they tore me apart like a hurricane. Character Name: anekoSkillset: With B Engineering, Aneko is still developing her skills through U.A.'s courses steadily. When it comes to super complex or high-tech gadgets, she's probably not the person you want to call on, but she's got the essentials down and can help towards making your character's crazy ideas into a workable prototype. She prefers working on weapons and utility as opposed to suits, but she'll take any practice she can get. Population: Primarily other students of U.A., but she isn't opposed to working with people from outside the university. She'd be happy to work with a full-fledged pro hero (even if her skills might not quite meet their standards just yet) but she'll make gadgets for other factions, as long as they aren't weapons or the like. Location: Aneko has a messy desk in her room in which she messes around with ideas and low-level prototypes, but most of her actual work is done in public U.A. labs. Not quite special enough to get a private one, but she likes to book out any of the smaller, personal labs when she gets the chance. Preferred Contact: Dm me on discord preferably, as that's usually the easiest for me to focus on plot discussion. I'm not opposed to discussing it in plot_circle, though, should that be more comfortable for you. Other: n/a

IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Gah, Aneko hated these kinds of things. It made her so uneasy, even when she was standing off to the side and not the object of attention; she was separated from the majority, being the freshmen who've attended to hear from both professors and their seniors of the support department. After having survived her first year of the institution, that somehow included her, which meant that she could very well be subject to some of the questions many of these people have. Could she answer all of them? What if she freezes up? What if no one asks her a thing? Would that mean she didn't look dependable? Her worries were practically contradicting each other. All of these combined with her frustration at the awkward air brought forth by someone being late. She genuinely thought that she must've been out of the loop after ten or so minutes of waiting in silence. Hell, she wouldn't have done this if it weren't at least beneficial for her. Procrastination plagued her studies, often leaving her panicking to finish things last moment, and this afforded her at least a few more days to do nothing until the last minute. But, in the end, one of the department's professors did arrive- and chose not to sugarcoat anything! She knew the school was prestigious, but even that made her worry. But hey, she survived a year, maybe she was safe. Luckily, Aneko didn't have to speak publically at all, as wasn't exactly the "pride of the support department" or anyone particularly ahead of the curve; that had been a common theme in this school, really. Talents that were deemed spectacular by her previous schools were quickly matched and outclassed when she first walked through U.A.'s doors, and she learned how small of a fish she really was. Next was a student in the same year, yet probably the clearest example of her own talents being swiftly outshone by others; Aneko didn't have much experience with them, though she certainly envied their ability. But, ignoring that, what the hell was that speech? First of all, ow, even if not a direct jab at her, she was part of that group Ana referred to her as her peers. Second of all, that was probably the most hostile way to follow up on the stern talk the professor gave just earlier! "Oh my god..." Aneko pinches the bridge of her nose, fearing whatever may come next. At the very least, she wasn't going to stir this pot. She liked to mess with people but that only ever extended to bad-mouthing people one-on-one. She was going to stand to the side and be available for direct questioning like she was told to. Maybe like, a little farther to the side, away from any immediate swarm of students. Like, way farther. And god forbid she gets swept up in any storm that Ana starts. a a but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Oh wow, he wasn't stuck up like some pros could be. That's cool. For once, running her mouth didn't land her in hot water, especially since he brought in something kind of interesting; yeah, she made that whole point that most people would get this sorts of things upgraded, but there was bound to be something she could learn by messing with old tech. See how it differs from the new. If she doesn't even glance at what people used to do for these things, would she ever improve? ... Probably. They had quite a few conveniences nowadays that dodge a lot of the issues these engineers likely had to mull over for a long period of time to solve. But hey, getting experience with maintenance was the least she'd get from this, and it's not like she was going to be creating new, ground-breaking inventions every single day. "Cutting-edge, hmm? So it's not a hand-me-down..." She begins connecting a few dots; not to his exact identity, mind you, she was never huge on heroes of the past. She barely pays attention to hero media nowadays. "Oh, I guess you've been doing this for a while, huh." She comes to the realization with a bit of amusement in her voice as if it was such a small detail. She can only give a pained laugh in response to his joke, "Yeah... definitely need more on our plate." She's once again reminded of the multiple partially started projects surrounding them, having tried to... well, block them out of her mind for the time being. "Not like we can't distract ourselves with other projects from time to time!" Somehow, her productivity was far better when it came to shit she didn't have to do. "So, any problems, in particular, you've noticed after using this thing again? Hope it's not blowing up in your face, that'd suck..." She trails off as she seems to be done skimming the documents, now looking towards the lion. "Oh! I could make it blow up in your face?"She doesn't let the awkward attempt at a joke sit for too long before she quickly follows it up with, "Ehm, that was... a joke. Nevermind." Turning back to the suit itself, she waits to hear about any issues he's been having with it, left to curse her social skills in the meantime. but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Aneko was deep in concentration as she fiddled with a screwdriver, twisting it and monitoring each change in the tightness of the wire that looped through a device built into a pair of gloves, haphazardly connected to a spool of wire to feed into, then ejected and planted into a surface to produce the necessary tension. Being her own bit of gear, it was one of the few things outside of assignments she's been able to see through to the end. While she wasn't a part of the hero department, that didn't mean she wanted only wanted to make the equipment that'd be used on the field; she wished to be fully capable of holding her own. Twist, twist, check. As she saw the wire softly vibrate after each adjustment, she felt herself become more and more excited that she had gotten her estimates right. This process was pretty agonizing to iterate over, despite its necessity. After all, the wire was meant to run through her outfit- if she made some mistake with the mechanism, she could cut herself to bits. What a scary thought. Twist, twist, snap! She had pushed her luck too far, the wire snapping in two, likely originating within the glove itself. She let out a long sigh as she slumped in her chair, rolling back away from her desk, and the failure that laid atop it. Well, that was a bust! If the wires couldn't hold with that much tension, then anyone with a bit of strength could destroy the entire mechanism with a tug. Throwing the screwdriver back onto the table without a care, she decides to soak in the failure and just sit there for a moment. Not only was she putting off work that was actually important, like her assignments, but she didn't even get it right! "This blows."but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Aneko would be quick to stop any approach from the large... lion... dude, holding her arm out and insisting that she was fine. It was one of her many falls, and she couldn't say it was a particularly bad one. Though she did raise a brow when he corrected her in saying that he was only an educator- they weren't all professors? Was there some significant difference between a professor and educator? It was not a debate she wished to mull over, so she decided to treat him the same as any other professor she had the displeasure of playing nice with. Luckily, they didn't need to drag on any sort of pleasantries or small talk, watching as he promptly displayed the briefcase and its contents, along with some context for why he was there. Peering into it, it being thirty years old was certainly... clear. Honestly, part of her felt it was unwise to tinker with what could be considered a fossil with the breakthroughs in technology in just the past few years, the world of technology always volatile and unwelcome to the past. "Hmm... can't say I deal in antiques, but..." A bit of her humour slipping through, her eyes drift over to the well-made schematics and documentation, "... I can probably do something with this. Looks well-made, just old."She haphazardly picked up the documents and began to skim their contents, her eyes glazing over looking for the important bits in a sea of clutter, developers of stuff like this always loved to fluff their designs with fancy words and the first step of working on foreign hardware was always to try and dissect the meat of it. "So," Her curiosity was now piqued, old hardware such as this wasn't too common in the hero spaces, as they must've been more of a luxury back then. "What's up with the fossil? You've been in the game for a while, don't you pro heroes usually get these remade every few years when the new stuff hits the market?"Her questions aren't exactly meant to jab at him, though her harsh voice could certainly make her seem mean-spirited, alongside the lack of eye contact as her gaze was stuck mainly to the manuals. but they tore me apart like a hurricane. IN THE CITY OF FOOLS, I WAS CAREFUL AND COOL [attr="class","eire"]Aneko was pretty damn confident in her ability to wake up in the presence of her professors, but perhaps she was a bit more sleepy than the other days as his voice cut through the air and she was sent into a mini panic. She kicked off the desk as the chair that was leaning as far back as it could go begin to tip and, after a surprised yelp, she felt her back crash into the floor. It took a few seconds for her to process what had happened as she sat up, holding her head and wincing as she woke up. "Owowow, that hurt..." Taking a moment to let the stinging pain subside, she looked up at the large... lion person. Oh, not a professor of hers, then. He looked... well, presentable, so she doubt he was a mere student like herself- perhaps hero studies? She hadn't interacted with people from the other departments as much, admittedly. "Ehm, haha... no, I just prefer to work alone." Caught in the act, she was glad that she wasn't at least chewed out, and instead was joked with. She quickly picked herself up, grabbing the chair by its back and pulling it back up, turning it around and sitting back down in it. There, she was once again faced with her many, many failed attempts at finishing a project. She cringed at the view of it, forgetting what sort of process she was going through before falling asleep deeper than she would've liked on campus. "So, what brings you here, Professor...?" She draws out her last word, a roundabout and vague way to ask him who he was, and if he even was a professor; she was sure that there were some overachieving students who would wear a three-piece suit trying to impress their professors. Or he was some sort of admin, which was honestly worse than just any ol' professor. "Does it have something to do with that?" She makes a nod to the briefcase underneath his arm as she begins to haphazardly push aside and clear space in her messy workspace, whatever project that was in front of her swiftly forgotten in the face of potentially being able to procrastinate further. but they tore me apart like a hurricane.
