THE JUDGEMENT HERO

Mid-term staff changes were unusual things at universities—Hasani would know. He had become something of a professional student for several years in pursuit of multiple degrees simply for his ego and the fact he had the money and mind-reading abilities to do so with relative ease. Rather than subject himself to answering dozens of inquiry emails from the students over the sudden shift in class structure, syllabus, and his very presence, Hasani planned to address the entire student body of the Support Department at once. What better way to do so than through one of his new classes?

Think Tank.

A simple concept to break down barriers between the Support Department students by gathering them in one place to encourage networking and creativity through connection and competition. It just happened to also make it easier for Hasani to filch promising ideas right out of their little heads. If he could sift through their post-pubescent mess of hormones that alternated between stupid, anxious, and horny thoughts like someone channeling surfing through late night television.

Every student with a major that fell under the purview of the Support Department received their updated course list indicating when and where the first Think Tank class would be held. Come Friday morning, Hasani stood in the auditorium sized lecture hall waiting for students to arrive for roll call. Because of the large and ambitious nature of such a class, it blocked out the entire morning from the hours of 8am to noon. Hasani looked both alert and immaculate in one of his custom luxury suits despite the early hour—and the long vice filled night that had led up to it.

While reviewing her own class structure, as well as Ylva's, she found it curious that the support one had changed so drastically. Most notably she had a new class to look forward to. Think Tank. It wasn't awfully descriptive, but she could get a general idea of what to expect from the name alone. Interesting. With a new teacher in charge of the support department, forming a professional relationship with him would be paramount in her objective to making more of a splash in her second year, than she had in the entirety of her first year of mediocrity.

When the morning to attend the Think Tank arrived she was there early. She always made a point to be punctual, bringing pen and paper so she could take notes as the class progressed. ''Good morning.'' She bowed politely at the new teacher as she entered and took a seat near the front row. Her tone was stoic, her expression neutral as she carried herself with an air of seriousness. To a complete outsider she might come across as cold or unfriendly, but if Hasani got a glimpse of her mind he would know she didn't intend to come across that way. Masao was someone who had attempted to bury her feelings long ago, burdened by the pressure of having to inherit the family weapon manufacturing business. She was aloof, but not because she hated people, more so because it was her way of coping with her confusing upbringing and self-imposed sense of duty.

Curiosity might have killed the cat, but that didn’t stop Ana from allowing her own to lead her right to the first row of seats in the lecture hall where she took a seat front and center. Where had Professor Koizumi gone? Who was this man that took his position as head of the UAU Support Department? Why did they now have a class with every year of the Support majors present? How would even running a class like this work? When was it going to start?

These questions and more zipped around behind her too wide eyes which were locked onto Dr. Serna as Ana waited for class to start. Hopefully answers would follow and hopefully this man was as good as the rumors said. Ana hated having her time wasted by those inferior to her. Which she claimed was most everyone. Was that true? Only Ana and the one mind-reader present in the room knew.

[attr="class,"memoryDarkbody"]'A think tank?' Sumi had received the notification to the change of schedule the day prior while working. It wasn't a concept she was unfamiliar with as there were plenty of those happening at Tiamat and had been for years. Usually it involved a new director or higher up at that company so perhaps it was the same deal there? The following day she did ask around and learned that there was a new head of the support department. Not exactly the most surprising development since Professor Koizumi had vanished when the world needed him most, but still she hoped he was doing alright!

Apparently, they needed to wear colors or a uniform respective of their year, with the freshman being required to wear amethyst, so Sumi wore her normal uniform with an amethyst bow tie. She was sure that they'd got proper uniforms updated to the new curriculum soon! Entering the classroom early but still after both Masao and Ana she would stop and greet the teacher "Good Morning sensei!" she'd give a slight bow before taking a seat also near the front row, giving a small wave to both Ando and Borovsky. If Anubis read her thoughts from the moment she entered til now, all he would receive was confirmation that Sumi was the exact type of person to act on how she felt, just...not like Ana did. Internally, she remarked on how nice it was to see the upperclassmen here and how the new support head seemed nice. She was excited for the new opportunity!

The head of the support department got replaced? Their schedules changed? There's a new class now?

This was a lot for Kei to take in, especially in the middle of the semester. He had assignments you know! Projects he had to finish and tests he had to take! Are those just gonna be carried over to the new classes? How would this one stack up when it came to work? Maybe he should just stop panicking and get his butt to the lecture hall.

Which he did! Gold star for him. Several excuse me's, pardon me's and sorry's were thrown at every person Kei passed, making his way to the front row to ensure he would not miss anything of what was about to happen in his new curriculum. Anubis would pick up how his mind held the thoughts of the anxious variety, filled with the earlier questions and even more somehow.

He didn't have the guts to greet their supposed new superior so he just took his seat quietly, waving a hand at the familiar faces in Sumi and Ana with a quiet "Hey guys," before taking out his notebook and paper from his bag. He had a feeling he was gonna be writing a lot today.

Kei nearly flung his paper - paper? He was supposed to get a pen - in the air when he heard his name. He couldn't understand why he still got surprised. Ana never changed how she greeted him since they met.

"Hi Ana," the boy responded with a crooked smile, tucking the extra paper under his notebook before placing his pen next to it. "You ready for this course?" Then, in a quieter tone meant for only her to hear. "Because I'm not."

Ana stared at Kei, absolutely unblinking for several seconds. She didn’t even seem to be breathing. At least not until she took a breath to say, “If you aren’t ready for the course, then maybe you should-”

“Then maybe you should consider a different major, Hada-san,” Hasani said, finishing the sentence Ana had been in the middle of speaking aloud. He had been silent up until then, not just watching and visually evaluating each student, but skimming the thoughts from their forefronts of their minds in between each nod of greeting to those that had addressed him before finding their seats.

Kei wasn’t the only nervous one, but he had been coerced into speaking his worries out loud by someone less concerned than him and though he had been quiet in his admission, there was no escaping the net of Hasani’s telepathic sweep. Not that anyone knew that’s what had happened. For all they knew, he just had really good hearing.

“It’s my understanding that the Support Department program has been a little lax. At least by my standards. That will be changing from this moment on. I will not make choosing this major an easy path for any of you. It will challenge you and push you to limits you didn’t realize existed.”

He paused to let those words sink in. “I don’t do this because I’m a sadist.” That was somewhat of a lie. “Or for my own amusement.” That part was true. He did it for his success. Hasani walked around his desk and spread his arms out in a gesture to encompass the entire room.

“I promise it will be difficult because I want to help shape you into the finest inventors of your time.” He lowered his arms and fixed Kei in the crosshairs of his dark stare. “If that is something any of you don’t want, or something you don’t think you can handle, then there’s the door. I’ll file your transfer paperwork to whatever department you think will be easier. Which is all of them. Even the Hero students with their apocalyptic powers and even larger egos will be in awe of what each and every one of you are capable of by the time I’m done with you.” He freed Kei and shifted his gaze across the room to all of them individually for a second or two.

“So who is dedicated enough to stay and put in the work?”

Kei waited for the bright-eyed student's response, mildly perturbed by her stare despite how long he knew her. When a different voice entered his ears to finish her sentence though he jumped in his seat. He turned into the source, only to realize it was the department head himself who spoke.

Oh God, he heard him. Not the best first impression to have with the man who could expel you.

The junior kept his mouth shut as Anubis went on with his speech, making sure not to make any further complaints on the sudden changes made to their curriculum. He'd rather the man not pick up on that again. Especially when he singled Kei out with his stare, causing the student to sink in his seat as a result of the pressure. Was it weird to already assume more of this will happen in the future? When Hasani directed his focus to the class again, Kei let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. He was feeling light-headed all of a sudden.

The prospect of rising difficulty in their courses was scary. Things working differently from what they just got used to was scary. Kei felt for the freshmen especially at that. The thing was though, he liked to think he was okay at adapting. He's had to do that a lot over the years. Besides, he already failed once by moving away from his dream of becoming a hero. What was he gonna do, fail at becoming a gear manufacturer too? The voice at the back of his head said yeah but he decided to ignore it.

So Kei remained seated. He still looked small given he didn't shift from his sunk state but he didn't move to leave either. He wasn't planning to.

Hasani's comment against Kei seemed unusually cruel, perhaps a taste of what was to come for the support course in the near future? She remained seated and absorbed all the information he was giving them, silent the entire time until he was done when she finally stood up, her eyes only trained on the teacher with a mix of amusement and skepticism. ''With all due respect, sensei. Your vision for the support course sounds like a promising improvement. I look forward to seeing how you will put your plans into motion as I intend to stay and put in the work.'' Her response could have ended there, but she wasn't just there to say what Hasani wanted to hear.

''That being said. I believe your comment directed at Hada-senpai just now was unwarranted.'' She crossed her arms, remaining as deadpan as ever. ''Hada-senpai's words betray his level of expertise. It is hardly the case that he couldn't handle an increased workload given his track record. Therefore, I believe his comment was made in jest. Unprofessional? Perhaps, but in changing times such as these what is humor, if not just another tool to alleviate the tension? Is humor going to be absent from your courses, sensei?'' It was a weird question for someone like Masao to pose. She wasn't exactly a humorous person and as far as any other students knew she had never laughed at a joke. Still, her respect for Kei outweighed her need to fall in line, even if she was just bringing way more attention to the comment by speaking up.

Eventually she sat down again, letting Hasani reply, ignore her or to let another student speak.

[attr="class,"memoryDarkbody"]The feeling Sumi had wasn't nervousness even after their new sensei gave his speech. Was it excitement? Anticipation? Whatever it was she had hoped it was infectious only to be greeted with a more downtrodden Kei after being called out by the professor.

She may not have known Kei too well, but being classmates in the same discipline was good enough for her to help out! So, while Ando gave a speech, Sumi took a more subtle approach. She was proud of Ando for speaking up and would have done the same, albeit with less of a serious tone, if she hadn't said anything. She moved from her seat and plopped down right next to Kei, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry about it, Hada-san! You've shown everyone how hard you work and how good you are at this kind of stuff. I'm sure sensei will see your work speaks for itself!" she would give him a light pat and then rummage through her bag momentarily. She had started carrying around super sour candies (mainly due to Freja being a mess occasionally) and offered him one. "A sour candy qualifies as a distraction technique. The strong, sour flavor can help shift our brain's attention from feeling to thinking. It can distract from anxious feelings. Trust me, it's my discipline!" she would place it on his desk in front of him and began to take out her own supplies for the lesson "I've got tons of this stuff so please help yourself!" all in all she hoped that both Kei and Masao wouldn't get in too much hot water with this professor on the first day of his class.
