Oblivious Opening
Michael was exceptionally excited for all of the events happening at the Sports Festival. It was all rather overwhelming when sign ups began. In his over-excitement, Michael had not only agreed to help with several student ran booths, he had also signed up for several of the events for the festival without fully understanding what was happening in the events. This was how the large balloon-headed man ended up joining the Balloon Bonanza event. Michael had seen the name of the event and signed up without further insight.
It's called Balloon Bonanza, how could I NOT be a part of it?
Little did he know until backstage being explained the more detailed rules of the game did he realize just how much jeopardy he had actually put himself in. It wasn't a matter of feeling any kinship with the balloons in the competition, but there was a rather... twisted sense of self he could see in the targets. Seeing that the balloons were meant to be attacked felt awkward for a few reasons, the most prominent being that his head could be mistaken for a target. He actually considered painting his head green to avoid confusion...
So long as he didn't go floating up among the targets, there was a reasonable likelihood that he wouldn't be shot at, so Michael optimistically remained in the competition. He took his place at the starting line formulating his plan of attack.. on the floating targets that looked even more like his own head once seeing them in person. Michael tried not to think much about that and focus on a plan of attack. With his quirk not having a emission to assist with popping the balloons, he would just improvise. In each hand he wielded a simple sharp nail; with these he could stretch his arms out and pop any of the red balloons he could reach.
He stood at the starting line and positioned himself for the signal to begin. As soon as the buzzer sounded Michael began the slaughter. It was difficult to describe the awkward feeling Michael had towards popping balloon after balloon. Growing up it had been a rather dramatic fear of his to pop, so since the beginning of his training, he had focused on strengthening his own latex-like body. He couldn't afford to be fragile, so he did everything he could to build up and learn to manipulate the rubbery material of his body so now he could be as sturdy as a car tire. Even still, this kind of massacre against balloons was starting to give him pause...
Notes & Tags: TLDR: Michael joined the Balloon Bonanza not knowing what was happening in it. Michael struggles to put aside his apprehension for popping targets that look so much like his own head, but uses some construction nails and stretch his arms to pop as many as he can while he can stomach it.

Moving on to Phase 2
With the supposedly last person sent out the window for him to catch, Michael finally let out all the gas expanding his body. He wiggled loosely from the expulsion of air leaving him before painfully snapping back together. Being stretched out so significantly, for such an extended period, with person after person landing on him was quite the undertaking. His arms felt like wet cloths and his legs struggled to keep him standing. This was quite the exercise and might benefit him to practice more in the future to help build up his stamina, durability and flexibility. However he couldn't stop yet, they still had the rest of the building to clear.
It was at that moment that Michael noticed that Yoko was flagging him down, apparently there was still another evacuee left. It would have been possibly unbearable if Michael tried to inflate back out to full size again, his skin crawled in a painful shutter at just the thought. But this actually could be used to their benefit. Michael and Yoko had to meet back up to go over the next part of their rescue plan now that the top levels had been cleared. Michael would need a little more time before inflating himself back up at all, so he took a more rubber focused approach.
Michael began rushing towards the building, bounding and generating a striding bounce to spring himself up the side of the structure. Bouncing off the railing of the fire escape, Michael launched himself up to the window where Yoko and the last evacuee of that floor waited. "Don't worry, we've got you." Michael said brightly and comfortingly to the civilian as he lifted them onto his back.
"What's the plan now Oniki?" Michael asked his partner, trying to gauge what she thought. She had cleared those two floors so she would have better idea of how structurally sound the building felt and the general vibe of the evacuees. They had cleared the two hardest levels to get out, so from here things would continue to be dangerous and time was of the utmost concern, but they would have a little more leeway being closer to the ground.
Notes & Tags: Yanai Yoko TLDR: Michael caught everyone but deflated early when he saw the signal. When Yoko found one more person, Michael used it as a opportunity to regroup, bouncing up to her level and discuss their next course of action before he would carry the last person down to the ground.

Michael appears mostly normal except that his head is a bright red balloon. Even though he has no mouth, eyes or ear holes he does have a mouth, eyes and ears they are just hidden within the semipermeable latex of his balloon head. He can even eat non-solid foods and drinks through the latex. He can even manipulate the pores of latex enough to stretch to get thicker food stuffs to his mouth. The rest of his body is a tall toned male figure.
Michael dresses rather casually, going by comfort and accessibility. Because of his ability to inflate and deflate himself, he does try to often wear more stretchy clothing.

Michael’s father had a rubber-like mutation quirk and his mother had a gas manipulation emission quirk and their union resulted in Michael having a balloon mutation quirk. Michael grew up very privileged but he always was very caring and helpful for the less fortunate. He would use his power, influence and talents to help anyone that needed it. Fueling his passion for altruism, his parents sought to put him on track to be a hero, though Michael requested that he earn all of it himself, so that is what he sets out to do.[/div]

Ready and Bloated
Michael grunted out from the impact of the first evacuee landing on his inflated body. Being stretched out so much like this with gas had made the blunt force of people more dynamic than he normally felt from this kind of impact. To not bounce the people off of him when they hit, he had to allow for the gas inside him to be rapidly displaced to absorb their drop and disperse the energy to avoid them getting hurt. In doing so, Michael felt all of that instead. The first handful of people wasn't much but after about a dozen full body people slamming into him from a few floors up it was wearing him down.
But Michael couldn't give up, he had to endure every heavy impact that had to distort his inflated body. At least until Yoko had cleared those two floors. He had been training as hard as possible at UAU to do just this. Not be a crash pad per se, but to push himself past his limits in order to help people. And with Yoko as his partner, he felt all the more motivated to endure. She was so strong, even if she didn't seem to believe it herself. To push through all the emotions and fear that she had to strive to be a great hero... how could he not be inspired by her?
Keeping the mask of confidence was not only important for him, but he had to keep it for the comfort of the people they were rescuing. They had to be heroes and heroes shouldered all that pain and worry so that the people in real danger didn't need to. They were being trained to not only keep people safe but make them feel safe. Yoko was great at projecting that confidence with a fiery passion, particularly while in her Oniki persona. It made Michael strive all the harder to be strong while he was Samaritan.
Michael toughed it out and waited for Oniki to signal that the top two floors were clear.

Legal and Fair
Michael wasn't sure what had caused Gen's turn of personality, but it was not only a relief, it was refreshing! Michael had wondered if most of Gen's angst was likely results from people ignoring him and he felt he needed to act recklessly in order to be noticed. So it was very reassuring to see him not only cooperating but actively contributing with the exercise. Michael of course didn't pick up on any of the domineering subtext Gen was projecting, Michael just assumed it to be confidence and an ignited sense of compassion for the people they had to help. Whatever the reasoning, Michael sprinted by Gen's direction while carrying the three-eyed man on his back, not really feeling any of the awkward attempts that Gen was trying to make this uncomfortable. Michael had just assumed that Gen was just struggling to hang on.
Michael didn't let the simulated wreckage or Gen's comments slow him down, if anything, it drove him to move faster. In fairness he likely could move much quicker and easier without Gen chained to him, but these were the rules. "Why? The rules were we had to do this while cuffed together. We have to follow the rules." Michael didn't realize how frustrating that line of true blue boy scout logic could be, it was the rules and to Michael following the rules the biggest difference between a hero and villain. Villains were still people that made the wrong choices because they felt they had to, Michael wanted to be a hero that proved that by obeying the laws and helping people that they would come out on the better side.
"It doesn't matter if this isn't real or that breaking the rules would be easier. We need to prove that it can be done legally and fairly. We need to set the example because we're heroes. We save everyone, no matter how hard it is or if some people don't like it. We have to put them before ourselves." Michael said determinedly. "These people may not be in real danger, but if we don't give it our all, its risking the lives of anyone we try to save in the future. They deserve our best efforts. Now, where are they?"

Stacked Odds
Michael was doing some stretching as he pulled on his arms while he and Yoko entered the ring. Being practically all rubber and air, he wasn't needing to limber up his joint or muscles, but it did help stretch his latex-like body to be ready for much bigger inflations faster. "I don't know. These are all just for fun anyway, right?" Michael was not taking this competition very competitively. Especially with Yoko by his side, this felt more like a game than an exhibition. "Besides, think of how strong we are together. Perhaps these two are at our level together." Michael said optimistically.
Michael had faced off against Jun earlier in the year in a sparring match and despite how he had managed to hold his own against her then, he could only assume that she had gotten stronger as exponentially as he had. "I sparred against Kanjo-senpai earlier this year but I've never met the other guy before. I'm sure he's probably a very nice guy especially if he's teamed up with Kanjo-senpai." Michael said brightly.
This definitely would be an uphill battle, especially with Michael not directly attacking anyone. Even as a sparring match, Michael did not want to cause any pain, even though he had seen first hand how difficult that was to face against Jun. Still Michael was confident. He had his friend by his side, nothing was going to bring him down. He reached down and gently squeezed Yoko's hand supportively. "We got this. Together." Michael smiled down at his small friend.

Idealistic Injuries
Despite their good intentions, Mai's words were a bitter pill to swallow. Though Michael knew all too well the validity in what she was saying. His desire to help everyone shouldn't come at the expense of others. As he was now, sacrificing himself to avoid causing harm did nothing but create liabilities for everyone else. He wasn't strong enough yet to do things his way. This actually brought some relief to his aching body that this had been just a simulation. He needed to get stronger, significantly stronger in all regards if he wished to uphold his values.
Michael still didn't wish to cause pain, but there was deep points that Mai had stated. If he wanted to minimize pain, he would need to take the quickest path of resolution. It didn't mean he had to stop trying to reach out to the villain to find a peaceful outcome, but he couldn't rely on it. Until he was strong, smart, and capable enough to peacefully neutralize any threat before it could harm anyone else, he would need to engage physically.
Michael was thankful for the lesson Mai had given, "Thank you for the time and attention you have given me today." Michael said in his cheery way. "You've given me a lot to reflect upon." Michael was in no position to discredit or dismiss any of Mai's experiences, even if he still sought to be an exception to proven methods. He would take what she had taught him today to heart, but it wouldn't change his heart. If he had to fight back, let it be without malice. If he needed to take down a villain, let it be with compassion and care. Simulations like this and the Hostage Rescue seemed to be worse case scenarios... but how many villains were so driven for death and devastation? There had to be ways to reach people like this, and perhaps they would be more amiable once stripped of their leverages.
Michael had much to think through, but right now all that really kept his mind's attention was the pains on his body. His hands were still messed up pretty badly even after the rest of his body regained some normalcy. He kept a grip on the heating pads more as a way to keep their rather horrific state covered. He smiled at her, tilting his head enough to try to pantomime the obscured expression. He was glad he had come here today, even if he'd be leaving for the infirmary as he returned home. Unlike peers in his classes that held a more vicious stance on violence against criminals, Michael understood Mai's stance was still one out of compassion, at least that's how he chose to see it. So even if he still sought to find another way, it was nice to know someone like her was out there. There needed to be more heroes like her out there and it was good that she started an agency with that in mind.
Michael took one final piece of her advice personally. There had been flaws in how he went about these tests, but something that stood out to him was how much he did try to carry on his own shoulders. In seeking to find peaceful resolution he had depended on himself to bare far more of the load than he was ready for. He needed to seek out teamwork, not just a group of individuals but a proper team of heroes cooperating and functioning as a unit. If he wanted to cover the weak points in methods and still find a peaceful end to a conflict. Not every team would obviously be as open to his way of dealing with villains, but if they all could compromise, then perhaps there would be cohesion enough. This way Michael would never have to fight alone.
Michael stood up and rolled his stiff shoulders slowly. "I need to get back to the campus. Thank you again for this, I learned a lot." Michael said brightly, projecting far more bounce back than his body was fully ready to show.

Damaged but not Defeated
Michael’s whole body stung as Mai froze him more and more, but it was her words that cut the deepest. Michael had actually shrunk as his rubber tightened and the gas in his body condensed. With him forcing out as much gas as he could from his hands his body began to crumple in on itself like an aluminum can. His head was the most showing as his normally full smooth head had shrunk enough to actually compress around his head within, showing a perfect outline of his skull. Even though his skeletal system was also rubbery, the cold was mostly affecting the his most outer layer. His skin was so brittle he could feel it beginning to splinter and crack from the cold conditions he was enduring to freeze his gas. Michael was in physical agony and it was likely for nothing…
Her words might just be over dramatized for the portrayal, but there was a bitter and brutal truth behind them. All of this… all he was enduring… just because he didn’t feel comfortable in taking the easy route. In fighting Mai rather than everything he did, there was the likelihood that he could have stopped the bomb before it got to this point. Was his compassion truly that much of a weakness? Creative as his plan was, it was also dangerous not only for himself, there was also no guarantee that it would be enough. The pain his body felt was nothing compared to the fear of failing people like this out in the field. This was just a simulation, but would he really risk other peoples’ lives just because he didn’t want to cause pain? Even now, despite the pain his body was experiencing and fear of failure, Michael was still determined to not give up on his desire for peaceful resolution. He knew that there would likely be situations where combat would be the only realistic solution, but he was determined to be strong and versatile enough to avoid that outcome. Violence should always be a last resort, otherwise how can he expect to show people his conviction to peace and empathy. Still, to hear a pro hero speak so harshly about his morality, even as just part of an exercise… it hurt.
As Mai withdrew the application of her quirk, Michael felt a hollow relief. This had only proved just how weak Michael was. If he wished to uphold his ideals, his body needed to be able to match his convictions, otherwise he was just determined to sacrifice himself out there. His death wouldn’t help anyone, especially to die so needlessly. It was only natural to defend yourself for your own self-preservation… but he was seeking to be a hero that helped everyone, that gave his all to save anyone. It wasn’t that his life mattered less, but that his dream of peace was worth dying for. If this had been a real situation, he would have died because he didn’t fight back. It didn’t matter how determined he was, he stopped one bomb at the cost of his own life… Perhaps it was true… so many of his peers and influences seemed to believe that physically overwhelming someone was the most reasonable course when dealing with a villain. Even with all his progress since coming to UAU, Michael was still too weak to disprove them.
Michael didn’t speak as his body recovered from the cold slowly. He was in such a poor state he couldn’t even try to move his hands yet in fear of worse damage than large gashes that had formed on his palms from stretching open his pores to pump out the cold air to the bomb. Even after the color and elasticity began to return to his body he was going to need to seek medical treatment for his hands. Michael’s usual sunny disposition had shrunk to a solemn silence as he ran all of it through his head again and again. Once enough warmth had returned to his body, he was able to inflate himself enough to be back to normal size and appearance, aside from his hands which were sealed shut with dozens vinyl patches like bandages until he could see a healer.
Mai must have known how much this had taken out of him, physically, emotionally and morally as she asked if he was okay. He looked down at his bandaged hands, they almost seemed to be mocking his stubborn views as the highlighter how much he went through just to keep from fighting. He finally looked up at the professional hero. “I’ll be fine… thank you.” He said politely, unsure how to branch his question. He mulled it over for a few seconds before finally asking Mai. “If you were in this situation, in my position: What would you have done?”
Michael didn’t believe he was wrong in thinking that even villains deserved the chance to be saved or that if he was strong enough that he would be able to solve nearly any conflict peacefully. So aside from getting stronger, Michael wanted more insight. He wanted to hear her suggestions, to learn from her experience. Perhaps she could teach him ways that he hadn’t thought of. There had to be other ways than punching his problems away. Even after all of this, Michael kept to his pacifistic viewpoint and only wanted to use this failure as a learning experience; gain more perspective of his options from someone that had really lived these kind of situations.

Ride to Glory
Michael hated how accurate Gen’s statement was. Michael hadn’t thought of how he would locate any of the people in need of rescue. He had been fully prepared to just charge in a burst open door after door while he looked for people. Before Michael could ask what he suggested then, Gen activated his quirk. Michael was rather astonished by the graphic display, after all he only knew the limited scope of Gen from the Armor Wars exposition. It was actually rather fascinating to see his third eye open; they both had mutation style quirk, a class of quirk that Michael knew all too well carried a stigma. Despite the versatility and fluidity that most mutant quirks had they usually came with a freakish connotation. It was an unfair bias against those that looked different and that kind of ostracization was likely a leading cause of so many mutants seemingly becoming villains. Perhaps this was why Gen acted the way he did, it was a defense mechanism from years of bigotry.
Michael beamed in awe at what Gen’s quirk was able to do. Being able to lock onto the people that they needed to help from just a stare was remarkable and exceptionally useful. Hearing that the building he pointed out was already structurally compromised, Michael was ready to spring into action. “Roger! Let’s go!” Michael started charging for the building only to be tugged back on as he couldn’t run at full speed with Gen. This would likely be a problem as every moment counter. Michael bent down slightly. “Get on my back, you can point me in the direction and we’ll clear out the building in no time.” Michael said seriously.
Michael was concerned he’d have to pick up Gen and fireman carry him if he was obstinate about Michael carrying him piggyback. It was the fastest way for them to move together and gave Michael clear vision of where Gen would guide him. If they worked together they would actually make a fantastic team, but Gen would need to get over working with Michael and Michael would need to think more before he acted.

You’re Doing Great
Michael smiled imperceptibly behind his bright red latex head as the young woman took his hand. Michael gently helped lift her back to her feet, keeping a light hold of her hand while having his other held aloft behind her incase she fell again. While she didn’t appear to be injured, she was rather dirty from her apparent accidents at the cafe and now dust that wafted through the alleyway. “I have some free time before I’m needed to participate in a few things.” Michael assured her, right now, making sure she was okay was all that mattered.
“Quirks can be rather difficult to deal with, so I can only imagine how hard you’re having adjusting to something so new just as you are becoming an adult.” Michael ran his hand against his balloon head as if stroking through imaginary hair. “I was born with the rubbery aspect but being able to manipulate the gas inside me came later and being able to manipulate the rubber came even later then that. Each time felt so foreign, like I was using something that didn’t belong to me. It was terrifying to not feel like I could even trust my own body. But with hard work and support from my friends and family, I found out it was all me to begin with.”
Michael beamed warmly down to her, his body language having to charades his comforting smile. “You’re doing a great job.” Michael gave her hand he was holding a tender squeeze. His words were confident and sincere. They weren’t being said out of pity or just to make her feel better, Michael spoke with a genuine demeanor as what he said was unwavering fact. “You’re going through something brand new and you deserve so much credit for not only seeking to get better with your quirk but want to use it to become a hero. That’s amazing, but you don’t need to figure it out all at once. We can figure it out together.” While Michael’s words could make it seem like a more general ‘we’, like the school as a whole, he was fully willing to assist her himself.
“In the meantime, let’s enjoy ourselves a little. It is a festival after all. How about we grab some food and do a couple games before we head back to the cafe. I’ve got a shift there myself in a couple hours, so maybe we can work together. I feel kind of silly in the uniform; it doesn’t feel like it suits me very well. My head kind of takes away from the fancy clothes.” Michael chuckled softly. It was only now that Michael really had taken notice of her own uniform still being clung to by dust and stains from her accident. Even so it looked lovely on her, much more suited for such a cute outfit than he felt he was. “Are you feeling hungry at all? I saw a row of booths on the way over here with some delicious looking menus. My treat.”
Michael spent the rest of the day escorting Yunagi around the festival taking the time to cheer her up and help her have a good time. They played some games together and got a bit of food before they headed back to the cafe. Dressed like a right proper gentleman to match his friendly and welcoming demeanor, Michael not only did his job well but went out of his way to make sure that Yunagi had the support and assistance she needed to do her duties. He showed her shortcuts and tips her learned and helped her keep calm and balanced. All in all, it was a rather great day and Michael felt like he made a friend in the process.

Slowed by Politeness
Michael was feeling rather anxious about the whole event. He knew just how important matches like this was for showcasing themselves for prospective agencies but Michael still wasn’t sure if fighting was going to be the best way to advertise himself. He was decently strong and capable in a fight and when it came to a spar like this essentially was he at least felt a little better with the idea of combat. Being a pacifist in a heroic world was already difficult. Michael believed that so many of the villains that were out there needed to be saved from the decisions that circumstance forced them to make and punching them into submission was not the way to help them. So Michael’s ‘fighting’ style had focused more on defense and subduing his opponent.
Michael was thankful that his partner for this particular match up was Masao Ando, Paragon. He had met her through the Hostage Rescue Scenario. She was incredible. So powerful and confident but still she had accommodated Michael’s desire to not cause any harm against the villain portraying actors. Even if they had been genuinely villains, Michael would have preferred a peaceful solution and Paragon had done her best to do just that while running diversion for Michael to break out the hostages. Michael understood how difficult a request like that was especially during a scenario like that, but Masao-senpai proved that they were strong enough to meet such a condition. This is why when asked to be part of her team for a 2v2 combat for the Sports Festival, Michael agreed. He wanted to follow her example and be strong enough to be what she needed for this situation.
Michael knew he still likely wouldn’t be able to directly fight but he could run defense and support for Masao-senpai. Also with the condition of knocking the opponent out of the ring as a method of defeat, Michael felt this would be the most effective and least painful way to win their fight. Since this was Paragon’s area of expertise, Michael would defer to her plans on what to do in the match and back her up however she saw fit. He was ready to do what he could to help her.
That readiness staled slightly when he saw who they would be competing against. Michael had only seen Kei as a hostage stand-in during the HRS exercise, so he did not have much insight on who they were and what they could do. But Ylva was a different situation. Ylva had been on the capture team with Michael during the Hostage Rescue Scenario and to put it bluntly she was rather terrifying. Cold, calculating, precise and brutal, Riis-senpai had charged in for the fight against the pseudo-villain Scylla trying to do serious damage with their quirk right from the beginning. No unnecessary chatter, no backup required, just her icy quirk threatening to take down the target one way or another. Despite her chilling performance, Michael couldn’t help but admire how (no pun intended) cool she was. Michael didn’t agree with her methods but she had still proven how effective she was in what she did. In a disturbing way, it could be seen her frightening methods could be seen in the same light as Michael’s tactics, so long as she was attempting quick and devastating attacks in order to cause the least amount of damage with a fast take down. She, like all the others in this bout, was an upperclassman so Michael felt an air of inexperience in comparison to them.
Being the in the lowest class beneath the others made Michael seek to prove himself all the more, especially with Masao-senpai having him for her teammate. He wouldn’t compromise his morals for this match but knew that Paragon wouldn’t expect that of him. So now it was a matter standing his ground against Ylva’s cold quirk and whatever Kei would throw at them. Michael knew Yvla’s quirk was a particular concern when matched with his own. Michael relied on gas flow through his rubber like body, and as certain temperature ranges that proved difficult. In freezing temperatures his rubber body would contract and become brittle the colder it got and his gas was forced to condense and was harder to produce and manipulate. Michael would need to work extra hard to function around her abilities, so hopefully Paragon would be able to handle her while he focused on backing her up as she needed.
