One by one, society's victims took a shot of the miracle substance. A burning sensation flooded their veins, popping nerves with a surge of pain, but when it settled, their quirks were amplified by magnitudes only matched by their sudden bloodlust.
"Right. Yes. Yes. Yes. I feel it. I feel it flowing in me. This is how we do it. This is how we reclaim what is ours!" One of the men shouted at the edge of the lot.
A column of smoke rose from his hand. What was once a small ignition quirk, only generating just enough heat to light a cigarette, now melted metal and stone in a searing flash of fire. Another fella's fingers grew into blades while spikes protruded from his shoulders and back. With the swipe of his hand he diced a garbage dump to slivers of metal scraps. He smiled with two rows of fangs. One woman's arm mutated. She used to grow lengths of rope from her palms; now, her entire arm was a massive tendril oozing a viscous liquid. A few drops fell to the ground, searing concrete.
Not everyone bought into the man's madness, though. Desperation may have been plentiful, but the insanity behind this false solution's mask was apparent to them. They wanted a fair shot at life, not to hurt others. Misery was in abundance these days. Why cause it to proliferate? No, these sane few retreated periphery of the lot.
"Whatever this is, I want no part of it," one woman said.
"Excuse us, pardon, excuse," a friend of hers said, trying to cut through the crowd, a few others following behind.
"Oh, I apologize, but that cannot be allowed," the head honcho called out. "All arrivals must partake. Those were the terms. Again, I apologize if there was any misunderstanding. We can't just show off the merchandise and risk having the whole endeavor put to rest. Besides, why wouldn't you want to partake in the grand revolution? Would you truly abandon your brothers and sisters?"
Fear struck the small group as the others surrounded them, those that had already taken the new quirk-amplifying drug. The craze was clear in their eyes. Perhaps some sanity remained, though? Maybe they could talk their way out?
"Please. We don't want to cause any trouble," the man started.
"Yeah, we'll just be on our way. Won't say a word to anyone," the sane woman continued.
"That simply will not do. If you don't have it in you to take action, well, we'll just have to keep you quiet for now."
How quickly the small groups' friends were to turn on them. All they wanted was to leave, and now death had come knocking. This wasn't right. They never should have come. The signs were there, but they just wanted a chance. They didn't know this was the "hope" being offered. But the crazies had them surrounded now. Just like that, they were going to die.
"Now that dun' seem nice," Farrin shouted from the entrance of the fenced gateway surrounding the lot. He didn't see Peacekeeper among the crowd and was greatly outnumbered. Dozens to one by the look of it. But what was he to do? He was a hero, well a student still but well on his way to herodom. And a hero didn't let people get hurt.
"Why dun' the lot o' yuh' pick on someone yer' own size," he taunted, eyeing the crowd. Then they all charged.

Society had rejected these poor folk often enough. They had little patience for yet another false promise. How many lies had they been fed? Opportunities. Housing. Care. They were chipped away at, piece by piece until their trust was entirely eroded. And yet, here they were. One more hope. One more chance. The human spirit was not quick to quit. Faith, however, could be misplaced.
"Okay folks, I think that's that. I know a scam when I smell one, and this-"
"Not yet," one voice shouted over the man and all the rest.
A swirl of haze formed at the head of the crowd. It cycled in and around itself, spinning faster and faster, gathering, then took on a human shape. The haze solidified, and there he was. A pale fellow clad in blues and white with equally bright trimmings. A smile stretched across his lips.
"For far too long have you and your ilk suffered. No longer. For I offer you all a gift. Reprisal. Reprisal through strength, strength to take what's rightfully yours."
A few heads turned his way, but towards the back of the group, the older fellow who was about to leave still wore suspicion. A single eyebrow was raised in question.
"Really? And you're just going to give us this gift for free? Nothing expected in return?"
"Naught but your time. And time you have already given. I made you wait. Now come, stand before me and receive your due reward," the man shouted, latching onto a briefcase set behind him and drawing it forward.
One by one, each of the crowd stepped forward. Inside the case were dozens of syringes. Many were comfortable with needles, a few others less so. None were ready for what was to come.
"Just one little pinch, and all the power you could ever want will be yours," he offered one last time with a smile.
Meanwhile, still a few blocks away, Farrin wandered the streets. Desolation and quiet were his only companions. That was until a resounding boom shook his surroundings. Already, the damage had been done. Something was happening. Something dangerous. That's what Farrin was hoping for, at least. Then again, how often did the young time-turner venture beyond UAU's walls without laying his life on the line in one form or another? Even his "practice patrols" had a way of going awry and fretting with peril. Though, it would be a lie to say he didn't often go looking for trouble. Whether by his bending of the rules or random chance, he found trouble, and trouble found him.
Let's hope today doesn't follow the pattern. Farrin's boots are firmly planted on the edge of one of Tokyo's many spires, stabbing at the clear skies. It was a large building with a nice view of the city below. The perfect perch for a short break. He and Kenta had been bumbling about their route for nearly three hours. All quiet so far. Families were skittering through the streets, cars buzzing to and from work. Things were going well.
"Let's take a breather," Farrin offered, kneeling into a seating position, his legs dangling freely over the building's edge.
A protruding ledge sat two levels below them, then another ledge a few levels further. If they needed to descend quickly to respond to trouble, that would work until they were level with a residential building across the street- from there, they could leap onto that building's fire escape and make their way down. Hopefully, that wouldn't be necessary.
"E'erythin's quiet so far," he chirped, "think we may jus' have ourselves a delightfully uneventful patrol this time 'round."

Only the occasional clink of discarded bottles and the rustling of leaves occupied the airways. A few lost souls bumbled about, skittering into alleyways or abandoned buildings. The selection was plentiful. It was the morose march of the broken, beaten, and damned. Farrin lived amongst their ranks many years ago. Not those that called San'ya home, but back in New York, he slept under many a bridge with only his fellow forgotten to keep company.
Farrin dropped off the building edge, then summoned a field of temporal deceleration about one foot in diameter. It slowed the air itself to a point of near-stasis. Molecules and matter slowed to such degrees took on the properties of a solid. Since the effect lasted for a few seconds after the field dissipated, he could effectively use these spaces as steps to descend to ground level without actually slowing himself down. When he reached the streets below, it was a familiar sight. Drunkards and the vagrant watching from their windows for the world to make a move. Any move. Any opportunity that they might benefit from. And who could blame them? Unfortunately, there wasn't a society among all the world that didn't benefit some at the cost of others. For there to be "winners," there had to be "losers." It wasn't right, but Farrin could only hope to tackle these plights once he garnered enough influence as a successful her to do so. For now, he was left to helping those individuals he could namely, by tracking the source of this new quirk drug. And so he wandered the streets.
Meanwhile, some distance away, the time-turner's senses would prove correct. In an abandoned parking lot dotted with garbage cans alit with warmth, a few of the desperate had gathered. Word got out, word of one such opportunity, one that would empower the neglected, the broken, the forgotten. So, the most desperate and depraved gathered, as they were told. Someone would soon reveal themselves to the gathering. A Messiah. A savior that would deliver them means to take back what was theirs. Their lives.
"This is the place, right?" One of the vagrants asked.
"Take a look around. This many of us? No way that many got it wrong."
"Could be a trick. Just one more scheme we've been conned into."
"You got a date or something? You want to go, then go. I'm waiting. Whoever it is, whatever it is, it has to come through. I've had enough of living like this. No more."

Instantly, his good arm swung around and latched onto his not-so-good arm. There he lay, staring up at the ceiling. That was until the cymbals rang out again. Farrin sat up, his good arm rose, ready for another round, but this time, the monkey was tiny and in the professor's hand. Then, he dropped back.
"Eh, I'm gonna sit 'ere, but I'm standin' wit' yuh all in spirit," he said, fist bumping the air above him.
More challenging trials were welcome as long as he had his quirk. Without it, well, his legs were just too tired and torn to move with haste. It was like existing in the quintessential opposite of his regular, speedy self. Shackled by the laws of physics? No thanks.
There was a question gnawing at the inner workings of his mind. It floated, inflated to massive size, blotting out the currents of other such thoughts. And if the stench of bloody iron and alcohol and urine was strong during the day, it was a blitzkrieg nightmare after sunset. The miasmic stench was pregnant in the air and reached even the ward's rooftops. Farrin stood atop one such roof. One hand covered his nose. The other was set on his knee while in a crouch.
An odd string of encounters drew his attention to old San'ya. Two instances where otherwise typical, if overworked, civilians became rampant terrors causing all sorts of danger to those around them. Farrin wrote off the first of these peculiarities as an anomaly, but after finding the fractured shards of a vial fall from one of the crooks after the second encounter, well, a pattern was emerging.
Maybe he losing his mind, stringing together thumbtack nodes across a board built entirely by a waning psyche, but maybe not. Psychology of Villainy. It was a class Farrin dialed into each and every week. The desperate and downtrodden made for the easiest targets for the deeper dark. They were the perfect pawns in machinations, not their own. So, Farrin went where the largest concentration of such targets lived.
San'ya was a ghetto centuries old now. The ward had been divvied up and renamed in an effort to "rebrand" the locale, but every such measure was met with failure. If there was a god, they seemed to take pleasure in pissing on the people of San'ya, without even the courtesy of calling it rain. Rundown didn't begin to describe it. Neglect was a paint most thick throughout the neighborhood. The unemployed and unfortunates of society. Turned away and shot down at every instance. They holed up in abandoned buildings and lots. Slept in alleyways when necessary. Usually, this was a route for more practiced heroes, rarely students, but the time-turner had a case to build. And he knew this was the place to do it. So, he watched, leaping from one roof to another when necessary, eyeing the plentiful shadows of night, and waited for a sign.

Farrin hadn't seen Josephine lure her pursuers around the corner, but the din of combat and a distinct scream were quick to draw his attention. He nudged his boot against the fallen bot at his side. It elicited no response. So, that was that. He could move on now.
There was no time to waste. The air cracked as Farrin started down the street and around the corner. This time, he was met with the scene of sparks of heavy metal. Bulky machines collapsed, partially obscuring Josephine. She wasn't caught directly below as Farrin had been a moment ago or as she had been after the last battle, but it was clear the two villain machines nearly had her. She was tattered and down but breathing.
"No' bad," he said a whistle, looking the bots over.
Heads smashed together, and matching craters burrowed through their chests. How on earth had she mustered the strength? Everyone had a beast caged inside, but he had yet to see Josephine's unleashed. Well, as far as he knew.
"Who's the one abusin' the bots now?" He asked, jokingly.
Farrin knelt beside one of the bots, took hold of its underside, and lifted it, giving Jo some wiggle room to get out from underneath again. With that, the practice simulation was over. Farrin looked to his friend once she was on her feet. "Come on then, let's go grab somethin ta' eat. Yer gonna have ta' tell me how yuh' managed ta' take these two out. That's some good work yuh' did."

Given Josephine's budding combat experience, Farrin really had tailored the challenge so that he could rip through the bulk of the battle bots and then turn to analyze the way his friend held her own. Both ready to give pointers after the fight or come to help her if necessary. He hadn't had the opportunity with the first wave. Hopefully, things would be different this time.
Space and time parted with the wind as Farrin slipped between the laws of physics and into a temporal field that was his own. He crossed more space in less time and slammed into the machine on the right. Force bundled up and blew ahead, knocking the bot backwards, off balance. Its twin tails swung wide, missing Farrin by miles. Even a machine mind required some fraction of a second to adjust to new parameters. These basic bots weren't acting on prior knowledge, so it couldn't have known Farrin would move that fast.
With the machine reeling, Farrin leaped up and snatched both tails out of the air. His feet landed hard on the concrete, then he tugged, drawing the robot backward. The time-turner spun into a roundhouse kick that tore both machine's tails off. With its rear defenses in ruins, he sprinted into a slide and threw his fist up from below, piercing the belly of the mechanical beast.
Immediately, the machine collapsed. This time, it was Farrin who was pinned. "Feckin hell, yuh' gota be kiddin' me," he swore, pushing it up and over. He could handle the weight, but his view of Josephine was blocked. How could he give her input if he didn't see anything? Even a few seconds of the fight could be critical. Still, a breath later, he shoved the bot fully to the side and picked himself up, rounding its remains to check on Jo.

A time-turning Farrin that could potentially walk among the threads of time and land where he wished. The reality was far less quixotic. Farrin could only ever watch events unfold. He stood behind a barred window, one with a view into infinity, doomed only ever to witness its beauty and terror, never to partake in it. Well, at least not outside his own time. These feats of time sight, made possible by Temporal Resonance, weren't entirely under his control either. More often than not, Farrin wandered through the possibilities and events of time in his sleep while sifting. And, usually, he was forced to play witness to the world's many miseries. Both those he suffered and those which he delivered.
He wasn't about to trauma dump to a stranger. Farrin despised his weaker facets and rarely spoke of them, even with his most trusted friends and loved ones. He had only just met Meika. So, he opted to let her believe what she would. Who was he to rob her of her dreams?
"Maybe I can, maybe I can't, yuh'll jus' have ta' find out in time," he answered with a playful smirk.
Yeah, okay, it would be cool to ride a dinosaur. Imagine being strapped up top to a brontosaurus or some shite? Wild. But he was no time traveler. He could alter time's passage to a degree and witness events through the temporal fabric. It was an extremely powerful quirk for certain, but he was no wandering time god.
"I mean, how could yuh' expect ta' e'er take on villainy without knowin' that the mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell?" he joked.
Farrin's grades were aces among the hero courses. In academics, he usually hovered around a B grade. Not bad, but not the best either. He could sympathize with Meika's plight to some extent. Heroes couldn't be morons, but there were so few among his peers when he arrived that even knew how to throw a proper punch. Farrin had to challenge the school's hero professors to sparring matches in his first month because so few students could keep up with him. Granted, he had the advantage of attending a Hero Prep school in place of a typical high school. Still, handling yourself in a scrap was the utmost basics. How did so many not know how to brawl?
"Bein' straight wit' yuh, I think it's important we know some basic academics. Never know what chemical mixes we might be playin' wit' or how what history we might need ta' recall n' such. But, I certainly wish there were even more hero sims in me' first year. More sparrin, more n' more o' what we'll be seein' in the field," he offered.

Still, he was acclimating. Up and down, up and down, up and down, the constant upward jerks and sudden drops were losing their grip on his gut. When he heard Josephine's words, he possessed faculties enough to comply. So he threw his hands out.
He may have even enjoyed it a little, the slightest smirk crossing his face. It only lasted for a nanosecond or so. Ninety-nine percent of the lad still disliked submitting his movement to another force, but that last one percent existed.
Finally, the ride came to an end, slowly letting the passengers down. The braces unlocked, and the staff lifted the locks up over each group of riders. Farrin nearly fell out of his seat, but he caught himself. He patted himself down immediately. Yup, everything was where it was supposed to be.
"Think we're gonna have ta' put off food fer a bit," he said, turning to Josephine.
He was a little green in the face, and that wasn't due to his Irish heritage. Nope, Farrin was liable to vomit if he was jostled about anymore. Stillness slowly settled him, though, and the feeling receded. Good. That would have been embarrassing.
"Alright, uh, what next?" He asked, crossing every finger in his mind's eye that whatever cruel fate awaited him was less shaky than the damn tower. Josephine had said it was best to start with the worst ride in that regard, so even a rollercoaster would be a step down in vomit-inducing movement, right? Either way, it was clear more rides lay ahead. Then, hopefully, some more simple games and when his stomach was up for it... food.
