More sophisticated machines might have been equipped with motion sensors of some sort and detected his movement, but the realistic reactions of the villain bots actually spoke to the quality of the simulation. They were designed to act like typical human thugs. Their awareness fit the profile perfectly.
Overconfidence was, however, always one of Farrin's weaknesses. The time-turner knew he was advanced, even among his peers at UAU. He had faced Leonid in a one-on-one spar his very first week of classes and almost toppled the beast. A few years of Hero Prep and training with the heroes at Above & Beyond agency left him more capable than many of his classmates. Couple that training with a killer quirk in chronokinesis and, despite his typical discipline, even he slipped up.
A pop rang across the rooftop. There was no temporal warning this time around. Another weakness of his. He had become a little too reliant on time warning him of incoming danger. This time it hadn't. Heat shot up his back as a stun round slapped into his upper hip. Then, numbness followed. Accompanying the second shot was a flare at the back of his brain. Now time was stepping in.
Farrin lunged rightward into a roll, then sprung up onto his feet. Two robots on the building across from him. They were starting to send patrols up onto the building tops. The bots below undoubtedly heard the fire. Word was about to get out. His position would be compromised. Sprinting across the roof, Farrin leaped into the air, and crashed straight into one of the bots before it could react. To him, the world was still crawling.
Farrin threw his elbow into the down bot's arm, then its head, disabling it. Again, they were built to simulate human targets. He would have just rendered the thug unconscious. One more bot to go, then he had to move. Stealth was no longer an option. They had to find the bomb asap.

Farrin would have inquired if she based the HUD layout off of anything in particular, but it was best they keep on mission for now. So, his eyes scanned over the building sides in search of the snake symbol.
"Yeah. Pros n' cons o' chronokinesis. Time pitchin' me these warnin's n' such can be a lifesaver, but doesn't really hold up well in official capacities. Other people can't see what I'm seein', n' even then there's always the chance I'm not seein' somethin' from our time per se'."
Yeah, visions via temporal sight wouldn't hold up in court... or likely the school. Farrin wasn't going to involve authorities or UAU until he had something more concrete to offer that might see these villains apprehended sooner than later. Looking up and down the street, along the buildings, he wasn't seeing any activity. Or the symbol.
"This is pretty neat," he commented on the use of Miroru's quirk. "yer quirk really is quite flexible."
Dark zones, heat tracking, the list would have gone on, but passing the alley he used to ascend to the rooftops last time he was here, he found it. Sprayed at the corner of the building just before the bend into the alleyway. A snake looping around and eating its own tail. It wasn't an unknown variable. There were examples of such symbols dating as far back as ancient Egypt. But, for some reason, he was seeing it in his sifting dreams, and that meant its use was important. Connected to these villains he was running into. So, he approached, running his hand along the snake.
"This is it. I keep seein' it in me' dreams. Always associated wit' the feckers that've been huntin' me. It has to mean somethin'."

Lone Wolf's apparent preference for ranged encounters might convey a lack of close-range strength, which is where Farrin truly shined, but this wasn't like the time-turner's bout with Leonid. As advanced as he was, Farrin had been using his quirk for a while now and the journey wasn't over yet. Even if he did make it to Lone Wold, would he be in any condition to apprehend him? Even if his assumption proved correct, Lone Wolf was a UAU professor. He had experience, and certainly some form of close-range capabilities.
Farrin put a pause on the thought as he turned one final alleyway to the sight of the two other students standing at the base of the tower. He had crossed the distance. Now he just had to get inside, press past whatever traps lay within, and then take on one of UAU's pro-hero educators. No problem...
The freshman student inched his way ahead. A few scorch marks and other explosive residue like shattered metal bits and wiring lay strewn through the street. The other two students had set off a few explosives closing in, which meant the way was mostly cleared. So, Farrin relied on his temporal senses to warn him of any danger. This close to the building, Lone Wolf would have to be leaning out a window, looking almost straight down to take his shot, so it was likely safe to approach. When he closed in toward the building entrance, he took a knee beside the two other students.
"Oi," he started in a hushed tone, "either o' yuh have any idea what tricks might be waitin' fer us inside?"
They weren't freshmen, so these two might have more experience with the professor than Farrin. Experience they could collectively pool and hopefully take some educated guesses from. It was the one thing Farrin was missing. Raw experience.

Blood continued to trickle down his leg, and the rest of him had been put through the wringer. His arms trembled, not from fear but from raw damage. The gator's tail was nearly as tall as Farrin, and he had taken a direct hit. Pushing up off his knees, the time-turner just managed to stand his height.
"I'll live," he spat back in reply to Freja. "How bout' yerself, yuh still in fightin shape?"
His question was met with Freja scaling a tree. Her condition couldn't be too bad if she was monkeying about the battlefield. He wasn't quite sure what she had in store, but the logic needed no explaining. She had a plan and he was the bait. Sensible enough given the gator's attention had mostly been locked on him. She may have been this spider's target, but Farrin was basically the bodyguard now.
When the gator reared his head, it was all Farrin could do to backpedal out of the way of the monster's bite. He stumbled back one step, then leaped back another two, grimacing as his wounded leg flared up. A line smacked into the ground a few feet away though, and he saw across the clearing that Freja was flying! Well, basically flying, and into a dropkick that cracked hard against the gator's head. Farrin followed up with the opening she laid out. He darted forward. Even hobbling forward on one leg he was faster than most. With all he could muster, he balled up his right fist and thrust it into the gator's gut. A double whammy!
The gator immediately retreated to the safety of his unground protection. This fazing ability was a real pain in the ass, but this round was a clear win on the students' part. "Nice one," he coughed up. The gator still had more fight in him though. "How dare you!" He shouted, fazing partially through the ground, his open maw now snapping once, twice, a third time before he leaped into the air, aiming down toward the two students, threatening to snap his jaws down on the both of them.
"Move!" Farrin shouted, pushing Freja one way and diving the other, only just avoiding the gator who fazed back into the ground. Pushing Freja in the opposite direction wasn't a random act though. They needed distance between them again. To repeat their most proven tactic. One student plays bait, the other lays on the pain.

Farrin lacked the tenure to say with certainty that he was the absolute best in the heroics department. Only a few weeks, growing over a month now had gone by since his arrival. Yet, so far, few of his peers had impressed. Even the second years he was exposed among his hero course classmates hadn't stood out all that much. Between them, Leonid had admitted he saw something special in the time-turner, he had the hero professor up against the ropes in a spar during the very first week of class. Still, there were third-years and seniors still to meet. So, for now, he would hold off on declaring himself the best of his department.
"Well that's good ta' hear because I'm lookin' fer the best wit' this little project," he replied, following Ana into the room.
Trailing the second-year student back into the lab, Farrin scanned the room over, making sure it was safe to breathe. Presumably, she wouldn't have led him in otherwise, but it had been a toxic environment just a few minutes ago. Luckily, it appeared the place was safely sterilized now. Well, he hoped it was.
"Eh, sure. As long as yuh'll perform maintenance when needed. If yuh' dun want anyone else knowin' what's goin' on under the hood, that means I'll be relyin' on you ta' keep the suit functional."
This was turning into something potentially long-term. At least, until he himself could figure out how to replicate the process, whatever that ultimately looked like, and make those repairs himself. Farrin already knew mercury was going to be key, but how to integrate it into the suit without it remaining in contact with his skin, and testing for any other adverse effects was beyond him. There was a woman framed in something like silver in his dreams. She inspected his pocket watch and explained how it must have kept track of time even when he altered its flow. Her face wasn't entirely clear, but he heard her voice, knew some of his watch's components were made of mercury and somehow that kept it tune with time outside his fields - so, mercury was part of the equation.
"N', do yuh' have anythin in mind fer testin me' quirk? I can tell yuh' I summon fields me' quirk doctors said are composed o' temporal energy, which may or may no' be related ta' Cherenkov radiation - honestly they were guessin' themselves. Anyway, it's in these fields I can slow or accelerate the passage o' time," he started the explanation. "I've reason ta' believe liquid mercury can be impressed wit' this energy n' retain it, which would give me somethin' ta draw on without taxin' meself. That said, I dun' know exactly how it works or if there'd be any other side effects which is what I figure might need some testin'."

It became immediately apparent that they didn't need to move toward Apogee's patrol route because the Electric Shock Hero had found them. Standing atop the edge of one of the building's overheard, the skull-masked blond spun a rod in his hand, then aimed it toward the side of the temporal wall the goons were on.
A small sphere of electricity shot out of the rod toward the goons and stopped between the bunch. A flash of light obscured the gunmen, leaving only the buzz of electricity running through their bodies and the sound of their spasms and spittle. None were killed, but when the light faded, their bodies dropped to the ground, unconscious.
Apogee landed, swinging his rod into the next closest goon's gut. Meanwhile, Farrin looked to Kei, "c'mon, those projectiles are gonna move soon." But, from Apogee's rod, two electrical tethers slapped into the bullet and the cannonball. The bullet popped in place, and the cannonball lost all momentum, falling to the ground uselessly. Another swing of his rod and another of the goons crumpled onto the ground. Apo then turned to face the students.
"And where would you be without little ol' me," Apogee teased.
"Feckin loudmouth," Farrin muttered with a smile.
Two more goons remained, one charging the hero and the other moving toward Kei. Farrin darted between Kei and the goon, lodging a fist into the fella's jaw. This one was tough though. He ate the blow and threw a jab of his own into Farrin gut. Pain pulsed up from the time-turner's core, but bending with the blow, Farrin thrust his head into the goon's nose, throwing him back a step. Another jab and the big fellas went down. Apogee, however, was already standing over his opponent's unconscious form.
"Still a bit slow, time-turner," he teased again. "And should you be doing stuff like this? Back in my day, you needed a preliminary license to take action against criminals." Of course, Farrin knew the young hero didn't really care. Barty or Pinnacle would, but Apogee was of the mischievous, troublemaking sort. Still, Farrin parried.
"They shoved us inta' the alley n' one had a knife ta' me throat. Self-defense says me. Plus, couldn't let em' lay a hand on me sham here," he gestured toward Kei, "this is Kei Hada, second year that made me' new suit. Kei, this is Apogee."
"Nice to meet you," Apo offered Kei, "Farrin's told us about your work. You fellas sure you weren't just taking the suit out for a little field testing?" He continued to tease, wearing a smile below his mask.

Farrin could talk his way through a bout or critique a match all day, but otherwise, he didn't really do "cheery." In truth, the time-turner avoided most people until they proved interesting or otherwise good-natured. Growing up homeless for half your life sort of had that effect on people. Luckily, Jason very much fit into the latter box. The former, too, actually. He seemed a good sort and knew how to break down a proper scrap.
"Yeah, sure, some grub sounds brilliant," Farrin replied after Hiroshi & Fujisaki left.
Chronokinesis was always eating away at Farrin's gut, making him constantly hungry. The mutation facet to his quirk was always speeding him up a dash, including things like signals firing off in his brain, which took more out of people than they might realize. Take that, then subtract his earlier training, and Farrin was famished. Plus, with the threat of the sparring situation removed, he and Jason could go back to talking over combat tactics and such. That was basically was getting to know Farrin looked like.
"C'mon, let's head ta' the cafeteria." And with that, Farrin would lead the duo away from the sparring field and to the closest path back to the university's main building, where the cafeteria awaited their inevitable assault on its many awaiting meals.

While his hunger was ever-growing due to the nature of his quirk and the way it sped up his bodily processes, even without the emitter function, Farrin was looking for some interactivity. Things to do with friends like Natsumi, the other usual suspects he had met around campus, and Sada. After all, they couldn't just stand around and eat all day.
"This one looks interestin," he offered, trailing beside Natsumi.
The booth was heavily populated by stringy threads connected to various toys and candies which hung in the air. The threads then looped together in a mess at the apex of the booth and lined back down toward the front of the booth where they were tied to several wooden knobs for participants to pick from. Natsumi was right. There was only one person ahead of them. With more knobs than people, they were free to approach the booth and give the game a try.
"Senbon Biki," Farrin read the name of the game off the booth's signage. "Let's give it a go, yeah?"
Natsumi had been pretty on board with trying anything and everything, so Farrin approached the booth with her at his side. This time, it was Farrin that made the first move to pay. Luckily, nothing appeared to be overly expensive through the festival grounds. A few yen dropped and both of them were free to choose a few strings to tug at. Farrin's ruby eyes trailed quite a few toys. He had to bring something back for Sada even if he planned to take her out here later, but he couldn't let the morning go by without giving Natsumi something as well, for entertaining him and tagging along. Luckily, there were a few obvious targets. Now he just had to hope he tugged at the right strings.

Not only did Farrin move like lightning, but he processed the world faster, too. His personal acceleration field sped up the signals traveling through his body and brain. He lifted his leg over the lower strike, then leaned out of the upper baton's reach. A little rope-a-dope of sorts, Farrin then leaned forward and thrust his balled fist into the officer's helmet, grounding him as well. Another kick delivered to the first downed officer's side sent him rolling a few feet. Then the reinforcements came.
Behind the two new brawlers, Farrin finally saw the shimmering fibers that connected the puppets to the puppet master. "How many more bleedin' dolls yuh' have fer' us?" he spat under his breath. There were a few seconds still, or at least it felt as such in his mind, until the two approaching guards joined the second Farrin had just planted on the ground - who was beginning to recover himself. Seconds Farrin spent trialing the many threads he was seeing. Rather than trail each opponent back to the puppeteer, he started from Bravo, counting ten threads. Johanna and her opponents were obscured by the very APC that sat between them now, so he couldn't see what she was up against, but there was one thread held in reserve still.
Then the two new guards came in swinging, snapping him out of the moment. Farrin backpedaled two steps, then pushed forward and swung. The shot connected with the closer of the two new enemies. A baton caught his raised arm though, one of the two original opponents he down coming in swinging. The shocked spat up his arm, forcing Farrin back a step. His arm spasmed twice, and the guards kept swinging. He was far from out yet, though. The snap of his leg caught his attacker in the shin, and a hard right jab put the fella out for good - or at least for the rest of the exercise. The two new guys both swung their batons... which hovered in the air, the forward momentum of their hands seemingly leaving the weapons behind.
The two batons hung in the air, falling in slow motion. Temporal deceleration fields ensnared the weapons - and only the weapons. Farrin threw another hard right jab into the left guard's helmet, then cracked his elbow against the guard on the right. Both were knocked to the ground, their meters swiftly draining.
With Farrin's left arm responding well again, he snatched the two batons out of the air as the deceleration fields collapsed. Miroru's light-denying field rose just in time. Farrin wrapped the two batons in acceleration fields, then lobbed them toward the darkness. He wasn't the most accurate at range, but Bravo, assuming he was still in the blob of Miroru-made darkness, wasn't too far. If they took Bravo out, the others might just snap out of his control.
Meanwhile, Ironclad reassembled her armor and swung her mace back and forth between her own enemies, bringing the weapon down into one guard's side, then slamming it through the other's baton. Their meters hadn't drained to orange yet, but they were certainly on their way. One rose with the swing of his weapon but the hero-aspirant was quick to counter with a swing of her own, putting the first guard down for good. The second guard rose though, ready for another round.

Far from optimal when Farrin’s main thing was moving fast. Luckily, that wasn’t the only card up the time-turner’s sleeve. His deck was, admittedly, stacked. “The genetic jackpot,” that’s how many of the quirk scientists referred to him and his luck being born with Chronokinesis. It came with plenty of challenges for sure, but its strengths were undeniable.
The bat phased right through the Gator, but Freja hadn’t backed off before landing a blow. A shot to the back of his heel saw the Gator staffer. Leg injury or not, that was opening enough for Farrin. The time-turner charged.
He grit his teeth, biting down through the pain, and blazed ahead. The Gator swing one of its massive hands his way in an attempt to wave away his attacker, but another field, a two-foot by two-foot disk of temporal energy, headed off the Gator’s attack. His hand became anchored in a field of temporal deceleration. It would only last a few seconds, but the giant hand would slow to crawl within the field and for a few seconds after.
Meanwhile, Farrin leaped throwing his right fist up into the Gator’s elongated jaw. The force was enough to thrust the Gator’s whole body upward a beat, but the momentum rebounded, his slowed hand anchoring him to the spot still. When Farrin landed he added a kick of his own to the Gator’s other leg, his Achilles tendon to be exact.
The attack was not met without retaliation. There was no temporal warning this time around. A tail snapped out from behind the Gator and this time successfully sent Farrin flying back. It was a weakness of his, relying on his temporal danger sense. When it didn’t arrive, Farrin could occasionally be caught off guard, even when the world appeared to move so slowly. The time-turner was sent rolling across the glades again, the Gator now free of the temporal deceleration field.
“Think I’m done already?” The Gator challenged, but some damage had been done, that much was clear. His balance wasn’t steady. His posture wavering. Unfortunately, he began his retreat into the ground, putting the student duo back on the defensive.

Farrin didn’t want to hurt the lad, but even still he was trying to pick himself up to keep the fight going. That was until Jason’s distress became audibly clear. Blades’ senses seemed to return, then the scowl he wore retreating into something more concerned, and his arms went slack at his sides.
Finally, Farrin picked himself up and dusted himself off, slapping the cuts and slashes on his arms, hoping the brief sting might push out the continued searing pain. When it was clear the instinctual reaction wasn’t enough, he crossed his arms and put pressure on the wounds he could reach. “Next time maybe try takin’ a different approach,” Farrin commented, his gaze shifting from Blades, who was picking himself up as well, to Jason who was running back with his backpack.
“Thanks, lad, I got-“
Before he could finish, Jason went to work wrapping his arms. Farrin wouldn’t protest. The little fella clearly knew what he was doing. Farrin knew some first aid basics, learned in both Hero Prep & again here at UAU, but for years he had Sada to handle the worst of his damage. Support he could no longer rely on.
“Thanks, lad,” Farrin offered, as Jason turned to the other.
“Yeah, again, try soemthin’ a little different next time, Blades.” Farrin’s words didn’t carry Jason’s care, but neither were they pointed. “N’ yeah, maybe try ta’ maintain that sparrin’ etiquette Leonid imparted on us.”
“The name’s Hiroshi, Hiroshi Suzuki,” Bone-Blades spoke up, “and I apologize. Increased aggression is part of my quirk. It’s something I’m trying to get under control.”
Well, that explained it. Didn’t excuse the lad’s action entirely, but at least there was some reasoning behind it.
“I imagine that difficult ta’ deal wit’. I’m glad yer tryin’, though.”
It seemed, for now at least, peace between the students had been restored. No need to worry that one of them would end up in the hospital or worse. At least there was an understanding between them all now. Hopefully, that aggression something Hiroshi would get under control soon.

No turning back now. So, he lead them down the grungy back alleys and trailed the path he and Zenkai took the last time he was here.
“Tch, nah, they, whoever they are, seem ta’ have me on their radar constantly. I can count on me’ hand the number of times I’ve left campus without runnin’ inta some sort o’ trouble.”
Its number of people out in harm's way by virtue of proximity to Farrin was growing. Freja came out of that scrap with the plague mask people dressed in several knives poking out of her shoulder and leg. Thea had collapsed from her wounds, shot and stabbed by some of those armored guys. Whatever was going on, Farrin had to get to the bottom of it.
“I’ve no concrete proof the attacks are connected, but there’ve been some similarities in each instance. Also, remember I mentioned I see n’ hear things sometimes, in relation ta’ me quirk, well I keep seein a symbol I saw painted nearby ‘ere, so I figure this was a place ta’ start, see if I can find that concrete proof.”
The two would emerge from the alleys and into a long, dingy street framed in hanging lights and shattered glass. The street was entirely devoid of life, its simple existence almost exuding an aura antithetical to life. This is where he found Magister, so the symbol would be nearby.
“Alright, head on a swivel n’ all that, lass.”

Unlike the emitter facet of Chronokinesis, the mutations to his mind weren’t something so easily turned off. Time didn’t pass as a crawl as it had when he was in a scrap, but waiting was still tantamount to torture. Still, he wasn’t about to interrupt the support student when she was in the middle of waste disposal or whatever the hell that was.
By the time Ana popped out to the room, her straight-to-the-point approach was more appreciated than off-putting. Small talk was the bane of Farrin’s existence. So many seconds peddled away for trivialities. He had forced himself through the niceties with quite a few of his peers these past few months. For once, he could get straight to the point.
“I’m lookin ta upgrade me’ hero outfit. One o’ yer classmates, maybe ya know him, Kei Hada, helped lay on some upgrades a few weeks ago but this time I’m lookin’ ta go a little more high concept. Yuh see, me’ quirk interacts wit’ time n’ I’ve a theory that a certain metal, in small quantities, that might be able ta’ enhance me’ abilities a bit. I heard yer one o’ the best in the support department between all grades, so I came here ta’ you. Yuv time now fer me ta’ run the particulars by yuh?”
She was already listening, that had to count for something, but there was always the possibility Ana had a class coming up. But, the sooner they got this done, the better. Farrin had something of a string of bad luck following him during his off-campus ventures. He might’ve only been a freshman, but he needed his gear in tip-top shape. Who knew what threat lay just outside the university’s walls for his next excursion?

And Natsumi seemed to enjoy it so that was a plus. His ignorance on the celebration and, perhaps, lack of palate hadn’t dulled her vibe. He wasn’t trying to be a downer on this little morning adventure.
“Now that sounds good,” he commented.
Karaage is some kind of cooked chicken, that he could get behind. Chicken and beef were the cookie-cutter meats but that was fine by him. He didn’t deny his basic taste buds. He liked what he liked.
“Any idea what else they’ve got goin’ on besides the food? I’m all fer tryin a bit e’erythin, but I heard there were some games set up n’ such. Just curious what that all looks like.”
Farrin’s hunger was pretty much infinite, so sampling all the vendors was a solid start to the day, but eventually, they had to check out what kind of games were set up. Aside from the Murdah Ball tournament, of course. Farrin had already signed up for that with some of the other students. An interesting mix of traditional sports and quirk usage. Still, that left the question, what else was going around the festival grounds?
