The first few weeks of The Ethics of General Heroics had been covered quite thoroughly in Hero Prep. Farrin didn't need to be here. His transcript disagreed.
The heel of his boot bounced up and down, eyes locked on the clock at the head of the lecture hall. Today, he had a mission, places to be, people to meet, and class was only getting in the way of that mission. Every agonizing turn of the seconds hand landed like another hour gone by. Even outside of his Temporal State, Farrin perceived the world at a crawl. It was borderline debilitating at times. To see and hear it all so slowly, but it required an extra effort to slow his head down, to ingest and process the world at slow-mo Joe speeds.
"O'Rourke, tell us, what's the minimum punishment for Excessive Force by a hero?" SuperNova, one of UA's more renowned Pro-Hero educators, asked.
An earsplitting buzz sounded throughout the hall. Saved by the bell. Of course, he knew the fine and potential years of prison such force might see a hero face, but the time it took to utter any answer, the desperate seconds he lost to such trivialities, each would land like a bullet to the chest. Luckily, he had dodged the damage this time. He was already gone.
A blur of alabaster and emerald cut out from the main building, where most of the lecture halls and classrooms were located, and across campus to the dorms. There, Farrin snatched up his hero outfit, made by a Support-Aspirant back in Hero Prep and further modified a few times here at UAU, then zoomed back toward the heart of campus. He need to reach the support labs to find a specific someone. One Ana Brovosky. Reputed to be one of UA's most intelligent students and a gifted support savant. Someone who might be able to wrap their head around what Farrin wanted for the newest iteration of his outfit. Kei's modifications & redevelopment certainly helped, but the new additions just might bring his outfit to a new level.
He burst through the halls, dipping and dodging other students, peeking into any of the support labs that weren't in active use by a formal class. He was told that, for whatever reason, this was one of the best hours of the day to find the girl tinkering by herself in the labs. So one by one he knocked each room off the list.
"Is there an Ana Brovosky in 'ere?" He'd ask in one room, just in case she wasn't alone this time, "Oi, anyone know where I can find Ana Borovsky?" He'd then ask the next. The process would continue until their threads were eventually tied at a nearly empty lab at the end of the third floor hall.

Without it, Chronokinesis slowed him to a crawl. However, having already been in his temporal state, not only did he move faster, but the world around Farrin felt slower. That included Leo's reply. The words had hardly left his mouth when Farrin agreed.
"Loud n' clear, boyo," Farrin accepted.
He slammed the temporal pedal down and cranked the speedometer up to max. What was an equal pace just a moment prior turned into Farrin flying forward, down the track, Every inch he put between himself and Leo cooled the back of his brain. Distance was a blizzard atop the forest fire.
For whatever reason Leo had chosen to be so resistant to Farrin's simple question, he had chosen the wrong game to challenge Farrin in. Farrin turned time around himself to run along its course faster, making the world feel slower around him. White tufts of temporal flamed burned in and out of existence around him, joined by emerald sparks as he turned up the power of his quirk.
These elements lacked the qualities of their natural counterparts, but at the quirk scientists bests guess when he was younger, they were the mind's way of interpreting time being forced into the visible world. There was plenty of temporal gas in the tank still, and a lap around the track would be over in all of a few seconds unless Leo's quirk could do something about it. But what were the odds of that? After all, speed was Farrin's domain.

As the sun set, Farrin had been finishing up an evening session in UAU's gym. The facility was most packed during the late afternoon, just after most typical classes ended, so Farrin waited until a few hours after to transfer from his grassy hill at the back of the training fields to the actual gym for some proper weight lifting. One final set saw his biceps drenched, lifting weight just shy of a small vehicle when Sada's words reached him. The Infinity system was quite the investment, one that paid for itself in her safety.
The overloaded, hyper reinforced barbell slammed hard into the ground. Not the sort of gym rat he aspired to be, but acceptable gym etiquette was a raindrop of importance weighed against the ocean that was his Sada. No lengths too great. No challenge too difficult. No barriers he wouldn't break to bring his baby home safe. In a blur of emerald and alabaster he's gone. Off campus before anyone could advise otherwise.

The Infinity system was mostly one way, for now. Luckily, it provided GPS coordinates to his phone. The sprawling metropolis was massive, though, and while he dusted the myriad street racers whizzing about the city's many avenues and highways, it would be a few minutes still before he reached her. Sada was far from helpless, the Infinity's Halo was sharp and she knew how to use it, but she had always leaned more into support roles than direct combat. It made them a most deadly duo, but those duo tactics required they be within close proximity, so he burned across the distance at best speed.
Before the sun had set, Farrin sped across half the city. He zipped between pedestrians, cut between streets and alleyways, homing in on her location. Just a few more seconds, and he would be beside. She just needed to hold out a few seconds against whatever "situation" she had found herself in.

Very important reading. As experienced as they were in the subject, it was imperative the brushed up daily. Who knew how many dragons they'd need to tame in the field? Quirked-up animals existed, after all.
He pulled his shirt over his head after a time, thinking back to their silly back and forth earlier. Call her pretty? She was the most beautiful creature to have ever graced the earth, and yet that was nowhere close to where his love of her began. All it took was a stare. He had seen Sada in sifting dreams before Hero Prep, but after he had crashed into the bleachers and woke to the pink pools of her eyes, the doubt sewn into his head and heart had evaporated. He disdained destiny, the idea that something had to happen, but how could Sada's thread and his not be intertwined? Theirs was a match made in a place beyond comprehension and understanding. A place that left heaven green with jealousy, for even in that supposed place such happiness and joy could not be forged. She was his reason. And high as his ambitions soared, she was all that mattered. His Sada over everything else. Life itself if it came to it.
"Yuh' sure yuh' dun' want somethin' ta' eat?" He asked. She might've been full, but she could certainly use some food. Who knew how long it had been since her last proper meal?
Farrin dropped back on the bed, beside his dragoness. "N' no you," he teased again, continuing their earlier play, turning over onto his shoulder to lose himself once again in those familiar pink pools. He could lose himself forever in those perfect twin orbs. His right arm drew back across the bed, snatching up his phone and thumbing on a cute little playlist, before tossing the device aside and throwing his arm around her, pulling her in close.
In another time, another tale, they're dancing atop Tokyo to the very same song. It's how he found it to begin with, in the briefest glimpse of another thread where Sada and Farrin had found each other and made each other better. It was the most common theme among those times he had peeked into. The only versions of himself worse than those that never found her were those where he had lost her. It was a fate far worse than any possible death, and one he would never abide - because the woman in his arms was his everything.
He nuzzled his cheek against hers again, "In case yuh' fergot, I luv you," he whispered in her ear before kissing her again, once more lost in bliss.

What laid at the end of the Prism's rainbow was an unknown, but surely she had a plan worth its weight in the ol' pot of gold in store for the second of the inky duo. If she could manipulate electromagnetic waves and the like, that meant she could play with light - best explanation he had for her rainbow on demand. She was also talking some real shite back at the crimson clad fecker. Ironclad, however, had been tossed aside by the first of the duo. Known versus unknown. Prism was building up to something he didn't know. Ironclad appeared as though they could use some help. The decision made itself, but first he had to make a quick stop.
At chronokinetic speeds, Farrin swept the injured civilians robots and actors off the street and deposited them in a store about half a block down the street. He'd bring them to the secure zone after settling this scuffle. Another translucent deceleration zone would form around them, assuring any approaching threat would be slowed in its attempt to reach them, then he was gone.
"Aye, shitestain!" Farrin called out, beaming in on the darker of the thuggish duo. "Yer forgettin' someone!"
The warning might served as a distraction, and in Farrin's experience, most didn't have time to react, regardless of his taunts, so he continued straight for the Sinner's back, targeting it with the hammer that was his right fist. He was a wrecking ball at lambo speeds. If they could take the bigger threats down, the rest of the thugs be programmed to, or act as cowards. If not, he'd deal with them after.

If he couldn't call a few obvious points out on two fighters in a rather straightforward match, he would have never heard the end of it. Exploitation was a tool of the wise. Few were the truly fair fights out in the world beyond UA's walls. Though Farrin practiced his Emerald Fist incessantly, carving his fighting form to perfection, he was also extremely observant. There was no swifter path to victory than allowing your enemies to defeat themselves by revealing their shortcomings and weaknesses. Though the core of the Emerald Fist wasn't reliant on the enemy's weakness, the fact that Natsumi apparently fought strictly by exploiting such weaknesses further spoke to her wisdom in the art of the scrap.
"UAU may be a state o' the art institute, but I've seen what new n' experienced hero-aspirants look like at the start o' a school year. Ol' flames fer' fists was playin' aggressively because he knew he could. Goo boy was on defense because he didn't have any other choice. That simple really."
When they entered the cafeteria, Farrin let his nose do the decision-making. Before he made his move toward the Chicken Parm platter that was beckoning him, he'd answer Natsumi's last question, so as to not be rude.
"I dun' remember much from when I lived there. Like I said, we moved when I was very young, but we visited' me nan n' other family fairly often. It's, unsurprisingly, very green. Fewer cities, fewer people. They're much more in touch wit' the world 'round 'em. Looser on some o' the rules too, but mostly good people."
That didn't mean Ireland was devoid of the bad, of course. His distant cousins and family back there were part of an Agency "Clan O'Conner," not all O'Conners, but branched off that part of his maternal lineage. The only reason to need heroes though, was in response to villainy. Still, their plights were far fewer and typically less dire than those in other countries. Had he not been so stubborn after the passing of his mother, he probably would have gone back there to live with his remaining family.

There was a reason he needed to perform this technique, in this specific way, but that reason was his own. Farrin didn't share roots with his mother's quirk, but they were similar. Momentum Siphon saw her move at such speeds that she could pulverize boulders with her greater attacks. Her Ultimate Move, the Queen's Decree: Crimson Smash, was a single blow of unfathomable power. So, it was up to Farrin to master his own move in homage to her, the Blade of the King: Emerald Smash.
Farrin threw his weight down on his left foot again, then kicked off with his right delivering another heavy right-handed bunch against the base of the spire. Again he summoned micro-fields of temporal acceleration and deceleration, his fist acting as a pin against the temporal primer. Temporal power exploded at the edge of his fist as it smashed against stone again, more fissures growing upward and outward across the spire, more debris falling, yet it still lacked the strength he sought. The fields were collapsing too early, their intensity requiring too much focus when he was swinging so hard. While the temporal powers were tearing the stone apart, it was more his fist than his quirk.
He drew his hand away and shook it out again. Beating back any snappy retort he had in regards to his accent. Clearly, Emilia didn't mean anything by it.
"Eh, think nothin' o' it," he said to Emilia, staring at the damage he'd done before shifting his gaze back to Jun. "N' it's no' about brute force. Not brute force alone at least. It's 'bout precision. I'm just havin' a difficult time focusin' some aspects o' me' quirk, hence the practice." This was why they were here. To become the best heroes they could be. That required time, effort, and dedication. Commodities Farrin was willing to trade in spades to become who he needed to be.
"N' yer right, I am a first year, but I'm familiar 'nuff wit' the materials from these first few weeks. Best ta' focus on what I dun' know. Sooner I learn it, sooner I can perfect it, sooner I dun' need ta' concern meself wit' quirks that provide toughness without some glowin' weak point."
Most quirks had a weakness of some sort, but not all were so apparent. And then there were the exceptions. The badasses that had overcome those weaknesses, those that required a simple yet excruciatingly troublesome solution. Breaking through the unbreakable. Farrin lucked out when fighting that Golem-man with Thea. His defenses were tough, but not so thick that he couldn't break through with his Chornokinetic speed. It didn't hurt that the thug was undisciplined too.
Turning Emilia, he'd give her his two cents, "back home, we had a hero called Herculean wit' a muscular type o' quirk. He'd pick up a stone 'bout the size o' his considerable fist, crumble it, then pitch the debris at absurd speeds against tougher types o' villains. Dun' know the extent o' yer' quirk's strength, but I imagine if yuh' grow it enough yuh' could do somethin' similar, albeit a more controlled scale. He didn't have the best reputation when it came ta' property damage n' really reserved this option fer the real tough ones."

The aroma of a dozen dishes and more wafted out every time one of their fellow classmates entered or exited the doors. Victory in the form of a full belly was nearly within his grasp. Afterward, he'd go back to training for another hour, then meet up with Sada when she got out of class and they could go about their own exercises and studying together.
"Makes sense," he responded, "yuh' clearly have a decent head on yuh' fer' a fight. Made some good observations on that little bout we were watchin' so it was clear yuh' had some sort o' trainin'."
Most people watched others fight for entertainment. They kept their eyes peeled for the cool-looking moves and dramatic comebacks, completely ignorant to every subtle cue and call that truly decided the victor. A slight turn of the waist at the right time, tucking behind your arms just a smidge too soon, there were so many minute variables that went into a real fight's outcome. It was entirely demonstrated in his explanation of commercial boxing versus Farrin's chosen fighting style, which stemmed from dornálaíocht, an Irish boxing form. Speaking of which.
"Was born in Dublin, Ireland, but me' family moved ta' the United States when I was but a wee one. Both are sort o' home in a way."
Both and neither. He had some family in Ireland still, including his Nan, but he hadn't seen them in years. New York was his childhood, but only five years of that childhood were worth anything. The other seven were rather bleak. Home was here, with Sada, now. A person more than any place could hope.
When they reached the door, Farrin held it open for Natsumi. Manners. But his head was already deep in the potential desserts he knew he shouldn't have. He should eat a salad, but his stomach hungered for something far less healthy.
"So what yuh' thinkin' o' gettin'?" He asked, eyeing the options spread across the cafeteria.

Though his little habit stemmed not from recollection but frustration and restlessness. Every grain of sand that fell through the hourglass pushed him a little further. The growing desert wrestling with his mum's emphasis on manners. Time was the most precious of commodities and right now he was trading it away for nothing.
"Yup. No’ that I’d remember it, I was three at the time," Farrin replied, passively.
He wasn't invested in the hero's history. Not yet at least. Tracking the man down and learning what he could was his only concern. This "Barkeep" was the spitting image of the man in the photo Barty sent. What's more, the hero's name stirred the Noyote pot. The world was slow in Farrin's eyes, he noticed more than most. Every twitch, every reaction, every hushed comment. No. Tanuki's name meant something here. Not in the "oh yeah, now that was a hero" sort of way. It was personal.
"Dun' think War Dog was the Tanuki's brother, lass. What I know is, I was told I might find the former Symbol o' Strength 'round this part o' town, that I bumped inta' a bar run by a man o' his spittin' image, host ta his number one fangirl, n' a bunch o' patrons that shift in their seats at the man's name. Whole lot o' attention bein' paid ta' the mention o' a long-dead man."
He was plugging the pieces together to form a most obvious puzzle. Whatever the reason they chose to bury this man's past, the Noyote did little to hide it. "Eh, yuh' okay down there, lass?" He called down the hill to his apparent admirer below. "If yuh've any questions, well, I dun' bite." But he sure had a mean right hook. Hopefully, that's what she was interested in. Freja had approached him during their first week to learn a bit about his boxing style. Maybe this girl had similar questions?
Farrin waved his hand, inviting her up the hill. It was his sanctuary, carved out of the training grounds and made his own. Several names had been crossed off his mental list, but "dojo" seemed to stick. A place of self-improvement, one he trained in often and occasionally assisted others in their journey as well. Had he just scribbled more instruction across his to-do list for the day, or did the girl have other reason for staring? Hopefully, not one that would earn her Sada's ire. There were few things Farrin ranked as scarier than his fists. That was one of them. On which side it would land was anyone's guess. Heads was dominated by impatience and looked a lot like Farrin laying his hands on the gleaming, wooden bar top, calling the former-hero on his bullshit. Tails was his mother's voice in his ear, telling him that that was no way to treat someone you intended to ask for help. His hand swept through the air of the mentalscape and snatched the coin, then slammed it down.
Farrin took a seat at the bar, eyeing the menu. He wasn't going to put distance between himself and the Barkeep, but he'd play along. His eyes ran down the bar and off in Zazie's direction. Doesn't know what?
"Yeah, right 'ere if yuh' wanna take a peep," he offered, flipping his phone back on and pulling up his picture of the Tanuki in action. He set the device down on the counter if Zazie wished to join him. "Gotta say, the resemblance is strikin'," he continued, turning his attention back on the Barkeep. "Yuh' could be his brother, twin e'en."
Farrin clutched onto the topic, refusing to let it go. He came here for a reason. To become the best, he needed guidance from the best. Apparently, that was this barkeeper, once.
"Hmm, can't go wrong wit' breakfast fer' lunch. I'll take 'em bangers n' eggs. Some water too if yuh' no' mind."
And maybe while we're at it you'll cut the bs and admit you're exactly who I think you are, but he never said that. Impatience lived in the shadows of a time-turned mind. It was his negative, his quirk's equal but opposite. When the world already crawled so slowly around him, hell looked like traffic. Vehicular, conversational, anything that ate up time boiled Farrin's blood. There was no going back to a volkswagen after you experience the Lamborghini.

Pursuing one's passions and ambitions was one of life's greatest purposes. That and family, by blood and otherwise, were the two most important facets of this journey all living beings went through. Hopefully, rather than fall on his flawed instincts, goo-boy would take the time to think things through and adjust. Adapt to the situation, and hopefully walk away with the satisfaction of having landed a blow against what appeared to be a superior opponent.
Moving beyond the training fields though, partway between the hill and the campus's main building, Farrin nodded along in response to Natsumi's experience with the university so far. Yeah, being away from home wasn't easy. Granted, Farrin didn't have much of a home after his mother passed, but New York in its entirety had become his home. Being plucked up and dropped off in a country he'd never been to before where everyone spoke a different language required quite the adjustment.
"Aye, I can understand that." Perhaps his views weren't framed by bubbly sentiment, but UAU was definitely well-maintained and, again, he understood the adjustment it required. "Yeah, Hero Prep was a lil' like this, but far, far smaller. Even partakin' in combat simulations was a big deal, but 'ere it's the norm. E'eryday we're scrappin' wit' robots n' all sorts o' challenges. Definitely a step up from me' prior education."
The Above & Beyond hero agency that functionally acted as Farrin's guardians in Japan, and had helped train him as well, had equipment akin to that of UAU, but it was far smaller in scale. Even in their massive basement, they could only fit so much by comparison to the even more massive campus of UAU.
"How 'bout trainin'? Had ta' have some formal practice before the entrance exams, right?"
She already knew something of his heroic training roots. Though Natsumi lacked parents that partook in heroics, as politicians, he had to imagine she had access to some decent resources, even if only monetarily. Nobody really threw themselves at the exams with zero training. You had to have some sort of experience under your belt to make it into UAU.

Farrin's transcripts read B in most of his academic classes. Not the worst, but neither the best. Engineering, math, and sciences were the support students' domain. His blueprint probably looked like some middle program student's doodles to a second-year support student like Kei. If he was able to convey the basic concept, that was a win in his book.
"Works fer' me," he replied in regards to the division of munitions. "will keep the heated rounds on me' left side since I dun' intend on usin' 'em often." Though Farrin had no issue bringing the hammer down on villainy, he didn't want to kill anyone. The incendiary's place among his arsenal was an insurance policy against any armed with cold quirks or otherwise found themselves susceptible to heat. There were quirks out there that could alter a person's entire body. If someone out there could turn into some wooden golem or something like that, he needed to be ready.
"Thanks, lad. Yeah, dun' want ta' let pride n' some such get in the way o' efficiency. Like I said, I thought before I could get by wit' me' own born talents, skills, n such, but I can't let that thinkin' block me off from potential strategic avenues that might stop people from gettin' hurt."
Pride stood chief among Farrin's seven sins. There was nothing wrong with one having pride in themselves and their work. As a matter of fact, Farrin encouraged it in others. Pride could be a boon just as much as it could be a sin. The latter though, well, when you had too much pride it became a problem. History told many a tale of overconfidence and its ability to bring down empires. That wouldn't be Farrin's fate.
"Take all the time yuh' need. Yer doin' me the favor 'ere! Eh, one last question though if yuh' no' mind. Will these things require gunpowder or do yuh' have another delivery system in mind?"
He was the one asking for incendiaries, but that could be a potential problem near gunpowder. Or if his enemies had fire-based quirks. He needed to know the specifics going into his little idea before using it. "N' thanks fer' helpin' me out." Had to be respectful, just as Mum hammered into him.

Unusual for the massive metropolis, but Farrin wasn’t about to complain. After running a few simulations in one of their shared heroics classes, Farrin asked Thea if she might want to grab some pizza out in the city. It was one of the things UAU’s cafeteria lacked, but he knew a spot off campus that actually wasn’t half bad. Sada and the budding friend group he and Thea shared were still in class. So it was pizza for two this afternoon.
“So I know yer’ from the Dominican Republic,” he started as they dipped between a few pedestrians, “but have yuh’ e’er been Stateside? Ta’ New York in particular?”
He was drilling for a most important life experience. Had Thea experienced the greatness that was NY pizza? It was unrivaled, this was beyond dispute. And while he hadn’t found a single spot in Tokyo that lived up, his preferred pizza joint “Dougie’s” was pretty damn close. Was it run by a Doug? Who knew? All that mattered was it ranked among quality pizza, and coming from Farrin, a pizza connoisseur, that meant something.
Clear skies wrote every reason for the city’s population to stream into the streets, but their luck had held out. Aside from the odd passersby, things were mostly quiet. UAU was fairly isolated, surrounded by some woods, but they had long passed the earthy threshold and entered the city proper.
“I dun know how they do pizza by you, but most ‘round ‘ere isn’t much ta’ write home about. Place I’m takin’ us to isn’t so bad though. Almost good even.”
Battle-brained as Farrin was, this was a serious point of conversation. He lived off pizza, fresh and otherwise, back home. It was his life fuel, and they were about to partake in some that almost reminded him of home - in a good way. [attr="class","Farrin"] [attr="class","KC1"] [attr="class","FarrinBG"] [attr="class","FarrinTop"] [attr="class","FarrinContent"] The air parted before Farrin's fist, and though it lacked the thunderous boom he possessed in another time, precision and speed defined his every movement still. Four years of training built atop the seven years foundation of survival had made a machine of the young man. He was energy and lightning reflexes personified. Packed to the brim with confidence, or so it appeared from the outside, at least.
His combos were ever-flowing, like river rapids carrying both direction and force. One jab flew after another, a blur of movement until he cut the left-sided attacks off and brought the hammer of his right fist down on his imaginary opposition. The enemy took many shapes. Sometimes it was in his father's image, on other occasions it was but a mirror. He had to beat the weakness out of himself. He was both whetstone and the blade.
Whet too much though and there was the risk the blade became brittle. That is, everyone needed a rest from time to time. Another blur of motion, another three jabs fired away followed by another right cross. After that, Farrin's arms fell beside him, heavy and dripping beads of sweat from hours of exercise.
He shook his long limbs out, as if to will away his soreness, and turned again to face the training grounds below. Some of the speedsters continued to kick up dirt and gravel, others wrapped up their sparring matches, but one stood out. A girl who had singled herself out by - well by looking in his direction. Did he know her? Only Sada, Kenta, Miroru, and a few others from his dorm really paid him much mind. There was Natsumi too, but that was a single occasion. So what had he done this time to merit another of his peer's attention?
