There was a smart way and a fast way to see them to safety. This was one of the rare occasions Farrin did not opt for fast. Well... faster.
"Alrighty, e'eryone I'll need yuh' ta' remain calm," he started with confidence, calming the two actors who were far more animated in voicing their concerns than their robotic counterparts. "I'll take yuh' two at o' time, but no worries, I'll keep yuh all safe. You two, step closer ta' me."
Two actors stepped forward, leaving one more along with the two robotic civilians. Another turn of the wrist and a five-meter wide, one-meter thick dome of temporal energy surrounded them. It wasn't some impregnable shield, but anything threat that came coming, armed with weapons or otherwise, would take quite some time pushing through the deceleration fields. That would buy him the time he needed.
"Right then, 'ere we go!"
"Whoa, whoa! A-are you sure?" One of the actors asked as Farrin picked the fella up and threw him over his shoulder.
"I promise yuh, lad, no harm will come ta' yuh'. I'm gettin' you n' the others all outta 'ere."
Without another word, he was off. At best speed, even the rain appeared to crawl down from the sky. The temporal dome would only hold for the predefined few seconds Farrin had established so there was no time to waste. It was just long enough for him to run the two actors to the safe zone near the entry gates and back. The dome fell just as he arrived. Farrin repeated the process, picking up the last actor and one of the robots while creating another dome around the last of his charges. After making his run twice more, he was ready to turn his attention to the others.
The winds continued to build, the rain-soaked his hair and clothes, and visibility slowly degraded as the storm grew worse. But, in the time-turner's eyes, all remained still. The building Prism had taken was free of the tree that had been smashed into its side. There was no signal to grab Farrin's attention either, so the odds were she had her situation handled. So, Farrin beamed off toward Johanna. If Miroru didn't meet up with them even after the coming fight, he'd go looking for her.
Ironclad was standing toe-to-toe with the largest of the crooks. Fella had height on her, which meant reach too, and he looked as though he'd taken a dip in an ink bath. Still, her quirk was built for a beating. He'd leave the big one to her for now. There were still a few smaller crooks trying to drag some robotic civilians away. That's where Oberon would start.
His entrance was marked by the immediate collapse of the thug dragging the civilian across the street. A quick kick to the back of the crook's knee staggered the fecker, then Farrin grabbed him by the shoulder and encouraged gravity with a rather firm shove. Farrin picked the civilian up and ran him into the closest secure building. Another burst of speed and he was on top of a second thug, chopping the opposition's arm aside with his left hand, then delivering a hard right into the crook's side. Not enough to break anything, but certainly enough to wind him. A sweep of the legs and he too fell. There weren't too many small fries left, but they'd have to work the big fella down if Ironclad couldn't manage it alone. He eyes their surroundings, deciding between backing her up or taking down the last few minions. After this, there was just whatever other surprises lied in wait, deeper in the storm taken city.

He wasn't aware of every hero that populated the planet, but she was certainly up there. Even his remarkable speed paled in comparison to Morgana, The Crimson Light's aka his Mum's. He'd be that fast one day. He had to be.
"Happened quite some years ago now though, so just keep lookin' forward n' all that."
Spit-for-goo and Fist-fists returned to their starting positions again. Whether or not the goo-boy finally landed a blow on the fire starter would remain unknown. Judging by the growl of Natsumi's stomach, she was growing just as hungry as he was. That meant it was time to grab a bite.
"Eh, he'll learn or he'll leave. Guess we'll see in time, let's head ta' the cafeteria," Farrin stood, dusting himself off, then offering Natsumi a hand to help her up.
Whether or not she took it, he'd start off down the hill and make for the path that led to the campus's interior, toward the main building. That's where the cafeteria could be found. There were smaller kitchens in each of the dorm buildings, but they paled in comparison to the university's true offerings. Farrin was a sucker for all the breakfast food, the chicken parm, and the variety of desserts. Now that his Mum wouldn't have approved of. In his defense, Farrin usually opted for nutritious meals that supported his extreme workout regimen, but there were occasions where one cheat meal became breakfast, lunch, and dinner. His stomach was ready to sing a chorus at the very thought.
"So how're yuh' findin' campus life?" He'd ask as they made their way to the cafeteria, "likin' e'erythin so far? They're definitely better equipped than the Hero Prep school I attended. Gotta give 'em that much."

Of course, that didn't mean Jun's assessment was entirely wrong either. The throbbing in his hand was pulsating fire now, but she was right about something else as well. He was making progress.
Farrin drew his right fist back again, then fired it forward, summoning more and more temporal micro-fields. Concentrated doses of acceleration became hyper-acceleration, speeding the affected points of contact up to the point that rock became dust, this was exacerbated by the slow effects of his other fields, like tearing the stone in two directions in time. His fist was only the medium by which these specialized fields made contact. This wasn't strength training, this was quirk training. Ultimate training, though ahead of schedule, and he had no intention of stopping.
" 'Preciate the concern, but I'm no' just tryin' ta' break boulders fer the fun o' it. I'm workin' on somethin'," he added, swinging his open palm a few times to will the pain away. Then he turned to face Jun, except he found two unfamiliar faces rather than one. Another girl who was apologizing for reasons he didn't understand. "Eh, think nothin' o' it? Me name's Farrin. Farrin O'Rourke," he said with a nod, "N' I'm guessin' that makes you Jun," he turned his attention to the girl that had spoken first. He only got her name off Emilia's entrance.
Further back there were the familiar faces of Robin and Freja as well, but he wasn't going to peel himself away from his training for the exchange of pleasantries. Not yet at least.
"Well, again, I 'preciate the concern, but Ultimate Move trainin' is still a few months out accordin' ta' the curriculum n' I dun' believe in waitin' that long. There are quirks out there that make steel n' stone o' flesh, so whatever I come up wit', it needs ta' be able ta' break those sorts o' defenses."
With his explanation given, Farrin turned back to his boulder and entered his stance again. His right fist fired forward, and this time debris began to fall from the upper heights of the spire. But, again, she was right, his fist was definitely in f*****g' pain.

Get hurt, wish others didn't. The ol' "I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy" line embodied. To understand pain, one needed to feel it. And once it was understood, the more empathetic of the world wished to spare others of its ilk. In so doing, they healed themselves as well. Something like that.
"I think it's a bit more multifaceted than that. Yuh' can want ta' heal yerself n' simultaneously spare others what it was yuh' went through. I do think the underlyin' theme o' pain n' trauma does give most o' our peers that extra bump that puts 'em over the rest that dun' make it, but that's no' to say their intentions aren't good."
Self-preservation was a beast that lived in all. There was no denying it helped motivate some to heal however they could, but signing up for a school that prepared you for fighting the greatest threats this side of the world probably didn't rank high on the survivalist's list. Heroes didn't have long life expectancies. Salve the soul? Sure. Live a long and full life? Not for most.
"Wasn't bein' exactly literal, lass. But, though I can't spare e'eryone from pain, I'll be so fast the air will crack wit' me e'ery move n' the villains out there lookin' ta' harm others will know they're dun' fer." It had happened in other times. Oberon's speed became so great, sound itself was left in his wake. He could do it. He had to. "So I guess I'll jus' have ta' prove yuh' wrong because me' flight won't make me an Icarus. I fly only upwards."
When Farrin met the girl's gaze, it was like she was doped up again. Lost in her quirk or some sort. Whatever it was that brought her her admission at the dorms that day. Farrin knew what it was to be lost, adrift in the vast expanse of the temporal sea, but that was only in his dreams, or the rare occasion he pushed his quirk too far. Whatever plagued the Mentat's mind, did so with impunity. Could she fight back against it at all? Or was she a wayward soul, waiting on board the next lucid moment?
"Alrighty, I've an idea" he said, concern lightly laced with his word. "I think there's a bus no' too far from 'ere we can catch. That should speed things up." There were other options, but what would speeding up the Mentat's mind do? Help her wad through the waters of her mind, or see her spin off into some sort of lunacy? That was a risk he'd take another time.

But he wasn't Farrin fast. At least not while Chronokinesis was up. As Leo picked up speed, Farrin did the same. So far, he hadn't met a single student, hell, not even a teacher, that could keep pace with his full speed. Even Leonid almost fell under Farin's fist due to the speed advantage the time-turner held over most. Still, this fella made him queasy, like his gut was knotting tighter and tighter with the closeness of their proximity.
"What? Yuh' can't walk n' talk?" Farrin jabbed the challenge, maybe this approach might loosen Leo's lips. " 'Sides, what's in front o' me right now is the oddity of feelin' like we've met somewhere before despite me' not remember havin' e'er done so. So I'll ask again, have we e'er met?"
They were kicking up to speeds that nearly crossed into the unnatural. Only the most talented and skilled of athletes could run like this. Was this guy using his quirk? Or had he just put that much time and effort into his sprint? Outside of his Temporal State, Farrin wouldn't have been able to keep up - courtesy of Chronokinesis's drain on his speed while outside the former state. Even without that drain though, he wasn't sure yet anymore what he was capable of.
"I can do this all day, lad" Farrin added to the former comments.
That much was true. He could run for quite a while, and the extra oomph from his Temporal State definitely didn't hurt. Why was this guy resisting though? Why not just answer the question? It only made him seem more suspicious, and stirred all the more curiosity in the time-turner, even if he had to endure this insufferable headache.

Many in Japan were quite formal. Farrin, a mostly homeless boy for seven years before moving to Japan from across the world, was not. He didn't really do bowing or honorifics other than with the elderly. The perceived disrespect had earned him quite a number of odd stares and criticisms. He wasn't trying to be rude. He just didn't think of people on those terms - even now. He sure as hell wasn't calling everyone sir and madam back home or using many other American equivalencies. In any case, Kenta was pretty laidback with the formalities which, funny enough, earned him more respect than all the up-tights out there.
"Yes," Farrin said with a grin, "Yes, time certainly does fly." Okay, so no, Chronokinesis didn't make Farrin fly, but boy could he move fast. Kenta was one of the few around the globe, even among their peers from Hero Prep, that actually knew the nature of Chronokinesis. Namely, that it was a time manipulation quirk.
"Yuh' said your test was in Grounds Beta, right? They've transport that can get yuh' there in a few minutes, but on foot, I'm no' so sure. At least not without some time-turnin'. I can run there in a few minutes but only when I'm usin' me' quirk."
Farrin's exam was in the school's Unforeseen Simulation Joint. The downpour zone to be exact. It was much closer than Grounds Beta and Gamma, and still rather large, though not quite as much as the two formerly mentioned mock cities. How much money went into operating this place?
The time-turner couldn't help but grin at Kenta's comment while leading him across the field and onto the next path that turned toward Height's Alliance, the school's dorms. Yeah, there would certainly be quite a bit of sneaking around happening.
"Yup, e'ery room has a balcony. Quite convenient if yuh' ask me. N' nah, Sada's 'ere the day after next," was all he replied with. He'd let that topic end right there. "N' yeah, I've been peekin' around the place, seein' what it has ta' offer. It's like Hero Prep on steroids. Several buildins' wit' changeable environments fer various forms o' trainin', widest range o' workout equipment I've e'er seen in their gym. Trainin' robots like those in most o' our exams fer our use. N', again, the campus is entirely madness. It's brilliant, n' kinda mind-blowin'."
He hadn't shared his excitement with his peers thus far. They were all strangers, and Farrin hadn't been the quickest to befriend strangers. Crossing that line took time. Now, he had one of his friends with him though, so he could nerd out about how he was going to take his training to the next level - something even he hadn't thought possible.

Well, Farrin was certainly pale as a ghost, and while all that stood between Noyote and the storm was an ornate door, it might as well have played portal between worlds. Outside there was the morose march of the downtrodden caught in the rain and the infinite damp that befell the city. Within, there was the wafted scent of nuts and herbs. Whole and ground beans brewed to perfection and accompanied by pastries and good mystery novels.
None of which appealed to Farrin. Snuggling with Sada on the couch and enjoying the pitter-patter of rainfall against the window was prime comfort time, but Sada wasn't at his side at the moment, and he hadn't come looking for comfort. Farrin was on a mission - on the hunt for the Tanuki. Barty provided very little, but this was the place. He felt in his gut, and he trusted that gut more than his own mind.
Ruby eyes read the room and broke it down by chair and table. Not physically, of course, but Farrin was scanning the cafe's patrons over. A few curious stares were shared among those sipping their drinks and chewing on their cakes. His school uniform, mostly dry, may have singled him out. Or it was the laser-like gaze drifting from one group to another until that laser locked on the man behind the bar.
Farrin dug his phone from his pocket, thumbing his photos open and sliding to the saved picture Barty had sent him of the hero in action. Older, a little more scruffy, hair done a bit differently, but it was close. Extremely close. Like either it was him or his twin brother close.
Farrin pocketed his phone and approached the bar. He navigated between tables, avoiding any direct contact with those enjoying their personal time away from the world's plights. Leave them to their refuge. Things were shite enough out there.
"S'cuse me," He'd start, attempting to flag the barkeep down, "I'm lookin' fer' someone. Former hero. Big reputation sort. Yuh happen ta' be his spittin' image. No' a coincidence, right? Am I talkin' to the Tanuki?" Fairly straightforward. Perhaps a little too nonchalant but if this man was trying to hide his identity, Farrin wasn't going to go shouting the name out.

Day in and day out, whenever Farrin wasn't with Sada, he was training up atop his grassy hill at the edge of UAU's training grounds. Calisthenics was the name of the game - at least for a few more minutes. The vast expanse of greenery was one of the hill's many advantages over the gravel of the training fields. Perfect for exactly this sort of exercise.
Push-ups. Simple and effective. He had stopped keeping count a while ago. Numbers matter little when you're not looking to finish anytime soon. So he kept on going. Pressing up and down against the grass. Seconds ticked to minutes, which ticked into nearly an hour until finally, Farrin decided it was time to don the aforementioned crown jewel once again.
When he stood, it was to the sight of his peers running the track or sparing in the makeshift arenas. Only a handful of students had approached him since he'd taught those of his peers that saw it fit to laugh at Freja during orientation a lesson. Solitude was not an unwelcome guest. He had Sada. Who else did he need?
A silent gale whisked away a few beads of sweat and cast them to the wind.
"Well, back to it," he muttered, watching as a few speedsters tore up the track.
Part of him was tempted to partake in their little race, but he wasn't finished with his daily regimen. The young student set his feet shoulder-distance apart, drew his right foot back a bit, tightened his right fist close to the chest, and pointed his left fist out. This was the Emerald Fist, and so he began to shadowbox the wind.

That was precisely goo-boy's problem. He was just letting Fire-fists act without repercussion. Whether that goo was acidic or adhesive didn't matter if it never touched the opponent. He needed to draw a series of rings or something, to force Fire-fists to jump several times, then catch him in the air where he couldn't redirect his movement. It was his best bet, he just wasn't seeing it. Perhaps he was caught up in his own head, getting in his own way? It happened often. Those uninitiated in combat watched a more experienced opponent move, and froze up, telling themselves it wasn't fair or that the fight was impossible. You had to break through that negative self-talk, or you would learn nothing.
Then Natsumi asked about his mother. She was his kryponite in a way. Farrin loved bragging about his Mum. She was one of the fastest heroes out there, but her passing was also a source of immeasurable pain. Pain he didn't much like to talk about except with Sada. Still, mama O'Rourke hadn't raised a liar.
"Nah. She went down swingin' though. Died makin' sure an incredibly powerful n' malicious villain was put behind bars," he managed with a smile, proud of her even still.
Proud because the villain she had apprehended was none other than his father, her husband, who possessed a quirk nearly unrivaled in strength, but there was no lie in leaving that little detail out. That secret belonged to him and only an extremely small handful of others. That fecker was a hero too, but he had turned for reasons Farrin didn't understand even still, and it was up to ol' Mum to take him down. She did, but not before he killed countless heroes and civilians, her included. Together though, they had worn him out, and the last few heroes of that battle managed to take him down. Good riddance to that bastard.
"I dun' think ol' goo-spit is changin' his act anytime soon. C'mon, let's grab a bite."

Farrin had no clue why it was happening, but as he approached Leo his speed drastically fell and his blood boiled. It didn't stem only from his mind now, but something deeper. Antithetical. Unnatural. Like the threads of time itself had been thrown into choler.
"Oi! Lad! Have we e'er met before university?" Farrin called out, breaking through the heavy soup of disturbed time or whatever the hell was weighing him down, and closing in on Leo.
Small talk had no place between them. Farrin had questions. He hoped Leo had answers. Defy time, break it all you want, it had plans for the two of them and that plan was tying their threads together in quite the knot. They were bound to one another by nature beyond comprehension. It was up to them to figure it out.
Half of his mind still beckoned for violence. The need to protect people from the potential danger Leo represented. The problem was, that danger only existed in mystifying dreams and whispers. It didn't help that they were accompanied by just as many enigmas that pushed him to befriend the boy. Which was it going to be? He hadn't decided yet. How could he? He barely knew the lad, and no searing sensation at the back of the brain would see him break somebody without tangible cause first.
"Yuh' hear me?" He shouted, the distance closed, Farrin drawing up at Leo's side, "have we e'er met before?"

It inched across the massive metropolis's many alleyways, between buildings packed too closely together. Not every alley, mind you, but Farrin may as well have been lingering through the dead of night while on his search. Barty, one of the heroes of the Above & Beyond agency and also Farrin's guardian in Japan, hadn't specified which cafe he was looking for - had challenged Farrin to find his target. And who might that be? A hero that once went by the Symbol of Strength. In another time, in another tale, Oberon went by the Symbol of Heroism. Who better to help the Farrin of here and now to ascend to such heights than the Symbol of Strength?
The clouds were coming in, a light storm on approach, but a little rain wouldn't deter him. Farrin had made it into UAU to train with the best, and he had found more than enough challenge among the university's pro-hero educators, many of which he asked for personal training spars with on his first week, but there weren't too many among his peers that presented a challenge. While UAU was at the tippy top of heroics education, it didn't hurt to look beyond the school's walls for help. This apparent "God of the Black Sand" seemed to be the best place to start.
Wading through the building fog, Farrin found an alley not entirely taken by the growing dark nor bombarded by the fluorescents of so many other hole-in-the-wall establishments. It was also perfectly devoid of said establishments. There were a few tables and chairs set out and above them a sign that read "The Noyote." Larger than its competition down the other alleyways but not too large.
So, Farrin set down the path and entered the establishment. Maybe it was the tug of an Oberon of another time leading him to another heroic symbol, maybe it was gut instinct. One way or another, it would become apparent that he chose the right place. It still felt foreign to him, like it belonged to someone else entirely. Someone far more capable. He would become that someone, no matter what it took. Without another word, he was off.

When reached the first disaster before the others. It wasn't long before they arrived. As fast as he was, he couldn't be in three places at once. Miroru was off to the smoking building. It was the most sensible choice given her quirk and the potential presence of fire. That left the car pool and the vandals. Another sensible split.
"Leavin' the thugs ta' you, Ironclad. If yuh' need help, I'll be there soon 'nuff. If not, I'll check on Miroru."
Her analysis was correct. She might be able to get them out of immediate danger with ease, but Farrin could get them out and to safety fastest. It was the most efficient use of time. As the team's flex, it was important he tackle challenges the others couldn't accomplish with the same haste, so as to remain better positioned to support them or tackle whatever newest challenges came their way.
A semi-translucent emerald field umbrella'd the pit, slowing the torrential downpour and the rate at which the pool filled. Farrin wasn't the greatest swimmer, but he wasn't terrible either. He dove into the waters and sped first toward the cars with robotic dummies still inside. Miroru's light indicated two trapped in the cars, three (actors) atop their vehicles. Even partly submerged, tearing the doors off wasn't too problematic. What cost Farrin the most time was swimming the dummies back to "shore." The cars were sinking, so with a wave of the hand they too were covered in emerald fields, slowing their passage through time. One by one Farrin would swim to each car, and lob the actors toward the dummies, catching them in slow fields while allowing those fields wrapped around their cars to collapse. In all of a few minutes, he swam back to shore and caught each of the actors out of the air. Now, he just needed to run them back to the starting point, which was designated a safe zone, then get back into the field. A friend had told him. Just not this him. And not this friend. "Like I said, bunch o' shite, lass. Just sputterin' up nonsense sittin' at the back o' the brain. Dun' know where it came from." She wouldn't understand. Nobody did. Time played favorites, and those favorites lived on islands with a population of one. But that was the truth laid bare as could be. It sprung up from his dark well, and those were waters he was not yet prepared to dive.
"Yeah, can't imagine they'd turn away someone wit' a quirk like yers," he replied, the potential implications flying far over his head, "but there's nothin' that sorta springboarded yuh' this way? School seems quite the destination fer the traumatized," himself included, "like a bunch o' people that feel the only way they can make somethin' in 'emselves right is by helpin' others."
Maybe he was projecting. He hadn't spoken to all that many of his peers after all, especially not on topics so deep, but rumors spread across campus like wildfire. Every student that spoke up tossed another piece of bark in the inferno's path and kept it going. Sad stories. Sadder souls. All looking to mend the world, and themselves, at the same time.
"Heh, I sure hope not," he slipped. His mother was amazing. His father was horror incarnate. Fifty-fifty odds weren't all that great, and if time had told him anything, his odds favored villainy over heroism. "No rap sheet but, as I said, things went awry. It's complicated. Some good. Some bad. It - it is in me' blood. That's part o' it, but what I learned from both the good n' the bad is that if yuh' have the power ta' help people n' stop 'em from hurtin', yuh' probably should. Ta' salve one's pain is priceless ta' those that've been hurt."
Hero work was responsive work. Most of the victims of villain attacks were dead or running, so maybe he couldn't save all those that would be hurt, but he could limit the potential pain by saving those he could. It was close enough. Pain was absolute shite, and he would save people from it however possible.
"Absolutely. I dun' half arse anythin' I'm serious about. Whole arse or no arse. 'Sides, Who better ta' bring that biggest bads o' the world ta' slumber than Oberon." The name still didn't sit right on his tongue. Oberon wasn't him. Oberon was the hero of those dreams that cast the darkness aside and rose a herald of the light. A hero nigh unrivaled. That wasn't him. He was a student that dumpster dove for breakfast just a few years ago and nicked the closest wallet for lunch. "If it's me at the top, n' I've earned it, then nobody else needs ta' get hurt," he said with words blanketed by sincerity.
