That meant more than a score of quirks out in the world. Over-reliance on a single strength, like one's quirk, often molded the most rigid of minds. Why choose to be stone when water was so much more powerful? As strong as Chronokinesis was, Farrin didn't need it to be an absolute menace to many of among their peers. Why? Dedication to his craft, and the discipline Barty instilled in him.
"I dun' mean literally," he laughed, "I just mean ta' punch as if that's yer objective. That's the sort o' force yuh' need ta' tell yerself ta' muster, if yer just tryin' ta' trounce some deadly opposition. Shoot fer the stars n' yuh' may land on the moon n' all that. N remember, while I'm promotin' self sufficiency 'ere, wit' some gear yuh' very may well end up punchin' through walls. No doubtin' yerself n' where yuh' might go."
Before long their little training session was winding down though. At the very least, he had armed the unquirked girl with some basics. Whether or not anything came of it was entirely up to her. With enough practice, she could become quite the threat even without a quirk. Slap some gear on her and maybe some of those weapons she leaned on, as long as she maintained her fundamentals, that mix could become quite potent. Powerful enough to contend with many of their quirked-up peers.

A cornered cat is the most dangerous. True, but Farrin's remained confident in fire-fists. Ferocity was powerful but cumbersome. Unwieldly. Discipline, however, was a most reliable tool. Guaranteed to get results in most situations. Desperation grew from fear, and fear was a distraction. One more enemy to contend with in the middle of a bout. Discipline was fear's enemy. It kept the beast caged and assured its wielder could act with precision and confidence. Just as fire-fists would.
Fire-fists broke left and sprinted toward the ring of goo. He leaped into a cartwheel over the green muck, and when his hands were just about to make contact with the ground, the flames erupted, giving him just enough propulsion to cross the distance unscathed and land within goo-for-spit's defensive line. It was close quarters again, and that's where fire-fists shined. He threw a right jab and caught goo-for-spit once again, knocking the student to the ground. Another point in his favor.
"He needs ta' think quicker on his feet. Distance doesn't guarantee safety."
Tough competition? He wouldn't have it any other way. There was a reason he challenged both Leonid and Dauntless, some of UAU's strongest pro-hero professors, in his first week. There were few else with which to take his measure. Though he had lost on both accounts, each professor was forced to fight for their win. He wouldn't have anyone, not even UAU's grand educators, outpacing him with the wheels on. That was week one. Where would he be a year from now?
"Wouldn't have it any other way," he shot back.
Natsumi's story was in some ways similar to his own. There was a definitive lack of homelessness and she didn't pose one of her parents as entirely batshite crazy, but there was a parental call to a greater purpose.
"So yuh' dun' belong ta' the trauma club?" He joked. Kind of. How many students in UAU, including himself, were also here due to unresolved trauma they felt they could only compensate for by fighting for others? Bet you could count the students without some sort of loss on a single hand. "On a more serious note, I guess me' story is a little similar. Me Mum was a hero back home. Kinda followin' in her footsteps, tryin' ta' do right by people."
There was more to it than that, but he was sure Natsumi was being a little light on the details of her own story as well. How many out there were so quick to spill the spoilers of all their story's pages? Not many.

Something wearing oneself down seemed to proportionally improve the taste of the water. Yeah, sure, it was a mostly tasteless liquid, but tell that to someone who ran a few dozen miles in minutes or lifted a truck's worth of weight over their head a hundred times and see what they had to say about it. Guarantee they opt for some freezing water over anything else. Science be damned, it tasted better.
The frigid liquid went down his gullet and permeated his tense form. Rain to stamina's seed. Rejuvenating. Replenishing. The battery was charged and Farrin was about ready to take off again. That was, until the nail was hammered into his head. Searing heat splurged out in every direction behind his brain. That's how it felt. He had only felt this sensation once before, and the moment his gaze rose from the ground below his feet to the track he knew its source.
The words whispered in his ears spoke with as much vigor as venom. Buddy. Break. Friend. Foe. Recover. Ruin. All of it mixed and congealed in a massive mess then splattered against the wall of the time-turner's eardrum. Even his most prized confidant, his gut instincts, betrayed him. Half of him felt like wrapping his arms around his classmate, like a friend he hadn't seen in years, and the other half felt like punching him square in the nose. But why?
He knew why. He saw when they made contact in the dorms. Someone that looked just like the boy, but white whiter hair, running so fast that everything around them shattered. Was it a dream? Was it the future? Had it somehow been the past? He had nothing. Only a profound lack of understanding, and the need to know to more.
So Farrin dropped his water bottle flat on the floor, kicked up Chronokinesis - then ran onto the track.

While their proctor spoke, Farrin stood, arms crossed, still as stone. He had run simulations like this back in Hero Prep, but was warned that UAU would turn things up to eleven. Good. The challenge might do him some good. How was Sada doing with her exam? And Kenta?
Farrin hopped in place a few times, then threw a few jabs out against the air. He had to clear his mind of such distractions. This exam was demand his best, and he intended to give it. That meant limbering up.
It was only the fox's words that stole him from his short exercise. The exam actually pitted students against each other in a way. There were only so many potential threats to prove oneself against, but if they sought out each and every variable and saw them squared out, all three should pass, right? Besides, cooperation was far more heroic than competition against one's allies in the field. Oh, it was his turn now, wasn't it?
"Sorry, lass. No lasers or lightning. I can speed things up, includin' meself n' others if they stay close, n' slow other things down," he didn't explain the nature of his quirk, but that wasn't necessary to form their strategy. "Aside from me' quirk, I'm pretty strong n' can go toe ta' toe wit' some o' the best in a brawl. I should be a flex. I guarantee I can reach some o' the civvies n' get 'em ta' safety fastest, but can also keep the bads attention on meself n' do some real damage if they prove too numerous or strong." Farrin rolled his shoulders and leaned his head from one side to the other, cracking his neck. "How 'bout I start on ahead, I'll tackle whatever I see first just ta' start clearin' some objectives, whether that's villains or civvies. You start as proposed, workin' rescue angle n' light up anyone that yuh' might need help wit' or areas where there are too many fer one person," he said pointing to Miroru, then shifted to Johanna "n you start wit' villains since yuh' can armor up. I'll try ta' keep track o' yuh' in case yuh' find any villains that hit too hard or yuh get overwhelmed. This way we've one person dedicated ta' each o the bigger tasks, n' me speed will let me bounce between yuh as needed. When we see the bigger bads, we all come together ta' trounce 'em." That was a mouthful.
If everyone was in agreement, and there were no further questions, Farrin would bounce in place two more times before firing up the Chronokinetic powers. White wisps would roll off his form, emerald energy would crackle around him, and his ruby eyes would shift into golden clock dials as time made itself visibly manifest. Then, he would speed off starting the exam.

Discipline molded his every move. Where once he was a scavenger on the streets, now he was a war machine in a boy's body. A strict training regimen sculpted the jab he threw, focus guided his fists, and ceaseless training built the power behind his blows. Yet, he was only partway up the mountain. The peak was not yet in sight. He couldn't slow down. Not now.
Auden's arrival drew Farrin from his focus. A left jab cut to an immediate stop. He faced his classmate, though he was hopping in place still, remaining limber. "Yup. That's me. Farrin, Farrin O'Rourke," he said with a nod. "I'm guessin' that makes yuh' Auden Verchetty? Nice ta' meet yuh. Looks like we're teammates fer' this little exercise. Mind if I ask yuh' what yer quirk is? Would be fer' the best so we know what each of us can do. I can speed things up n' slow em' down, includin' myself n' you if yer relatively close by."
Though Farrin avoided the specific nature of his quirk, he had conveyed the basics. Ultimately, that was what Chronokinesis did. He stopped hopping as well, holding a hand out to shake. Wouldn't want to be rude. His Mum would not have approved of a disrespectful introduction.
"I think it best we start by splittin' up. Cover more ground. I could throw a large, tinted emerald field in the air above me' position ta' signal yuh' if I find the bomb, do yuh' have anythin' yuh' can do ta' signal me if yuh' find it first?"

[attr="class","Farrin"] [attr="class","KC1"] [attr="class","FarrinBG"] [attr="class","FarrinTop"] [attr="class","FarrinContent"] The skies were clear, the sun hung high, and a slight breeze graced the city streets just enough to keep it cool, but without requiring anyone wear a hoodie. Was this good enough a reason to part from campus and the vigorous training required of hero academia? Probably not, but Farrin had been encouraged to spend time with others so that's what he did. Today he was exploring Bunkyo City, home of the Tokyo Dome - a massive stadium the local council saw to retrofit and refurbish time and time again. As old as the stadium was, it looked brand spanking new. Impressive really.
The time-turner's eyes were locked on the six-story complex. Apparently, it could house up to seventy thousand people during concerts. Forty thousand or so for sports events. Way too many people.
"Wonder what the highlights are," Farrin posed, still about three blocks away from the dome.
UAU's sports festival outranked event he Olympics in popularity these days. Remarkable as the structure was, how did they continue to operate when almost all sports were on the decline in favor of those that included quirks, which were usually hosted by the world's various hero universities courtesy of their massive budgets and absurd amounts of space. UAU held both Grounds Gamma and Beta within its campus, each of which was like a small city unto themselves. Still, physical competition and all that. It was worth checking out what went down in the dome these days. Maybe something interesting was coming up? Sports weren't really an interest to Farrin, but competition of all sorts held some appeal. Battle of body or mind. If it put two or more parties against each other, it most likely shared some sort of overlap, if only philosophically, with a scrap. Who knew, he might even find a new hobby.

Wouldn't mind some company." Once it became clear Natsumi knew her way around a scrap, Farrin's interest shot up. The girl had just earned herself a few points in his book. Unlike her, however, Farrin was wholly invested in a good fight - so long as nobody was truly in danger. He sought to master the art of the scrap.
Natsumi was right, though. Goo-for-spit launched his gurgling green projectile from center to left, limiting fire-fist's options, but it did in fact leave the former's right exposed. Fire-fists closed the distance and landed the first meaningful blow of the match, launching his opponent toward the edge of the arena.
"Yeah, if I were a bettin' man, my money would be on ol' fire-fists. Far more disciplined."
It was a rather tame match. Once spit-for-goo got up, both combatants approached the center of the arena to start from a neutral position. A real fight lacked such allowances and consideration. Still, it gave goo-for-spit another chance at keeping distance. In a real fight, fire-fists could have closed the distance while his enemy was down and unloaded on him. That would've ended things rather quickly.
"Right yuh' are. Guess yer lookin' at yer' competition then, because Oberon," he didn't say the name out loud often. Despite his success, had he truly earned it yet? "Will be no' only the nation's but the world's number one hero."
Hunger was warring with his interest in the match still. Goo-for-spit was performing far better in round two. A line of defense had been spat around him. Whether that goo was acidic, adhesive, or poisonous, Farrin didn't know, but it was clear fire-fists wasn't trying to find out. Who could blame him? Still, defensive strategies always lost to offense eventually. Could be now, could be some time down the line, but offensive techniques and technologies always took the day.
"Moved ta' Japan about four years ago," he answered, still eyeing the match. "Spent me' first year gettin' accustom ta' the place, then the followin' three in a Hero Prep school. Now I'm 'ere. How 'bout yerself? How'd yuh find yerself attendin' one o' the world's greatest hero universities?"

Few were the individuals the time-turner was actually happy to see. He could likely count them on a single hand. Sada, his Nan, maybe Barty, and Kenta. Four. Yup. One hand was all it took. He even had a digit to spare.
"Heyyy, how yuh' doin', boyo? Was the trip 'ere easy enough fer' yuh?" Farrin started throwing his hand out to lock with one of Kenta's and then pulling him in for the old NYer bro-hug. Didn't matter that Kenta wasn't from the States, he was getting the bro-hug. "Good ta' see yuh." Where Farrin had seen Sada just a few days prior, he hadn't seen Kenta since graduating from Hero Prep. Still not too long ago, but it was over a month. Look at them now, taking on one of the greatest hero universities around the world.
"Yuh need help carryin' anythin?" He offered.
Whether Kenta handed him a bag or not, Farrin would lead the duo through the gates and start down the path that would lead across the training fields and toward the dorms. The main lecture hall, UA's most recognized building, was dead ahead, but they would be looping around so Kenta could drop his stuff off before getting the full tour of the place. The campus was absolutely massive. The training fields were a mix of gravel and grass that expanded out toward the back of the walls. Beside those fields on one side were the aforementioned dorms, on the other were some of the indoor training facilities. Further out, beyond what the eye could see from the front gate were the paths that led to Grounds Beta & Gamma, which were like small cities in their own right. Farrin wasn't the biggest fan of academics, but UAU was packing.
"We're in the same dorm buildin'. I think yer on the second floor. I'm on the third," he explained as they began their trek.

He could keep this up for a while longer, but that didn't make it any less taxing. Few athletes operated at their maximum capacity for extended periods of time. It was the same with one's quirk. Farrin regularly sped past most of his peers quite easily and for quite a while, but he didn't maintain top speed the entire time. Against Leonid, he couldn't risk anything less. And his tactic had paid off.
Farrin's barraged went unmet. He wasn't only winning, he was winning handily. The danger was stacking, compiling, and compounding. Death by a thousand cuts and then some. The lighter blows were beginning to see the lion budge, and when the hard right landed against the hero's jaw, the beast staggered. Was it over? Would he tumble? No, it couldn't be that easy.
Leonid found his footing, but Farrin wouldn't give him the time to think, let alone act. Farrin burst forward, inbound on the target. He threw all his weight onto his left foot, then sprung forward with his right. A little Dempsey added to his Irish mix of martial arts. If the blow connected, even with the lion's core, it would be the hardest hit Farrin had thrown yet. A trigger step into the nastiest right Farrin had in him... but the attack never landed. A temporal warning flared in the back of the time-turner's brain. Danger. But it failed to reveal the nature of that danger, and Farrin wasn't sure how to defend.
A sonic boom burst in Farrin's ears and threw him back with sheer concussive force and that was just the beginning. Instantly, the time-turner's hands went up to his ears, shielding him as best he could from the ringing damage already dealt, but it left him exposed. When Leonid's landed, the crunch in Farrin's left arm was entirely drowned out by the crack of his back smashing through concrete. They were in the ruins zone, and just contributed quite a bit to the name. Farrin smashed through one of the walls of a half-destroyed building like a wet stone through tissue. The momentum dragged him through the building until the next well broke his "fall." A spiderweb of cracks spread across its surface, and the young student-hero immediately began coughing up a lung. The ringing in his ears would not relent, but his right arm had slung around his left, holding it up a bit. Was it broken or just horribly battered? It was too numb to move, that was for sure.
Farrin pressed his weight against the wall, pushing himself up to a stand. Chronokinesis was still active, but with wavering focus, he was starting to see things that weren't there. A dozen versions of this fight throughout time and the many ways it ended. He stumbled forward through visions superimposed in his sight and exited the building. His breath was heavy, but he had a mission to accomplish. A person he had to become. He had to keep moving forward.
"Alrighty then, teach," he muttered. Another fit of coughs came up. "Ready fer'... round three?"
His left arm slowly lifted but dropped like an anchor to his side, and finally, the student followed, landing on one knee. "Jus' give me' a sec," he coughed again, "I'll be right," he paused, seeing several of Leonid from across the time-scape. He was starting to sift. It was too difficult to concentrate with the damage done to his left side and the ringing in his head along with whatever damage was done upstairs considering his proximity to the blast that was the lion's roar.
"Right as rain."
He needed to get back up, but his body wouldn't respond. Not with sifting's effects still in his eyes. The spirit was willing, but both mind and body had taken a beating. Exhaustion had dragged him down. And below the layers of confidence, he was cursing himself for it. He had to become Oberon.

In the thousand-mile journey, Farrin stepped ten paces at a time. To aggressively pursue one's goals as if every breath might be their last, that's how he lived in another time, another story - he had seen it in his sifting dreams. This Farrin, the man standing here and now, had to live up to that. He had to become that hero. No challenge too difficult, no obstacle too great. There was only him and the person he needed to be. Dauntless was next measure to test himself with - and now he was charging.
Outside of his Temporal State, Chronokinesis actually drained Farrin of time, effectively slowing him down rather than speeding him. He could compensate, however, with the mutation aspect of his quirk. The world was a craw, where his reaction time was beyond human. Farrin's left fist chopped each of the coming jabs away, he stepped once to the left to avoid the shot to his core, then dipped below the kick sent his way.
Not it was his turn. His left arm pulsated. Even deflecting the blows, each hit felt more like stone than flesh cracking against his wrist and forearm. Still, it was time to press the offensive. Farrin fired off his own three-piece combo, all left jabs flying for various parts of the educator's core. He would side-step to the right, then throw a hard right cross, followed by a quick kick aimed for the hero's shin. Just enough to maybe draw out a reaction if it connected. The combo would end with another hard right thrown Dauntless's way, looking to expose the possible reaction from the kick.
Tangled up in a scrap, Farrin knew he could hold his own with the best, for a time at least. He was quite adept in the art of the brawl. Keep him from falling? No, the training wheels only ever got in his way. It was time to ride.

She was friendlier than most of their classmates. Even among the group of black sheep, he seemed to be collecting, only a few were outwardly nice. Most were respectful but reclusive. Distant. Sada was the warmest of the warm, but he couldn't hold everyone to such unsurmountable standards. Besides, she'd never admit she was nice. This Natsumi though, at first glance at least, seemed a decent sort.
"Tis' quite a view, can't deny that."
Of course, Farrin's insights were built upon the tactical advantage of such height and sight lines before the aesthetic appeal. The former was built into his bones now. Still, the latter was undeniable. The grassy hill cut just short of the closest sparring circle, which stretched on to the next and the next. Beyond that was the running track, the bleachers, and on each side of the field a training facility. Further out there was UA's main lecture hall and building, and off on the opposite end were the dorms. Life at UA, all visible from his grassy hill.
"Eh, I was trainin' just a bit ago. Decided it was time fer a short break." His stomach growled as if intentionally interrupting him. "N' probably gonna grab a bite soon."
Ruby eyes ran over the fields, watching as two students took up that sparring arena closest to the hill. It basically gravel with a few white lines painted around it to create a visible perimeter. Each sparring arena was rather large, likely to account for the potential areas of effect several quirks possessed. Luckily, it appeared neither of the combatants had particularly explosive abilities this time. One's fists set ablaze and the other emitted some sort of goo from their mouth. Wouldn't be fun to be caught in that.
"So what department yuh' in, Natsumi? Heroics? Support? One o' the others?"
Small talk was a bore, but proper engagement required knowing one's goals. Was she another among the school's ranks striving to be the world's greatest hero? Or was she an inventor trying to change society for the better through less direct means than criminal intervention? Both were noble goals, as were most of the other departments, but which department one was enrolled in told much of their story.

Sada was the spark that lit the flame in his soul. The warmest bastion amidst the many years in spent in a blizzard. Her tail warped around his waist was as natural as breathing. Any and all contact was his preference. The more they were connected, the better. His hand only abandoned hers to loop around her back and pull her even closer. Any distance was too much.
"Oh? N' what are we studyin'? Anatomy? Hands on I hope." He teased with a grin, his hand squeezing her side playfully.
He nodded along at Barty's mention. Yeah, the big grouch only meant well for Farrin. Sometimes the responsibilities thrust onto him resembled a cage. They weren't, he knew that. They were weights meant to make him stronger. Discipline. It was the number one thing Barty hammered into him during his tenure in the country. The results were beyond contestation. After all, he was lugging a mountain of luggage with one hand, and the other scooped his living sunshine on all rainy days.
"N' what if I want me' surprise now." He said more than asked, pulling her into him after that kiss to his neck so he could thrust his lips against hers again.
At this rate, it would take a few hours to reach the dorms. But, these were the only circumstances he would tolerate such time spent on something so simple because time with his Sada was never a waste. It was the most worthy exchange of time one could make. To be with the one you loved more than any.
He couldn't help but roll his eyes at her food choices. Sada's supermodel figure would not be jeopardized by a proper sandwich. She had a rocking body, but he detested that she half-starved herself. A starving belly was torture.
"Yuh' could try some chicken n' veggies, I promise yuh it won't ruin yuh. Yuh might e'en enjoy it n' feel a little more full."
Food was to be appreciated. A whole bunch of nothing for lunch with some sleep for dinner was hell. A hell she most certainly didn't deserve. She deserved the best and the best only. And he would always be by her side to make sure she got exactly that.
"Nope, it's you!"
And then they were lip-locked again. Who knew how much time went by or who saw them? That didn't matter. His Sada mattered. His arm held her right to him, and when they pulled apart, eyes lost in one another, her cute giggle escaping those perfectly pink lips, he kissed her again. Didn't know how to stop himself.
When they finally fixed themselves up and kept onward toward the dorm, he could only nod again as she mentioned her father. Maybe he wasn't the murderous psychopath Farrin's ol' bastard of a father was, but he was certainly neglectful and that was its own torture. One more to add to all the others she faced. All the tortures he would be sure to correct. Only the best, he repeated in his head. And he meant it. Whatever he couldn't do for her now, he would learn to. Anything and everything for the women that warmed his being and made a human out of the survival machine. Before her, there was only making it to tomorrow. Even his heroic aspirations felt like some built-in protocol he simply had to follow. With Sada, he felt. He was alive. The star around which his world orbited. She was his everything.
"Me too, I missed yuh'," he repeated, couldn't convey the truth of the sentiment enough. "I'm no' me without you."
Then they were in the elevator. We'll ignore how Mt. LuggageMore fit, but it made the perfect cover because the seconds the doors shut things got dangerous. A chronokinetic burst that enwrapped the both of them would make the seconds before they reached the second floor feel like minutes, minutes spent with Farrin picking his love up by the legs and pinning her into the side of the elevator. He kissed her ceaselessly, his lips were against hers one moment, then buried in her neck the next. They were sweeping rapids that crashed into one another. Passion, fire, and all things alive and good. He explored his love thoroughly but never stopped kissing her. And yet, by the time the elevator stopped, they were all set to continue to journey to her room - though perhaps a tad heavier on the breath. Farrin tugged the rope and the mountain it latched together down the hall and around the corner, his other hand still laced to Sada's, and then they were there. Her dorm room!

Mustering a temporal deceleration was like slowing one's pace while caught in the river current. Stasis, however, was more akin to willing the earth's waters into complete submission. If it was possible, he sure couldn't do it. Without stasis, he had to try slowing the air molecules caught in his field to a point of near-stasis, only then would he be able to step off of the field without passing through it. The exercise was not going quite as planned.
Farrin crashed for the umpteenth time. The air simply would not submit to his limited control over the temporal tides. This time, he crash hard on his side and rolled toward the bottom of his grassy hill, and out into the gravel of one of the training fields.
"God dammit, why the feck won't it work. It should work," he sighed, staring skyward toward the clouds.
It was taxing work and required far more of his mental resources than throwing up any other field due to the precise nature of the maneuver, but he couldn't quit now. So, Farrin pushed himself up off the ground and took to the top of the hill again. He kicked off the earth and into the sky. Though his eyes were locked on the heavens, his mind was just below his boot, focusing, willing, demanding the deceleration field that burned into being to wrestle the very air into static submission.
And it worked. Farrin was standing in the air. He could see the entirety of the field, and beyond. Everyone was going about their day, scurrying between the dorms and UAU's main lecture hall or the other training facilities. He saw a familiar face below too. Or, at this distance, it was more like familiar wings.
"Oi, hey there, la-"
The field collapsed, Icarus's wings burned away, and so Farrin went arse to grass again. Another tumble down the hill. This time he sort of rolled in Robin's direction though he hadn't crossed the full distance. The cut of his momentum was marked by a fit of coughs and his hand rubbing at his head, though, eventually, he would sit upward and look in the avian arsenal's direction.
"Eh, like I was sayin', hey there, lass. What're yuh' up ta out 'ere?"
