light glimmers in a flower, like jewels in a dream... ( a million miles away... come back, and stay ) Y’know, after over two straight years of being friends, you’d think Juju would be a little more used to Yaoyao’s particular brand of ‘I WILL either make you take care of yourself or do it FOR you since you’re incapable of it’ friendship.
No dice though. Juju still gets surprised about normal, mundane shit, like being dragged to a shoe store (to replace her raggedy-ass track shoes that are a few steps off from falling apart entirely), or being brought food (water, protein bars, some snacks Yaoyao made before they left the city), or even just being afforded basic decency (being slathered with sunscreen so that her pale, hermit, ginger ass won’t burn to a crisp in the thin mountain air this close to the cursed, stupid autumn sun).
Still. It’s… nice. Bein’ out of the city, out of the loud and the crowded and the smog. Bein’ out here with someone she likes as much as she likes Juju. Only thing that could’ve made it even better is if Baobao’d been able to tag along, but it’s okay. He’s busy, it’s only one weekend apart, and she’s the lucky biii… broad… with a monopoly on him most of the time anyway. One weekend won’t be the end of the world.
By the end of their hike, rounding the final bend, the sun’s slipping low on the horizon and Yaoyao’s gotten enough energy out that it’s Lili in the pilot’s seat, humming soft and sweet and hand in hand with Jun as they descend back into town. Maybe it’s odd still, for Jun, seeing such a different personality come over the tall, imposing frame that Yaoyao inhabits. Or maybe she’s used to it by now. Either way:
“It’s just about dinner time, now,” Lili notes, turning to offer Jun a smile. “Why don’t we go back and shower, rest a little, then see about finding something to eat when Yaoyao wakes up?”

[attr="class","body"] this is where the bruises come from this is where the game gets ugly.
Yaoyao’s officially having a shit day.
It started off pretty well, all things considered. Woke up, kissed her boyfriend good morning, made and ate breakfast with said boyfriend, made a couple jokes about skipping school and the sports festival together that they both knew weren’t gonna happen (baobao woulda been too anxious), hauled ass to campus for the sports festival, kicked some ass in capture the flag, and so on and so forth. And then her boyfriend got signed up for a buncha shit he didn’t wanna do, and won’t let her go punch in the faces of whoever’s responsible.
And now this.
Of all the events some idiot with a grudge could’ve signed her up for behind her back, it had to be the water one. Of course it had to be the fuckin’ water one.
Tanghulu — Hawthorne — wasn’t wrong. The guy doesn’t tend to be, sticks to facts, and hell, she usually likes that. Right now, though, just the sound of his voice (anyone’s voice, honestly) has her grinding her teeth, this close to the edge of lashing out at the next person to so much as sidle around her personal space. Yaoyao’s stone-still, staring down the rippling surface in front of ‘em all, and she’s… okay, yeah, she’s looking a little like she’s seen a ghost (pun intended). Pale in the face, white-knuckled fists, the whole nine yards.
Rain, she can do. A storm, a shower, a drizzle, whatever. Bathtubs are less pleasant, but she can handle ‘em. Same for ponds, puddles, what have you. This, though? This?
Yeah, no thanks. She’d rather drink acid.
Then some loudmouth breaks the spell. Shouts some nonsense and just - dives right on in, like it’s the easiest thing in the world, like Yaoyao doesn’t feel like she’s gonna be sick any seconds. Oh, she’s gonna kill whoever signed her up for this godforsaken—
But Lili wants to. Lili thinks this sounds fun. Lili wants to try, because she’s never gotten to do anything like this before, ‘cause she spent her childhood cooped up in a gilded cage and junior high in a body far too fragile to even imagine doing something as strenuous as all this, and Yaoyao, for better or worse, can’t say no when Lili longs for something quite so much as she longs for experiences like this. Only one condition: Yaoyao sure as shit isn’t going down there.
So it’s Lili who dives — lavender and smoke, wisping energy, sinking beneath the waves, while Yaoyao very, VERY reluctantly just… sits. Right there at the edge of the pool, feet in the water. The judges can kiss her ass — this is the best they’re gettin’.

Confession time: sometimes, on shitty, shitty days, Yaoyao thinks there’s no way Kei feels for her anything remotely close to what she feels for him. How could he? He’s sweet, normal, human, soft-hearted. Grounded. Real. Where she’s… y’know. Unnatural. Scary. Weird. A freak, an aberration, an unholy nightmare of evolution and maybe fucked up quirk science, too, if the flashes of distant memories she’s uncovering in “”””therapy”””” can be trusted (jury’s still out). All that ’n hell in a hand-basket for a personality, too. Makes perfect sense that she can’t love normal. Makes perfect, perfect sense that no rational, reasonable, normal human being would be able to match her, crazy for crazy.
Then, sometimes, Kei looks at her just so, or says somethin’ just so, or does somethin’ just so — and she feels her insides melt. Warm and gooey and soft and molten, like the center of a little lava cake done just right.
Times like this, especially:
my baobao 🐧💛🩵💙 [ received ] yaoyao!! can you come to the lab for a sec? I wanna show you something!
Okay, yeah, it doesn’t take much. She’s a little whipped. So sue her. Anyway — when her baobao calls, his Yaoyao answers. Not like she wasn’t gonna swing by his lab at the end of the day anyway, to pick him up and walk his cute ass home; if anything this just gives her an excuse to see him even sooner. And who’s she to look a Kei-related gift horse in the mouth?

[attr="class","body"] this is where the bruises come from this is where the game gets ugly.
So. The situation: Juju’s been down in the dumps since the end of the Sports Festival. Yaoyao knows why, and it’s for sure an infuriating can of worms, and it will be dealt with. But not while they’re out here on their girls’ trip. Nah, this weekend is for one thing and one thing only only, and it’s called Operation: Get Juju to Cheer the Fuck Up. (Lili doesn’t think they should be calling it that, but as far as Yaoyao’s concerned, it’s simple, clear, self-explanatory, and not written down anywhere. So what’s not to like?)
The plan: drive out Friday afternoon after their last respective classes and arrive in the late afternoon. Spend the weekend exploring the town and the area, having fun, relaxing (if Juju can manage it). A little working out or training, ‘cause god knows Juju might get antsy if they don’t. Then, Sunday afternoon, drive back to the city so Jun can do her prep for the school week and not gnaw Yaoyao’s head off about not having enough time to plan out her workaholic weekly training hours or whatever.
Anyway, they’ve got the whole weekend off for this. So here they are, on a bright ‘n sunny Friday afternoon, stretching their legs in the clear mountain air. Speaking of stretches…
Yaoyao rises out of the stretch she was in (feet set wide apart, legs straight, one hand on her hip and the other above her head, bent sideways at the waist) and cracks her knuckles. “Your choice, Juju. We can either go check out the local bookstore, or check out the trails.” Only… Juju’s debatably dressed for hiking. Yaoyao, in her black cargo pants and stringy black skull crop top and sneakers, is only a little better off. And they’re not going hiking without sunscreen, water, and a protein bar or three in a bag for Juju.

light glimmers in a flower, like jewels in a dreeam... ( a million miles away... come back, and stay ) To see Jun at work is always something of a wonder. She’s so smart, and her mind works in such fascinating ways, and she’s observant and quick to act and comes up with such creative ideas. It’s no hardship to let her take the lead at all; to simply listen and nod and trust in Jun’s decisions. To pull back with her precious cargo, to sweep the nomu off the path across the acid lake below, to deliver that poor man to someone who’d see him safely away from the battlefield. But this newest order — that gives her pause, just a little. The white and the green ones? Lili turns her head, eyeing the two large creatures. She’s not quite nervous, can’t hardly feel it at least, but she doesn’t like the look of those things all the same. She likes the idea of willingly bringing Jun closer to them even less. But Jun’s orders have so far proven sound, so… and Lili will protect her. Must protect her. If she doesn’t, she has no right to call herself Jun’s friend, human or shadow or otherwise. Lili takes a breath, even though she doesn’t actually need to breathe in this form, and nods. “Alright. How close will we need to be?” There’s another thing, something needling at the back of her mind. An idea, sparked by something Jun had said. Something about turning the colorful monsters against each other… Ah! There’s a brief flare of alarm through her bond with Yaoyao at the thought that strikes her— alarm, and then concern, and indignation. Don’t do anything stupid, Lili, Yaoyao warns - by which Lili knows she means anything that involves Lili recklessly and unnecessarily putting herself in harm's way - but Lili is already speaking. “Jun, I - do you know that old Spanish tradition of bulls and red flags and matadors? It was a cruel tradition, but maybe it could work here? That is to say-“ She takes in another big breath that isn’t truly necessary, but it does help her brace herself. “My form like this, it’s… I can control how tangible I am. What I mean is: if I attract the yellow one’s attention and guide it to aim at one of the other colorful ones, and went intangible before its cube touched me — that is — do you think that would work?”
TL:DR; - Lili does whatever Jun tells her to, but hesitates at the idea of actively bringing her closer to a big threat - She agrees, reluctantly, anyway - Lili also suggests essentially using herself as a target to bait the Yellow Nomu into shooting those evisceration cubes at the other colorful big guys @ the local chaos crew [googlefont="Roboto"][newclass=.body b]color:#5a43d2[/newclass]

In all her proportions, she is exactly what may come to mind when you think of the word ‘petite’: short, dainty, fragile-looking. Whether serving as Yaoyao’s lavender shadow or not, she carries herself just the same: chin down, shoulders slightly hunched, fingers most often nervously fiddling with each other or clasped tightly in front of her. She was born in Wuhan, China, moved to Medellin, Colombia when she was 10 years old, and moved to Japan when she was 15. Fukuoka for high school where she met her current boyfriend, and then Tokyo for university. As far as her opinion goes, that’s all you need to know. Of course, you can ask. Yaoyao has few soft spots, and any chinks that do exist in her armor are tucked safely behind boundaries guarded by towering walls, steel wires, and vicious dogs even quicker to bite than the mistress herself. Which is a statement in and of itself. And that’s if she deigns to decide you’re worth the time and effort of letting you talk to her in the first place, which… unless there’s something of import or interest to her involved, people seldom are. All in all, just one of the leading mythic b-----s of UA university, back for another year of terrorizing teachers and raising hell. No ‘misunderstood jerk with heart of gold and more to them than meets the eye’ nonsense going on here. …. light glimmers in a flower, like jewels in a dreeam... ( a million miles away... come back, and stay ) In her human body, Lili will never be healthy in the way that Yaoyao is healthy. She tires quickly and needs some kind of mobility aid if she plans to go very far. She catches cold every time one of Yaoyao’s coworkers does, even if Yaoyao never catches it herself and washes her hands with more religious devotion than she shows to any actual deity. On bad days, Lili’s limbs still go numb or burn with pain. But for all the chaos of current circumstances — for all the adrenaline, and the panic, and the danger, and the terror that would surely grip her were she human — somehow, she still finds a moment to feel relief. What a blessing, to have this form of shadows and lavender, unbound by the earth’s gravity or any of the ailments that plague her frail, useless humanity. What a blessing, to be able to soar overhead of obstacles in her path, or even directly through them, with but a thought. What a blessing, to be useful. What a blessing, to be strong. What a blessing, to be able to make a difference — and to help the people she loves most dearly. “Jun!”The first and most important order of business upon Lili’s arrival in the South Wing: to find, and save, Junsuina Kanjo. Lili soars beneath the bridges, and— there! Quickly, but carefully, she hovers at Jun’s side, arms outstretched toward her, cradling and then lifting her. “Yaoyao’s still stationed in the West, but - I’m here. Are you hurt? What do you need? Put me to use, I'll follow your lead.”@ the local chaos crew [googlefont="Roboto"][newclass=.body b]color:#5a43d2[/newclass]

[attr="class","body"] this is where the bruises come from this is where the game gets ugly.
“--No, I’m not. I'm dangling some ten-ish meters above a lake of acid, and my only anchor points are monsters that reflect quirks. Please tell me Yaoyao is okay, I have a lot to worry about right now.”
Oh, that’s not good.
No kidding.
Yaoyao hauls herself to her feet, using the shadow of Lili’s lavender form as an anchor. It takes a second to blink the water out of her eyes, wipe her dripping wet hair back out of her face (and to drag it back into a hair-tie, on second thought). Once that’s done, though, and she gets a grip on the situation around them with her own two eyes, Lili’s soothing, distanced calm is one hell of a boon. If it weren’t for that… in circumstances like these, even Yaoyao might panic. One thing’s for sure: they need a plan.
There’s a teacher down (and isn’t that a nice gut-punch of guilt right there), their fastest fighter’s bawling over what absolutely isn’t Kei’s dead body and sure as shit isn’t ‘Sada’’s (whoever that is), there’s somebody holding back a water giant on their own, and Ice Queen’s throwing her all into stopping them but there’s still more impostors trying to drag people into the deep.
And Jun.
Jun needs them. Needs someone, and whoever the hell is with her over there, they aren’t known to Yaoyao or Lili, which means there’s no one they can for sure count on to help her, put her first, keep her safe.
Shit.
I’ll help Jun.
Yaoyao tenses her jaw. That’s - far. Sure, Lili’s been testing the limits of their range on those walks she ’n Kei make her go on to stretch her legs, but this far? She doesn’t know if they’ve ever been that far apart before. Doesn’t know if they can get that far apart. If they can pull this off, it might mean - it might mean everything. Fuck it. Jun needs help now, and every split second wasted on what-ifs makes all the difference.
Alright. Go. But first: grab Teach, drop us by the exit ‘porter. I’ll. I’ll try to stop the bleeding. If I can.
God, she hopes she can. It’s the least Yaoyao can do. What an idiot, for losing it this early in the game; she should’ve waited til she had the bitch who stole Kei themselves in her sights. She can’t say sorry, not with this shitty metal bit in her mouth, but. She can try to fix what she broke. (Idiot, idiot, idiot.)
Lili, bless her for being herself, does as Yaoyao asks without a word. Doesn’t try to make her feel better, doesn’t try to shift the blame. She knows well as Yaoyao does that nothing’d make this better right now and it’s not the time to try. Her goodbye, as she deposits Yaoyao ’n Phantasmagoria by the teleporter and gently ‘sends’ the doppelgänger in her grasp ‘to sleep’ (knows it out and binds it in metal cables), is just a gentle brush over Yaoyao’s wet hair; ‘cause it isn’t goodbye, not really, even if the anxiety Yaoyao’ll never admit to is already gnawing away at her stomach. It’s just a see you soon.
Alright. Here’s hopin’ the rest of the crew can handle their own for a sec, because first thing’s first: making sure Teach is still breathing. Then to get wrapping that wound… long as Teach doesn’t mind it’s tended to by the same wretched hands that caused it.
TL:DR; — Lili ties up the doppelganger they were dealing with, then drops Yaoyao and Lucille by the teleporter — Lili leaves for the South Wing — Yaoyao is trying to staunch the bleeding from Lucille’s wound that Yaoyao herself inflicted and feelin’ bad for causing, it gang! — While Lili's in the south, Yaoyao will not post more + will make no new actions. About as functional as Rahul's bunnies <3

[attr="class","body"] this is where the bruises come from this is where the game gets ugly.
Here’s the thing about loving someone. When you really, really love them - when they make a home in your heart - it means that they leave a hollow space behind when they’re gone. A ruined, vulnerable mess. The perfect place for someone to harm you; to sink their claws in and tear. To love someone that much is to have them be your kryptonite. And as any old comic nerd worth their salt knows (or someone who just happens to be real close friends with such a nerd) kryptonite doesn’t just make you weak. It doesn’t just make you hurt. It’s agony. It hits you like a shock of ice water to the veins, and then it burns like acid going down.
And it just might make you look death in the face and accept it, just so long as it’s at that person’s hands
YAOYAO, NO!
There’s this strange distance to existence, when you’re a shadow and a thought. The world doesn’t disappear, no, she can still see, hear, think, feel. But it’s different. Muted. The colours are less bright, the sounds resonate like an echo in nonexistent ears, the smells are fainter, turning into subtle suggestions; joy, sorrow, frustration, excitement, all dialed down to the lowest possible setting before there’s nothing at all. It’s like living life through a grey veil that dilutes everything beyond it, or watching the world from beneath the surface of a lake. Of course, it’s a price she’s willing to pay for Yaoyao’s happiness - the least she can do, after all they’ve been through - and a fate she’s long since made her peace with, but it’s still not something Lili would wish on anyone if she could help it.
She’s never been so grateful for it, ever, in her life. Because as Yaoyao’s heart cracks open, and her mouth forms around the name of the person Lili knows Yaoyao loves more than life itself—
Lili’s mind is clear. Where there should be shock, and grief, and heartbreak, there is only the vague suggestion of emotions that (were she currently human) might just be enough to split her soul clean in two. Where there are hands wrapped around her other half’s throat, and she knows what Yaoyao is seeing — where Lili herself sees viridian eyes and sunset hair and another dear, beloved face — there is only the chilling knowledge that this cannot be real.
It cannot be true that the body attempting to drag them into the depths belongs to Kei and Jun simultaneously. Distant from the world and her heart, as if watching it from the other side of an screen on the other side of the world, she looks and knows only this: if it can’t be, it most likely isn’t.
Lavender shadows flower out around them in the depths, wisps shaping into hands and prying this person - this impostor — away. Yaoyao has gone numb, and Lili can feel the toll of her rage and the shock, the bruises forming around her neck and the pressure of the water all around them, how it creeps up the spine like a curse. They need to get out of the water. And Lili — Lili shouldn’t have sat back, shouldn’t have waited, shouldn’t have simply clung to the belief that Yaoyao would make sure things worked out no matter how lost in rage and fear she was. Shouldn’t have relied on her, still, to protect them both.
Perhaps… Perhaps Lili has become too comfortable in the passenger seat. Perhaps it’s time she protects Yaoyao back.
They break from the water, haloed by lavender shadows, Yaoyao’s stunned form cradled in one lilac arm and the doppelgänger bound and wrapped up in another, and find chaos.
Five more Jun lookalikes - to Lili at least - and five reasons for Yaoyao to jerk, briefly, just the once, before she shakes her head, coughs up water, and digs her hand into the lavender apparition holding her tight. Here above the water, high in the air, at least they have the distance to look, to see, and be out of reach. Just a moment to breathe. Lili lends Yaoyao her vision, shares what she sees:
A teacher collapsed, a time-turner cradling a ginger body but crying the wrong name, and, overlapping with Yaoyao’s own vision, more Juns (rather than Keis) than should be physically, scientifically, quirklessly possible.
And Yaoyao stills.
The rage is still pounding through her, but it’s - it’s easier now. To think. Funny to think that she hates being submerged so much, but getting dunked against her will actually helped clear her head.
That’s… ‘S not baobao.
No, jie. I don’t think it is. I’m sorry. But - we will find him, okay?
‘S not Juju either.
It can’t be, but… we can check. The radio, remember?
Yeah. Yeah, let’s - let’s radio.
Somewhere in the south, a radio clicks to life.
“Jun? It’s Lili. Are you there? Are you - okay? Please?”
TL:DR; — Yaoyao freezes when ‘Kei’ appears and lunges, and due to her state is in no way equipped to handle the shock or process it, and is successfully plunged into the water — Lili has a clear head and is distanced from emotion since she’s a shadow rn, so she clocks that something can’t be right and kicks herself into gear — takes over the shadows (which makes them turn wispy lavender) and frees Yaoyao, then hauls both Yaoyao and the doppelgänger out of the water and high into the air for a vantage point/breather — Lili sees what’s going on down below, namely Lucille being collapsed and Farrin knelt over what he thinks is Sada. Lili then shows Yaoyao, through their connection, how while Yaoyao sees Kei, Lili sees Jun. — Yaoyao, having been snapped out of it enough to think thanks to the impromptu bath, though still slightly out of it from the shock, also realizes the Keis/Juns/Sadas can’t be real, but isn’t yet in any shape to do anything about it. Give her a sec 🫡 — Lili uses the radio to contact Jun, who’s in the South, to confirm her status.
aren't we all just having such a good time [googlefont="Roboto"][newclass=.body b]color:#5a43d2[/newclass]

“Baobao, ah, baobao.” She wraps an arm around him and presses a cheek against the top of his head, still laughing a little. “In your real, real weak defense, he did only try it in the one language. Two languages short of anything that’d get through to that thick, beautiful, incredibly capable, incredibly dense brain of yours.” It’s a 2-for-1 joke (just like her life); poking fun at her baobei’s incredible obliviousness, and also calling back to the fact that when they got together in high school… she had to tell him in three entire different languages — Mandarin, Sign, and Japanese — before it’d dawned on him what she was saying.
Ah, good memories. Good times.
The shadows are still dutifully at work, turning dango on the grill and prepping their supply, Lili having temporarily taken over handling the orders just so they can have a second together. Sweet of her. Yaoyao’ll get her a sweet treat or something nice as a reward later, no matter how much she’s sure to try and refuse it.
For now, though, here's hoping anyone else still in line and getting an eyeful of all this PDA will officially be prevented from getting any ideas.

If you ask Yaoyao in about half an hour, she'll say she deserves an award, probably, for the fact that she didn’t respond by immediately vaulting the counter and grabbing Blondie McBitchhat by the collar of his shirt. But to be fair (or to ask Lili), her actual reaction might… have been... a little worse.
Because what she does do is this: pause for all of a second, look whatsisname up and down like she’s just discovered a lost kid in a liquor shop, and then let out a bark of laughter like that little attempt at a smooth pick-up ‘n take-away is just about the most hilarious thing she’s heard all day.
But for all intents and purposes, let the record state that Yaoyao’s laughter isn’t — at least not completely — on purpose. But come on, now. She’s practically hanging off him like a koala to a tree. They’re basically attached at the hip when they’re not in classes or working. She calls him just about every pet name under the sun, and they’re rarely not holding hands. And for the kicker: today they’re even wearing matching couple’s shirts, her in a purple tee that has ‘HE’S MY SWEET POTATO’ across the chest (granted, she did tie it off at her navel because she got hot working the grill, but still) and him in the corresponding yellow ‘I YAM’.
To have missed all of that? All of it? Call her an asshole or a sadist, sure, but it’s definitely comedy gold.
“Jeez, ah, jeez. Holy shit. Wow. So your eyes work well enough to see baobao as a catch, but not well enough to notice the matching shirts? Wow. Oh, wow.” She could lean on the counter, or one of the shadow arms - but she leans on her baobao instead, using his warm shoulder to keep herself steady as her laughter tapers off into snickers. “Whew… wow. If I didn't know better, I’d almost think I needed that.”

They’re both used to the way people light up around Kei. They flock to him, they’re drawn to him, and it’s no surprise that the guy who got an embodiment of darkness to fall head over heels for him is a magnet for anyone else with a working brain. It’s not new, essentially. Much of the time, Yaoyao’s completely unthreatened by it; she’ll even get a little smug about it on Kei’s behalf. ‘That’s my baobao. Admire him, adore him, respect him. Ain’t he a wonder?’, and other such proud thoughts.
Of course, they’re valid thoughts, as far as Lili is concerned (in a completely platonic sense, mind you). Kei is wonderful. He’s kind, and intelligent, and as Yaoyao makes sure to reiterate daily, he’s… well, to paraphrase from Yaoyao’s effusive commentary: he’s very nice to look at, all broad and soft and bright. In fact, Lili can count six people that are staring at Kei’s… assets… as we speak.
And she can also tell that… Yaoyao is, more or less, mentally stabbing each and every single one of them.
Case in point: this Toru boy. He seems perfectly nice, in Lili’s opinion, but he is also holding up the line. Furthermore, while Lili is altogether often quite - ah - obtuse, about such things… Yaoyao’s keen eyes can tell very clearly: it’s probably not just a friendly chat that Toru is in the market for.
Still, considering her usual inclinations, Yaoyao exhibits remarkably good behavior — no scary shadow-show (yet), no shark-toothed smile. Just a gentle hip-check for Kei, and one human hand braced on the countertop: “Oi, blondie. Are you gonna order something or not?” Her other flesh and blood hand is on the counter, too - on Kei’s other side, so she’s basically hovering right over him, yet again. Her tone isn’t outright hostile, though… yet, at least. “We still got customers after you, y’know.”

“Are you serious, man? I’m not a kid—“
There’s a loooong silence. Broseph looks from his handfuls to the flyer. Then at the dango in his hands again. Then at the flyer again. Somebody in line clears their throat all pointed-like, the girl right behind Brotis stifles a laugh, and that just about does it for the poor guy’s ego. He puffs up like some bad imitation of one of those inflatable body-builder dolls, color creeping a little up his neck, and scoffs real hard.
“I mean, like, okay, you can’t blame me, dude. You gave ‘em to me all - weird, and that chick probably made ‘em bad or--or somethin’. These look all wrong, nothing like the ones I’m used to, that’s for… … sure…”
The line behind him takes a few shuffling steps back. He looks like he kind of wants to do that to, only he doesn’t know how. And who could blame him?
Yaoyao stands just behind Kei’s shoulder, drawn up to her full height. No more leaning over a grill or a cutting board, no more slouching in boredom. Her head is wreathed in shadows, her face barely visible in the preternatural darkness hanging over her, and her hair floats up and around her; like some kind of demented jellyfish stingers underwater, or a demonic halo, or something equally menacing, and the only thing visible out of the shadows over her face is her eyes: neon, psychedelic, electric purple, pupils drawn into thin, glowing slits. The air is sharp and crisp with the smell of ozone, with the pressure in the air before a storm—
Señor Snapback turns and leaves without another word. By the time Kei turns around - if he turns around - Yaoyao, perfectly normal and human, is boredly eyeing the customer who’d been just behind the pesky prick: a nice, normal girl who’s happy to place her order, take her order, and be on her merry way.
Crisis averted - for now.

This is Kei’s shift, Lili reminds her, like a cautionary hand on the shoulder. We’re helping because of him, which - technically - means he’s responsible for whatever we do. So, if we start something, he might get in trouble… And unfortunately, that’s a good point, and a good reason to keep her cool.
Even more unfortunately, sometimes people get a real kick out of digging themselves even deeper into whatever hole they’ve fallen into.
“Tch. Whatever, man. Make sure those ears are clean ’n primed for some top-notch listening this time, ‘kay?” It’s a completely friendly thing to say, (except for the giant, award-worthy whole-head eye-roll that came with it). “Two mitarashi dango, two kinako dango, and two anko. Got it?”
Yaoyao tilts her head. Lili tilts the shadow appendage she’s using to see and help keep an eye on the grill. Both of them stare at the dango the customer is holding: three sticks in each hand; 1 mitarashi in each hand, 1 kinako in each hand, and 1 anko in each hand.
Lili can feel the vein threatening to pop beneath Yaoyao’s bangs. “Are you stu— certain that that’s not what you asked for?”
“Babe, if I’d got what I wanted we wouldn’t still be here.”
Lili, let me at him.
No!! Remember Kei’s responsibilities!!
They’ll never find the body-
There are so many witnesses, Yaoyao, they most certainly will!

Technically, you’re not supposed to kill your own boss. It’s frowned upon. Legally. Judicially. Then again, that applies to killing anybody, but it’s probably more frowned upon to kill your own boss specifically? Maybe? Fuck it, whatever the case is — whatever the laws are about it — Yaoyao’s this close to breaking all of ‘em.
[ boss ] ya so uhhh i’m not comin in today [ boss ] theres this awesome new brand collab at this cafe right next 2 my neighborhood in my fave game [ boss ] yk how it is [ boss ] gotta get them points baybeeeeeee [ boss] cant miss it [ boss ] u can handle rescheduling the appointments n opening n stuff [ boss ] love how i can always count on u yaochan 💖
Except she’s at that cafe and there’s no goddamn brand collaboration in sight. Just a normal cafe, and a normal setup, and no sign of her boss and the keys she’d need to even get into the parlor to reschedule those stupid appointments that aren’t even part of her job/apprenticeship anyway, and. She’s gonna kill him. She’s gonna do it. She’s honest to god just gonna —
CRASH.
Oh, look, a convenient shitshow for her to deal vent her fury on instead of Kenichi Inumatsu’s face (or her phone). How nice.
