"Ah, right, of course!" Rin laughed awkwardly, fumbling to retrieve her ID - looking just as nervous in the photo as she did in person, though the bags under her eyes were gone and her face was a bit fuller when it had been taken. It did clearly show she was old enough though, and Rin held it out awkwardly until the bartender either took it or gave some indication she could put it away again. Once she had, Rin glanced down at the counter until the bartender offered something 'fun and simple'?
Peeking up at the bartender and hesitantly returning the smile, she gave a little nod. "Uhm, I'd appreciate that."
She really would too - she didn't know anything about alcohol, or her own tolerance for it. For all she knew even something fun and simple would still be too much for her and she'd end up looking like an idiot. Or offending the bartender. Or both! Maybe she shouldn't have bothered coming in at all? But, why shouldn't she have? She'd wanted to check it out and... that was okay, wasn't it? Even though she wasn't voicing any of these thoughts, the way her shoulders hunched in and her eyebrows scrunched as she debated her own thoughts was pretty obvious to anyone looking at her. , |

"Ah... Right! You're totally right!" Rin gave an awkward laugh before letting the topic drop, falling silent and focusing on running for a moment. The entire time she was running though she was trying to ignore her legs being sore, her lungs being tired, and the nagging little worries that she had come across as too pushy and made things awkward in her attempts to be encouraging and friendly. Should she apologize? No, no, she knew that made things worse half the time and made them feel bad for her instead of actually reassuring anything. That Momoiro agreed about sakura petals being a pretty Quirk aesthetic was a relief though - she wouldn't have wanted to step on any toes by complimenting something Momoiro hated about their Quirk.
Eventually though Rin was just out of steam, slowing to a jog before stalling out entirely. She wasn't nearly on par with the other second years. Not even on par with some of the first years. Once she'd recovered enough to feel comfortable speaking again, she'd bring a hand up in a friendly sort-of-wave at Momoiro. "Uhm, thanks for talking and I hope you have a good time here at UAU... and if I can ever help with anything let me know! Uhm, I'm going to go uh, clean up and grab some lunch so... see you some other time?" , |

Did she have more confidence? She must have at least seemed like she did if Iphi-san had said so... and she trusted her as a good judge of character. Even if she had her doubts about any real growth she had made, she'd believe Iphi's assessment and allow herself a small smile at the compliment. Listening intently to Iphi, she didn't mind the hand on her shoulder at all. Iphi-san was one of the few people who didn't complain or freak out about how cold to the touch she was. "That makes sense..." She half-mumbled thoughtfully, trying to rack her brain for ideas.
"I guess the first thing that comes to mind is getting good enough to make a mini-snowstorm?" She suggested half-heartedly, not sure how exactly that would be useful for much of anything. Maybe obscuring vision? But she couldn't control wind, just the snow itself, so it'd be her just... throwing a bunch of snowflakes around in the air wildly? Not wanting to give up at just one idea she continued. "Uhm, another idea could be like some kind of snow-cyclone? Since that would be a little denser and could probably move stuff it touched... Oh, do you think making a giant snowman would be useful? Something that could move around and throw punches?"
She tried not to sound too hopeful, but she couldn't help the tinge of excitement that lit up in her brown eyes. If she could learn to do something like that she might actually feel like her Quirk could be useful after all. Then it wouldn't even matter if she was too scared to fight up close or not, or if a villain was larger than her or not. , |

Even through the surprise of someone saying she had an incredible Quirk, Rin recognized the tell-tale 'rephrase-on-the-fly-because-I-almost-said-something-rude' and experienced a burst of second-hand anxiety. But also empathy. She knew, or she thought she knew, exactly what it was like trying to navigate conversations like this. How did she feel when people reacted to her when she did that, which reactions made her feel worse or feel okay? Should she try to react in a particular way to put Momoiro at ease, or should she just ignore it? And what if she misjudged Momoiro as being too similar to her after all and made a mistake?
But while Rin was thinking about that, Momoiro started talking about the aesthetic of snow and showing some genuine appreciation for it before cutting themself off. Slowing in her jogging for a moment, she caught herself getting distracted and with a few quick steps got back into pace. "Uhm, I'm glad you think so. And it's okay if you want to talk about what you like more." She was trying to be reassuring, but that self-critical part in the back of her head called her out for wanting to hear someone say nice things about her Quirk and she had to make a conscious effort to try and ignore it. "Oh, also! I didn't see much of it but your Quirk looked really nice too! Sakura Petals have this really relaxing quality to them, I think."

Allowing the pat on her head, head tipping down a bit, Rin couldn't help but feel more at ease. Which paradoxically made her feel conflicted. Wasn't she too old to treat like a kid? But, was a reassuring head pat even something exclusive to kids? There wasn't anything wrong with being reassured by someone you had known since you were a kid, who was basically part of the family, right? Thankfully with conversation to be had Rin couldn't dwell on it too much.
"That's good... and I'm doing fine. Uhm, my week was fine too." She wasn't really lying or anything, just omitting what was pretty much routine for her by now. She just had to power through and keep on keeping on and things would get better eventually anyways, so there was no point bothering people to complain about it in the meantime. Listening to Iphi's explanation about super moves the brunettes eyes went a little wide in surprise.
"I'm... surprised to hear there was something you struggled with in school, Iphi-san." She winced slightly at how that probably sounded, hastily adding: "Ah, what I mean is you always seem so together and capable that it's hard to picture... Uhm, its great that Stellar was able to help you out though and I'm more than happy to try and help too! I'm not sure if I can figure out a super move myself yet but... it's worth a shot, right?" , |

Jogging up to the training field, Rin had opted for a track suit since it would work well for most tasks. If it got too hot she could always ditch the jacket, though she doubted it with how chronically cold she was and her ability to make snow on demand. She had her hair pulled back into the just-long-enough-to-manage ponytail that she often had it in and didn't look any less tiny than she had during her first year. If anything she was probably scrawnier if the extra bagginess of her outfit was any indication. Slowing into a walk the last few steps until she reached where Iphigenia was waiting, Rin gave a quick bow.
It probably still seemed overly formal to most when it was a teacher she was familiar with and had helped her out a lot already, but for Rin it was more relaxed than she usually did since she didn't nearly fold herself in half in the process.
"Sorry if I kept you waiting, Iphi-san." Rin straightened up and gave her best attempt at a warm smile. It wasn't free of the nervousness that plagued her at nearly all times, but she tried not to dwell on them and instead focused on Iphigenia and the task at hand. "Uhm, I hope you've had a good week? And I'm ready to... to help however I can!"
She wasn't sure what they would be doing, not exactly anyways. But past experiences had taught her that Iphi-san was patient and good at explaining things, so she wasn't too worried for once. She knew her own mastery of her Quirk wasn't coming along as well as it should have, and while she mostly wanted to help repay Iphi-san a bit... she admittedly was hoping she could stumble onto some kind of breakthrough herself while she was at it. That wasn't too selfish or anything, was it? |

Turning into cherry blossoms sounded plenty impressive to Rin. Better than just throwing snow at things, or shootings lasers or whatever. Maybe she was biased because she didn't think highly of her own Quirk, but being able to transform seemed so much more useful to her. Especially if it could be used to avoid being hurt, or maybe to slip in through small spaces, or who knew what else. But she wasn't going to argue there, instead just opting for a more hesitantly neutral comment: "I'm sure it has its uses!"
She wanted to kick herself for how that sounded after she said it, but she managed to refrain from going on a clarification spree like she usually did. People often tried to reassure her about her own Quirk and while she appreciated it, she also felt like they didn't get how she felt at all. And then she ended up feeling bad about thinking that way.
Thankfully she had jogging, introductions and a question back to her - followed by an all too familiar clarification spree - to keep her focus. "I-its okay, no offense taken at all, Sakurai-san! Uhm," She stopped talking for a moment to mentally go over everything Momoiro had said so she wouldn't accidentally ignore something. "I took the entrance exam, but mostly got in for more... assist points? And I think a free ticket in is actually really lucky! Uhm... Oh, I do have a quirk! My roommate doesn't, and she's actually really incredible." Technically Freja had a quirk as far as she understood it, it was just a one-and-done weird situation that had left her essentially Quirkless. That she had managed to get into UAU and do all the incredibly things she had seen her do over their first year here without a Quirk was actually really inspiring. Even if she had never told Freja that. "I can make and control snow. Uhm, only snow though. Not ice or water, so if it gets too ice-y or melts I can't do anything with it."

Rin felt immense relief that she had somehow managed to smooth things over. Or at the very least, the first year didn't seem to be holding it against her. What was close enough to a success to feel good about it, right? They did apologize one last time though, and Rin wasn't exactly sure how to respond to it, so she just gave them a nervous smile to try and seem reassuring. Even better though, she hadn't ruined their attempt at training either since they were willing to get back into it!
Breaking out into a jog herself, Rin tried to focus on training. That was what she had come out here to do, after all. It was always harder to do anything when anyone was around though and she couldn't help but worry about if her running form was too awkward or if she was staying too close to Momoiro or if she was hanging back too far or... And come to think of it, what if they were just being polite and didn't actually want to run while she was around? The last thing she wanted was to make anyone uncomfortable or to feel forced into things... but she couldn't just go 'oh you dont have to if you dont want to by the way' now that they were running again. That'd just be way, way too awkward and might make it seem like she didn't want to run with them after all or something rude like that.
One thing she did notice though was there weren't any more petals appearing, and after a little bit longer hesitating Rin eventually asked while jogging: "Uhm, so is your Quirk... turning into petals?"
She hoped she sounded curious, which she sincerely was, and not judgmental. She knew what it was like to not like your own Quirk and she didn't know if Momoiro felt that way about their own or not. All of a sudden she also realized she hadn't introduced herself and nearly tripping over her own feet in embarrassment. But she didn't, she only stumbled a bit before continuing to jog along and hastily introducing herself. "I'm Gotoh Rin, by... by the way! S-second year in the hero course." , |

Rin leaned back just a bit as Momoiro started frantically trying to reassure her. Her apology hadn't worked, because of course it hadn't - Momoiro seemed to have the same kind of anxieties that Rin herself had, and Rin knew for a fact that she reacted a lot like this whenever people apologized to her! Being on the receiving end put some stuff in perspective suddenly too, that this kind of apology was overkill and missed the mark and just made things more awkward. It made her appreciate people like her roommates, Iphi-san, and her sister even more too for always tolerating it and being so nice to her.
That clarity vanished when Momoiro grabbed her by the shoulders and then suddenly pulled away, Rin reflexively flinching as she expected them to start talking about how cold she was to the touch - not that it was likely she felt all that cold through her track suit, but it was how everyone reacted to touching her. But then the apology that followed was for grabbing her, with no mention of how cold she was at all, and Rin blinked in surprise.
Realizing she hadn't said anything for a bit, Rin gave a nervous laugh as she brought her hands together in front of her - a nervous habit - and tried her best to start things over on a better foot. "Uhm, it's o-okay, really. Getting carried away happens, right...?" It certainly happened to her a lot, but for once she felt like she was the calmer one in a conversation. Even if she was still stammering and trailing off. Perking up as a thought came to her she lightly bopped one of her fists into her hand. "Ah, why don't we just say we both are sorry and no harm was done?" She wasn't sure if that sounded as good as she hoped, but she wanted to try and salvage whatever good reputation she could with the first year. And help someone as nervous as herself calm down if she could, instead of always being the one needing calmed down. "Oh and, get back to running!"
Trying to add a bit of levity she did a little jogging in place motion, feeling more awkward than anything and hoping she didn't look or sound like as much of an idiot as she felt. , |

Momoiro yelling in surprise prompted a shocked "Wah!" of surprise from Rin, stumbling to a stop. Thankfully she didn't fall over, but as she watched them tumble she scrunched her shoulders up and her head down in a preemptive wince. And then brought her hands up over her mouth in nervous dread as they turned into a pile of petals. When Momoiro reformed and just stared at her, Rin was staring back in wide eyed hororr.
How had she messed up that hard already? This was a terrible first impression, scaring them like that and making them fall and interrupting their training. Stupid, stupid, stupid!
The whole time Rin was mentally berating herself her pale face was increasingly brighter shades of red... and then Momoiro bowed and said good morning. Returning it with a bow of her own, hands dropping down at her sides, Rin quickly started apologizing. "I'm sorry for surprising you, you didn't get hurt did you? I should have waited until you were done running to say hi, I didn't mean to sneak up on you like that. Um, I don't mean that you weren't paying attention but that I didn't think... uh, that I..." Her rambling stalled out as she realized she was just digging herself into a hole and she forced herself to stop talking. , |

Looking at herself in the mirror in her room, Rin sighed. Dark circles under her eyes, her brown hair was full of split ends, her skin was notably dry. Not enough to be a real problem, but it was clear stress and everything else was hitting her pretty hard despite her best efforts to power through. A quick trim of the split ends was enough to try to prevent her hair from getting worse, dark circles could be covered up with makeup, and some moisturizer could help with dry skin - and she told herself it'd get better when summer ended too. What she couldn't fix so easily though was that she was not even remotely where she should have been in her second year here at UAU. Barely any muscle, Rin had been tiny when she joined UAU but where most students got more fit with time Rin had only gotten skinnier.
Bringing her hands up to her face and giving her cheeks a quick clap, she decided she was going to have to workout better and actually get into the shape a future hero should be in.
Breakfast was light but full of protein and then she was out the door bright and early in her UAU tracksuit. She didn't know it but she had the same idea as the first year, hitting up the fields for a run. Standing off to the side to get some stretching in first, the petals from Momoiro's quirk caught her attention and she watched them for a moment. She'd seen them before, and they seemed to have a similar nervous disposition that Rin herself was all too familiar with, but she hadn't actually worked up the nerve to reach out and try to help yet. Thinking about how tough her own first year had been, she took a deep breath before breaking out into a run to see if she could catch up and maybe offer to train together for a bit. Or just talk while they did, or something?
Once she did, Rin brought one hand up in a hesitant wave and called out "Good morning!" maybe a little too loudly. , |

Somehow, her first year at UAU didn't make the start of her second any easier. Or at least that was how Rin felt. More training and more studying and more worrying about not disappointing anyone. She had to worry about trying to be a good example for the first years too, something she felt horrible unprepared for.
Worse, she didn't feel like she had made much improvement on the whole be-a-better-person thing.
So here she was at the library, going through the shelves and pulling out any book that looked like it could help her until the stack in her hands went up just past her chin and she had to shakily scurry to a table to set them all down. The reading space in UAU was actually really comfortable and roomy, but somehow Rin managed to trip over her own feet, bonk her forehead, and sent all the books sliding across the table and floor with what felt like a thunderous storm of thuds and rustling pages. It actually wasn't nearly that loud, though the quiet of the library did make things sound louder, but to Rin it was mortifying as she sat there with her hands rubbing at her forehead.
She really hoped she hadn't disturbed anybody, hastily picking up the books to stack them properly on the table. |

Rin briefly watched Enma bolt off at incredible speed, followed by one of the first years she wasn't personally familiar with yet at still pretty impressive speeds. Maybe she was just projecting but she thought she could sense some familiar nervous energy from the first year, something about the way they had held themselves and taken off felt like how Rin herself did those things. Lucille confirming her question, the second year shouting down to her from up on a parking complex and then Lucille encouraging her to get going prompted her to give a hasty "Okay, t-thanks!" and shouting "Pumpkin-bombs, g... got it!" to let Enma know she had heard him before sprinting off after her fellow students.
It was actually a good thing she wasn't as fast as the guy that had called out to her because by the time she approached the parking complex he was already leaping down it again and that told her it was all clear of pumpkin-bombs. Or well, she assumed it was anyways. Apparently all they needed to do was find them and smash them? Even she could do that, right?
So she ran along in vaguely the same direction as Enma and Momoiro, pausing now and then to frantically peer down corners or under obstacles that might be hiding a pumpkin. She wouldn't even need her Quirk for this after all, probably, right? Well, maybe if someone needed an emergency landing after falling off of something... she really hoped that didn't happen, or if it did she or someone else was nearby enough to make a save. While searching she couldn't help but feel a little outclassed by just how impressive Enma was. Was that really where second years were supposed to be at already? She wasn't nearly as fast, and she couldn't jump like that so she definitely wasn't as strong... she didn't think of herself as particularly tough either.
A Jack-o-lantern interrupted her train of thought as she peered in through a doorway, sitting on a countertop just out of view enough that running by would have missed it. With a little "Ah, a pumpkin!" Rin scurried over, hesitating briefly as she considered how to go about 'disarming' it before just hefting the thing up and smashing it on the ground at her feet.
Assuming nothing catastrophic happened, and Rin half expected that something catastrophic WOULD happen, she lingered for just a moment to catch her breath before she'd be off again to continue searching and trying her best not to let her nerves get the beter of her. , enma, Momoiro Sakurai, |
