Even though it wasn't like the bartender had jumped up from behind the counter or anything, Rin gave a little start when she appeared anyways. Which was embarrassing, but at least the bartender being so friendly helped. A little, anyways. Taking a seat as instructed, sitting extra straight with her hands down at her knees and her feet close together - even though she was too short to touch the ground - it was clear just looking at her that she hadn't really sat at a bar before. Glancing at the bartender's face before almost immediately looking at the counter instead, the little laminated menus was a pleasant surprise. Not just because it gave her something to focus on, but because it meant she wouldn't need to ask for a menu either.
"Ah, I'm a First Timer yeah." She gave a little nod, slowly reading through the list. She was actually surprised by how much they had. She didn't know anything about alcohol that wasn't common knowledge or in manga or shows or so on. And usually those didn't go into much detail at all either. "Uhm, I pass by this place all the time and I've never come in so..." She trailed off, glancing away from the menu to look at the offered water. Obviously she should get a drink, but should she get food too? And which drink should she get? What if she didn't like it? "Do... you have any recommendations?"
She asked the question with a nervous laugh before trying to explain and starting to ramble. "I haven't really tried much alcohol before, so I don't really know what would be good or not. Uhm, not that anything you have wouldn't be good. I'm sure it's all really good! I just mean more, uhm, I don't know what I would like, I guess?"

The cawing as an introduction put a very small smile on Rin's face, standing with the rest of the assembled students. If any of her roommates were also participating in this exercise she'd try to stand near them, but if not she was content enough to just kind of keep to herself - hands clasped together and down in front of her, shoulders tucked in and generally trying not to take up too much space or get in anyone's way. Which, for a girl as small as Rin was, was a somewhat ridiculous concern but it was a subconscious habit. The last thing she wanted was to accidentally bump into anyone and cause a scene over how cold to to the touch she was surprising them.
Thankfully, she had Arbogast-san to focus on and the homeroom teacher was so charismatic and light hearted that even someone as nervous as Rin could relax a little bit.
Hearing that the bombs would be easy to disarm was a relief too. She didn't mind that they would be harder to find, that wasn't nearly as stressful as having a bomb right in front of you and having no idea how to disarm it. Being allowed to use their Quirks was maybe a good thing too? She could probably disarm it manually if it wasn't too complicated, but at worst she could probably just... bury it in so much snow it wouldn't be able to hurt anybody when it went off. Or maybe being cold might mess with how the bomb worked? She knew some stuff like computers didn't handle extreme temperature changes all that well so that was an idea...
Getting to temporarily side-kick and learn directly from a pro was always an exciting prospect. She appreciated Iphi-san a lot for helping her even outside of normal school experiences that way, even if the situations she had gotten into were really scary once or twice. She wouldn't mind getting to see how someone like Arbogast-san operated up close either, but she doubted she'd be particularly impressive - and besides, other students would probably deserved and needed an experience like that a lot more than she did.
When it was time for questions she inched her way over towards the teacher, letting anyone else who had a question go first if they wanted, before timidly raising her hand to ask: "Uhm, Arbogast-san, are we allowed to work in groups?" While asking her question, not realizing that it had already been answered at the end of the speech, she glanced over at the P.E. teacher, wondering if she ever got enough sleep with how tired she always looked. That wasn't somehow her fault for needed rescued from a rope-tangling incident last P.E. class, was it? Hoping that wasn't the case she focused on her shoes instead while waiting for the teachers verdict on teamwork. If it was allowed she was going to try to cooperate with as many people as she could, and if not... well... she'd just have to try not to get in anyone's way and disarm at least one bomb all on her own! |

Rin nodded and gave a confirming little "Uh huh." as she glanced outside the window. She really was getting along well with them, but she couldn't help but wonder if her roommates felt the same way. Or if they were just tolerating her and humoring her when they were nice to her. Maybe they didn't actually think nearly as highly of her as she did of them? If that was the case... she only had herself to blame for not doing good enough. She'd have to try a lot harder to be a better roommate, a better friend, and a better teammate in classes.
These sorts of thoughts were quickly banished by the promise of a big coffee flavored ice cream, and her older sister being kind enough to pay for it too. She was always spoiling her, or trying to, and Rin maybe selfishly let it happen. It just meant Sadako was being a good big sister, right?
Nodding along as she took a bite out of part of her ice cream, Rin spotted it leaning to one side and hastily turned the cone in her hand to work on evening it out. "Definitely." She agreed. Hotter days for her weren't usually an issue because of her Quirk, but she still enjoyed a cool drink or a sweet treat like this all the same. Pausing to blink at Sadako, she gave a small smile. "Thats... true, I hadn't realized that." She'd been so busy with school and everything that it hadn't really clicked with her that she could just pop by and chat with her in person more easily now. Her expression faltered at the mention of their parents, giving a more strained smile as she focused on her ice cream. "Excited, happy, proud, all good things... uhm, maybe a bit too... obviously surprised."
She felt petty admitting it, but she had gotten the impression their parents had expected her to fail and were more surprised than they were proud. , |

Listening and watching intently, Rin gave a slow and hesitant nod before nodding a second time with a little more certainty. "I think I get it." She hoped she did at least. Watching it seemed simple enough but she imaged the actual physical action took a bit of practice to get down. Fortunately, it was just her and Freja around and while it was true she wasn't exactly trying to learn how to use this stuff... who knew when it might come in handy? Besides, Freja had been kind enough to ask her to come along and the least she could do was try to be a good friend and share a hobby with her.
She maybe also still felt bad about getting body-controlled that one time and being forced to attack each other, but she didn't bring it up - that'd just make Freja feel like she was guilt tripping Rin or something when that absolutely wasn't the case. The brunette just had a lot of thoughts going around in her head all the time and past mistakes and embarrassments often jumped out all hey-remember-that-time at her a lot.
More importantly, casting her line like she had been shown with maybe a little more caution than necessary Rin kept her attention on where the line disappeared under the water while asking: "Have you gone fishing a lot, Freja-san? I've heard about the sitting there for hours thing before in, uh... well movies and books and stuff I guess. But it always seemed kind of... peaceful, and then suddenly surprising and exciting when you do hook something out of nowhere?"
She had no idea if that was an accurate representation of fishing or not, but it was the best she could draw on. Unnoticed by Rin and likely Freja as well, a good distance away a strange man was walking back and forth along the edges of the water - focused intently on the water as if they were searching for something. Every now and then the the man would stop in a spot before searching, visiting the same spots over and over again for what had to have been at least an hour. For her part, Rin was just chatting with Freja during that time about this and that - asking about UAU, life, anything that seemed like something Freja would enjoy talking about.
All of a sudden though she felt a tug on the line, giving a startled gasp and nearly fumbling the rod into the water entirely as she cut herself off mid-sentence to try and reel it in. "I got something! Am I reeling it right?" She asked for advice, panicking and not wanting to mess up her first catch. When it finally lifted out of the water she was half expecting a boot or something embarrassing like that.

She hadn't been to The Stingray before, but she had seen it a few times. Rin didn't really go to bars much. Socializing was hard enough as it was, and every time she even thought much about drinking in public she started to fret and worry about if she might act like an idiot or make people upset or any number of things. On one hand she knew that was her being hard on herself, but on the other hand obnoxious drunk people did really exit and she really didn't want to be one.
She'd like to be able to say it was because she was working on expanding her comfort zone, but the truth was she'd just had a really, really bad day. A really bad week, and month, and year really. So, when she started to walk past it today for some reason she felt like actually going inside for once.
That impulsiveness didn't change that she peeked through the door when she opened it, or that she had her hands tucked together in front of her as she approached the central counter.
If nobody was there, or in a spot where she couldn't immediately see them, Rin would resign herself to just standing there awkwardly to wait for someone to appear. If someone was though, or when they did show up, she'd give a strained smile and a stiff little bow before asking: "Ah... this is my first time here, uhm..." She trailed off, quickly losing steam. What were you even supposed to do at a bar? Order drinks obviously, but how did you know what would be best to order? Maybe food would be easier? |

Before my Quirk showed up, I did most of the normal things kids did. I was even cool for a bit afterwards, being able to make little snowflakes even in the summer. But they always melted really fast if it wasn't cold enough for snow and it wasn't fun to play with that way, and then everyone started noticing how cold I was. Whenever I would try to play tag or other games the other kids always complained about it, didn't want to touch me or me to touch them because of how unpleasantly cold I was. Even my younger siblings had a problem with it, and eventually I just... stopped participating in that kind of stuff. I still tried to do other things, but every now and then I'd accidentally make contact with someone and it'd cause a problem. So I stopped doing that too, and got really good at keeping to myself. A lot of other stuff would happen all the time, nothing major but just... embarrassing stuff that made it awkward to try and do just about anything. I'd spill stuff, forget an assignment, lose a yen under a vending machine, all kinds of inconvenient things like that. And always, always with an audience to make it feel worse! I don't remember when I started listening to the kinds of music I like, it feels like I always have, but it was actally because of different songs and bands that I decided I wanted to try to be a hero. My older brother went to hero school too, and I admire him a lot. The whole saving people thing sounds nice, but honestly I just want to be a bettter person than I am now. I'm pretty sure I only passed the entrance exam because I was able to make some snow-cushions and other things while I was busy having a complete meltdown. I was honestly really surprised I passed, but so was everyone else - they were all really polite and supportive, but I can tell they were sure I was going to fail. Rin herself is ice-cold to the touch at all times, although this is mostly just uncomfortable for other people. Pushing her Quirk too hard causes her to suffer effects similar to hypothermia such as uncontrollable shivering, drowsiness, clumsiness and short-term memory loss. In a bubble, Rin seems like a relaxed and friendly and perfectly normal girl. She minds her manners, does her share of any work without complaint, is patient and very considerate in regards to making sure her music isn't on too loud. This gives the impression of her being a model student, and while she'd like to live up to that impression she... doesn't. Rin does her best to look presentable, and this can be seen in how she wears her school uniform without deviation or how her other clothing choices range from business-like attire to pre-assembled outfits guaranteed to look nice. She tries to ensure her clothes are appropriate for the task, weather and situation at hand - if a dress or skirt might get in the way, she'll go with pants. While she can have a warm, peaceful demeanor at times she is prone to exaggerated expressions of panic, dismay or fear. She has a tendency to hide her hands in her pockets or behind her, both as a comfort thing when she's feeling nervous and to try and avoid accidental physical contact. She does often shift her hands about uncertainly, and she has a tendency to slouch and tuck her shoulders in - trying to make herself as small as possible. Despite her best efforts, she is an undignified person and is often caught gawking mid-bite and other such minor embarrassments.

I don't really have anything like that. I was born on the hottest day in the hottest part of Japan - I think it still holds that record? - but it wasn't a problem for me or my family. I have an older brother and while I didn't mind being the youngest but that didn't last for long, and I actually have two younger siblings now. I really don't like any sort of conflict, and even as a kid I'd roll over a lot and let the other kids hog my toys and other things like that. My parents and especially my older sister tried to defend me a lot when they could or encourage me to stand up for myself, but that always sounded easier than it was. Whenever I tried, I just ended up feeling bad about it. The only time I stopped getting pushed around as much was when everyone was old enough to know better on their own.
Before my Quirk showed up, I did most of the normal things kids did. I was even cool for a bit afterwards, being able to make little snowflakes even in the summer. But they always melted really fast if it wasn't cold enough for snow and it wasn't fun to play with that way, and then everyone started noticing how cold I was. Whenever I would try to play tag or other games the other kids always complained about it, didn't want to touch me or me to touch them because of how unpleasantly cold I was. Even my younger siblings had a problem with it, and eventually I just... stopped participating in that kind of stuff. I still tried to do other things, but every now and then I'd accidentally make contact with someone and it'd cause a problem. So I stopped doing that too, and got really good at keeping to myself.
A lot of other stuff would happen all the time, nothing major but just... embarrassing stuff that made it awkward to try and do just about anything. I'd spill stuff, forget an assignment, lose a yen under a vending machine, all kinds of inconvenient things like that. And always, always with an audience to make it feel worse! I don't remember when I started listening to the kinds of music I like, it feels like I always have, but it was actally because of different songs and bands that I decided I wanted to try to be a hero. My older sister went to hero school too, she's a counselor now even, and I admire her a lot. The whole saving people thing sounds nice, but honestly I just want to be a bettter person than I am now.
I'm pretty sure I only passed the entrance exam because I was able to make some snow-cushions and other things while I was busy having a complete meltdown. I was honestly really surprised I passed, but so was everyone else - they were all really polite and supportive, but I can tell they were sure I was going to fail. One day, I want to be the kind of person that makes people go "As expected of Rin!" whenever I succeed.

A short distance away from the meeting spot, Rin was still trying to work up the nerve to go out into the training field properly and great the two first years. Half-tucked behind a wall, the brunette was struggling with all new anxieties. Like giving a good impression as a second year, making sure she didn't scare away the first years or accidentally injure them or herself, making sure she could actually help the first years out, among all sorts of other things. The thing she kept getting hung up on was that she was a second year now, that people would potentially look up to her or expect her to live up to second-year-standards when she had barely managed to make it through first year. Maybe she could text Iphi-san or her sister or Freja or Emi or someone for advice?
"No no, they're busy with their own things..." Rin murmured under her breath. Bringing her hands up to smack against her cheeks a couple times, and mostly just making her face sting a bit, she straightened up and took a deep breath and walked out towards the meeting spot. Bringing one hand up in a hesitant wave before forcing herself to commit to a more energetic - perhaps too energetic? - one, the second year picked her pace up into a quick little jog to close the last couple feet.
"Ah, sorry for making you wait." Rin brought her hands down in front of her and bowed in apology before introducing herself. "I'm Gotoh Rin, the... second year, that is going to, uh, be training with you today." What was she supposed to say or do after introducing herself? Well, she had overheard Zoey's introduction but it was probably best to give her a chance to reply properly, and the boy first year should get a chance to introduce himself too. So she'd wait a bit to let that happen before clearing her throat and clasping her hands together before saying: "Feel free to, uhm, ask any questions, but when you're both ready we can... start working on some sparring. Do... either of you have any kind of preferences, strong points, weak points?"
How did people like Iphi-san and her sister make giving advice seem so easy?

Iphi's reassuring words snapped her out of it, and where normally Rin would be reluctant to touch someone she was too dazed to shy away out of concern for how cold she always was like usually. She just kind of stood there, hands still held out as she stopped making snow, as Iphi gave her a hug and told her it was okay to cry. Just like that, whatever focus and resolve the brunette had crumbled and she could hardly see through her own tears. Where Freja was quiet with her crying, Rin was loud despite her best efforts to wipe away her own tears and get her breathing steady.
Emi was alive and probably going to be okay, Iphi said she had actually helped ensure that, the horror of the situation, getting a hug and being told it was okay to cry, using her Quirk so much in a short span of time. All of it made her head hurt, and was disorienting - she could hardly tell how much of it was just being overwhelmed and how much of it was her Quirk drawback. Even the way her hands shook as she brushed them across her face could be nerves or imitation hypothermia setting in!
In a sort of haze, Rin eventually managed to move about again. Over to Yunagi to make sure she was okay, to Freja for the same reason without really knowing what to say, to the other survivors of the attack, and no small amount of watching Emi get loaded up onto the helicopter. Iphi calling for everyone else to get on board didn't quite snap her out of it, but it did get her shuffling along while lending small asisstances to anyone she could help. Then she just kind of... sat in the helicoper, and stayed that way for what felt like no time at all and somehow forever at the same time. |

Freja helping protect everyone and giving that little bit of extra encouragement to the trapped civillians, and Yunagi thanking Rin with a smile, actually made the brunette feel kind of good. Nothing bad happened, she didn't mess up or fail to react quickly enough. Her focus was on making snow though, and making sure everyone that jumped down was okay, and like Freja she couldn't help but dwell on the especially shell shocked. Not for long though, Rin glancing ovr towards Iphi as a boom rang out and instructions to head for the center had everyone running along.
In the apprehensive approach towards the center, Rin kept pace with the group. Maybe it was because of Iphi making sure to keep them all together, maybe Rin was just faster on her feet than she gave herself credit for, but when they all arrived together she didn't even realize she'd slowed down as the scene registered. She didn't notice she'd stopped altogether either, eyes wide and starting to water, all the worst thoughts she could think of started coming in. Everyone was dead, they were too slow, she should have been faster, she should have been stronger, she should have helped Emi, she should have been -
Rin didn't really hear Freja's scream, or notice Yunagi's Quirk slowly eating away at her surroundings. She did hear Iphi though, calling on Rin to make as much of the coldest snow she could make, turning to look at her in stunned silence for a split second. "O-on it!" She stammered, moving, hands out and denser, colder snow piling up as Rin's bit back her tears and fears and just focused on making snow.
As cold as she could, as much as Iphi needed, as cold as she could, as much as Iphi needed, as could as she could, as much as Iphi needed.

Rin did her best not to just be impressed with everyone taking out the mini-golems so effectively, doing her best to contribute in what small ways she could. It was hard not to let some distracting thoughts wiggle their way in though, the brunette wondering if she should hit the gym or get some piece of gear made or find some way to make snow more useful. Not that she hadn't already spent a lot of time trying to find out what her Quirk could be good at.
Yunagi calling for her attention pushed those thoughts aside and for a moment Rin locked up. But then Iphi had more encouragement and advice to give, and she responded with two hasty nods in a row and throwing her hands out. "R-right, on it!" With a little focus snow spilled out onto the ground, forming a big fluffy pile. If you compacted it enough maybe you could make a snow bridge or something, but she didn't have the time for that or the confidence that she could make sure it was reliable and safe. But she also knew skiers and the like fell from pretty far up into snow all the time and were just fine, so... to rescue the people on the third floor Rin made a really, really big pile of snow. Probably bigger than it needed to be, but she wasn't going to risk underdoing it! Once she was sort-of-mostly confident it was enough she called out "Jump down! I-it'll be okay!" to the people trapped above and if all went well they'd find themselves landing safely.
Temporarily cold and having to flop their way out of the snow, but safe all the same! Rin would hastily make it easier on them by moving the snow out of their way, letting them get on their feet and continue to evacuate a little bit faster. |

She hated it, but when the quakes happened the first thing Rin did was fall over. If it was just that she probably would have been embarrassed, but she'd pick herself up and try to laugh it off. But when she went to do that is when the source of the quakes became clear, and Rin just kind of... locked up. Eyes wide, frozen where she was, she probably would have recovered faster if Iphi had gone off to get Emi and they were told to stay put. She was great at staying put.
Those plans changed and it was suddenly up to them to help, Iphi quickly grouping them up with different tasks and it was that sudden responsibility that made Rin freeze up. What if she messed up? What if she wasn't quick enough? What if her quirk wasn't good enough? What if that mini-golem about to attack Yunagi-
Rin managed to stumble to her feet and was about to try and make a buffer of snow between Yunagi and her attacker when it shattered into pieces, Iphi blowing it to bits before any harm could be done. It was a huge relief, but it left Rin stalling out again and she probably would have gone right back into her motionless worrying. Except Iphi gave them a simple, somehow reassuring plan and a vote of confidence.
"R-right!" Rin snapped to attention, feeling silly for locking up and somehow sillier for being snapped out of it by simple encouragement - that shouldn't be needed for her to get into gear should it? Bringing her hands up over her mouth she called out "If you're stuck, give a shout!" as loud as she could while following the clockwise plan Iphi had suggested. She wasn't strong, her Quirk couldn't get rid of rubble or destroy the mini-golems, but she could still help a little! Even if it was just finding people for the others to rescue, right? |
