"Which is a funny thing, really. Most offensively useful quirks aren't particularly great for capture techniques, which makes them pretty irrelevant to hero work. You'd think people would be more aware of what the line of work they're signing on for actually entails, but being able to fire sattelite laser strikes isn't really pertinent in the day to dat life of a peacekeeping force," Miroru agrees. "So I'm just getting ahead of the curve and getting good with my fists before it's assigned."
A firm nod at his agreement to stand as her sparring partner. "I'd really appreciate that. And yeah, I've got a good bit of experience. In high school, the idea of the pipsqueak with the furry bits wanting to punch people was novel at first, and then later, when I got pretty good, I was just part of the hand to hand club and it was only the new kids that laughed." Miroru grinned. "That was usually pretty fun, though. Good for a giggle."
He invited her to show him, and she nodded, untying her jacket and tossing it aside, leaving her in a tank top and her tracksuit bottoms. "Apologies in advance- I'm told I can be kinda frustrating. Like I said, I'm light on my feet, so don't let that get to you, okay? I don't mind getting my ass handed to me, but some folx get angry when I don't stand around and take hits." She asked as she took up a pretty standard hand to hand guard.

"... is your hair goo too?" Miroru asked without thinking, unsure if it was actual person-hair or just hair-shaped blobby bits. "And good. I really just wanted some help finding good ways to use my quirk as a capture tool, I'm not looking for a one-way ticket to the psych ward from being mentally punished by quips and quotables for hours at a time."
"Yeah, I am. Studies is the right guess. No prizes for nailing which school it is, either. I've got a useful quirk, but it's sort of all or nothing- utility, or complete overkill when it comes to interacting with criminals. I really don't think there's many situations where its most commonly available offensive application can really be used in this line of work, so I'm trying to expand my horizons and look for other ideas instead. Is that in line with the workshopping you were offering, miss... um... do you just want me to call you Mo?"

"Gen. Okay. And- another second year? So you're a sophomore, then? Good to meet you, senpai," Miroru offered comfortably, pleased to have made what seemed to be a positive connection with an upperclassman. "You think it's inevitable that I'm gonna hear about him? Is he notorious or something?"
"Well, that's the nice thing about the plan. You know what happens if it doesn't change the world? We still got a network of positive workers ready to help the world change when the time comes. It's not an all or nothing, it builds a foundation that is itself useful and beneficial, and still further supports change for the better. See? It's a great idea!"
Miroru slowed with Jun, tilting her head. "You mean set up here in Tokyo, or set up here at UA? You think like as a teacher?" That begged a question. "I wonder if it'd be more effective to find people to lead as role models in the field, or to help make sure we're building up strong positive models in the first place..." She resisted the urge to check Jun to see if she was still alright. She didn't seem to want to be coddled.

"Good. Shame I missed it. I'm a big fan of a well-earned trouncing," Miroru lamented to Farrin. She wasn't a fan of violence on its own, but some people needed percussive attitude adjustments, and those tended to be cathartic to observe after being exposed to the way that sort of person treated others.
"Pleasure's mine," the redhead added as Farrin introduced himself right back. Or- confirmed? Was it technically an introduction if she knew his name from the start? She wasn't sure- and also wasn't certain it mattered.
The other girl's name was delivered by way of a massive boy on top of a gigantic bear- Robin, fitting- and came with a side order of inquiry. Both from the bear-rider and from the smaller... Latin? girl, she guessed? And "why did you bring a fucking bear" seemed a very pertinent question that she was glad she didn't have to ask herself.
"A lot's just about right. I- dunno. I expected more from our classmates than juvenile prejudice at orientation. I was really hopeful they'd be weeding out attitudes like that before admissions, but I guess their qualifications for "makes a good hero" don't extend to shitty personalities." Nobody present was in that category, at least.
The kid on the bear- was it even appropriate to think of a guy that size as a kid? She guessed technically they were all adults by now, she should stop thinking that way- asked about what they were up to, and she thumbed towards Farrin. "Wanted to see if I was too late to see him put the boot to the jerks ridiculing the girl who asked about whether you had to have a quirk to be a Hero. We all missed it, sadly."
She didn't quite catch Farrin's odd reactions, and ended up as surprised as Farrin when she realized Robin was carrying a firearm. "It- yeah. The gun's surprising... but I guess it's not the worst idea to capitalize on available technology. Gunshot wounds can be pretty gnarly, but then again, so can a lot of quirk-inflicted wounds."
She lifted a hand as she was introduced, adding in a quick, "Hiya," to confirm that was indeed her. "Good to meet you, Zenkai, Robin- Beary-chan- and... can we ask for your name?" That, of course, was directed at Thea.
She was... sincerely a bit lost in the chatter about the bear. Was she a person with a Bear quirk? A bear with a quirk? Was she just a bear and Miroru was missing the point entirely?

Idiots.
Miroru sat in the common room of the dormitories after orientation, slumped in the corner of one of the couches. The television was on, set to some vapid talk show discussing the most famous and popular heroes of the day and showcasing their sound bites and video clips. Mindless noise. Something- anything- for her brain to fixate on besides what she'd seen at the assembly.
The sound of those sniggering bastards ridiculing that gray-haired girl- Hert, was it?- for asking a simple and reasonable question. So that despicable rot festered here, too. The arrogant division of the powerful and the "weak." That putrid presumption that without the "right" Quirk, you were lesser. Doomed to inferiority or helplessness.
Miroru had faced that attitude often enough at the hands of her brothers, her father. It was almost worse that she was... so close to being acceptable. Her quirk wasn't worthless- not by a long shot, it had tons of utility and in the right circumstances could be a powerhouse in and of itself... but it wasn't enough. A fairweather failure, they called her. Without the sun's cooperation, she might as well just be a dispatcher or a VFX artist. Not a hero. Just...
An extra.
~ A whiff of honey pulled her attention up and over her shoulder. Over the back of the couch. She sat up and looked.
Nothing. Nobody.
She frowned quietly. The fragrance was gone. Had it ever been there? No. Maybe not. She could have imagined it.
It was all too much.
The redhead got up and walked outside, shutting off the television with a copycat burst of infrared remote data. She needed to clear her head.

Miroru turned and tilted her head as she felt bodyheat move through the area, flattened against the ground, staring at the shadow with a curious frown until Mochi emerged, startling all the same and jerking back, one arm folded past her face in surprise. "E-EH?! A blonde?! Aren't you Japanese?" She cried aloud, shocked.
"Q-QWork study..? Is that...a ... pun..?" The redhead paled abruptly. "Oh no. I thought that was a typo. Please tell me you're not one of those goofy heroes that quips every other sentence, are you..?"
She looked down at the hand offered, entirely off guard, and took it out of sheer social pressure to conform, abruptly letting go with a shriek! "YOU'RE SQUISHY!!!"

"Do you guys ever struggle with like. Philosophical stuff?"
Miroru asked as she and the two boys meandered through the street towards their destination, a local park where some of the local high schoolers with a loose agreement with the rule of law had started causing trouble to keep the park to themselves after school hours. It wasn't a confrontation with much danger involved, but it was the sort of small-scale community action that got the students out and into the city to build familiarity and comfort with the routine of receiving patrol assignments and carrying them out.
She'd met both Farrin and Zenkai when they'd all run into Farrin training not long after Orientation, so the assignment wasn't with strangers, at least.
"Like. Ethics, or the conflict between- I dunno, not wanting to get sent out to fetch cats from trees but recognizing the importance of building community trust and rapport? Anything like that?"
Their route took them into a little shopping plaza with a fountain in the center of a bunch of little storefronts. A used clothing store, a video rental joint, and a small convenience store advertising their in-house sushi chef in the window were the standouts, though the park they were heading towards was a few more blocks away even now.
"Stuff like that gets me in my head a lot," Miroru said as the smell of frying tempura wafted out of the little convenience store. "I try to shake it, but. It's still a thing. You guys ever get bogged down in that sorta headspace?"

Someone had to go first. Don't be afraid to be a show off! This is literally specifically so folx can show off the stuff they've figured out how to do at this point! It's not just a showcase of FLEX but also a way to show off how your character approaches things. Shy and jittery? Big flashy nonsense? A fucking choreographed production with a soundtrack you produced yourself?
LET'S SEE THE NONSENSE.
Staff placed the small podium Miroru had requested in the middle of the street in front of the observation area before vacating the area. From behind one of the buildings, Miroru walked into view and moved to the podium, adjusting a mic pinned to her chest as she does. "Testing." Confirming it was working, she got started.
"I'll make sure not to waste more of your time than necessary," she stated clearly, her voice carried through the speakers in the observation seats, her hands folded behind her back in front of the podium. "In most circumstance, my quirk, Power Prism, is mainly relegated to utility and logistics roles." As she spoke, she demonstrated, twisting the light along the streets to display bright yellow holographic hazard tape, clear arrows along the road indicating the safest ways to proceed.
"Evacuations are magnitudes easier when new and adaptive signs to direct exfiltration can be managed in real time." Overhead, a huge hologram of the Hero Association's icon blazed overhead with an indicator plunging towards the ground to indicate where assistance would be needed. "As is coordinating emergency responses in real time. Even more so-"
Abruptly every cell phone in the area buzzed with a priority alert, beeping three times. Every phone checked would show a text message stating "This is part of the demonstration" and the speakers continued to project her voice. "-when access to emergency broadcast channels also rely on the same electromagnetic foundation as the light used to construct these signs; the public address systems; and my very appearance here." As the words were delivered, Miroru herself disappeared entirely, revealing that she'd never been physically present in that spot in the first place.
Instead, a broad holographic display showed them where she really was- in the streets just outside the dome, looking into her phone for the image from her camera that she was recreating inside the dome. She wasn't wearing a microphone, making it clear she'd simply broadcast the digital signals to replicate her voice into the speaker systems inside the dome.
"But I know that fancy light shows and logistics demonstrations aren't what you're here to see today," her voice intoned over the speaker system as the image shifted to her own view as she turned away from her phone towards the same view down the street away from the dome her phone had held a moment ago, likely due to being unable to watch the phone's screen as well as what she was doing at the same time. "So, I'll finish on a more expected note. In MOST circumstances, logistics and utility is where my quirk shines. But in the RIGHT circumstances-"
The view abruptly darkened violently as the clear, bright sky for hundreds of feet overhead in all directions outside the dome went black, light still streaming in from all sides but completely blocked from above.
"-it can do... this."
A single, hair-thin beam of light descended from the black-out sky overhead and lanced silently down into one of the buildings nearby. Sunlight- all of the sunlight pouring down into a couple hundred thousand square feet of aerial real estate, funneled into a single beam the breadth of a needle- fired straight down through the building, turning the matter in a pillar straight down through its core into superheated gasses in an instant. And in the next, they did what such gasses did- and exploded outwards, pulverizing the building and catapulting its constituent pieces outwards in the way of such things with a thunderous boom felt even inside the protective dome.
The audience's view of the explosion was short-lived, as the perspective shifted as Miroru moved behind a building for cover just before a showering cascade of concrete debris rained down on the dome, pattering for a few moments as Miroru closed out her exhibition, her view of the rubble falling into the streets outside the dome lasting until she signed off.
"I am Prism, the Spectrum Hero, and I thank you for your time and attention.
Please enjoy the show."
The display ended.

"That's honestly a relief. I'd be really unhappy if it seemed like you had been hurt that bad by a classmate with that sort of attitude. I've got- more experience with that outlook than I should, and worlds less patience than I've been told I ought to for people behaving that way," Miroru stated simply. She kept their pace gentle enough for Jun to find her own stride while they spoke.
"Dating your- oh. Man, that's... tangled. Hard to get a handle on a relationship that's not even yours. Sorta like the worst sort of contact high. Stuck with the roommate, which means stuck with the egomaniac. Who are we talking about? Can I ask?"
Overnight. No. It wouldn't. "Of course not. It's gonna take time, and a lot of it. And results. Nobody is gonna listen to someone bitching about a system considered to work well enough if you can't offer a replacement that works in enough of a superior fashion to be worth the work to switch over. So as far as a plan, it's more like a battle strategy. Connect with the likeminded. Support the worthwhile. And build a network of heroes that support each other and serve the people instead of the glorified rat's nest of talking heads and celebrity soldiers we have now. That's the plan."

Miroru didn't benefit from echoes of times she could not touch nor remember. She wasn't blessed with the sort of tight-knit past that supported some of her schoolmates in ways she couldn't even make up if she tried. But it did allow a sort of clarity. When she came to see Farrin, she didn't have to wonder if it'd been preordained. She knew she'd come because it'd been what she wanted to do, and nothing more.
Or maybe she was just blind to currents of fate etching again bonds to forge the future.
Miroru's eyes fall onto Farrin's blows with an air of practiced recognition. She's not lost in awe at the speed but curious and attentive to form, to how they are delivered and structured. "Shame. You clearly know what you're doing- you're going to need some serious muscle behind your partners to keep you sharp, and unless I'm missing my guess, what you've got behind those strike patterns isn't even incorporating your quirk."
She closes the rest of the distance and props her hands on her hips, diminutive as she is. "Well, I'd intended to come to offer to help you stay sharp as a veiled attempt to avoid having to ask for assistance myself. I DO need a sparring partner, but I feel like it's more honest to admit it'd probably be asking you for a favor, rather than offering you one." Her tone was scientific- considerate, but lacking much in the way of cheerful bounce or playful intonation, matching the level expression she held.
A quick wave dismissed the clarification as unnecessary. "It's alright, even if you did want to chase me off. Your prerogative. Not like you owe me anything, you know?" She thought about his movements another moment or two, and added, "You're heavier on your feet than I am, but it really doesn't seem to slow you down, and again, that's not even factoring in your quirk if it helps you in a scrap. So- I'll ask instead of offering. How do you feel about sparring regularly as a favor to me? I can't rely on my quirk to subdue targets, so I really need to be a sharp as possible with my fists, and the window between "too green to be a challenge" and "entirely too strong to handle" is narrower than I'd like to admit."

It took a few days to satisfy Miroru that her observations on the comings and goings of her classmates were indicative of regular patterns. She wasn't big on wasting her time, and while she hadn't made the connection (and her family definitely hadn't spent any money diagnosing the condition), rejection and failure stung like a bitch. Rather than risk showing up when he wasn't there, Miroru stacked the deck to be sure that when she approached the grassy hill where Farrin trained on her own, chances were high that he'd be there.
She approached about what she estimated to be a good thirty minutes into his relatively regular time on the hill, dressed in her UA tracksuit, with her bookbag on her hip as she approached. "Hey- still dominating at King of the Hill? Any decent challengers?"

"Hello?"
Miroru stepped into what sure seemed like an empty martial arts studio or maybe just a repurposed store front, scratching her head in confusion. Was she in the right place? Really?
"Is this the right place for the creative combat workshop? Or did I get the address wrong?"
She knew she hadn't taken it DOWN wrong, but it felt more polite than openly wondering if the address had been listed incorrectly.
The redhead's mind spun with possibilities. Was this a trap? Had it already sprung? Maybe someone else had shown up earlier and already been kidnapped. Was she too late to help? Or was it on the level and she'd misread the time? The date?
What was going on?!

"... okay. I'll try to take your word on it, but you're making it pretty hard to buy that story, y'know," Miroru admitted. "But really, don't sweat the acronym bit. It doesn't always work out the way I hope. Not a big deal."
As Jun talked, Miroru listened in. "Yeah. I got that impression. Not how I plan to do things. I'm sort of- I dunno. Feeling around for the people that feel like we'd all do better if we built each other up and relied on each other. I want to prove that the lone gunman style of heroism is inefficient and dangerous."
A grimace crossed Miroru's expression as they mentioned knowing someone narrow minded. "Is that why you had an accident? Someone get a little too enthusiastic, or a little too careless? All this work to make it back to where you were due to someone not caring enough to watch how they hit you?"

"Yeah. Me too." That was all Miroru seemed willing to say on that front.
"I'm sure you do, you made it in. My point is there's gonna be more, and a lot of it, and you'll be saving yourself some time and effort if you make a point to show your skills to the jerks that need to see it to believe you belong here. That's all," Miroru clarified.
"You oughtta be bothered by it. You might have skin thick enough to handle it, but if they're picking on you, they're picking on others. It's not about whether you can take what they're dishing out, it's about stopping them from dishing it in the first place. Does that track?"
Freja replied, and Miroru's response was stark, stepping around to cut Freja off and stare right up at her in the eyes.
"Fuck the norm, then."
Her tone was biting, as the breeze tossed the fluff of her hair with every word. "If that's the norm, the norm's wrong, and it deserves to break into pieces. NOBODY deserves to get shit on for being who they are. You do something stupid? Sure, that might merit some giggles, but you. Are not. A joke. You're throwing yourself into the line of fire, and that deserves a little fucking respect." She turned and started to jog again. "If you won't put their faces into the dirt for being prejudiced little assholes, I'll do it myself. So if you really want everyone to get along, show them why you're here so they shut up before I deal with them."
She glanced at Freja, and smirked crookedly. "Don't believe you. You're here despite ridicule and every disadvantage you could have. That isn't terrible."
A nod. "Library works. What do you wanna study first?"
