There was Farrin, born and raised, who lost one parent to another, survived homelessness, and aspired to balance the invisible scales leveraged against him by his father. And then there was Oberon, the summation of those efforts, a being built by sifting dreams, strength personified, and heroism incarnate.
That's how he saw it, at least. The former wanted to be a hero. The latter was one. But there was some profound loss in the making. He was wading through the thickest haze in search of answers, some way to resolve the two into one.
Then he imagined Kenta leaping from the top rope, a mountainside in this instance, to body slam some poor unsuspecting gob below, and the bubbling tension of his thoughts cooled. "Yeah, no quirks fer' dis' climb, bud," he responded.
Farrin took another bite out of the sandwich, listening to Kenta's offered advice. He scarfed the food down, then replied, "I jus' ne'er really thought 'bout it. Wanted ta' be like me' mum early on, so heroism it was." He paused for a moment, recollection spinning between his ears and tugging on a distant memory, "I did think o' bein' a police officer once, was thinkin' what I'd do if I ne'er had me' quirk, but that's basically heroism, jus' on the quirkless level."
Some police officers had quirks and simply didn't aspire to heroism's scale, but much of the police force was quirkless. It was a fine pursuit when left uncorrupted, but that went for most positions of authority. Regardless, it didn't do much for his current predicament.
"Help! Help us!" A voice hollered from the streets far below.
There were no bangs, booms, or pops that would suggest explosives or gunfire, but clearly, something was wrong. "C'mon, we'll pick this up later. We've work ta' do," Farrin said, then leaped below.

Jun wasn't willing to vacate the hollows of the cave system quite yet. Farrin's bag was stuffed fat with gems and valuables. None like Jun's fossil collection, but surely enough to merit a high score. She was technically his competition, so leaving her behind was tactically sound, but it was wrong, and he knew it.
A forked road, maybe, but his decision made itself. Farrin exited the cave. Then, he mustered a rather large deceleration field a few meters from its mouth. It was almost like a net, albeit one that ranged many, many meters in diameter. The next shots that flew for the cave were caught and slowed to a snail's pace. The inner field also remained intact, slowing the approaching collapse of the cave system, or at least the entrance he had used, for a while longer.
Farrin wasn't going to dive further in with Jun. He didn't know fossils were involved, and with a full bag, just what could be gained? He would, however, safeguard the caves as best he could. The students above had loosed some rocks and gems with their blasts, simultaneously hindering anyone who entered. Now, their attacks would take longer to land, and the gems loosed from the caves would take longer to rise.
When Jun did emerge, Farrin would loose his fields, allowing the system to collapse. The more fields, and the larger in size, the more swiftly his quirk tired him out. But, it wasn't as though this was a challenge that involved direct combat. There weren't any rules against impeding each other's progress, but there were no fisticuffs to be had under the sea. He just needed to hold back the stupidity so Jun could focus on retrieving any other valuables she felt she needed and avoiding the geysers below. Then, they could all get the hell out of the depths.

It was absolute bliss for a fighter of Farrin's caliber. Skywalking under his own power required too much concentration for prolonged use. Jun's shields cost him nothing, though the selfishness of those lenses was quite clear. At least he wouldn't plague her focus any further. His feet were firmly on the ground again, and his fists flew.
One shot after another connected with Machina. So blood could be squeezed from metal. Farrin didn't go for lethal, but that didn't mean he took it easy on those who attacked him, his people, or the innocent. Air vacated Machina's lungs as another fist thudded against his gut. Then came the crack of Farrin's jab against the man's jaw.
Outside, Merodach leveled his hand cannon with Jun, but a hammer smacked the weapon out of place. Another shot shattered his left shoulder. A third blow knocked him on his ass a few meters back. "God dammit," he cursed, his left arm slumped. Snow dusted the streets, and a curtain of ice shot up, walling Jun off from the villain. Time for the kill shot.
When the girl undoubtedly tried to work her way through or around the ice, she would find her target missing. He teleported again. This time with his hand cannon raised. He should reappear just behind her. And he did.
He was, however, met with another hammer shot. "What?" he shouted. She had been waiting for it. The boy, their target, he was right. Merodach was being too predictable, and now it cost him. The weight of the hammer smashed into his injured shoulder, and the man twirled back, collapsing onto the ground.
A window shattered. Through it, Machina was sent flying, plummeting to the street below. Farrin stood at the window ledge, ready to chase his target down. In a blink, Merodach was gone. Then he was in the air. Machina slammed into his ally, and then the two disappeared-this time completely out of sight.
Farrin scanned over the streets below, then up toward the rooftop of the buildings across the street. Nothing. "Cowards," he spat, then leaped below, using a few deceleration fields to control his landing. "You okay?" He asked. A few moments later, the depressed filter over the world would collapse, the proper and full array of natural colors returning to the world. Still, the villains were gone. Their next move would be to inform the authorities and UAU of what happened.
The three villains, Machina, Merodach, and the woman who created the altered space, retreated. "We need to deploy more of the Fangs," Merodach pushed through clenched teeth. "Hitting him and his little friends in teams of two won't be enough. We pushed him too far with our earlier probes."
"Well, that's not our call to make. But, noted Mero. We'll see what he has to say about it."
"I had the situation handled," Machina pouted, leaping beside the others before Merodach teleported the trio yet again, crossing the greatest distances his quirk allowed.
"You hardly landed a blow. Collateral damage doesn't count. Why didn't you copy the boy's quirk?"
"I did," Machina replied, a smile creeping below his mask, a nearly-translucent field framed in crimson enwrapping the three of them, speeding the trio up. "That's why I wanted to stay."
"There are other uses for his quirk. We need to get back to base before your copy wears off."
A full retreat, though perhaps their loss was not as complete as initially expected.

It was complete and utter domination unshackled by the weight of regulation or inhibition. Okay, well, not entirely. Farrin could have hit a little harder and used stronger acceleration fields with his cannons, and Ylva probably could have done even more damage with that final move, but they would have to withhold their strength in the field as well. The lethal option was a last resort in the realm of heroism. "All life is precious," his mother used to say.
So, perhaps it was more apt to say they hadn't withheld within a range of apprehension. The result? The complete victory both of the students had sought. Farrin would more than make up for the mediocre score he received in the balloon challenge, courtesy of Rahul.
Farrin beamed ahead with the three flagpoles in hand, scouting for any last-second surprises. He would wait for Ylva to catch up, then repeat, keeping within sight lines in case he needed to back her up. It proved unnecessary. The return trip was uneventful. They sidestepped a few traps and returned to their starting location, the base, without any further conflict. The flags were captured, and the challenge came to an end.

He boomed through the battlefield, his explosive bounds whirling the winds every which way, blowing out the thick clouds that obscured all sight. The smog didn't relent entirely, but the air had cleared enough that color returned to balloon silhouettes. With that, he could make use of his linear cannons.
One crack of the cannon's fire and another point was added to his score. Two more points were added a moment later. Five. Then the black smoke rose, the devil's blood mixed into the white haze. It wasn't only the color that differed, but the proximity. Farrin didn't see any of the black smog in the distance. It was distinctly trailing him, rising wherever he went.
Farrin looked to his feet and therein lay the problem. The rabbits. It was him again. He employed a similar maneuver back at beta, albeit on a larger scale. Farrin's lips curled into an even deeper scowl. He had half a mind to knock the taste out of the lad's mouth.
No time. Farrin beamed across the field again, popping as many balloons as he could find until only one remained. Another crack as he fired his cannons. His score rose by one last point, but only after dropping ten, negating so much of the effort he had just put into the exercise. Another feckin green balloon was placed in his path. He didn't need to guess by who. The smoke was all but fully abated now. His placement was only just above the middlemost rank. Useless. The challenge would prove nothing to those outside.
Farrin's hand curled into a fist. He saw the lad and was just about ready to have words. But what was the point? Farrin loosed his balled-up anger back into an open palm. In dampening Farrin's placement, Rahul had neglected his own. Whatever drove a hero-prospect to devote themselves to impeding one particular peer, even at their own detriment, came from a twisted, broken place. There were other challenges ahead, challenges Farrin wouldn't lose.

The hourglass had Farrin's name on it. Every bead, every grain of sand was his to command. He whipped one arm aside, and two spheres of a nearly translucent field, framed in an emerald glow, formed. One was about three meters in diameter around Ylva, while the other covered the outer edge of the arena.
The shinobi student flew through the air, just narrowly avoiding the formation of the outer field. He threw three shurikens at Ylva, eyes wide with recognition. He might not know exactly what she was planning, but it was clear she was up to something. The shuriken, however, smacked into the inner field, the one around Ylva, and slowed to a snail's pace. Meanwhile, the multi-armed found himself caught in the outer field, moving at about the same speed as the shuriken. Farrin couldn't easily form a field on someone directly unless they were willing, but the temporal powers cared for distinctions. If that someone ran into a temporal field, that was on them.
With his targets of opportunity limited to one, the ninja darted toward Farrin. He lobbed another shuriken, then threw three kicks the time-turner's way. He was fast. Incredibly fast, but not Farrin fast. Farrin dodged the shuriken. One kick snapped into his side, forcing a curse from the Irishman's mouth. A raised guard deflected the second and third kick.
A flash of movement. Crack, crack, crack. Farrin landed two left jabs, followed by an uppercut, which sent the ninja soaring toward the arena's edge. He twisted, a shadow in the wind, and landed on his feet, then lunged forward.
Thirty.
Both fields collapsed, and Farrin leaped back behind Ylva. Glacial winds and glinting snow-covered enwrapped their surroundings. Ice specked the air around them, and a wash of arctic white obscured just about all else. The ninja, the bowmen, and the others approaching from the above ring; all of them were frozen.
Farrin shivered, each arm warming the other. "Yeah, I'd say that works," he chattered. He walked over and snatched up the flags. "Yuh' good ta' go?" He would offer a few moments later. When Ylva was able to do so, Farrin would lead the way back to their "base." Time for the W.

Morse Code was taken in more of the rescue-hero courses, and while Farrin would have to take those classes, he hadn't done so quite yet. He had, however, gotten the idea and replied with a thumbs up. The light Jun navigated the cave with had caught him off guard, but if it were a disruption tactic, she would have attacked or done something to impede his progress rather than try to communicate. Plus, he didn't know Morse code, but he recognized its use at least.
After the thumbs up, he tightened the esoteric grasp he had on his fields, forcing them to glow a brighter hue of green. He wanted to Jun to see them. Any mistaken touch against the cave walls, where his fields were, and she would slow down too, which could be dangerous. The only spots his field hadn't touched were those marked by the gleaning shine of a gem. If she wanted to grab more, he wouldn't stop her, but he went back to work grabbing a few more before approaching her and pointing to the mouth of the cave. She didn't have to follow, but if she was here when his field dropped... again, it could be dangerous. There was the very real risk of a cave-in.
With that, Farrin turned and began to swim back out. Another thunderous boom roared—more of those spheres. Whoever was whipping around these explosives, whatever form they took, he would challenge them to a sparring match later. Feckers had to know other students, even aside from Farrin and Jun, had entered the cave system by now.

Play wasn't much in his wheelhouse. The days were dotted with classes and training, and the countless hours of night were populated with, well, more training. HIs dorm was a depressing place these past few months. Lifeless and cold, without the warmth he dearly missed. Maybe an hour or two each week was allocated to the rudimentary gaming setup in his room and a few more hours spent sleeping, but otherwise, he was always out and about.
Today, though, he was in character. If he was going to play some baseball, even if only batting in the cages, he would play it right. He grabbed a bat from the rack and approached one of the vacant cages. The large screen framed behind the actual cage and net was odd, the young student unfamiliar its function until he made out the virtual figure. And, holy shite, it spoke.
"Oi heya, Momo," he responded, spinning the bat a few times before taking up a proper batter's position. He hadn't expected to be watched, but how hard could this really be? "Dun' know much 'bout the contest, but I plan on hittin some dingers."
Regurgitated baseball lingo. Basically, he was swinging for what would be some strong homeruns on a proper field. Earlier worries melted away as it became clear a machine would be spitting the ball his way rather than another person. A green light appeared, and an elongated tube fired the first ball.
Farrin's eyes flared, and though the ball was moving like a speedy twenty-year-old behind the wheel on a highway, to Farrin, it looked like the old granny holding up traffic. He smacked the ball, full force but at an odd angle. The ball rocketed, but it would have been a foul.
"Well, heh, we'll get there," he added with some jest.

Gold being the flags and glory being the boon of a swelling reputation. Farrin cared little for fame, but if he could catch someone like Sterling Soul's eye, maybe intern with her or another renowned hero, there was no telling what he might learn. And for that reason, he boomed ahead. Grab the flags and hall them back for the W.
There was only one obstacle in the way now. The big ol' bull charging against Ylva's grasp. Well, that and the rest of the students that were closing in. Ylva was right, he needed to move quick. Fortunately, quick was kind of Farrin's thing. He leaped across the icy pillars and platforms and landed hard against the central arena, the platform on which the flags stood. The bull had charged from one of the metal bridges connecting the arena to the above ring and was trying to push Ylva over the edge.
Not today, bud.
Farrin boomed ahead, then dropped into a slide, sweeping the muscular monster of student's feet out from under him. No matter Ylva's strength she would find the beast far more susceptible now, as he fell over sideways. Farrin wouldn't wait, however. He slid right back onto his feet and spun, firing an adhesive round at the bull's lower body.
Another arrow soared just past Farrin—the same as earlier. The spider and the ninja were approaching. It was time to make some decisions. "Yuh' more prone ta' fight er' flight? Farrin asked with a little whimsy, then thumbed toward the three objectives behind him, "Movin' fast is what I do. One o' us should run the flags back. I could stand n' fight the rest o' these guys as they show up, though, if yuh' prefer. If we both stay ta' fight, we risk bein' bogged down by numbers." Farrin was confident enough to tackle either job, so he would leave the decision to his teammate.

There were only so many reds left, only so many points to go around. And between the participants and their prey were myriad obstacles. Farrin swatted on such an obstacle aside. Then another. And another. The honey splatter hadn't caught him, but like a bull against the cape, Farrin charged whatever red targets remained, even if the bulk of them floated among the hornets.
With a skip and a hop, he dodged the mess of glue and honey beneath his feet, wading through the haze, and charged ahead. The smoky veil saved the balloons from a ranged assault, too great a risk of hitting an unseen green balloon behind his intended target, which meant getting up close. Fists flew like bullets, and each balloon burst with a satisfying pop. A slow-mo Joe punch wouldn't likely do more than send a soaring, but not when hit at this speed.
Still, the math wasn't adding up. While others competed for those few remaining targets outside the smokescreen, Farrin bounced back and forth within. There was less competition, but even then, it was clear the challenge was drawing to a close. Each balloon broken was another grain of sand falling down the hourglass.
"The feck is his problem?" Farrin asked himself.
If the hare-brained punk hadn't had it out for him, Farrin would've easily topped the leaderboard. Instead, he was clawing his way up to a mediocre score. "Every moment counts," he continued. An affirmation. No time to dwell on the whys; he could only concern himself with how to climb higher. So, Farrin darted into the thickest of the white smog and went hunting.

Well, not gold exactly, but it might as well have been. A thousand glinting lights dotted the cave-like stars in the night sky. There might not be anything to match a fossil's value, but the points would stack in Farrin's favor against most of the others if he could both collect the present gems and, therefore, deny the others its bounty.
Farrin slammed on the temporal pedal and dove further into the cave. He pried a gem, maybe a ruby, from the ceiling. Then another, and another. Each was pocketed in a sack tied to Farrin's belt, which was quickly growing heavy.
The cave thundered and shook. The stony guts of the earth grumbled, and between forming crevices, silt and pebbles spilled out into the cave, spreading with the current. Farrin turned, and there lay the source. A swirling sphere crashed into the mouth of the cave. Were the others trying to loosen the gems or trap him inside? The former wasn't a terrible idea, but they had to have seen him enter. The latter... outright recklessness at best.
A scowl crept across Farrin's face. A turn of the wrist and he laid a field of temporal deceleration over the cave walls. A few holes in the field formed around the glimmering gems. That would hold back the damage for a time, but even his fields couldn't induce absolute stasis. Eventually, the place would cave in.
'Faster, need ta' move faster,' he thought, scooping up more of the gems. Another crash of the swirling spheres against the cave. There would be damage elsewhere through the cave, but for now, he was safe from collapse. Another gem in the bag. Almost full.

It was clear as day in Farrin's determined gaze. Jun beat back their attacker's offensive and allowed Farrin to counterattack. One he would not waste.
"Thannnnk you," he chirped, leaping onto the first shield and then ascending the makeshift stairway.
It sure beat skywalking. There was no need to divide his attention between the "ground" below him and the opposition ahead. Farrin beamed up the shields. Before the villains crossed half the distance between their teleportation point and the street below, he had met them. Farrin buried his fist in Machina's gut and, in a mid-air spin, threw him Merodach's way.
The brains of the duo teleported again. Predictable. One of the shields below shot up just ahead of Farrin. Jun was on top of things. Farrin kicked off the shield, throwing himself into a backward tackle. The back of his head cracked against Merodach's nose. Blood spewed down the villain's face. Some of it straight into Farrin's mane. Nasty...
The same shield dropped below Farrin, giving him a foothold to land on. He spun into a kick that rocketed the villain down into the streets. Just before the crash, Merodach disappeared again—this time behind Jun. And Machina, who had smacked into a building side a moment prior, turned his attention to Mood Ring as well, winding up another swing of his chain and anchor.
"Doncha go thinkin I forgot 'bout you!" Farrin shouted.
He kicked off the shield again. As he cut through the distance, Farrin fired a stun round Merodach's way. He was quick, though, and the villain backpedaled a step. Armed with those hand cannons, he could still take a shot at Jun, but he bought her a second or so. Meanwhile, he turned his attention ahead and crashed into Machina, both men smashing through one of the building's windows. It was the cleanest attack, but he kept the villains off balance. Now, they just needed to go for the kill shot. Figuratively, of course.
