Farrin leaned toward the lattermost possibility. The fact remained that he feared failure, but there was little some Yokai could do that his sifting nightmares hadn't. He was faced with a thousand dreadful realities every night and had been without any healing touch or aura for months now. Isolation, for those you cared for most to be so far from reach, was prison enough. What could some fox do?
The young time-turner ran. And ran. And ran. Another shout drew him north. Then he zoomed back west. Games. Somewhere out there, a set of armor black as night and with a single evil eye watched. It was enough to garner Farrin's attention. He knew that armor.
"Okay then, I'll play along," he said flatly, then approached.
But as he closed the distance, the armor faded into smoke and bled into the dark skies above. Or maybe it wasn't there, to begin with. Was that time-turned mind playing tricks on him? Just more questions. Always more questions. Regrets and grief rained over his mental garden on the regular and grew enough curiosities. He didn't need any more. He didn't need this. So, he shot back in Josie's direction. He'd find her, they could search for another minute or two, and then head back. Ten minutes spent running around the woods at night felt like ten hours in his mind. This curiosity would not kill the cat.

The rules explicitly stated one student could not target another with their quirks. Farrin, however, was not targeting anyone. He was summoning deceleration fields in the shape of some rather large walls just ahead of the competition, and they were failing to avoid said fields. Nothing direct about that.
Perhaps good news would be coming in threes because his decel fields were working wonders, and the next thing he knew, Josie was flying up above the track. "Deadly! Absolutely deadly!" Farrin shouted with whimsy, taking on his mother's Irish lingo for "brilliant."
Now that he didn't need to worry about leaving her so far behind, Farrin could commit to the race in full, just as he originally intended. It was time to grab another of those absolute wins. He leaned forward, his eyes narrowed, and their glow intensified. Another field formed, this one enwrapping his bike. Forget the gizmo boost. Now, he was zooming.
The air cracked as sound itself was left in Farrin's wake. The bike beamed forward, blasting through the competition. He dipped left of one competitor, then weaved right around a rod, spinning three chains around as an obstacle. Then, it was all about acceleration. Farrin pedaled as hard as his legs could. He was a ground-bound fighter jet, or so it felt.
Some of the other contestants fell off their mounts. Others tried to use their gimmicks to close the gap. One even fired what looked like a turtle shell his way, but nothing landed. First place would be his in a matter of seconds.

Concern picked at the back of the man's mind. Had he overdone it? The boisterously confident dragon had spared much the mock setting of the worst damage, but still, Beta had been marked and scorched in large swaths of burning black stone and debris. And he wasn't finished yet.
Further down the block from the hero professor's landing, Farrin pulled himself up into a seat position inside the crater he had been planted in. SuperNova was one of the professors he trained with most often, and he hadn't brought home a win yet. The giant of a man was deceptively fast and absurdly strong. A few coughs to clear his throat, and the young time-turner looked to the newcomer, the wee dragon lad that must have been the source of those beams of light that intercepted SuperNova's own.
"Yeah, yeah, I'll be fine," Farrin coughed up, then stood his height.
His hero outfit had taken the worst of the damage, but it was seared and shredded up and down his body. The short barrel poking out from his left glove was bent out of shape as well. That limited his ranged capabilities. A quick time-turned glance over the battlefield and found things had changed. One of his peers was tangled up with Apparel, and up above, Jun was locked in with Stronghold. Then, of course, there was another issue. Ms. Mai, or "Blazing Djinn," was taunting them before disappearing into the black haze of those bunnies. Bad news as far as the eye could see.
"No, we need ta' draw 'im up ta' her," he shifted his gaze to Stronghold above before looking back to SuperNova. Was it a secreted kindness or the professor's trademark confidence that stilled his hand and his attack? "Jun, er' Mood Ring, might no' be able ta' hold out up there. We can't jus' leave her to that alone. If she goes down, Stronghold can move unchecked. We need ta' bring SuperNova up above n' maybe give a three on two a go. Hopefully, draw in some o' the people we've left."
"YOUR ENDEAVORS SHALL PROVE USELESS, YOUR PLANS FUTILE, HEROES," SuperNova boomed, the derision a little too convincing.
"Get his attention, n' knock out what beams o' his yuh' can. I'm goin' ta' try ta' get behind 'im, I know I can hit hard enough ta' launch 'im upward," he managed that much during their training sessions, "then if you can follow up, try ta' knock 'im in Stronghold's direction. Keep an eye open fer' Ms. Mai, though. She's out 'ere somewhere"
Whether Sirius was on board with the plan or not, Farrin would have to make his move. There was a very real possibility Jun wouldn't hold out against Stronghold. Better a three v two now than let Jun go down and risk a two v two later. So, Farrin blasted ahead, zigging and zagging, throwing up deceleration fields when possible to slow those attacks that made it through. Heat flashed by his side, the pro-hero professor's attacks moving as beams of light. Ideally, with his attention divided, Farrin could eventually blitz the giant and drop his weight low into his legs, then thrust upward with the hardest right uppercut he could muster in an attempt to send the star shooting up into the skies.

It was like the largest, angriest gecko and huffed one webbed foot over the ship's railing, then another. Just beyond its step was the fiery pirate, splayed out across the deck. Yeah, Farrin had met him head-on, alright, and knocked the fella's lights out. A few dark singes blended with his outfit but might be spotted in a few spots that burned through the material, revealing flesh. No significant damage yet.
The giant lizard, however, posed a bit of a problem. It was larger than a van, though smaller than a semi. In truth, its size was hardly the problem. Instead, the issue was it occupied the bulk of this side of the deck and knocking it too far back would see the big reptile collide with those fleeing for the lifeboats. Hit too hard, and it would cut the people off; don't hit it hard enough, and it was liable to shake off any damage.
So, Farrin was going to have to play distraction for now. "Oi, let's see how tough ya are yuh' swamp drinkin', piss-eyed, snake swallower! Yer bloodline is weak n' I dun' you will not survive the winter!"
Did Farrin intend to kill the oversized gecko? Absolutely not, but he needed its attention firmly locked on him. And that's exactly what he got. The lizard rushed in his direction and snapped at him. Farrin leaped, then kicked off its head, throwing himself several meters back, further from the lifeboats. He needed distance, more room to knock the beastie about without the threat of injuring people.

Something was to be said about the crew always sending a stoner out with his pet dog amid a crime scene, but there was reason enough to remain engaged. While all the signs pointed toward mischief, there was always the chance danger was present. So, Farrin looked around and listened.
"Yeah, that's n' option, but if der' is merit ta' all this, well... we might get split up, gang."
Another shout. This one was closer and came from a singular direction as dictated by normal physics. Farrin ran his thumb against his forefinger, thoughts stirring, aiming for the perfect response, but there wasn't one. There was the chance, however small, that this was real and someone was in danger.
"Right, I am gonna speed about, but I'll be keepin' it close," he warned, "Jus shout if yuh' need anythin'."
With that, Farrin beamed off to the east. The air boomed as he crossed between trees, then zipped his way back and forth through the woods, slowly making his way back to Josie. Nothing yet. Not a soul in sight. No blood. No footprints he could make out. It was clear... so far.

She was pedaling, and Farrin hadn't taken off quite yet. The dust settled from behind those that blasted ahead. He would overtake them eventually. Nobody outran...rode...whatever Chronokinesis. Farrin hadn't met a student, or even a teacher yet that could outpace him when moving full speed.
There were more than a few, though, at least a dozen, all around Farrin and Josie. No enhanced speed and no gizmos activated. An explosion boomed just beside him. Words spoken too soon. One student flipped the switch and blasted ahead. Okay, it was time to make some moves.
"Alrighty, Jo, I'm gonna see what dis' thing can do!" He shouted for Josie to hear.
Farrin thumbed a digit sized cover open on the right handle of his bike, then pressed the button beneath down. Two exhaust pipes extended out from the back of the bike. Flames spat out and sent his bike flying forward. Why a bicycle would need exhaust pipes and where the flames were coming from, he had no fecking clue, but it was clear a bunch of the bikes had some sort of "boost" capability.
Farrin sped ahead. He zoomed past seven other bikes, then began to slow. A quick burst of speed rather than a persistent one. That worked. He wouldn't be out of Josie's sight should she fire up some of her bike's gimmicks to catch up. It was time they left some of the competition behind.

His fist clenched, prepared to whip a field into being, but otherwise, he was willing to play along. Elijah's knife burst the balloon, and the other student was soaked. It would be a lie to say some small part of Farrin didn't want to laugh. It wasn't against the rules. Instant karma, even for a thought.
Had he known what Elijah had planned, Farrin might have been able to muster up a temporal deceleration field on time to defend against the attack. Lasers, like actual speed-of-light lasers and those quirks that could create them, operated at levels even his time-turned speed couldn't counter. They required preemptive action, like dodging just before the shot was fired or summoning a deceleration field beforehand. So, the best Farrin could do was turn as Elijah moved to take the shot in place of his balloon.
Farrin flew several meters, the top half of his body turned over so he took the beam on his ribs and just below the shoulder, like he was cradling a baby. He spun out and then slammed against the tile floor. Pain burst below his arm and clenched his jaw. No hero outfit. No extra protection. He was in his gym uniform, and that beam seared.
"Oh, a feckin' smart one are yuh," he cursed through grit teeth.
Farrin picked himself up and put the still-intact balloon in his basket. Yeah, that's right, the balloon is still safe, arsehole. Farrin stood, and the tile fell. Or began to. Farrin felt the sudden shift, the split-second drop that brought the flooring down a fraction of an inch, giving faster students the slightest chance to escape. Farrin qualified. He jumped up, snatching a second balloon out of the air, then slammed back on the ground. This tile was safe. His side felt like it was on fire, but his face was framed in a smirk. Two balloons down, even after foul play.

The butterfly, that is. Its wings were superimposed in his vision, and then the antenna sprouted. "Am I outta me' feckin' tree?" He mumbled a saying he recalled his mum asking one of his uncles, usually referring to one's drunkenness, though today Farrin was wondering if he was drugged. He definitely was. Isamu was making a move, and you won't believe it, but a fecking blue troll comes off the top rope to lend a hand.
Yeah, no way he wasn't absolutely hammered. Had to be.
"Oh, come off it, what the feck is goin' on 'ere?"
Spores washed over Farrin flesh. His head was banging; he was apparently part bug, and a troll was playing support to his heroics. Isamu's was yapping his gob, talking shite, there were still others to deal with even if this shitehawk was saying he would fight them two on one. One problem at a time, though, Isamu was charging.
"Fast?" Farrin smirked.
He didn't have time to warn her. A temporal field fit firmly to Yoko's troll form would envelop the girl. He had been told it was like taking an adrenaline shot to the heart or something crazy like that. There was no telling how she would react, but she would have a little time to sort her thoughts as she was accelerated. Still, he couldn't rely on that alone to save her. There was always the chance she still didn't move on time, so Farrin threw himself forward, crossing his arms into a guard stance. His hero outfit was incredibly strong, thanks to Kei and Ana's efforts, especially his gloves. The pounding headache made it difficult to focus on a proper offensive, but he could buy Yoko a moment to act with her newfound speed.

If the fox sought the peace of solitude, why haunt people on what is generally considered one of the "scariest" times of the year? That was a hunting pattern, which meant malicious intent. Unless, of course, it was trying to help people overcome their fears. Damn, now he felt bad again.
"Well, I'm no expectin' we'll find anythin' anyway," he admitted.
Farrin believed in provable science, not magic. Even in these crazy, quirked up times, there was an explanation behind everything. If anything, the existence and functionality of quirks only reinforced this worldview. Quirks followed rules. The offspring of those possessing quirks were more likely to have quirks of their own- often related to their parents. And quirks themselves were expressed through "quirk factors," cells that modified the human body in one way or another, granting it superhuman abilities.
Farrin trekked further into the forest, still mulling over the possibilities. Another scream wailed through the woods, but it was without direction this time. Undoubtedly closer, but he couldn't pinpoint where from. Almost as if the sounds were triggered from several directions. "Maybe it's a person, someone usin' their quirk ta' mess wit' people around Halloween time?" He asked out loud, not really expecting an answer.
It should have been a serious situation, but no two voices were exactly alike. The same scream couldn't be coming from multiple directions. Was this all just one grand prank?

Well, that was certainly forced. A quizzical brow lifted, and Farrin leaned onto one of the bike's pedals, ready to wheel on over to Josie and see if she was alright. Decisions drew the tears in time that saw threads split and reality change forever, but this was no choice at all. There would be other challenges, but not many more friends.
The rules dictated every remain at their starting position, but Farrin wheeled over to Josie. "Oi, hows 'bout we all scooch over one," he said to the young lad in position next to her. Confusion gripped the lad and the two other students who were originally between Farrin and Jo, but they relented, scooting over so Farrin could back up into the starting spot next to his buddy.
"Yuh alright?" he then asked, turning to Josie. "Nervous er' somethin'?"
The Sports Festival was a spectacle worldwide. Who knew how many millions might be watching? Maybe Jo was just getting the jitters. A lot of students did. "I wouldn't lose me' lunch over it. I dun' a few o' these challenges already n' they're no' too bad. No' sure if yuh' looked over all the rules, but each o' our bikes has two gizmos built in, too. Maybe somethin' useful ta' help level the playin' field. C'mon, we got this."
A few thumbs up and nods of acknowledgment were exchanged between the judges and coordinators. Maybe his moving over a few spots delayed things a little, but the decision-makers appeared okay with it. The bell rang, and the race began. A few students beamed off, but Farrin started at a light pedal, ensuring he didn't pull too far from Josie. He could big finish later, for now he'd make sure she got a respectable placing.

They would need to be. He traced the bike’s parts and gave them a good rattle, but like the pedals, it was firm. There weren’t any rules against using one’s quirk on their own vehicle in this challenge.
So far, Farrin had seen mixed results in his Sports Festival challenges. The balloon bonanza was a bust. That shitehawk, Rahul, had it out for Farrin for some reason, and so the time-turner only managed a middling score. The geyser dive, while difficult, saw Farrin come in second next to Jun. Not bad, but not a win either. Then, in the capture the flag challenge, Farrin and Ylva blew the competition out—an absolute win.
He needed another absolute win. Ten people watching, ten million people watching, it made no difference to him as long as those eyes included some of the nation's top pro heroes like Sterling Soul. An internship with her or another hero of her caliber would undoubtedly see him improve further, and Farrin needed to improve.
Josephine was a part of this challenge, though. He didn't want to blow out a friend, but he needed the big W here. Still, maybe she would come in second place. Make a good showing for herself as well. Who knew with the gadgets these bikes were equipped with? Each had two “gimmicks,” so anything was possible. Farrin looked three bikes to the right, to Jo, and gave her a thumbs up before turning ahead. Any second, the bell would ring, and the race would start.

There is a myth that during October nights, a fox spirit stalked the Senbonzakura Forest. The rumor predated quirks, so it had to be a myth, right? Apparently, it brought about people’s fears; some believed it messed with them, and others thought it was trying to help them overcome those fears. Either way, there was a massive ten million yen bounty on the thing. Farrin didn’t care much for extravagant wealth, but come on, if it was real, this could be easy money.
“I mean, if it was, someone woulda at least caught a picture er’ soemthin like that by now, right?”
A whisper. A scream? It couldn’t be both, but he certainly heard something like that. It was a familiar voice too, but he couldn’t quite place where from.
“Yuh hear that?” He asked.
Were these visions and experiences particular to each individual? Could they see and hear each other’s fears, if the effect was real at all, or did everyone experience the fox’s abilities in isolation? There was only one way to find out, and hopefully that way would see Farrin and Jo become rich overnight.

Pirates? Seriously? Like a pirate ship sporting a Jolly Roger and galleon cannons was attacking them? What on earth was the world coming to?
Those cannons may look old, but they packed enough punch that they actually gouged the transport ship. People are shuffling, panic is building, and the authorities are getting to work. Farrin had a preliminary license, which meant he was allowed to help.
He pulled away from the rails and sped between the fleeing and frightened passengers. The ship groaned as it suffered another blow. The pros kept it plugged, but the work shared heroism’s greatest kryptonite. It was a reactionary measure, usually performed only after the damage was done.
Farrin jumped atop the railing along the ship’s port side—a massive translucent wall framed in emerald formed between the two ships. The thunderous boom of the pirate’s next salvo was cut short as cannonballs met a temporal deceleration field.
The borders, however, would need to be handled more personally. Farrin dropped from the railing, then beamed the two closest attackers. He knocked one in the gut, doubling the man over, then swept his legs out from under him. The second was ready, flames engulfing his body as he activated his quirk. He rocketed forward. Farrin met him head-on. Fists and flames flew, and the real fight began.

No life and death stakes, no blood and sweat shed, and no battle between boy and hero. This was more personal. A desire that beat Farrin's soul like a drum. A large and capable ship like this made for excellent transport, but it would be a lie to say he didn't want to sail out and meet these islands himself.
If one traced the O'Rourke line back enough, they would find an army of warriors and sailors alike. His bloodline was born of Celts and Vikings; they were just as home on the sea as they were walking the emerald glades of the Isles. Farrin prided himself on being a capable combatant, but his dip during the geyser challenge disillusioned him of any innate talents at sea. Farrin could swim just fine, but the dark depths of the ocean played twin to many of his sifting nightmares. Even a moment's hesitation could cost lives, so he would shed himself of those concerns by exposure therapy if necessary.
And yet, that wasn't the only reason Farrin signed up for this little expedition. Curiosity came knocking, and it was a party of two. He wasn't free from the innate questions everyone was asking since the day of the attack. What exactly were these sea beasties? Experiments of some sort, the results of the "illegal research," but there had to be more to it than that, which looped back to his other question. Was Ouroboros somehow involved?
So here he was, leaning against the rails at the ship's bow, watching for the island on which they would be spending the next few days. It might have made for a pleasant getaway if his gut wasn't warning him of the inevitable danger.
