His eyes shone gold with chronokinesis. No sense waiting. Once night fell, the smoke signal would be pretty useless, though the fire might catch someone's eyes. Still, better they got off the island sooner than later. Farrin didn't want to be stuck with Rahul anymore than Rahul did with him.
A thin net-like field corralled the smoke in temporal deceleration. It slowed and gathered, becoming a bolder, easier mark. Maybe he should try shaping the fields into letters. A giant SOS in the sky? The more intricate the field though, the more focus required. The more focus, the more taxing the effort. No, a large blot of inky smoke would do. Rescue heroes and JCG would know what to look for.
"How many o' those bunnies can yuh' make at once?" He asked.
There was more kindling than time. Plentiful though the trees were, the human body could only go for a few days without water. Boiling salt water was an option, but with what implements would they catch the freshwater condensation? Vegetation was their best bet, but even then, the odds weren't great if it came to such a timely length.
"If nobody finds us by tomorrow, we might need ta' burn a lot more, create a larger signal."
Burning all their resources at once was too great a risk to take prematurely, but each passing hour would shift the scales inch by inch. There was another option, temporal deceleration, but it was not an idea Farrin wished to entertain. And given the rbf pasted across Rahul's visage, he wouldn't like it either. Fella clearly wanted nothing to do with Farrin, a bold inverse in his attitude during the Sports Fest challenge, where his eyes were firmly fixed on the time-turner. Please, just let someone spot the damn signal... soon.

"W-was that thing 'ere last time I was around?" he asked. Definitely not, right? He would have remembered a little robo-roller bounding about when Kei helped him with the cannons. It wasn't pertinent information, but curiosity and all that. Clearly, Kei had been busy.
"Anyways, yeah, I wanted ta' ask yuh' fer some help wit' some new kit."
Farrin stepped further into the room, approaching the workstation Kei was standing near, and pulled out his phone. His finger danced across the screen, bringing up a video of UAU's own Ms. Mai, or Yuki Onna if going by her pro-hero name, apprehending a criminal with her many scarves. It was her own variation of the binding cloth style of combat, which wasn't entirely unseen in hero society but certainly required no small amount of skill to utilize.
"I was wonderin' if yuh' could whip up some bindin' cloth fer' me? I've a bunch o' bands n' belts wrapped 'round me arms I've used as cuffs on criminals when on patrol er ta' apply pressure ta' wounds which got me thinkin, 'why no' integrate it inta me arsenal? I've the cannons yuh' made fer' long range, n' me mitts fer' close," he eyed a clenched fist before unclenching it, "but some bindin' cloth could be used ta' apprehend the lower level dimwits quickly er' close distance on the stronger crooks."
He would need to train in this new binding cloth style, of course, but Farrin prided himself on being something of a combat savant. A few weeks of practice and he would make the cloth dance around the opposition.

He wasn't sure what to ask to begin with. Memories flashed like film behind his eyes. Shadowboxing up atop his hill at the back of UAU's training fields. His nightly sprints along the track. And, of course, more heroics classes. There wasn't much web surfing beyond happenings in Eastern Europe, where he last knew Sada to be.
"I 'preciate all the help n' explanations though. I really jus' came ta' park take in the game a bit, had a grand time I did, so all the rest is icin' on the cake."
Farrin took the card and looked it over. A little reminder of a day all his own. Not the hero-to-be, Oberon, but Farrin's. He would have to find Freja somewhere in all the mess that was the Sports Festival. She would knock this particular competition out of the park.
"It was a pleasure meetin yuh' though, er', well, meetin yuh' over dis' thing 'ere. N' thanks again fer' the info n' prizes. Maybe I'll be able ta' make it ta' one o' em Giants games."
'The golden bazookas sent you,' easy enough to remember. Farrin wasn't at all familiar with vtube culture, but that didn't mean there was nothing of interest to be found at the merch stand. You never know what you might find. All in all, a successful outing before the games began in earnest inside the festival arena. There, only first place would do.

Ignoring the bruises and scrapes, Josie was in decent shape. There was no reason to believe that would change over the next few hours. So, Farrin deposited her under the shade of a small tree line canopy. The small island's resources were rather sparse, but they had some wood to work with, and that wasn't nothing.
"We'll make our own luck," Farrin sighed, making some attempt at optimism. "Think I'll take a few trees down first. Yer's bunnies burstin' should be 'nuff ta' dry 'em all out, set 'em ablaze fer' some natural smoke too. Might be at this fer' a while so."
No need to finish explaining. Quirks were like muscles and just as susceptible to overuse and abuse. If Rahul's bunnies burst with enough force, the kinetic, chemical, and other sorts of energy involved would make any nearby wood easier to burn later. They might need to take a break and possibly keep warm, depending on what nightfall temperatures felt like.
A few moments of personal solitude. He would work with Rahul out of necessity, but that didn't mean he liked it. Fella clearly had it out for him back during the Sports Festival. Miserable shite.
Chronokinetic speeds and strength made logs out of a few trees further from those he laid Josie under. One by one, he lugged them over to the beachhead and deposited them a fair distance from where they washed up. Hopefully, they were already dried out, but if not, Rahul's quirk could likely handle it.

Pick any of the above, the point is Farrin had an idea! And now he was roaming the Support Lab halls in search of the trusty engineer and designer extraordinaire, Kei Hada. He hadn't seen the lad in quite a while, but they were in separate courses, so it made some sense, at least.
At time-turned speeds, it didn't take long to find Kei in one of the many labs. A weekday evening meant most classes were over, and Kei was as dedicated to his craft as Farrin was to training. Curiosity gripped Farrin, and he watched as Kei went about his work, but when the lad seemed to take a step back, the hero-student would make himself known. It is best not to come barging in and startle the engineer when he was tinkering with something potentially dangerous.
"Oi, hey there, lad. Long time no see," he said, starting into the room. "How's the craic?" A pause followed, swift realization striking Farrin's mind. He still pulled the Irish lingo out pretty often, but only Sada, Kenta, and a few other folks like those at Above & Beyond really knew what he was asking. "I mean, erm, how's it goin?"
Small talk and its rather low ranking on Farrin's specialties was a topic he looped back to each time he and Kei met up, but in this instance, it came from genuine curiosity. Though they weren't "hanging out all the time" type buddies, Kei was of the good sort or seemed as much, and Farrin trusted his gut regarding those judgments.

Stoke the fires of competition! Farrin knew his greatest sin to be that of pride. But, well-regulated pride was a good thing. It brewed confidence and reinforced one's self-worth, stimulated action when fear threatened with hesitation and stillness. In this particular instance, it meant Farrin really wanted first place. It didn't matter what the prize was.
"Contact, power, exit velocity, and potential distance," he repeated, the smile still framing his face as the launcher fired again.
Farrin swung, full force, and the smack of the bat against the ball boomed through the field. Another baseball blasting off again. Wait, would that have been another foul? For all of Farrin's power, and despite his place of upbringing, he actually wasn't all that familiar with the rules, which could prove to be quite problematic. Well, he would undoubtedly score well in most of the listed domains, at least.
"Well, I dun' know how I'd do in a real game, but I know I can hit the thing hard," he huffed with a chuckle. "So, how'm I doin' so far?" There were others with quirks that would make them great for the game, and this competition, but Farrin carried both speed and power behind his swing, he just wasn't exactly sure which hits would count in a real game. Hopefully he was still scoring well for the competition so far. Baseball game and a hotdog maybe? Now that would be a taste of home.

Farrin clung to the floating debris, survival tightening his grip. Clarity washed over his mind and seeped down into the bedrock until everything was made clear. The trained hero-student took hold and Farrin looked his surroundings over. His story didn't end with a watery grave.
Rolling waves obscured any nearby lifeboats, but there would undoubtedly be some sea rescue heroes out looking for survivors before long. He just had to survive the next few hours. Well, he and the few others unfortunates that didn't make it to the lifeboats. Grit. Determination. These things wouldn't allow the students to drown. They had jobs to do, futures to live, and causes to fight for, which drove them to survive.
Farrin pushed away from the debris and swam for a not-so-distant island. Aside from the burning wreckage behind them, it was the only thing of note in sight. A large wall of temporal power formed behind Farrin and the others. He couldn't slow the entire ocean, but they were swimming with the current now. The waves that threatened to drag their overexerted selves came less frequently. The effect would only last for about five minutes, but if the current held, it would make their little swim easier.
When he reached shore, Farrin found two familiar figures dotting the beachfront: Josie, which was good news, and Rahul. No comment. He turned over and dropped into the sand. "E'eryone alright?" He asked, his eyes shut but his ears open to the others. "I'm sure there'll be some sea rescues along soon 'nuff. Maybe we make a fire, smoke signal n' such er' somethin', yuh know, when we've rested up n' what have yuh."

Stellar's repertoire of super moves was an impressive display, to be certain, but time wasn't the most cooperative bedfellow. The temporal flow moved at one speed or another. It was a tributary he willed into a lazy river or aggressive rapids until it joined once more with the thread, temporal sea.
His ruby eyes wandered for a moment. He hadn't paid much mind to the antics playing out just a few moments prior. Silence was his weapon of choice against the ungrateful troll's comments and the little back and forth that followed. Their quirks, however, were the subject of time-dilated study. The most profound revelations so often hid among the seemingly unrelated details. He couldn't shoot shadow arrows, physically alter his form, or fire freezing space magic, but his answers might just be hiding in the mess of it all.
Farrin's gloved hand rose, curiosity drawing him to Stellar's quirk, but before it could travel more than a few inches, hesitance weighed his hand back to his side. There was no telling what emotion he might toy with and whether or not it would be felt strongly enough to bash the bricks and mortar of his mental fortress open. He knew the feel of Chronokinesis. That would be enough.
Soon after, they were split into teams, so Farrin drew away from the others and gave May a friendly nod when they created enough distance. "alrighty, so pointers. Eh, clearly I dun' know much 'bout yer' quirk but I know e'erythin 'bout fightin' up close. Yuh' mind tellin' me how exactly yer' quirk took shape in that instance yuh' mentioned earlier? Oh, n' I'm a second-year student," he answered her earlier question.
"Anyway, I've practiced wit' this little project o' mine fer' a while now," he would explain when it came time to discuss his own endeavors. Farrin retrieved the coin from his pocket again and gave it a flip. This time, he encased half of the coin in an acceleration field and the other half in a decelerating counterpart. A few sparks crackled outward from where the fields met, and minute yet visibly bright tears formed. "Pressin 'em against one another causes some damage," he spoke through grit teeth, "but it's like grindin' stones together. I dun' know how I can get 'em ta' cooperate."

Farrin threw his weight onto his back foot and hopped away. The flames crawled across the black dust cloud, but at this range even he couldn't avoid the impending boom entirely. There were too many dust particles and too much smoke, and that didn't factor in the many flammables on board and nearby. This chunk of the ship was about to blow.
Beads of sweat raced down Farrin's back. His hands raised, and a deceleration field rose with them, forming a wall. The trail of flame boomed into an inferno. The force of the explosion whipped out in every direction, held by his field only for a split-second before lashing as the time-turner and carrying him through the air.
Pain cracked through Farrin's spine as his back smashed against the ship's rail. Smoke stabbed at the cloud, and debris rained into the sea. His world had been robbed of color, and the words that reached his ears were dull and without nuance.
"Feckin," he could barely speak, unsuccessfully shaking away the confusion, "bells been rung."
He fell backward over the boat and into the abyss. It was there in the dark he saw it again. His hand reached for another in the depths. All light was extinguished. Silence.
He gasped and choked on water as bubbles blew out his nose and mouth. Farrin recognized the shite situation and swam. Pumped his arms and legs, willed them into the movement, and followed those damn bubbles to the surface. He broke back into the daylight and whipped his head about. Color restored, his hearing... a work in progress, but he made for the closest piece of floating debris and latched on. He had to catch his breath and then look for others who might need help.

Yeah, the gloves had eaten the blow, but the barrel of his right linear cannon was wrecked. Ana would have to fix that up a little later. Hopefully, he wouldn't need it to finish this fight.
The blue troll was on the move, a very fast move courtesy of his quirk, and she hit hard. Farrin aimed his left glove toward the others and fired off a few more stun rounds. His aim was as shaky as his words, his head still pounding, but they weren't entirely off the mark. With some luck, he would score a few hits and take the rest of the henchmen out without the commitment of a continued full-on brawl.
Isamu, however, was inbound. "On it," Farrin clipped. He drew back a step, then shut chronokinesis down. At this range, he didn't need it and he wouldn't let the throbbing headache or fuzz throw him off his game during this one singular blow. When Isamu was close enough, Farrin would throw a shot for his jaw, an uppercut this time.
Chronokinesis would fire up again after the swing. He wasn't about to risk the others remaining on their feet and itching for the fight. As strong as his suit was, a bullet to the brain would make the headache infinitesimal. If all went well, though, Isamu would be down and out, leaving the others in disarray. Maybe Stellar's every word hadn't stuck, but those six were swirling around Farrin's mind. He was one of the school's most well-honed combatants in terms of hand-to-hand combat, but it required no small effort to admit he was struggling with his special technique. Super and Ultimate moves as they were named among Hero Society.
After a moment's silence, Farrin stepped forward from the group. "I'll go," he offered, "So I'm Farrin, Farrin O'Rourke, also known as Oberon," the name still felt foreign to him, "eh, keepin' it short fer' now, I can speed things up n' slow 'em down." He pulled a coin from his pocket and then flipped it in the air. Stellar said she was familiar with their quirks, but the distance between reading the details off a file and watching a quirk in action could be massive.
A small, nearly translucent field framed in a greenish hue would encase the coin. Completely encased, the coin flipped through the air faster and fell into Farrin's palm all the sooner as it was thrust along by the threads of time. The field dissipated, and then Farrin flipped it again. A similar field enwrapped the coin, but this time, it slowed to a snail's pace.
While it flipped, he spoke, "so, back home der' was this hero who could drain the momentum from people n' things 'round her ta' increase her speed er' that o' others," though only a handful among his peers, none present, might be aware, he was describing his mother, "her big ultimate attack was known as The Queen's Decree: Crimson Smash." She used it against Balor at the end. He survived but was left weak enough that other heroes could apprehend the bastard.
"She focused dis' quirk on a target while launchin' herself at top speed. The combination o' incredible speed n' the momentum drain would create a tearin' effect, then she'd lob herself inta 'em wit' a devastatingly powerful jab. I'm tryin' somethin similar, pushin' me two field types together ta' create a distortion that can overcome any defense. I've been practin' it fer' quite a while now, but been strugglin' ta' sync me' fields up properly."
Blade of the King: Emerald Smash. Yeah, he had the name picked out waaay ahead of time, but execution proved nigh impossible. Morgana the Crimson Light, his mother, was among those preeminent heroes truly gifted in combining her quirk and her martial prowess. Farrin could throw a jab with the best of them, but forcing those fields together felt like driving a nail into his skull. The two effects didn't want to cooperate. The best he managed so far was placing them beside one another on a singular target, but the effect wasn't quite as explosive as what he required. Hopefully, he could find some insight here.

He was at home when letting loose with his quirk. Unshackled by the world's slow-mo Joe pace and beaming full speed ahead. He marched to the beat of his drum, and he was drumming like Tom Grosset.
Farrin's feet were a blur of movement. The bike was hardly any more perceptible as he blew past another five contestants. Only three rode ahead of him now. One thumbed the switch on his bike, and oil spewed out from behind. A deceleration field ensnared the oil and bought Farrin the second he needed to weave around it, then ahead of the biker.
A quick glance was shot behind and above to Josie. While hers wasn't the fastest bike, the fact that she could avoid the obstacles and combat, however indirect, on the track meant she could keep ahead of most of the competition. Perfect. She deserved to be rewarded for the risk taken in these challenges with a quirk that still needed some work as far as he knew.
Then, he fixed his sights ahead—two more competitors. Farrin thumbed the switch on the other handle. Time to see what gizmo number two had in store. Two balloons swole just behind his bike, released from a slot just above those exhaust pipes. And now he was slowing down.
"Oh no feckin' way this is happenin," Farrin shouted.
He leaned up, then kicked his right leg back hard, popping the balloon. The bike began to swerve, speedup but out of control. He couldn't lose out now. Not when he was so close to overtaking the others. Another kick, this one to the balloon on the left, popping that one as well.
It would have been a useful tool for last-second maneuvering to avoid danger, but otherwise, it was the ship's anchor. Farrin didn't do anchors. He was speed, entirely speed. He kicked up the acceleration field further, as fast as he could, then blasted forward.
Second place now. First place was a speedster, too. His legs pedaled with superhuman muscles that saw him outpace the rest. But no musculature could outrun the march of time. Farrin leaned ahead, narrowed his profile, minimized wind resistance, and flew like a bullet along the track. Dust and echoes were all left in his wake. Farrin beamed beyond the frontrunner, then blasted across the finish line. The gap between him and second place wasn't massive, but a win was a win.

Whether the rumors of the Yokai were true or not, the woods hadn't found much fun in playing with the time-turner. A few unkind taunts, a couple of reminders, and a swelling sense of anxiety were enough this night. The screaming stopped, and his father's armored visage was gone.
"Hmm, all right then, keep yer' secrets," he mused.
Farrin made one more loop through the deep woods, trailed a short stream, and then beamed around a boulder back in Josie's direction. When he eventually found her sitting on the ground, he shrugged in defeat. "Somethin' goin' on out 'ere, but I can't really say what. Not a soul in sight, foxy or human," he offered. "I'm guessin' yuh' haven't seen anythin' from not down there?"
It was more rhetorical than not. If Josie found anything, she would have said so already, right? She definitely wouldn't be sitting around like that. Maybe the fun little game of hide and seek wasn't up her alley. Well, lucky for her, Farrin was just about done here.
"We could keep lookin 'round, but wit' nothin ta' go on, I can't help but feel like this is jus' someone's quirk at play. No real signs though, so how 'bout we jus' go n' grab somethin ta' eat then head back ta' campus?"

Life was precious, but the fact that the same exact sound had resonated from several directions just yelled supernatural trickery. Someone wanted them to stay. Maybe just wasting their time? Or, heck, the fox was toying with them. Either way, there didn't seem to be much to gain by staying.
