If this thing, this Alter's, go-to strategy was violence, its goals were a moot point. It was a villain, the enemy, and Farrin had to defeat it. Farrin caught the Alter in the jaw with one blow, then the Alter returned with a knee to Farrin's gut in kind.
The two Farrins danced perfectly to Melodist's melody, and it appeared the Rogue would be eliminated from this game rather early. If all went according to the Alpha's plan, they'd never repeat this whole messy process ever again. A point he needed the Mentat to know before their end.
"Oh, but how could you understand, rogue? This shall be your true death. Oblivion that transcends all others. The void. This is the eventuality. The last of the uncharted waters between us and the paradise beyond the End Time's reach."
Farrin's fist journeyed across the distance and hammered the Alter's jaw again. The time-turner would see the damn thing unhinged and shattered. He lacked the Alter's skill, but this Farrin grew up scrappier than most. It was working to his advantage, or at least leveling the field a bit.
Gunfire stole his attention from the fight at hand though, and drew it toward Thea. She was hurt. In so many times, across so many realities, she was hurt. Sifting. Splits in the seams of time, that only Farrin saw. She wasn't one person, but three, five, twelve. The speed required to match the Alter had come for its due.
"Thea," he muttered, stumbling back from the brawl.
The Alter lunged. "There will be no do-overs this time. It all comes down to this," he shouted, bringing the hammer down on Farrin. But Farrin was free from the Alter's onslaught. The melody had ended, and the Alter was gone.
"Do you understand what you have done?" Corvidae threatened the music maker some few miles away. "You were supposed to observe and only observe."
"Correct me if I'm wrong, doctor, but did you not exceed the parameters of your own mandate?"
"I wasn't seen by the child. And the rogue! Your interference brought the damn rogue into play far before we intended. Had you followed the Alpha's orders, he would have appeared where and when we wanted him to, ripe for the taking. Now, he's out there!"
"Did you see his condition? The Mentat has been taken off the board."
Farrin stumbled down the alley at a time-turned pace. His head waved from side to side with the wind, but Thea was in sight, so close now. Farrin fell to a knee just ahead of her. The blades in her back may have been the only thing keeping her from bleeding out. Whoever fired the guns was gone, but their knives and the bullet casings remained. He didn't have time to sort through it though. Thea was hurt.
"Thea! Thea! Lass, wake the hell up," he said with a few shakes. "Shite, shite, shite. Okay."
With a turn of the wrist, Farrin encased her in a field of translucent emerald, slowing the bleeding further. His arms moved to lift her but slipped under only the image of another Thea, of another time. He moved again, and again. On the fourth try his arms actually slipped under her unconscious form, and lifted the girl up... only for him to fall back down. The realities in his eyes grew by the dozens. Vertigo washed over him dragging him this way and that. Instead, Farrin dug into his pocket for his phone and thumbed emergency services. Temporal deceleration would have to do until proper medical attention arrived. Farrin set his hands on bullet wounds and kept the pressure on, but even unconscious, being in contact with her seemed to agitate his sifting. The dozens of realities multiplied by the hundreds, and Farrin too passed out. When the two awoke, it would be in a nearby hospital. The two would live, but something out there had its sights set on them. Twice now Freja had mentioned that Japan wasn't her home country. She referred to her past with "back home" attached though it was only now that he knew "home" was in Denmark. He could chop it up to the lack of sleep, but honestly, he should have asked her to elaborate sooner.
"Yer secret's safe wit' me," he said with the upward crook of a smirk, "Honestly before I came ta' Japan I ran wit' a few rough crowds from time ta' time. Never any one group fer' long, but sometimes we just play wit' the hand we're dealt."
Farrin was mum on the details, the homelessness, and how it led him to run with said crowds that used him for his quirk - and how he stole from those crowds once he found out where they hoarded their goods. For seven years, his life was entirely focused on tomorrow. Not the day after. Not a month or year later. Just tomorrow and how he was going to make it until then. He didn't hurt people, not badly at least, but small-time thievery was pretty easy when you ran faster than most automobiles.
"That explains it," he mused, recalling her work with her BBB against that knife-wielding plague mask guy.
A little time turning to even the quirked-up playing field, and she snuffed the dude out in some two or three blows. A few more tools in her arsenal and some stronger fundamentals and she wouldn't need his power next time. Though, hopefully, there wouldn't be a next time - at least not until after graduation.
Speak of the devil and red fecker would march right in. Farrin eyed the grassy expanse. No fissures. No tears that would suggest an earthquake. What in the bloody hell was going on?
His answer arrived with ol' gator-face rose from the ground. Not dig, but legitimately rose up through the earth. Intangibility of some form or was he shifting the earthly matter below? Obviously an alligator quirk of some kind. Did that account for his size or was there gigantification of some form in the mix as well?
"Whoa there, bud. Let's no' get all handsy!" Farrin shouted, firing up Chronokinesis and all its energetic bells and whistles, then leaping back out of the gator's reach. Freja had been lobbed across the field. That was problematic. "Yuh' okay over there, lass?" He called out. If she was conscious, it would be worth it to throw an acceleration field over her. If not, he'd have to recover her before any other potential parties could. Why couldn't he have one normal day away from campus?

That point had been scientifically proven. Quirks were like muscles. They could be trained and strengthened with use, no matter what form they took. The more you used your quirk, the stronger it became. A few flabby hairs today could become tungsten-strong tomorrow - figuratively.
"When I first started usin' me quirk, I barely accelerated me pace at all. Now, I can outrun most sports cars. Maybe all o' 'em. Granted, I've been trainin it up fer years now."
The din of battle died down as the two entered one of the training facilities. A pass through one hall, and down another, and they would press through a pair of double doors and into a large room with several stone spires at its center and deactivated villain bots lining its sides. It was in a facility just like this that Farrin had been training his ultimate move. Well, what would one day become his ultimate move when he perfected the technique.
"This is where some o' the professors take us fer more bombastic trainin. The stony terrain makes fer a decent punchin bag when yer tryin out stronger techniques n' applications o' yer quirk. N' the villain bots on the side can be activated ta' give yuh some targets that fight back. Yuh'll find plenty o' facilities like this throughout the campus."

What was slowing the duo's progress down was finding the right lane for Farrin's throws. All the debris from previous explosions and the general setup of ground beta for the exercise played obstacle to his little strategy. He couldn't go wandering too far for other munitions without risk of setting off an unseen or otherwise unaccounted-for explosive, so it was safest to pick up what he could use along the way or stick with those first few rocks he picked up.
They were closing the distance, but the stones weren't even making it as far with Lone Wolf's defenses growing more dense. more explosives blowing his collection of rocks into pebbles. They were going to have to speed this up somehow. He had just the idea.
"Alright," he said under breath.
Farrin threw the remainder of his stockpile ahead. Worst case scenario, he could take the risk of collecting more. Instead, he was going to switch to some munitions with more penetration power.
A cluster of mines detonated around them, whipping up a light smokescreen. The building they were aiming for was dead ahead, and it was easy enough still to see a few feet forward, but maybe that would throw their attacker's aim off if he was looking their way. Then, the time-turner leaned lower to the ground and aimed his wrists parallel to the street. With a twitch of his thumb, the fired up the linear cannons Kei had integrated into his suit and fired. A streak of explosions burned alive between the student duo's position and the building. With the extra firepower, obstacles were less of an issue, and rather than stand around and line up each throw, a few shots from the cannons wiped a sizable lane clear of explosives. If there were other traps, well, they would soon find out, but at least he was cutting away swaths of the mine bombs now.

Farrin awoke with heavy breath, his chest rising and falling, beads of sweat racing down his neck. It was happening again, only worse this time. Whether it was Sifting or something else entirely, his mind was faltering, collapsing in on itself, unable to contain the damage time had done. For four years she had been healing the damage done to his mind by chronokinesis with her presence alone, but he was lost to it again. Alone.
When he turned over in his bed, it was only to the memory of his Sada. She was gone. Off on her mission to heal those around the world. His love for her flowed infinitely, and he knew it was returned in kind. He felt it in those moments they continued to share, but such moments were few and far between. While she was healing those in need with Foundation, providing relief and care to those in disaster zones around the world, and discovering herself along the way, Farrin was made to promise he would continue his journey as well. An annual festival Farrin had heard of but never really attended before. Though he has lived in the country for four years now, most of that time was spent training at either Hero Prep, or with the Heroes of Above & Beyond. This year, however, he and Sada had decided to make a little day date out of the festival. To that end, Farrin decided first to scout out some of the areas used for the celebration. And, with Natsumi being connected to a political family, it seemed like the right move to ask her along to maybe point out anything of note that he might not understand. Cultural barriers and all that. So, the plan was simple. Morning hours spent exploring it all with Natsumi. Afternoon date with Sada. Then Murdah Ball with the newly dubbed "Abes" at night.
"So, I'm guessin' yuh've attended this thing before, no?" He asked Natsumi as they wandered into Shibuya.
A million food options from the infinite food vendors dotting the city barrages his senses. So much, so fast. He wanted to eat everything in sight! Chronokinesis and constant training worked up quite the appetite. The only thing off-putting about the little excursion was, of course, the thousands of people. The city was already one of the largest and most densely populated in the world. Shibuya was part of the metropolis's beating heart, packed even further. Toss a festival in and the number of bodies basically formed an ocean.

Farrin spent nearly his entire life sleep deprived. As powerful as chronokinesis was, it did not make for the best bedfellow. Sifting into other times and places, usually for the worse, had a way of haunting the mind. He saw alternate versions of himself that were as bad as they came, killing and maiming for the joy of it. Other times he saw his friends and family die most gruesome deaths. Occasionally, there was something good mixed in there, but more often than not he saw the worse of what life had to offer him in most times. Sada's presence was a healing salve to his mind, even in his sleep, but they weren't together every night, and sometimes sifting took him still. Recently, knowing what was soon to come, it was getting worse.
"It's nice. Quiet. Far from all the noise n' distractions," he said, rubbing at the dark circles growing under his eyes.
Farrin wasn't one to take time away from his training regimen, but if Freja hadn't ranked as a friend before that last brawl with those crow feckers, she certainly did now. That, and maybe a little time away from his usual routine would do him some good. Anything was worth trying. He was in no hurry to return to the days of old, where he went three or more days without sleep each week, sometimes the full week straight. It was exhausting, and would only serve to slow him down. This was only a leisurely stroll, there was a practical purpose to it. At least, that's how he justified it.
"Is this what yuh' would do before yer UA days? Come n' train 'ere?" He asked, eyes grazing over the grassy expanse.
A few chirps and cheers from the local wildlife, and a breeze to boot. He was a city boy himself, but his inner Irish was one with nature. He soaked it right up. Shut his eyes for a moment, taking a long breath in, then exhaling.
"Yuh' had ta' get inta' trouble o' one sort or another ta' develop the skills needed ta' make it past the entrance exam. I can certainly see yuh' whirlin that bat n' similar things around 'ere."

How to apprehend some potentially powerful crooks that were quite likely ready and willing to kill whoever they needed to without killing or maiming them in turn. Usually. Sometimes there was simply no other option but to break or otherwise kill them. It was a line Farrin would endeavor never to cross. All life was precious. From one life a dozen more might spring in the temporal equation. Some bad for sure, but others good.
When Josephine came to a stop, so did he to watch as she demonstrated her gift. Rather underwhelming, but there had to be more to it, right? You didn't get into UAU without displaying some rather large potential. Then again, if Freja, who hadn't possessed a quirk, managed to impress her exam proctors, it was entirely possible others had done so without much use of their quirks.
"Is it particularly strong or somethin?" He would ask, looking at the minuscule hairs growing from her hand.
If the hairs were strong enough, and if she could learn to extend them to certain ranges, maybe they could be used like living capture tape. Or even as a shield if the hairs taking damage didn't cause her pain! "I imagine once yuh' get a hold over somethin like that, that there'd be plenty o' utility to it."
With that, he would lead them to the closest training facility. He had no intention of sparring with someone so new, but maybe she'd take interest in the tools at their disposal that weren't present outside like the villain bots he had mentioned earlier.

Though the Alter was the stronger of the two, Farrin's hands danced across unseen threads and tapped into unimaginable powers. A twist of the faucet and the sleuth unleashed its reserves, time itself flooded his veins. They were little more than flickering light, tearing the mouth of the alley apart. And when the blurs broke and the figures stilled, Farrin stood over the fallen Alter.
"What is it yuh fear so much that yer willin' to lose all that we are?" He cursed the fallen foe.
This was his first encounter with the madness that he became in other times, yet he was well-versed in the language of this enemy. He had seen it before, his other self, Oberon, fighting against these demons that wore his face. His fight, our fight, but elsewhere. Now, it had reached this time's shores. Whatever its answer, it wouldn't sate this time-turner, but he knew his Sada was at risk and he find out why.
"It isn't fear that grips us, but death, and with every moment that passes by its grip grows stronger. Soon enough, it shall strangle not only us but everyone - everywhere, through all the vast infinities. Only the Alpha can change that now, which is why - things - have changed," the Alter replied, standing his height. "It is counting on your resistance."
"We're always the villain - until we're not" was starting to make a little more sense, but where one question was nearly answered, a dozen more took its place. What was this "it" and if he was so weak in the grand scheme of convergence, why was it relying on him? What were the goals of these warring factions? And why was it left to him, the "inferior product" to figure it all out?
"Hard ta' think you the goods guys when yer' attackin me n' mine e'erywhere we go," Farrin spat back, "if hurtin others is yer plan A, then yer just as fecked as yer this thing yer so afraid of." Farrin brought his fists to bear.
"You must be willing to spill a droplet to save the sea."
And so the temporal dance continued. Two blurs of movement crashed into one another, emerald sparks blasting between buildings and up the alleyway.
Melodist, continued to play, watching the two battles unfold. To tear this Farrin's root from the earth and plant him in their forest so soon would please the Alpha, but his interference might have backfired. That would be problematic. Meanwhile, the rogue temporal rogue was meddling in their affairs once again. Their own agenda stifling the only real solution to the Alpha's, the entire world's, true enemy. Smart as they were, perhaps they didn't fully grasp the powers at play. Best to remove them now.
"Then I shall prescribe regicide if only to cure you of your madness!" Melodist called, "finish him!"
A third and final scale leaped over the edge of the building, landing at Mateo's back.
"How many times have you felt it through your lives, rogue? Fear's many little deaths? Don't you tire of this game? Come now, accept the oblivion that awaits you!"

At least, none were mentioned in the briefing and there hadn't been any in the streets. It wouldn't make sense for the only populated zone to be the building Lone Wold was in, which didn't really simulate any sort of realistic scenario, but this was one case where Jun's tenure had to count. She had experience with the guy, Farrin didn't.
"Eh, sure, but the plan I had ta' clear a path is gonna be pretty loud," he said, picking one of the stones cupped in his left arm up and throwing it into the air before catching it. "Luckily, e'ery mine that goes off is gonna blow more rubble up n' about. I'll use that wit' me quirk ta' create as direct a path ta' the buildin' as possible. If things get desperate, I can speed us up, but no tellin' how many explosives are out there we'd have ta' cross."
He turned, looking back out of the alleyway. Assuming she hadn't anything to say, he would speak up himself. "Alright, let's get this over wit'." And with that, Farrin would turn the corner, envelop the first piece of rubble in a temporal acceleration field, and lobbed it into a roll across the ground. Two mines detonated, and so Farrin followed the path of stone. He could only hope Jun was following to hold up her end of the strategy. When he approached the end of the first stone's roll, he pulled out another one and repeated the process. More mines went off, but at least neither of the students were close. This wasn't the fastest approach, but if Jun could keep her defenses up, it was the surest.

Again, he felt guilty dragging a librarian into his battle brain, but that was ultimately what he was here to learn, how to best apprehend villains and protect people. It was easy to write off simple training in the fields as enough, but the battle was won as much in the mind as it was in the body, especially in the age of quirks. Not every enemy would go down with a single punch. And who knew the types of quirks he would encounter outside of UAU's walls? He had to prepare for anything and everything.
"Yeah, I can see. Definitely a lot goin' on in 'ere," he remarked, eyeing the spiring bookshelves that ran up and down each aisle.
Normally, Farrin read right off his smartphone, but he wasn't exactly sure what he was looking for this time around. Fortunately, he knew the university had to have some books pertinent to the subjects he was interested in today. The school was known for making world-class heroes, which meant a lot of work went into combat and quirks, which is precisely what he needed to study right now.
"Ah, so I'm guessin' the students 'ere aren't quite like those yuh' went ta' school wit' yerself? Must make fer quite the change."
He didn't know what to say in regard to the rest of UAU's staff. It made sense that their focus was on more practical skills and developments, but that didn't mean it was right to simply ignore someone - if he was reading into her comment correctly. Then again, he could say all that much about them without sounding rude.

The only exception was the dark violet bands of capture tape around his arms he could use in lieu of handcuffs to apprehend criminals - or student opposition during hero exercises as of current. There was little one could do to properly camouflage themselves during daylight hours, but a black outfit would certainly be of benefit while patrolling at night. The white wisps that accompanied the entrance of his temporal state would be problematic, but from far away nobody would notice.
"Yeah, I try ta' keep it simple. The student I mentioned from support built me some ranged weaponry integrated inta' me' hero outfit, but they function like low-level air guns, wit' me usin' me' quirk ta' speed up the munitions. This way, they dun' require any advanced mechanisms, gunpowder, or anythin' else that might be turned against me so easily, n' I can modulate how fast the rounds fire so I can incapacitate pretty easily, rather than worry about killin."
The sounds of sparring matches and other quirks in action grew as the duo crossed into the training field proper. They walked beside the bleachers that overlooked the tracks, and just past that were the sparring circles that other students trained in. "So, if yuh' no mind me askin, what's yer quirk?" Farrin would ask as they passed the track and started moving toward the indoor training facilities.
