Enemies basically came with the whole hero territory, he just had expected it to happen so soon. He was a student still and had only really picked a few thugs off the street so far. What could he have done to piss off these deadlier individuals? "The snake people," he thought of them so far, on account of that snake symbol he saw the first time.
"Yuv a few knives stickin outta yuh, lass. How 'bout yuh just let me handle it. I'd pull 'em out but they may be holdin back excessive bleedin," he started, "n' Sada me' girlfriend. Also attends UAU. We went ta' hero prep together. I'm just kiddin' though, I dun think she'd care given the circumstances."
With that, they were off. Yeah, a cab might have been nice but then they would probably have to explain the multitude of bruises, bumps, and whole-arse knives in Freja's case, that they had suffered. Even fatigued, he would blitz any car through the city. Maybe on the open road, he would fall short in his current condition, but Tokyo was massive. As long as he didn't take a tumble, this was the better option.
It wouldn't be long before the wooded expanse that cut UAU off from the rest of the city came into view. The university was built along the city's edge, as far from the hustle and bustle as possible, and with good reason. In Farrin's eyes, it was an oasis in the desert. The healers there were as good as any hospital. Heck, he could actually have Sada take care of them if need be.
"Yuh did good, lass. Dun worry, we're almost home."

Between temporal sifting in his sleep, which was even worse when he was apart from Sada, and his general aversion to wasting time, Farrin slept enough to get some gas in the tank and then got right back to his training regimen each day. He hadn't skipped a beat between graduating Hero Prep and getting into UAU. He even tossed some bullies around after orientation. It hadn't taken him long to start developing a bit of a reputation again.
"Eh, well, I've a sparring session scheduled wit' one o' the professors, Leonid, before the end o' the week so... can't say restin' up much is on the agenda."
That was another item on the list. He was the only student, at least that he knew of so far, that had requested a one-on-one bout with one of the former pro-hero professors on their first week. Who better to throw himself at than a former pro? If he could hold his own against a real hero right off the bat, then by the time he was done here he would certainly walk out from these walls one day as one of the very best heroes.
"Anyway, yeah, I figure we drop yer stuff off, I show yuh' the dorm, n' then we can check out all the rest."
Surely there was some way to turn down the villain bot's difficulty? But Farrin had no intention of doing so. If anything, he wanted the murder machines turned up to eleven. No sense in taking it easy on himself. He had to earn the name Oberon.
"We sure did, bud," Farrin responded to Kenta's excitement.
They were coming up on Heights Alliance, the student dorms, fast. This was where the next step of their journey began. Hero Prep was behind them, true heroism - ahead.

His (somewhat) newly made family aside, heroics was his life. When he was a wee lad, he wanted to be just like his parents. Now, he was out to make his mother proud. She was gone, but her values, her aspirations, her dreams - they lived on through him.
"Only one that might be close is Apogee," he started, unamused by their guests, "but we're just outside his route. Dun know if he'll hear their wailin."
Farrin didn't believe in heroic brutality and the like, but these guys didn't know that. Maybe they would back off?
"What did you say?" The lead spat, his eyes locked onto Farrin, before falling to the time-turner's pocket.
He snatched at a silver chain that hung out of the pocket and pulled out the family heirloom. A golden pocket watch with an emerald encrusted on the outer casing. One of the other thugs began to pat Kei down. Their proximity to Kei was the only thing keeping Farrin from smashing the lead thug's face in immediately.
"Give that back," he warned.
"Oh? Nothing valuable? Get them out of sight!" The thug ordered his posse. The entirety of the group shuffled, pushing and shoving Farrin and Kei into the closest alley. "You see, we don't appreciate liars," he continued as the collective group shuffled into the alleyway, "and I certainly don't appreciate being given orders from kids so-"
"Shut yer feckin' gob n' give me me' watch," Farrin cut him off as he recovered.
No weapons brought to bear yet. No swings were taken. Technically, he wasn't supposed to act yet, not until it was unequivocally self-defense, but they had just taken the pocket watch his mother had given him, and if he let the thugs act first, it might start with Kei. The lad was smart, but Farrin wasn't sure if support department students received even basic combat training.
"Now listen here, punk," the thug said, pulling out a knife, and pointing it toward Farrin's neck, "I said I don't like little shits like you giving me orders. Do you understand? I call the shots here! Your lives are in my hands!" The knife touched Farrin's throat.
"Now yuh fecked up."
Time slowed to a crawl in Farrin's eyes. White motes of flame burned in and out around him, joined shortly by emerald sparks, and his eyes took on their clock-dial appearance. Yeah, maybe these guys would want Apogee around. He was about to beat their faces in.
Farrin grabbed the man's arm and twisted it, then kicked him hard in the shin. Before grabbing his watch, he lifted the same leg he'd used to attack the lead thug and thrust it sideways into the thug that held Kei, launching the fecker into the alley wall. Then, he snatched the watch out of the lead's hands and pulled it free.
"Kei, get yer back ta' a wall n' stay behind me if yuh' can!" Farrin called, thrusting his balled-up fist into the next closest thug's face.
Whether Kei listened or not, Farrin would position himself between the support student and the bulk of the thugs. One goon's arm became something of a cannon. Another pulled a handgun out. A third summoned a chain out of the air. So, it was a mix of quirked and quirkless. That didn't change anything. He could take them. He had to.

He was without a doubt a student and a student only. The Preliminary License Exams were still quite a ways off so, technically, he wasn't supposed to partake in any heroic actions outside of campus unless he was in danger. And, well, he had been in danger those times he chose to act. The problem was, he was in danger pretty often. Once with Zenkai, once with Freja, another time with Kei, and twice now with Thea he had been attacked. Not a full month in and he had found all sorts of criminal trouble.
"Student. Preliminary exams haven't been held yet. I have patrolled a few times wit' a local agency that sort o' been watchin out fer me while I'm in Japan. Also ran inta' trouble a time or two while headin inta' the city. Shinjuku, in the heart o' the city, can be pretty dicey. It's where some o' the most people gather, but also has the highest criminal activity level in Tokyo."
Turning back to the support labs, Farrin considered who his "guy in the chair' really was. The closest approximation would have to be Kei. He didn't really supply intel during the hero simulations... or when Farrin was actually out there dealing with criminals, but he was a good fella and created most of Farrin's gear. That was close enough to the "guy in the chair," right?
"Well, there is one student that's been helpin me build some kit fer me hero outfit n' such. Originally, I wasn't thinkin' I'd use all that much gear, but me' time here quickly taught me that we need ta' have as many tools in the arsenal as possible. I do suggest yuh' stop on over there if yuh' need somethin' built."

Did yuh' hear me when I explained me' path back down the stairwell was clear of explosives?" The mines in the street nearly scored some damage, but that didn't discredit his initial route. He was safe until he reached the first alley and was forced to double back to the second.
Farrin followed the second-year student to the mouth of the alleyway. Lone Wolf was dug in deep, but they had to do something. The two students could play it slow and safe, navigate around the myriad mine bombs dotting the streets and alleyways, or they could act. Every grain of sand that drained from the hourglass lowered their odds as more and more of their fellow students were eliminated. And, well, Farrin was never one for waiting.
"Yuh said yuh could knock down that stone pillar easily wit' yer quirk right? I think it time we play some offense," Farrin said, snatching up a few loose stones from the rubble and detritus left behind by the mines they detonated. "I can probably grab his attention meself. I'm fast n' have a fair chance at outmaneuverin' even a fair number o' his little party tricks. While he tries ta' line up a shot on me, you bombard the buildin'. No hostages involved in this exercise, n' our only goal is ta' apprehend him. Even if yuh dun' know what floor he's on, his aim should be thrown off at the least. If he relocates, we're buyin' e'eryone some time ta' close the distance. Lettin' 'em all know what buildin' he's in too."
Farrin stood among the fastest of his peers. Faster than most of the university's professors too. Maybe all of them. What's more, he could summon several temporal deceleration fields like umbrellas that would slow Lone Wolf's rounds as they passed through each field. While Lone Wolf was focused on him, Jun could simultaneously shake things up for the professor and signal his position to their peers. Worst-case scenario, only either Farrin or Jun were removed from play. As far as he was concerned, it was their best option. Even if it cost each of them some stamina and didn't see the sniper caught, they could still rest up before approaching again, and at least the others would know where to go.

Toxin's gas didn't appear to be truly poisonous. Farrin wasn't feeling any long-term effects, it just threw off during the actual fight. Effective, but not lethal by itself. Freja's enemy, however, had done a number on her. Farrin hadn't caught the guy's quirk in action, but his propensity for knives was clear.
Farrin pressed off the now-empty street, and stood his height, jogging over toward Freja the moment he knew he could. The snake symbol from that night with Zen flashed in his mind. Nearly every instance of his leaving campus had seen Farrin caught in a scrap, with unusually capable opposition too. Freja was right, more than she knew.
"No enemies I could name, but yuh' might be onta' somethin," he said as he closed in on her. "I'll bring it up wit' Above n Beyond, that agency that's been watchin' out fer me out here. Fer' now, I'm gonna pick yuh' up n' run yuh' back ta campus. I'm all good. That gas was just playin hell on me throat n' lungs, but I dun' think it was actual poison. Also, dun' say a thing ta' Sada 'bout this."
That last part was a joke - mostly. It wasn't as if Freja and Sada met, as far as Farrin knew, but Sada wouldn't appreciate him running other women around. Freja was a friend, though. A real friend, actually. But nobody could replace his Sada.
Assuming Freja was okay with him doing so, Farrin would lift the girl up, and throw a temporal field around them. It wouldn't pack the speedy punch his previous fields had. He was still a little disoriented and quite fatigued, but it would get them back to campus faster than any emergency vehicle.
"Hand on," he'd warn, then blast off toward campus. Yeah, Freja was definitely right, and his temporal senses agreed. These attacks weren't random. Someone was after him.

Yeah, he had gone through quite a few bots at this point. More combat than rescue, but he wouldn't have it any other way. Saving people was a hero's goal. Farrin was just best at doing so by means of eliminating threats.
"Honestly, I lost count. There was an ambush waitin' in the lobby. Fought a bunch o' the smaller villain types n' some o' the big nasties too. Anyway, I've three hostages waitin' in the stairwell, keepin' two flight below-"
Before Farrin could finish, two final Victory bots rounded the far corners of the room. Honestly, they hardly fit, but they were fast and could hit hard. Anything in their way was torn to shreds. In the past, Farrin had such machines apart with relative ease, but he had taken some damage on his way up from the building's lower levels.
"C'mon, seems we're no' dun' just yet," he started, then ran toward the bot to the left.
Farrin leaped up into the air and thrust his limp arm out toward the machine's head. It swung one of its massive arms up to intercept him but only tore at his waist cape. The limp arm lobbed around the "neck" of the machine and redirected Farrin's movement. He clung to the robot, then stood, his boots against its back, and started hammering on its head with his right hand.
A dent was quick to form, then a tear, revealing more circuitry, just as he had done in the lobby. The bot wasn't quick to break though. It grabbed Farrin's shoulder with its other hand and yanked the time-turner back. He pried himself forward, his fingers just inches away from the robot's wiring. A battle between man and metal, but he threw a deceleration field around the bot's arm, slowing the rate at which it pulled. He pushed himself forward and grabbed at the wiring, tearing the circuitry out - "killing" the machine.
Farrin was dropped but immediately sprang back up. One arm remained limp. His shoulder had bruised, but if Natsumi was in trouble with the other Victory bot, he was ready to step in. That went double for temporal resonance. Flow was easy enough to hand wave. He could speed things up and slow them down. Most didn't think too much about it afterward. Miroru had seen him in action during their exams, and had become one of the regulars he saw around campus now. Still, only Sada, Kenta, and Thea were privy to resonance - so far.
Time had whittled away at his some of his barriers around the light-bender (among other things), though. She was his most consistent sparring partner and, as of today, helped him practice new techniques without any of the sass he experienced with a few others. They worked fairly well together too, again, considering the entrance exam.
"Eh, yeah, somethin' like that," he admitted while stretching out before his final flight test of the day. "So, sometimes I get a flash at the back o' me head that's like a danger sense. That's the most common thing while I'm up n' about. But, I can also sorta dive deeper. Remember how I said manipulatin' time is like navigatin' rapids? Well, if I really focus, or push meself too hard, or sometimes in me' sleep, it's like I dive inta' an ocean - but this ocean is made entirely o' threads that stretch fer infinity n' each thread is like an entirely different time. It's far more difficult ta' control that the fields, but sometimes I'll hear whispers or see things about meself or others literally from across time, like things that bleed through somehow."
Very few had earned the temporal explanation. Miroru was the only one that fast-tracked the topic without any heavy influence of time. He felt familiar with her, but not to the extent of Sada or some of the others. She didn't seem the bad sort though. An honest hero in the making. Someone he could work with even beyond UAU's walls.
"It's no' the easiest thing ta' convey, water n' threads are the best way I can put it. Me' quirk doctors said it's probably me' mind's best interpretation, n' it's somethin' most people can wrap their heads around, but it's vast."
With the explanation finished, he readied for his run.

He just needed to find brilliant thinkers. Those that strayed from the norm in regards to battle strategy. Even if quirks weren't around back then, there had to be overlap. Concepts that were applicable even to this day.
"They dun' need ta' be from Japan, or any particular era really. I'm jus' lookin fer those whichever warriors or cultures thought most outside the box. The most unorthodox tacticians n' such. I may be a first year, but I came from a Hero Prep school, so I have a strong foundation in terms o' strategy n' general heroic thinkin, at least fer a student, so I'm lookin now fer those that were outside the 'norm.' Innovators in the art o' war."
Farrin wasn't looking to start any wars, clearly, but combat strategies from the most malicious of minds could be adapted by the forces of good. And, even if the librarian wasn't exactly familiar with hero course classes and such, she had to have some basic understanding of what was being taught at UAU. He wasn't trying to come across as some overconfident ogre, but someone meticulous in the study of his craft.
"N', I see. Well, I'd appreciate yuh' showin me ta' whatever materials we do have. I - eh - have no' been havin the easiest time lookin' around meself. N' if yuh' dun mind requestin' Reichenbach's work fer me, I'd appreciate that as well. I need as much material as I can get me' hands on."
Had she simply given him the directions, Farrin wasn't an idiot, he probably could find the relevant books and materials, but this would be faster. Whether she was a full-fledged librarian or an assistant, he couldn't tell due to her age, she would undoubtedly be more familiar with the content of the library and navigating it all.

He was confident in his speed and sheer fighting prowess. There hadn't been an opponent yet, at least among the students, that had been able to outrun or outfight Farrin. Springs was the only perhaps on Farrin's level in those regards, at least that he knew of. But, in terms of strength, there were a few that outperformed him still.
"Can't say how high the weights go. I dun' consider meself a noodle by any means, but I've no' come close ta' whatever the heaviest weights here are. I can definitely outrun those fellas," he nodded toward the same speedsters Josephine had commented on, "speed is kinda me' thing, but in terms o' raw strength, I'm definitely not among those that can handle the school's heaviest weights at the moment."
Nothing wrong with a little honesty.
"N' no' quite," he nearly chuckled, "no frats 'ere I'm aware of. Those are just the name o' the fake cities we use as 'em trainin' grounds, ta' simulate what it's like doin' hero work most often."
Farrin continued further down the path through the training fields. More and more students came into view. Everyone training their quirks and physical prowess. Farrin could see the grassy hill he typically trained atop on the farthest side of the field. It was an isolated spot he had come to make his own. Instead of heading that way though, he led them closer to the buildings between the main lecture hall and the other training facilities.
"Over there," he pointed to a few isolated buildings, "is the library n' the support labs. The support department students there are nothin' short o' geniuses, n' cook up all sorts o' tools n' tech fer us ta' use."

The odds of two bomb threats being exactly the same were slim to nil, but there were some crossover strategies that remained applicable. There were no civilian actors or bots in play as far as he knew, which meant they could afford a little collateral damage. Too much would be risking a lower grade, but it would be worth it to arm Emilia up with a way to signal him.
"So, I use me' quirk via these nearly translucent, emerald fields. If I find the bomb n' its guards first, I'll summon one big enough ta' see up in the air n' keep it there fer a few minutes. Keep an eye on the sky. You, on the other hand, should probably tear up some o' the pipes or somethin' similar, n' throw it as high as possible, just not directly up if yer' physically near the bomb. It'll cause some damage, but even if I somehow dun' see it from wherever I am, odds are I'll hear it."
Normally, most heroes had communicators with which they could be put into contact with one another, their agencies, or the Hero Association. Considering the students lacked such devices for the simulation, they had to come up with something. Maybe it wasn't the most subtle method of communication, but it would get the job done. Probably.
With their thirty seconds up, the bell rang.
"This is gonna feel weird. Try ta' think slow. Yuh'll understand in a moment."
With that, Farrin immediately threw a field over each of them. While he had long grown accustomed to temporal acceleration, to Emilia it would feel something like an adrenaline shot, an electrical charge that slowed the world around her down.
"Let's head as close ta' the center as we can, then split up!" He started once it was clear she was okay.
Farrin would lead the way, darting further, deeper into the warehouse district and pipe works. Eventually, when they made enough progress, he would veer left. "You take the right, the field won't last too much longer as we move further apart, so be careful!"

The sound of an explosion signaled that the upperclassmen had gone her own way. He had already confirmed the stairwell and lower floors of this particular building had been clear of mines, plus there was less risk of exposure if they simply kept low and went inside. Skidding to a stop though, he was met with his own surprise.
The mine leaped up from the ground, moving in slow motion in Farrin's eyes. The mine by itself hardly posed a threat. It was the position it would force him into that was unfavorable. Farrin summoned a field of translucent emerald around the device, slowing the detonation, as well as the explosion which was soon to follow. The explosive rocked the alley in what might sound like an elongated boom, the sound itself taking time to penetrate Farrin's temporal deceleration field, then another few seconds still to escape its effects. The time-turner, however, was already gone.
"Shite, shite, shite," he repeated under his breath.
To avoid any damage, he had backpedaled out into the street, into the open, then zoomed toward the alleyway Jun would have descended into earlier. Unaware of Lone Wolf's strategy, his decision to let them go, for now, Farrin had double-timed it across that street, doing his best to avoid such open spaces. Another bomb spat up. Another field. Then a second, he zig-zagged around the devices, then slid into the alley, the slowed force of the bombs washing over him and sending him into a tumble. Luckily, he hadn't been caught close enough to suffer real damage, but it was closer than he would have liked.
Coming to a stand, he leaned against the alley wall. "Feckin hell," he sighed. Hero Prep had not been anywhere near as intense. There was plenty of learning hero law, ethics, and how to master one's quirk, but the simulations were juvenile compared to UAU's. Farrin would look to Jun. "Yuh alright?" He'd ask, assuming she was in decent enough condition after her own explosive run-in with Lone Wolf's traps.

While the dark Sin had been removed from the board for now, the hurricane was whipping up angrier winds and raining bullets. It was definitely moving up a category. "Gaoth mhór" (Big storm), he said under his breath, turning to the building the others were holed up in and starting over to them.
He entered just in time to catch the tail-end of the conversation. Not a bad idea given Ironclad's ability, but if she suffered any sort of long-term fatigue from quirk use as he did, well, the question became would she be able to protect herself continually while keeping this safe room together? Farrin could keep that field around the dark Sin up for a while, but if he threw too many fields up, especially larger ones, and tried keeping them for too long - they would all collapse.
"I could also try erectin a field around the buildin, literally slow the effects o' damage, but I think our best course is ta' run 'em back ta' the safe zone. Fer one, I can't speak fer you, Ironclad, but continual use o' me quirk like that would tucker me out sooner. Dangerous option if we're movin' further inta' the city. Secondly, the storm is gettin' worse n' there could be more enemies around. I dun' like unpredictable. The only way we know fer certain that they're safe is bringin em' ta' the safe zone. Now, I could speed us all up, get us there faster. It will tire me out a bit, but I'll be the only one taxed n' it definitely won't be as bad as coverin' the buildin'."
As Farrin explained his thoughts, he deposited some of the unconscious thugs from outside on the ground. The civilians came first, but he couldn't leave the fellas, robotic or not, out there to 'die." The Black Sin would be kept safe by the very field that contained him, so at least that wasn't a worry.
"We can carry the injured, n' the ones in shape ta' run I can speed up too. Make it in one go, bring 'em somewhere we know they're safe, then move back out."
If the group agreed. Farrin would see to it swiftly that each hero-aspirant, as well as those civilians in good enough condition to run, were encased in personal temporal acceleration fields. It would feel like an adrenaline shot, waking them the hell up as the body, as well as the brain, came to find the world had seemingly slowed. He would scoop up any too injured to run, and the trio could be off.

His wrist grazed his lips, clearing them of spittle. Disgusting. Not only did Toxin's toxin play hell on the lungs, it smelt of death. Decay. Absolute feckin shite.
"Dun' yuh' go countin' me out yet, lass," Farrin called back through grit teeth.
Toxin wasted no time. He aimed his pistol, and let loose. A volley flew Farrin's way, only to meet a translucent-emerald field, where the bullets hung nearly still. They appeared almost entirely unmoving. He had had enough. The time had come. The sands of the hourglass ran empty.
"Besides," he started, bursting once more into a blur.
He held his breath, blazing through the gas, slid under the field anchoring the bullets to near stillness, and rose to his feet. The path had cleared in his wake, sheer speed whipping the winds into a frenzy and casting away the cloud. Toxin took aim, but before the pistol's iron sights could line with the target, Farrin was gone.
The hero-student seemingly reappeared just below Toxin, anger burning in his eyes, then dropping to his fist. He rose into a second uppercut, this one carrying the searing heat of a Farrin furious.
Toxin's mask shattered, the man thrust several meters up, then crashed again into the ground. This time - devoid of consciousness.
Farrin stood his height, spit to his side, then locked his eyes on Toxin's unconscious form. Then, he turned to face Freja before he continued, "seems ta me yuh already handled thing on yer end."
On Freja's side of the street, Dancer was already lying unconscious. It had taken every last morsel of strength to make his final move, and the girl's kick landed against the very ribs her bat had broken a moment prior. He was built for speed and agility, not endurance. But she had caught him with the bat, which shattered his meager defense. The kick was icing on the cake.
A squawk robbed the students of their triumph, pulling Farrin's attention up atop the nearby buildings. There, the murder waited. Dozens of crows, probably hundreds, lined the edges of each building. Then, they took flight. The murder dove low, almost as if to attack the students as well, but they passed harmlessly, flying into Toxin, Dancer, and the muscled-up mooks beside them. One by one, their enemies disappeared.
"What the? Oi! Absolutely not!" Farrin said stumbling forward into a fatigued sprint.
He ran for the closest goon, and dove to cover the fella, but one of the shadowed avians crashed into the thug first, and so he disappeared. It took all of a moment for the murder to clean the scene, and disappear. Suddenly, it was as if the fight never happened.
"Son uv a-" Farrin shouted, rolling over onto his back. "What in the bloody hell was that!"
Meanwhile, a ways away still, Corvidae sighed. "Well, it seems she lives to die another day. Oh well. We've gained some insight at quite the meager cost. Best I inform the others." With that, and one of his crows, Corvidae disappeared.
Back on the street, Farrin sat up, looking back to Freja. "How're yuh' holdin' up over there, lass?" She literally had a few knives poking out of her leg and her shoulder but held her own. Had the weapons dug deep, he was already digging for his phone, but honestly, he could probably run her to the hospital faster than an ambulance might reach them if needed.
