Farrin latched his lips shut and held his breath. His lungs spasmed, demanding he let another cough loose, but doing so meant taking in more of the gas. Defiance ruled his will, discipline defined his form. Together, they flew Farrin forward toward the future, a future where his fist rattled Toxin's brain.
Each missed shot from Toxin's heavy pistol burst into another cloud, albeit smaller than the one he emitted himself. Farrin dodged, but even letting this guy fire was a danger. He had to finish this fast, and so when he crossed the distance, the time-turner thrust his fist into the villain's mask. A crack journeyed across the mask's eyes, and the blow carried Toxin back several meters. A lone shot pierced Farrin's leg. Even mid-air, Toxin had taken aim and fired.
Searing heat flowered from his leg, and Farrin was forced to take a breath - of the deadly gas. The hero-student fell to a knee and started hacking up the air in his lungs. Fatigue took hold of the villain, weighing his cloak by tons. He was slow to recover. The villain had taken more damage, but if Farrin kept breathing the gas in, he wouldn't be able to move. Like a black and white brush against the noxious fog, Farrin blurred back a few steps, out of the gas cloud, where he tried to clear his lungs. He couldn't answer Freja, but she still had a problem of her own to deal with.
The shot from Freja's bat had shattered something. Several somethings, but the Dancer wasn't entirely done. He leaned on all fours, slowly picking himself up as Freja called to Farrin. "Turn your back on me?" He finally hissed, summoning two more knives in a single hand, then throwing them Freja's way. With all the strength he could muster, he pushed himself back up onto his feet, and leaped toward the girl, summoning one more knife and taking a swing at her throat. One way or another, the curtains were coming to a close on this conflict.

It felt more like a bounce and he figured he was going to have to work with that, but if Miroru felt like she was sprinting through the air, maybe Farrin's end result would look the same. That would certainly be ideal. Running was sort of Farrin's thing.
"Heh, little ranged gadget I've worked inta me' hero outfit is sort a similar in that by tying its use ta' me quirk it's pretty useless ta' those that might manipulate it."
The cannons weren't entirely related to the current subject, but now that they were entering into the realm of hero tactics and the tools involved, he couldn't help but start on about his wrist-mounted weaponry. Then, he rounded back to the conversation. Yeah, even if Farrin had some ranged options now, taking down a flier wouldn't make for the easiest task.
"Yeah, fliers n' avoidin' other potential problems. Adhesives n' such. Me' little launchers may be a nice new addition ta' me' arsenal, but they're new n' since I can't guarantee they won't take damage in a scrap, I need ta' be able ta' close in on 'em flying sorts wit' or without 'em."
With that, Farrin backed up a step. "Alright, round two," he muttered, then broke into a sprint, and a leap. He thrust his right foot down, accelerating the air below his feet, lobbing himself upward. He repeated the process, the lunge narrowing as his air step did slowly shift into something more akin to a run rather than a series of jumps. He made ten steps this time... then crashed again.
"I'm okay," he coughed up, "doin' better e'ery time."

Most in Japan knew a little bit of his home language, but not enough to really converse in. Idaho was basically across the country from New York, but they both could call the United States home... even if Farrin wasn't actually born there.
<Oh, so yer from the States,> Farrin started in English, walking away from the dorm building and down the lane towards the training fields, then continued, <I'm from New York meself.>
Their fellow students would come into view as Farrin and JoJo approached the training grounds. Speedsters, who Farrin was faster than of course, ran circles around the track. One student with a fire-breathing quirk battled against another student with iron skin in one of the sparring circles. Further, in the distance, a few students made displays and taunted one another as they lifted absurdly sized weights.
<So, the place is packed wit' high-quality equipment. E'erythin yuh' need ta' train up yer quirk, body, n' mind all packed in the several training facilities,> Farrin pointed to a few buildings that lined the edge of the open field, <they've programmable trainin' bots, yuh can request personal training sessions n' matches wit' the professors - most o' which are former or part-time pro-heroes.>
Though Farrin had dusted most of his peers in a scrap, Leonid had nearly broken his arm - though Farrin had nearly toppled the professor so those were certainly some results. Dauntless was another of the pro-heroes Farrin faced down in a match. Another loss, but not bad considering both battles happened within the first few weeks of Farrin's arrival.
<Cafeteria is in the lecture hall buildin' n' it's stocked wit' loads of options,> he continued, then pointed toward a far wall with a large map beside it, <continue that way n' yuh' start headin' toward grounds beta n' gamma, each o' which are like small cities where we run drills. Pretty crazy stuff.> Though UAU was packed with people, too many for Farrin's liking, he couldn't deny the quality of equipment and sheer scale they went to create the perfect training grounds for aspiring heroes.

Whatever grudge she carried from their little disagreement back in the training facility, it draped over her eyes like a muddied veil. They didn't have time for this. Luckily, she was quick to rectify the situation. Rather than ramble on the obviousness of Farrin's statement, she actually took the risk of leaning over the edge for a moment - with a rough position too.
As long as he could keep up? Jun's presumptuous nature would one day get the better of her. Few were those Farrin couldn't dust, not that he would put that time-turned speed to the test in this scenario. Too many mine bombs to rush ahead like that.
"We should trail the way I came up. Only mine was on the bottom floor n' it's already been detonated," Farrin started, rolling over a few times, then darting in a crouch to the door.
Assuming Jun followed, Farrin would dart down the stairwell, making for the bottom floor. "So, we move along the alleyways ta' flank the buildin', right? As good a shot as he is, he can only be lookin' one way at a time. We get around ta' the backside o' the buildin, maybe we come up from beneath n' try ta' surprise him."
It wouldn't be Farrin's first direct bout with one of UAU's educators. He fought the likes of Leonid in his first week and nearly toppled the giant. He threw down with Dauntless as well. Both battles were lost, but Farrin had far exceeded the professors' expectations. He could do it here too. They only needed to get in close. So, once on the first floor, Farrin flipped through the shattered storefront and sped into the alleyway Jun had originally mentioned. There, he would wait for her approach.

The brunt of the enemy force had crashed against him in the lobby, but even in fewer numbers the villain bots and actors proved more difficult as he rose. A limp left arm wasn't making the situation any easier. He had taken a few blunt strikes from metal rods and stun batons on the way up, but the time-turner was in one piece.
Unlike Natsumi, however, Farrin had only found three hostages. He searched every corner, under every table and chair, and meticulously studied every floor. He wasn't missing any, but more were certainly stored up in the higher level closer to Natsumi. Hopefully, it wouldn't be too much weight, bogging her down. Farrin three followed the student through the stairwell, though they remained two levels below him at all times. With their back secured, he knew, with enough distance, they would remain safe.
When he made it up about halfway through the building, it was to a larger office, this one probably two stories in height, with more of the larger villain bots. "Ere' we go again," he sighed.
"Stay down!" He shouted for the hostages to hear.
They would remain two floors below, while Farrin ventured forward. He leaped, taking another stun round to his boot. The shock zapped at his leg, but the armored boot ate some of the damage, saving the limb. The time-turner crashed into the villain bot, then thrust his fist into its leg. Again and again, he pummeled on the metal appendage. And that's when Natusmi burst into the room as she ventured down the stairwell Farrin had risen from a moment prior.

Never have to refill your bottle. Kei would be a boon in the desert. If they could reproduce his quirk, or somehow apply it to several locations at once, he could solve water crises around the world! That might be a boon to Sada's upcoming venture. One he dreaded to think on, so he wouldn't.
"Will it only replicate water content or can yuh' replicate whatever it's mixed wit' as well?" He asked, certainly on the blood question's periphery, but not there yet. "Like, if I make a protein shake usin' a water base, would yuh only replicate the water or whatever the waters become attached ta'?"
Of course, Farrin mind lingered on exercise and practice. He wasn't thinking of exploding people or Nomu anything of the like. Kei's change of topic would land with effect. Farrin knew the answer, but it only reminded him of his own demons. The one's he had faced before, those he would face soon enough.
"Four years now. Spent a year wit' 'em before startin' Hero Prep, then continued trainin' wit' them after school."
Without them, and Sada, he wouldn't have become the person he was. After seven years alone on New York City's streets, they had become his lifeline. His family. His reason.
And he would see them again. It was the first thought that crossed his mind as the trudging crowd behind them sped ahead, now surrounding both Farrin and Kei. Yes, he had to see them and to make sure Kei got out of this unharmed. Whoever these people were, they clearly weren't friendly.
"Two little punks out on their lonesome, this late?" The lead thug taunted, despite it still being relatively early. Well, at least not actually late yet. The lead's eyes swept over Farrin's attire. "Oh, are you two play-pretend heroes? Trying to grow up big and strong? Well, if you want to live to see that happen I suggest turning over any and all valuables." One thug latched onto Farrin. Another made a move to grab Kei. "Or things are gonna get ugly."

Though none stopped breathing, all were coughing up a lung. They began to spasm, their bodies tightening up as they attempted to expel the poisons - unsuccessfully. So, Farrin had to act fast. And he did.
The time-turner grinned, catching Freja's comment in words that arrived normally, unlike the sluggish way he typically heard the world in his temporal state. Farrin blew ahead, blazing in on Toxin when the villain fired one shot, then another. Farrin dipped left, then blasted ahead His fist crashed hard against the villain's mask, throwing him to the ground. When he turned, it was to the sight of Freja's impenetrable defense.
"Not bad. Not bad at all," Toxin mused, standing his height.
He took aim, and fired again. The time-turner dodged, right into a spire of gas that launched up from the ground. One whiff, and the hero-student tripped, joining the goons in their fit of coughs. Deadly was the quirk that turned the body against itself. Still, Farrin was speed made manifest. He launched up onto his fit, then kicked away from the gas, shaping back into his fighting form.
Meanwhile, Dancer was not prepared for Freja's accelerated speed. Natural agility and speed were all well and good, but she hadn't only closed the gap, she tore through it. He parried one swing, blocked another, but couldn't turn back the attack. Instead, he leaped back and threw another three knives Freja's way, two high and one low. What he hadn't expected was the grapple line. As he continued to hop back a few paces, the line launched and snatched him by the shoulder, pulling him in. This could spell trouble. Farrin steadied himself before the vortex, stared the devil in the eyes, and swung. His fist flew wide, blood blinding his eyes, and a concussion fogging his brain. The limb fell limp, as the Alter fired his own cross-counter. The blow landed like bricks against the skull. An audible crack rang up and down the alley, as Farrin slumped back against the wall behind him, blood seeping down his face and into his attire.
Thea spoke, with newfound confidence in her voice, but the words were little more than muted garble. Sada. Oberon. These were words, sounds, with which he was well acquainted. They occupied his every waking thought. Through all his dreams too. It was supposed to be them, but the dreams grew increasingly clear, Farrin would face his demons alone.
"Sada," he mumbled beneath bloody breath, laying outstretched fingers on the building wall behind him.
Farrin squeezed every ounce of pain, regret, frustration, and rage he had, balled the searing heat into his fist, snatched the unseen coin out of the air, and swung with all the strength he could muster. He was lightning in the wind. The blow cracked against the Alter's jaw and blasted the temporal copy back. He couldn't sift through the confusion. It didn't matter that it was Thea that uttered Sada's name. It didn't matter that he was practically bleeding from the brain. Nothing mattered. It was supposed to be him and his Sada for all of time, but he kept seeing some inevitable fate, one he would not allow to pass. He had to live. He had to see her again.
"I will survive!"
From the rooftop above, Melodist watched the scene unfold. The newest, meekest addition to convergence finally found his fight. Was it too late though? Even if he succeeded here, there was naught but pain and heartache ahead. He would suffer. Then he would either become one of the many or perish.
Meanwhile, there was a score to settle. One which required his immediate attention, because he did know. Or more accurately, he remembered. The Mentat's quirk wasn't some three lines scribbled across a dossier, it was a thousand fractures behind the composer's mask, million years of pain compressed into a fraction of a second, and let loose on his mind time and again. Not this time. Never again.
"Of course, she is you," he sneered, playing his tune, and dancing across the roof, watching the Mentat sprint below.
"I'm surprised she stuck around this long. Don't you usually flee by now?" the Melodist taunted. "Heartless is he who casts away she who stayed. You never do."
Rare were those times the Mentat made it beyond the first year, but one way or another he always left. He always lied. And he always failed. And this time the Mentat remembered. Only, such failure usually only befell them after they had removed Melodist from the equation. Not this time.
"Deal with him," the Melodist uttered, two suited figures stepping from the shadows atop the roof.
"Scales," Ouroboros's foot soldiers. They were trained to the utmost degree in the art of subduing and destroying the serpent's enemies. Whether they possessed quirks or not, each was armed with SMGs or pistols loaded with rounds meant to take down the toughest quirks. Their suits provided satisfactory defense, and their knives could carve through stone. Both leaped below, just ahead of Mateo and took aim - ready to fire. He, Jason, and Natsumi would need to watch some high-level sparring matches between heroes or some sort one day. So, despite the frustrations Farrin faced off the field, on the field he was still every bit his ever-so-slightly cheerier self. Enough that the smirk he'd been wearing clung to his face as the Bone-Blades made his move.
The student wound up, then sprung forward toward Boy-Blue. The winds were made visible as they spiraled around the Bone-Blades, his speed dusting his previous jump, but as Jason said, he repeated his pattern. So, Boy-Blue wasted no time leaving not one, but three spheres behind. And as soon as Bone-Blades landed - the spheres exploded.
Bone-Blades was awash with sapphire light. The explosions threw him back several meters, the students landing in a roll until he jabbed his blades into the gravel below. He sprung up, then hesitated. The damage was visible. He could still fight, that much was clear, but should he?
<Well, lookit that! On the money wit' that one.>
Farrin figured Bone-Blades possessed little patience and would charge again, but Jason had it down to the letter. Both combatants, while better off than many of their peers, were still clearly novices. It was a game of whose go-to strategy would prevail.
<He's winded, but he'll keep goin'. I think yer' still on it though, he's gonna settle on what's comfortable again.>
As if on cue, Bone-Blades leaped again. The winds whipped into a frenzy again as he crossed over to Boy-Blue, but this time Boy-Blue took a step forward, then laid out several spheres just ahead of himself. Bone-Blades leaped again, uncaring for the most obvious trap, then Blue backpedaled and set the explosive off. The damage was guaranteed, Blades engulfed again, Blue carried away by the extreme forces of his own quirk. Blades rolled away but rose once more. This was not a good idea.
<C'mon, I think we better got down there n' stop 'em from goin' again.>
With that, Farrin was up and on the move, stepping down the hill.

Apogee was the junior hero of the firm, and Pinnacle's mentee. Fella possessed a killer electricity quirk, though in truth it started out as nothing more than some static buildup. Farrin was quite familiar with Apogee's story by now. Picked on and bullied because his meager quirk didn't compare to his cohorts, but Apo had worked like a madman. Static buildup became a spark, and a spark became a zap, and a zap became a small sphere of actual lightning.
Man. Quirks were wild.
It was a sentiment shared between the two. Though, that did beg the question, what exactly was Kei's quirk? He hadn't quite avoided the topic but he didn't demonstrate or otherwise approach it either. Many of the combat "villain apprehension" track students withheld their abilities out of fear of giving their cohorts an edge over them. Farrin wasn't the most forthcoming on the exact nature of his quirk either but had no issue laying out the basics. Usually, he laid out the necessities. He could make things go fast or slow. Only a few knew the nature of such manipulations. Kei ranked among those few.
"So, I dun' think I've asked yuh yet but I'm curious, what's yer quirk, lad? Is it useful in puttin all these tools together or somethin else entirely?"
The few crowds thinned out to fewer. A few wayward souls were on their way to local pubs, others already on the way out, stumbling with every step. Harmless though. Tokyo was an incredibly busy city, so it wasn't surprising to see so many out blowing off steam after work. There were a few fellas tight together a couple of meters behind the UAU duo that didn't stand among the drunken sort. Oddly quiet, but that didn't much of anything, right?
So, Farrin continued to lead them onward. A few more blocks, a couple of turns, and they would fall within Above & Beyond's opening patrol routes. Farrin popped his pocket watch out, thumbing it open, then pocketed it again. Yeah, they might even run into Apo heading out on his nightly evening patrol. Farrin then turned back to the conversation.
"Yup, they're the real deal. Not in it fer fame n' whatnot, n' even donate ta' charities at the end o' each month dependin on how much the agency brought it."
They weren't the biggest or most reputable agency, but Farrin wouldn't have chosen any other to be trained by. Exemplary heroes says him. Exactly the sort of heroes students should aspire to. Doing good just because they had the ability to do so.

Flame quirks were aplenty out in the world, but to be able to both sear your enemies and salve your allies? Amazing. The wings would have helped had they been functional, but at least fire would make for a previous obvious signal.
"Alrighty then, if yuh find the bomb first, shoot some o' that fire in the air n' I'll come runnin," Farrin responded after Auden revealed his quirk.
So they each had easy means of getting the other's attention even from across great distances. That was one item knocked off the list. As long as they could actually find the bomb out in the pipe works maze things should be fairly easy. Though, who knew what else was lying in wait for the students?
It was then Farrin caught the fella checking him out. Even Farrin didn't know how Sada would have reacted had she witnessed as much. Bold move, bud. Bold move.
"I'm flattered, bud, but I'm also taken," he responded.
Back home Farrin had a head for romance and flirtatiousness. He was too busy trying to survive. A few years into his training though, after meeting his favorite dragon after crashing into Hero Prep's bleachers, well he learned. Not that it required all that much with Sada. The feelings they shared were on sight.
A bell boomed in the distance. The simulation had begun. Farrin threw his personal field up. Now, temporally execrated, he burst down the path opposite of Auden. "Remember, shoot some flames inta' the air if yuh' find the bomb first, n' keep a lookout in case I throw a field up high - if I find it first." With that, he turned a corner that took him deeper into the heart of Ground Gamma.

For all of a second. Stasis. Reversion. Nothing would come between Farrin and his Sada. He closed the distance and wrapped his hands around the entity's throat. He pulled his right arm back and fired his fist forward, aiming for the entity's masked face. Then it froze once more.
"Your mistake is believing I have a hand in this. No. This is the event. This is what turns your kind. Sometimes she's killed, sometimes you never meet to begin with, and sometimes she leaves. After all, why cling to a defect like you," he ended with a whisper.
"Enough!" Farrin shouted, breaking through the entity's hold and taking his swing.
It was gone. It was to his left, then on his right. Behind Farrin now, thrusting a leg into the time-turner's back, sending the young Farrin flying. He crashed against an unseen wall. Somehow he was altering the space within the temporal currents, but Farrin was quick to recover. He pushed off the wall and charged again. He blazed across the distance and swung again.
"Such weakness, how could you ever hope to protect her? Of course, you'll lose her. It is inevitable."
"I'll die first!"
"Quite possibly."
"Yuh' won't lay a hand on her, neither will any other villain. You, Magister, herself, whatever conflict comes her way, yuh'll always find me there. I. Will. Keep. Her. Safe."
Farrin swung, and this time the shot connected, throwing the entity back. Finally. A solid hit.

Farrin just wasn't obliterating boulders with ease without that technique he was working on back in the training facility, and he had yet to master that move. In this particular instance, firepower was a direct reference to brute force, but he wasn't about to correct Miroru on his meaning. Call it ego, but Farrin wasn't about to argue against the merits of his chronokinetic speed.
Though he hadn't caught every word while airborne, Farrin appreciated Miroru's support. Though it hadn't quite reached the exhilaration of his first chronokinetic, the experience of near-flight was a close second. Lacking wings or some other means of natural flight, this would certainly work. He wanted another round with Leonid already.
When Farrin recovered from the fall, he had a few notes ready.
"Yeah, it was far easier than tryin' deceleration fer' pseudo-flight, but I went a lil' too hard on the acceleration. Gonna need ta' give it a few more goes until I nail down the right amount fer' me weight. Clearly, it's no' the same as runnin' so it'll take some time ta' acclimate, but this is definitely the way ta' go." Farrin paused for a moment, thinking of Miroru's boots and the support student she mentioned. "Yeah I've been headin' over ta' support for a few tools. I know yuh' said it was ta' compensate fer speed n' maneuver, but what gave yuh' the idea ta' go that route?" He asked, standing back to his height and getting ready for another air run.

His potential options were limited at the moment. In a real-life situation, Farrin would have hated the wait, even more than he did now, but getting himself hit, or killed if it were real, wouldn't do anybody any good. Even if he did get a bead on Lone Wolf's position, he wasn't going to outshoot him with the miniature cannons on his wrists. While talented, Farrin was still fairly novice with long-ranged weaponry. Lone Wolf was a professional. No, for now, the best option was to wait for the opportune moment, then hit hard and fast.
That was until he heard a familiar voice calling out to him. It was the second-year student from the training facility, Jun. Rather than stand and make himself an easy target, in case Lone Wolf was scanning the rooftops, Farrin rolled on over a few meters, then pushed himself up against more stone cover at the rooftop's edge. So, she had the same idea - well, at least this far in.
"Got any idea where he's holed up?" Farrin asked. "I didn't have much info ta' work wit' while down on the streets n' just got up 'ere now."
Finally, a crack of the rifle. That sounded like it was coming from almost directly behind them. It also meant Lone Wolf had his sights set on someone else - unless it was a feign. The time-turner was on his way to Above & Beyond agency, decked out in his new and improved threads, made by none other than Kei Hada, to put this new outfit to the test. Kei tagged along too, at the agency's request. They were curious to meet the second-year support student that had been lending Farrin a hand. Maybe that meant some future opportunities for the lad?
While Farrin's outfit looked the same as the one made by Hero Prep's own support students, this particular version of the outfit proved to be far stronger. The thing could take bullets, knives, and even some prolonged fire under various elemental quirks. Still, Barty, being Farrin's guardian in Japan, wanted to put it to the test personally. They would have made their way to the agency earlier, but Farrin had some late classes today, pushing the practice out into the evening.
"Thanks fer comin' along," Farrin said as the two continued through the city. It was relatively quiet this far from Tokyo's heart. Not entirely devoid of crowds, but there weren't too many. "N' fer puttin this thing together overall. Fits well, n' I just feel stronger too!"
Farrin wasn't entirely sure how Kei put this one together. He wasn't as familiar with what particular materials maintained such flexibility while providing such protection. He did know, however, that some of his hair was weaved into the outfit. That was kind of his idea, and as weird as it was, the young lad had been saving up strands over the weeks for this exact purpose. See, his hair could retain some of that temporal energy he exuded with his personal chronokinetic field. So, it stood to reason that by weaving some of his hair in, his suit could retain trace amounts of that power from which he could pull when needed. As a result, it took Farrin longer to tire from quirk use and increased his stamina. He gave himself a pat on the back for that one.
"In any case, I'm sure yer gonna meet Barty, n' maybe Apogee. Barty is a big bastard, n' will come off as incredibly aloof, mechanical even, but he's a good sort. Apo is jus' a few years older than us. Loudmouth, but also a good fella."
Aside from Sada and Kenta, Kei would be the first person Farrin actually introduced to his 'sort of hero family' in Japan. None of them by blood, but Above & Beyond, even its main hero, Pinnacle, had all had a hand in training Farrin despite how busy they were over the years. While it wasn't the largest agency in Japan, they were all good people. Hopefully, something good could come of this meeting for Kei, as a way to repay the lad for all his help.
