recarious as the situation was, Farrin felt right at home. A proper scrap. A true back alley brawl. Back home, or rather, when Farrin was homeless, he found himself in all sorts of trouble. He lacked discipline but kicked and swung, and fought with all he had when necessary. Now, the boy had become a man, and the man was made into a machine.
He hadn't caught Freja's little signal, and was about to turn and whale on whichever thug came closest to her, but he found himself biting back a laugh when she took her swing and doubled one of the goons over. An audible crack signaled something breaking, and the man looked like he was about to lose his lunch. Quirkless though Freja was, she turned out to be a genuine threat with her faithful bat in hand.
With Freja's ploy expired, it unlikely that the enemy would fall for her trickery again, but there were other cards to play. Farrin was a blur, his fist cracked into one thug's cheek, then smashed another's jaw. He quickly turned to face Freja. "Lass, yer 'bout ta' move fast. Breath slowly n' try ta' stay calm." He flushed an open palm her way and encased his classmate in a temporal acceleration field, not unlike his own. As long as she didn't move too far away from him, he could focus enough to keep her field up. The few people that experienced Farrin's accelerations fields described it as something akin to an adrenaline shot - except the adrenaline was lightning in their veins. Most people freaked out as the world seemed to slow down around them, but the boons were nigh unparalleled: speed not unlike Farrin's own. As soon as Freja settled, she would move fast and hit hard.
Meanwhile, Farrin turned to face the many enemies before them, and in a burst of speed, barreled straight into them. He was a flurry of fists, thrashing and basing the goons about. Large and small, they were all blown away by the time-turner's speed and martial prowess.
In the distance, Corvidae wheezed, "It would appear he's as sprightly as ever. Making more friends too. I think it best we do something about that. Toxin. Dancer. You two are up. I want the girl gone." It wasn't the young Chronomancer's time yet, but it was best to nip his potential network of allies in the bud.
"It will be done," Toxin replied, then the two disappeared.
The duo plague masked henchmen would reappear from shadows behind the line of henchmen. Dancer, wielding two knives wasted no time leaping toward Freja, taking two swings at her with his blades. Toxin, however, approached Farrin. "Impressive display, young time-turner. Impressive indeed." A sickly green cloud oozed from Toxin, slowly wafting along the ground.
"So, two o' yuh the ones in charge o' this lot?" Farrin asked. He knew the other new enemy was charging Freja, but he couldn't afford to turn his back on the villain before him. Not when quirks were coming into play. Speaking of quirks, whether or not either of Dancer's blades struck Freja, he would quickly leap back and throw both weapons her way with extreme precision, and it didn't stop there. One blade after another appeared in his hand, the villain throwing them in a constant stream toward Freja. Some of the henchmen were getting up too. This fight wasn't over yet.

In his eyes, some thug's jaw was on the receiving end of a nasty jab. A normal man would have lost some teeth, but this was Farrin's imagination and in his imagination, even lowly thugs were packing some power. He dipped right again, then swiveled left. Jab, jab, hard cross-shot, uppercut! And then... he cut the combo short at hearing Emilia's voice. Not a scratch of embarrassment marked him. Anyone who had encountered the time-turner at this point knew he was almost always training anyway.
He dug in his pocket for the family heirloom, a golden pocket watch with an emerald encrusted at the center of its casing, then thumbed it open. "No worries, lass. Yer right on time actually," he responded, shutting the watch closed and shoving it back in his pocket. Dangerous as these exercises could be, Farrin didn't' go anywhere without his pocket watch.
He hopped in place a few, rolling his neck, limbering up for the simulation they were about to run. "N' dun' mention it. It was all you, really." She seemed the sort to attribute too much of her own success to others. Pride, in controlled quantities, was a good thing. Let it get the best of you and it could cost your life, but the right amount made heroes into Hercules - not to be confused with Herculean, the American hero he had mentioned last time they met.
"Yuh said last time yer quirk makes yuh' tough n' strong," some of which he saw firsthand, "so I suppose it's only right I detail mine, especially given the circumstances." They only had another minute or so before the starting bell rang. "Basically, I can speed things up or slow 'em down. If yuh' keep close, I can speed you up too, which I think might make fer a decent openin' strategy, but after that, we might need ta split up. The exercise will be timed n' Ground Gamma is rather sizable. Thoughts?" They didn't have long, but running in without any sort of strategy was liable to cost them the entire simulation. Something basic was better than nothing and would have to do.

He couldn't help but notice some similarities among the combat track. Too many students relied on their quirks alone to pass the Entrance Exams. The definitive lack of martial prowess among his peers was profound.
<I've noticed some comparable issues among our peers. Overly reliant on their quirks wit' no apparent experience in hand ta' hand combat or other forms o' self-defense n' the like.>
As Jason said, many were also unfamiliar with the many laws erected around hero society, but that was a little less surprising. How many people really dug deeply into their country's system of laws unless it was necessary? The written component to the Entrance Exam was important, but the practical test weighed more heavily on each participant's overall score. You would think for the sake of that exam alone the students would have trained in some form of martial combat. Luckily, the two sparring students didn't seem to stand in the camp of the uninitiated.
Farrin smirked at Jason's use of gaming terminology. In his previous life, Farrin would sneak into the arcade when he scrounged up enough loose change or the rare few dollars somebody dropped... or when he got a hold of someone's wallet. He wasn't the best at fighting games, but his time-turned senses could actually be used to greatly improve his performance.
Memories of yesteryear faded in favor of the display below. Bone-Blades crossed the distance and was swiping wildly at his opposition, but Boy-Blue wasn't entirely unfamiliar with close-range combat. He dodges the worst of it until one slash caught his arm and a boot shoved into his core, knocking him back. Still, it was an impressive display of evasion. Blue, rolled backward, then leaped onto his feet, leaving another explosive sphere behind to do exactly as Jason said - zone. The sphere burst, causing no damage to Bone-Blades, but giving Blue some distance to work with.
<Seems as these two have some idea o' what they're doin' though. Bone-Blades may've scored some blows, but the fact that Boy-Blue is still up n' ready speaks ta' his experience. What do yuh' think will happen next?> He asked, curious to hear Jason's own observations.

His arms were taut, tightened as much as his muscled allowed, but the machine offered resistance still. Failure took the shape of gunmen prepared to fire. They represented a burning fuse, and the metaphorical bomb was about to burst. Farrin would let it. Failure was a thought not entertained. So, he leaned back one final time, then pushed again.
The villain bot budged. Farrin rolled out from under the machine, suffering only a bite on the outside of his left bicep. He was clipped, his arm numb. One of the stun rounds caught him.
"Shite," he cursed under his breath, lunging up into movement.
He could work with one arm. He had to. So, he burst into a blur of movement again and took to the second floor. He leaped, grabbing onto the base of the railing that lined the second-floor overpass, then pulled himself up. His muscles cried in protest, feeling the effects of the stun round even in other parts of his body, but Farrin batted down those cries and sprang to life, pulling himself over the railing and tackling the row of gunmen.
A few flashes of firearms fire, and the thuds of traded blow, and the scrap was over. Farrin rose, victorious over the gathering of goons. The first and second floors, at least around the lobby area, were clear. The battle had not come without a cost, however.
His left arm was as lifeless as a phantom limb. Though its presence was an undeniable fact, he could not will the appendage to move. He sighed, trekking over to the stairwell. Whether his left arm recovered soon or not, he had a job to do. It was time to start moving up the building. Hopefully, Natsumi was having better luck.

Very old if one was referring to the books. He would have to reveal his inner nerd some other time, though it was noted that Miroru was crossing the threshold from sparring partner to actual friend. Someone that could fight, knew their Lord of the Rings, and possibly Star Wars too? That was someone worth talking to on the regular.
"I hear that. Me' quirk doesn't do too much fer raw firepower outside a speedin' up me punches n' such, so this lil' maneuver is more about addin tools ta' the arsenal fer me," he started. The Emerald Blade, once perfected, would offer some explosive firepower, but that would be reserved for the most enduring of enemies. It wasn't something to be used in every confrontation. "Outta curiosity, didja build 'em boots yerself or go ta' one o' the support department students?" He asked, taking one final stretch of the legs. Another shortcoming. While Farrin could slow things down at a range, he wasn't capable of much in the way of ranged damage. Instead, he turned to Kei from the support department to help him throw together some new gear to help him on that front. In the past, he couldn't conceive of relying on gear. Now, well, he wouldn't allow pride and hubris to cost innocent people their lives.
"Never met him. Hopefully, I won't need him," Farrin started. "Alright, 'ere we go."
And with that, Farrin broke into a sprint. Chronokinesis flared alive, his eyes burned gold, and he leaped up into the air. His mind centered on the heels of his foot, the soles of his boot, then he kicked. A small, shimmering field appeared just along the bottom of the boot, and a burst of air shot downward. Farrin lifted!
"Holy shite!"
He kicked again, then again. Three steps. Four! That was already more than he had accomplished via temporal deceleration. He made it all the way up to five before excitement got the better of him. His smile was quickly weighted down and he realized he was falling.
With a thud, he crashed onto the grass in a roll. When he stopped this time though, he quickly picked himself back up and his smile returned. "Holy shite!" He repeated, half laughing now. "Didja see that?" Yeah, Miroru was already familiar with flight, or sky walking as she coined it, but for Farrin that was his first real go. He had only managed three steps via deceleration. The count had doubled on his first try with Miroru's method. Progress. Some of Farrin's more distant relatives might have had a few jokes to crack, but to the time-turner, it really made no difference. Not unless he started insulting the Emerald Isle. He didn't seem the sort. More of a one-part friendly, one-part inquisitive kind of concoction.
<Likewise. N' yeah, seems ta' be a bit more than a handful made it out 'ere. Even more, if yuh count the West in general. Dun' mind the ol' lion though. I'm pretty sure he was around 'ere before the Quirk Emergence n' from what I gather Japan was quite different then,> he answered in English.
The two best universities Farrin knew of in regards to heroics were UAU and the Howlett Institute back stateside. Howlett could be a bit more extreme, as expected when considering American heroics, but both schools got results. So, of course, both also so massive influx from those possessing powerful quirks and goodwill, probably some trauma too, around the world. Would Farrin had ended up there had things back home not gone to shite? Who knew? It didn't really matter. He was here now, and he was fighting to become his best self.

<N' most o' my classes are along the combat track,> Villain Apprehension really, but they all knew what it really was. <I went ta' a Hero Prep school before UAU so I'm familiar wit' some o' the earlier material they're goin' over but no doubt UAU's more intense n' far better equipped.>
Back in Hero Prep, the few times the teachers sparred with their students, it was incredibly obvious they were taking it easy. Here, well, Farrin sparred with Leonid in his first week and nearly had his arm broken. Almost toppled the big cat though. That had earned Farrin a few more reputation points around campus.
<Can't speak fer' Boy-Blue over there,> Farrin nodded towards the kid with the azure aura, then shifted his gaze to the other student, <but Bone-Blades 'ere is definitely a sword dancer o' some sort. I've seen similar quirks. They spin a whole lot ta' confuse n' frighten their enemies while closin' the distance. I'm bettin he does somethin similar.>
The match began with the Boy-Blue, as Farrin nicknamed him, firing a few spheres of similarly blue light toward Bone-Blades. Then, the spheres exploded. Bone-Blades was fast though, he leaped to his left, then charged forward - and then came the spin moves Farrin anticipated. He spun like a top, closing in on Boy-Blue.

It was imperative to control one's breathing in battle. Doubly so when time was hastening your every move. Tucker out too soon and any difference in strength was but a moot point. The battle: a foregone conclusion. Fortunately, Farrin was well-versed in the art of the scrap and its many nuances. Like not just swinging wildly but enforcing disciplined control over the entirety of his body.
The rippling rise of the Black Sin's inky form against the rain, and following splat against the ground appeared to spell the end of their little back and forth. Still, the little general health indicator was yellow. On one hand, that meant Farrin hadn't taken it too far. On the other hand, what if the Sin recovered?
Farrin kneeled before the villain. The sound of scuffle still rang from the building at their side, which meant Ironclad was still up and kicking. If the thugs had any chance at all, Prism's arrival would certainly mark the steepest decline in their odds. Meanwhile, Farrin wasn't sure what to do with the Black Sin. It wasn't very hero-like to batter the clearly beaten, and there were more threats out there. Containing someone made from such a liquid-like substance wouldn't be easy. There was always the threat of another trouncing though.
"Be a good lad n' keep still, will yuh?"
Farrin backed up, and with the turn of a wrist, summoned another small temporal dome over the Sin. This one would stay in place for about a half hour. If hadn't returned in that time, then the odds were he was taken out of the exam. That wasn't going to happen. And if the Sin did try to escape, he'd be slowed to a snail's pace. For now, the threat was contained, and so Farrin started over to the others.

Even he wasn't accustomed to moving at such speeds, but the results were undeniable. During his first week at UAU, Farrin had given one of the pro-hero professors, Leonid, a run for his money. Almost toppled the giant, but ultimately fell short. Had he moved like this though, surely even the mighty beast hero would have fallen. His movements were a flash of temporal light - supercharged by Tatsuko's quirk. It was remarkably similar to Sada's own abilities.
After delivering what must have been a hundred jabs in all of a few seconds, Farrin cut his combo short and fixed his attention back on Tatsuko. "Yuh mean like a hero team?" He asked, considering the many variables at play. He hardly knew Tatsuko, but if her quirk revolved around empowering others, and he was the only one willing to accept such a boon, well it wasn't the worst idea. Hell, she and Sada could empower each other, leveling their team out as a whole when required. "I'm no' opposed to it. Though, yuh best know I kinda come as package deal wit' me partner, like relationship partner, Sada Tanaka. Her quirk is similar ta' yers in some ways. There are a few others I work wit' time n' again too" He considered the mixture, with Sada at least. Sada could come off as cold to some, but she was a big softie. "N' I do think we should sign up fer some hero simulations together. Yer quirk is certainly impressive n' definitely makes fer a good mix wit' me own, but it's probably best we put our abilities ta' the test together. Firm up a foundation o' team cohesion n' whatnot."
It was the next logical step to take. They hardly knew each other. Their approach to heroism and general priorities could be entirely incompatible. Farrin didn't doubt her resolve, but it was best they put this potential teamwork through its paces.

Especially the string of cusses popping up in the dialogue bubble. In the movie following Farrin's life, today included an excessive amount of bleeping. His vocabulary had been reduced to a series of expletives in the last few hours. He was about to add one more to today's tally.
"Well shite, that is an interestin idea," he pondered, rubbing his chin.
For days now he had been practicing this pseudo-flight technique to no avail. He had ruled propulsion out due to a definitive lack of wings. Instead, Farrin focused on making the air as similar to good ol' solid ground as possible. He capable of it for sure. That much he had confirmed. As long as the fields weren't too large, and with some intense concentration, he could slow his deceleration fields to a point of near-stasis. But, Miroru was on the money. In more ways than she even knew.
"Yeah, actually, if I can use acceleration ta' pull this off, it'd be magnitudes easier. I often liken me' control over the fields ta swimming in rapids. Acceleration is like just goin wit' the flow, whereas deceleration requires some resistance ta' control movement. If I use acceleration ta' basically create some thrust, I can also keep movin n' think less on balance."
Farrin could summon deceleration fields below his boots in a similar manner Miroru proposed, basically creating the steps just below his foot, but there was no support. It was up to him to resist the air currents and balance himself out as he leaped. Her proposed method would give him a little boost each time he jumped... stepped... ran... whatever method of traversal this was most accurately likened to be. He would still need to keep his balance up but, hopefully, it would be easier.
"When didja get those things made?" He asked, nodding toward her boots while stretching out his arms and legs.
It was best to limber up before each trial run. In theory, her method would be easier. But, who knew the number of unknown variables they were about to play with? Time could be a fickle mistress. And even if it did work, the odds of mastering this new method of sky walking on the first go were quite low. Here's hoping those odds weren't zero.

A series of booms signaled the detonation of those mines just in front of the fake office building that made the alleyway wall.
Farrin darted around the corner and leaped into the building. Time's sixth sense flared. Danger. Farrin tucked into a roll and heard the telltale beep of one of the mines. He kicked off the ground in a lunge straight through the stairwell doorway. An explosion of light and reduced concussive force trailed him. He was thrown off mark, slamming into the stairwell railing hard, but otherwise, he was okay. The burning sensation at the back of his brain, the one that warned him of coming danger, had died down. Hopefully, that meant only the first floor of the buildings was rigged.
From there, Farrin sped his way up the stairwell to the rooftop. As he had hoped, the rest of this building, at least, was clear. The time-turner belly crawled out the doorway. If Lone Wolf was watching, he would see the door open, but nobody at least. No target. If he wasn't looking, well, the scene was less likely to grab his attention than a student rushing onto the rooftop. The journey ended as Farrin reached the building parapet. He leaned against the stone, waiting for the next ring of Lone Wolf's rifle. Maybe from up here, he could spot the sniper - but he wasn't about to test that theory without so much as the right direction to look.

Another of his peers willingly crossing the line of demarcation. It was one drawn by word of his trouncing those bullies from orientation. Ever since that little scuffle, only a small handful of his classmates dared to enter his grassy domain at the edge of the training fields. One would think his victory over their ilk would draw the student body closer, but maybe he had frightened them off. It wasn't worth the time and thought he was putting into it. A few exceptions aside, he preferred his own company.
"Farrin, Farrin O'Rourke," he offered his name. "N' no need ta' apologize. Whatever keeps yuh' goin n' all that."
Farrin took Jason's hand for a firm shake. Yeah, he preferred his own company but the time-turner wasn't rude. If the fox-fella needed medication, then he needed his medication. Or whatever the heck was going on. It wasn't really Farrin's business. The paws didn't even come as a surprise. Barty, one of the heroes of Above & Beyond, who acted as Farrin's guardian in Japan, had bear-like paws so it wasn't unfamiliar territory.
"N' yeah, I think we do share some classes."
Hero ethics and a few more of their practical classes. Farrin wasn't good with names but it was hard to forget someone that stood out as much as Jason did, even among the varied student body of UAU. The time-turner wasn't about to make conversation of it, but Jason was rather short.
"So, how yuh likin UAU so far? E'erythin yuh though it would be?"
Small talk. Not territory he preferred to navigate often but the fella seemed friendly enough. No reason to turn him away. Meanwhile, Farrin's gaze would shift downhill toward a sparring match between two of their peers. Dissecting combat was one of his favorite pastimes. One of the students grew bone-like weaponry from his arms while the other began to glow with an azure aura. Their match was about to begin.

Weak. He was weak. A reality he was reminded of with every turn of the day. How many times must he look into the broken mirror and find himself lacking? Why was he not enough?
"Dance my puppets, dance."
Farrin stared into the eyes of his other. Was it worth it? Was strength worth the steep price of life levied against Farrin across time? Was it always tipped in the dark's favor?
"Do it. Call upon it and it's yours. The threads will not be satiated otherwise."
How could it not be? Without strength, without convergence, what could be done to deny the deaths his dreams foretold? The connections came at a cost. He'd seen it so many times before. It was a strength that demanded he surrender himself - and it was calling to him. Farrin's eyes warmed to their clock-dial stare.
"Strings can be used in two ways," he struggled through the strangling grasp of his Alter, "to bind, or to control."
Farrin anchored himself to the arm squeezing the life from his throat, then balled defiance in his fist, and fired for the inside of his Alter's elbow. It budged, only just enough for the time-turner to kick the Alter away. He bought a minute pittance of time. None at all really. Only enough to call out to his friend.
"Thea!"
The Alter was on him again, its arms a blur even in his eyes. Farrin struck back. Point for point, match for match, where the two made contact there were brilliant flashes of emerald power. He was weak. The weakest of all his visions, but he was here. He was fighting. And he would never stop fighting.
The Alter's fist landed like a shotgun blast at point-blank range. It carried Farrin across the distance between one of the alley's walls and the other. A reverberating boom echoed up and down the passageway and bricks broke and dust rained. Stony particles and dust tickled the throat and summoned a cough of blood from Farrin's lungs.
"Why?" He coughed again, "why do yuh all choose ta' do this? Ta be villains when yuh could save people?"
The Alter blurred between them, then reappeared just before Farrin.
"We're always the villain - until we're not."
"Th-"
Farrin's words were cut off as the Alter grabbed him by the mane and pulled the time-turner down into his rising knee. Blood splattered the alley, and Farrin fell back against the wall. Why was she just standing there? Why wouldn't she respond? If she wouldn't help, he had to find another way. He was weak, and he needed to be strong. She certainly seemed to be an eccentric. Normally the sort Farrin steered clear of unless necessary but, despite her apparently being older than him, she was the new kid to UAU. If he was the first student she had bumped into, then he really should give her hand.
"Nice ta' meet yuh, Joesphine," he offered, "n' yeah, I could give yuh the lay o' the land if yuh want. Fair warnin though, the campus is rather large."
Grounds Beta and Gamma were essentially their own small cities. While they weren't literally inside the campus walls, they weren't too far away. It was one of the reasons UAU had been built in Tokyo's outskirts, far from the hustle and bustle of the massive metropolis. There were even some woodlands divvying the university from the rest of the world, a line of demarcation to deter curious eyes and ears. It was something Farrin appreciated.
"Well, clearly this is the dorm," he said, pointing behind him, "e'ery room comes packed wit' air conditioning, a personal bathroom, a bed, fridge, closet, n' a balcony. They're fairly large. Some students room together. Others no' so much. The first floor has a common area wit' a communal kitchen n dinin' area n' lounge. Then there's the main lecture hall, the big H lookin buildin yuh must've passed as yuh entered the front gates. That's where the bulk o' are classes are held," he continued, taking a few steps further from the dorm. "Yuh sure yuh wanna commit ta' th' full tour before settin yer stuff in yer room?"

Most crowded the quirkology section so, in turn, Farrin would save that for last. Forced conversations and socializing were chains tethering him to a furnace. He was uncomfortable, usually sweating, and could only focus on how to get the hell out. Luckily, the history aisle he found himself in was rather devoid of people. No peopling was a win. Until he had to people.
Farrin turned to Fu's offer. Okay, this wasn't so bad. No performatives required. As a matter of fact, a little help could do him some good in this instance.
"Eh, actually yeah, I'd appreciate some help findin a few books," he responded, turning fully away from the bookcase, "I'm lookin ta' study up on a few fields. The first on ancient warriors n' warrior cultures n' the like. Anythin' that might give me insight on how they thought n' what made 'em brilliant." A little tactical analysis could go a long way. He didn't need the entirety of their life stories. He needed to know how they thought.
"After that, I'm lookin' fer some material on theoretical physics, mostly on the study o' time if we have somethin' like that. Lastly, some books on quirkology, also related ta' time, like any insights on time quirks and those that may've possessed 'em in the past."
It was impossible to tell if his request ranked as odd in a school like UAU. How many students had passed through these doors and how varied were their areas of interest and expertise? Hero society boomed in the fifty years since the emergence of quirks. Even an elite school such as UAU saw thousands enter and exit its halls since. His request couldn't be that outlandish, right?

Anyone who wasn’t familiar with Tatsuko’s quirk and its method of delivery might reasonably avoid the boost they weren’t aware they were about to receive. Anyone informed, however, held no such excuse. Sada’s quirk allowed her to strengthen her allies, and though the medium was different, Farrin was well acquainted with the potential of such quirks.
“Right,” Farrin replied, stepping back yet another pace.
Chronokinesis ignited, white motes of flames rolling off his form, joined by emerald sparks. His gaze warmed into a golden clock-dial stare. And when he moved, it wasn’t so much a blur as a boom.
“Holy shite,” he laughed.
This was absurd. Farrin already dusted most sports cars. This was more like a fighter jet. He took a few more steps away, just in case he tumbled. Then, he started swinging. His fists cracked like lightning.
“I dun know if yuh can push it any further,” Farrin started, “but if yuh wanna try, I guarantee you’ll no’ find someone else more capable o’ taking it.”
Perhaps his pride got the better of him, but Farrin was confident in his capabilities. He trained incessantly.
