Of course, this doesn’t bother me. Mr. Browning is ever-so short when compared to a stallion such as myself. Seeing over his tiny, diminutive frame is easy… if not for that stupid, ten gallon hat of his! I don’t even want to look at the charisma-less boombox but now he’s taking my date! Wait, omg.

I had done a good job of ignoring her little introduction, but now I was stuck with the rest of the ladies. Why was I the only one in modest attire? That’s the problem with heroes nowadays. Young, attention-seeking women are always looking to display their goods to the world when they cannot compare to me. There’s only one spotlight.

Once the drinks had been traded Mark took a big gulp of liquor and made a face. <"God, I don't ask much, why couldn't you have put that woman fifty miles in pick a direction away from me?"> he says in plain English, Midwestern accent coming through and a little too loud. Wiping his face he lets out a sigh, looking over at Ryota. "I've had the pleasure of working with Penny once, and it took every ounce of will to not go crazy. How do you put up with it on the regular?" He shook his head, walking at Ryota's pace as he looked around the party. "Sorry for dragging you out of there, I needed an excuse to get away. I can deal with people, but lately it's been harder than I'd like."

Mark stops next to a wall, looking back at the bar and then at Ryota. "I would tell you, but to be honest I don't read the beer labels. Ever. I can, but I like to be surprised. Well, some of the time, I like being surprised." There were some surprises he was not prepared for. "Anyways, I've got nothing. For the drive. Unless you wanna come into one of my classes and prey on their souless, dead eyes after I throw them through No Man's Land for the thousandth time. I get the impression it's not a fun exercise. For them, at least."

Ryota ceased his patting on the frog head as instructed, only to point a finger at her. "Now that's the behaviour I'm more familiar with!" Which meant her earlier flirting had to be disingenuous. Sad. "But no more of that from me, promise. I'll even distance myself from you, at least until I finish my conversation with Mark here."

As Ryota pulled him away from the lovely but very energetic women - aptly demonstrated by the hug he received from the beaming sun that was Stellar - he couldn't help but snort at the man's words surely meant for only himself. God, knowing a language outside of your country can be a curse sometimes. It was a miracle he wasn't drinking else that beer would've sprayed out of his mouth.

He responded once he got air back in his system. "By being myself!" He leaned in to whisper. "She finds me more annoying than I find her." The masked hero had no qualms with this though. It wasn't like Penny was the first person to dislike him. "And don't worry about it. I understand it can be difficult to tolerate that energy at the best of times, much less the worse."

While Ryota wasn't surprised about there being no drive - it was just an excuse to get away from the group after all - he did raise his brows at the mention of his supposedly brutal exercise. "Ooh, No Man's Land! I have heard about how unforgiving it is." He tilted his head. "I am curious about what happens in there so I wouldn't mind dropping by! And while I do like challenging the students, your exercise seems to run itself. How would my involvement benefit?"

If anybody ever accused Max of being an unfun stick in the mud, they would be a thousand percent correct. Even though he had given some attempts to be friendly and outgoing in the many places he’s been, he was equally prone to letting friendships dry up out of a lack of personal care towards others.

Being friendly with colleagues he worked with daily, that was easy, it was practically an extension of work; but following that up when he wasn’t on the clock, or sticking his neck out to spend time with others on his own volition as well as his one time, that was something he was frustratingly bad at.

But new places bred new opportunities, that small vain hope in the back of his mind that this new environment would suddenly see a different Max, one that would use the cold reminders of the past to change his ways and step into the light of a new life.

When he gotten his first opportunity, a Halloween party, he had naturally not taken that opportunity until the absolute very last minute, if only because he really didn’t want to start off his tenure at U.A. being ‘that guy’. As a hero, being distant was one thing, as a teacher he probably had more of a responsibility to actually be part of something greater than himself.

That was ultimately the trick, turn a festivity into a job, the objective to ingratiate himself amongst his fellow staff and maybe one time not being the hardass.

It took more than a tiny bit of motivation to push himself into being ‘fun’. Dressing up as a slasher villain, the irony of such a choice lost on him, he had merely picked whatever the bored woman at the counter suggested was ‘hip’.

Yes, he was a forty-five year old that still needed people to dress him. Another fact that was lost on him.

Also he was late to the party, which undoubtedly was a great way to ingratiate himself with others. And furthermore a personal frustration that he’d let himself flake in such a way.

A dry and overly suppressed “Hi.” was the only thing that escaped from behind the mask, his eyes darted around the room, and he quickly chose the ‘safe’ option of instantly making his way to the open bar.

The fact he was both the new guy on campus, as well as hidden under a mask probably didn’t help being recognized. But deep inside he didn’t hate the idea if the entire night was spent in a corner nursing a single drink.

He LOVED wine, and therefor he avoided them like they were poisoned. The chauvinist Frenchman in him both afraid that the wines would not be up to his standards, and also afraid that they did… So a brand of beer that he had never seen before became the choice.

She gave Mai a smile and a wink, quietly letting her know she understood what she meant with her sentiment. ''Ah will! Those little stinkers are doin' great as always.'' She replied in reference to Zenji and Yuzuki, her son and daughter respectively. When Stellar mentioned her gratitude for Iphigenia she beamed. ''Is that so? We all have a lot ta thank her for!'' She felt a bit flustered when Stellar congratulated her. ''She said that did she? T-Thank ya! Ya can train ta be a hero but ya can't train ta be a parent.''

The vibe of the party was great so far, just as relaxed as she had hoped. Well, so long as she remained willfully ignorant of the drama Penny was trying to start. ''Agencies? Me an' Mai here are from the same one. Out here hella reppin' Tranquil Soul, isn't that right?'' She smiled, putting an arm around Mai's shoulder. She was quick to spot Lawbringer as he made his way to the party, but for a while she just observed him, trying to guess who it could be underneath that mask. Definitely not Iphi, unless she had pulled out all the stops with her costume. When he finally came up to the bar she turned and went up to him.

''Hi! Lovin' the costume, yer really scary! Ah'm Apparel on the job, but off duty ya can just call me Kazashi! Wanna join us? We were discussin' hella important things just now an' Ah think ya should be involved!'' She gestured for him to come join the rest of the group.

She had spent most of her night so far mingling, from talking to Starling Soul about the newest developments in her investigation on the tower during the Elementals and Dream World incident to speaking to fellow teachers and pro heroes about what they were up to.[break][break]

She had dressed up as her best friend, and her best friend had dressed up as her. From the distance, she could spot a group of some of her closest friends and coworkers and took the opportunity to approach them when there was a lull in the conversation. “A lot of familiar faces here. Any drink recommendations?” She’d place a hand on Kazashi’s shoulder and give her a small smile before acknowledging the newcomers. “Penny, Max.” She’d give a nod, and then, anticipating a hug from Stellar, she’d accept it, and whenever she was done, she’d take a step back. “She’s around here somewhere, but I’m dressed as Sadako, and she, in turn, is dressed as me. Stellar, how have you been? Enjoying your time at Maxima?”

Yeah, guess what? I can keep my mouth shut, actually. Yes, I have a temper but more importantly I have a strategic mind that guided me this far in my successful life. Okay, so I got divorced ONCE — I promise you it’ll never happen again. Because I’m never getting married because all men are garbage turns out… if only I knew that before wasting the best years of my life living it up with a heartless bastard. The fancy dinners, expensive cars, parties on the yachts…. none of them were… None of… they weren’t… ahem…

“I’m going to be nice and not throw up in my mouth at the thought of Mark and I going on another date together. I will never lose a bet to that man again. Got it?” More information than I should have shared. Shit. What do I do? I gotta remind them how hot I am…

"I'm glad to hear it,"  Mai responded to Kazashi with a genuine smile on her face. In a way she was almost jealous but she had chosen her own path and had no intentions of regretting it. Perhaps one day… Not yet though. There was too much left to be done before she could settle down. Far too much.  "H-Hawaiian, of course!" She replied to Stellar's clarification with several quick nods. "Perhaps I should. I have been meaning to travel for quite a while but the trouble as of late has made it difficult to go on vacation." It was truly a shame but Mai wouldn't give her calling up for the world. Every person she saved and the look in their eyes confirmed her path more than words ever could. Someone had to stand up for justice and why shouldn't that be her? It was for that very reason that she took Penny's words extremely seriously and only narrowly restrained herself from confronting Lone Wolf then and there. Making a scene in the middle of the party would run contrary to its purpose and Starling Soul's wishes. Settling for briefly glaring at his back instead Mai tried to calm herself. She had heard that Mark's behavior could be a bit problematic at times but she'd had no idea that it had escalated to such an extent. That was not something she was able to forgive. Stellar's comment shook her out of it and made her begin to doubt her assumptions. Had she misread the situation? Unfortunately unlike several of her colleagues Mai didn't speak enough English to truly understand the situation. "Ah, indeed," Mai confirmed with a nod when Kazashi slung an arm over her shoulder, bringing her out of her earlier introspection and back into business mode. "If there is anything we can assist or cooperate with please do not hesitate to reach out, miss Stellar." The next arrival wasn't someone she was entirely sure she recognized. Despite her attempts at creating connections Mai was still far from knowing even a fraction of Tokyo's heroes personally and the Halloween costume did not make it easier. Even so she had a hunch. His build was similar to images she'd seen of the newest member of UAU's faculty. "Greetings. Lawbringer, was it? I am Yuki Onna but you may call me Mai. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." She was perhaps a touch more formal than what was required but in her eyes it was better to come off as too respectful than not enough. With some luck nobody had noticed her attempting to instinctively extend her hand for a shake before realizing she'd need to move it around Kazashi to do so. "Ah, Iphigenia. It has been too long," Mai continued in the same formal tone, defaulting to it while she once more caught her bearings. "I hope you both have been well." Mark shrugged, downing the rest of the drink and letting out a sigh. "Honestly? I dunno. After that other exercise Beta's having to go through a lot of rebuilding, so I'm taking the time to revise some of my traps. I have been employin' a few older, more experienced students to play as villains. I'm sure you could help in that manner, too." He brought the empty glass up to his lips, pausing briefly. What kind of drive was Mark even talking about, exactly? It sounded like a stupid enough excuse to get away from the group. Maybe he should just leave it at that.

"Probably better to let you make somethin' up, though. Just tell me the details of the lie, so we both don't look stupid. Whatever a 'drive' even is. Hero work here feel cramped. I ain't used to it." He looked back over at the bar, frowning slightly. "I also didn't think the bar would get swarmed tonight. Guess that's on me."

"Experienced students playing as the villains! Now that's smart- they could keep their Quirks under wraps. As you were aware, someone was keeping distance from me during the other exercise." Such was the drawback of being a front-facing hero: their information was public so anyone could glean their powers and act accordingly. "That being said, I can be the bad guy again! I just have to take a different approach with my Quirk." Him? Using it in secret? Now that would be devastating.

The students were going to learn so much.

Ryota then snorted at the conspiring. "A drive is an event hosted in order to raise money for something, like a bake sale or a gala. As for what we could be running..." He tapped the straw against his mask in thought before- lightbulb! "It could be a marathon! Simple premise of completing a course to raise money for charity."

A laugh escaped him as he shook his head. "And you did decide to stand at the bar when the drinks are free. But not to worry-" The masked man patted Mark on the shoulder. "I got this."

With that he left the cowboy to his devices and quickly made his way to the rest of the group. "Evening everyone, good to see you all again!" He pointed at Not-Sadako and laughed. "Iphigenia! I thought you were the resident counsellor for a second, nicely done!"

Then there was The New Guy^TM. Ryota gasped as directed his finger to him Spiderman-style. "And you! Samesies on the costume! Well, more similarsies but you get the idea- I don't have quite as much of that going on." He gestured at the man's muscle, bulky compared to his own toned but small frame.

He stood next to him as he called out to the frog. "Penny! Anonymous voting is no fun, I want to judge all your choices! Some of us have a fun comparison anyhow!" Ryota pointed between himself and Max. "For example- ladies, who wore it better? Me or him?"

[Mar]

Mar was maybe a little late to the party. Not because she had been busy with work of the heroic or teacher-ic variety, but because her quick power nap had maybe gone on longer than expected. She'd been using a lot of energy lately though, so could you blame her? She doubted anyone would hold it against her, but she hurriedly donned her costume and made her way to join the rest of the teaching staff and visiting heroes unwinding and having fun.

So Mar joined the party wearing a cowboy costume she had modified to account for her tail, a prop lasso wrapped around one arm. Bringing one hand up she greeting everyone with a still-sleepy-sounding: "Howdy, ya'll." in her best attempt at a cowboy impression. Which was comical more than accurate, especially with the half-dead lack of energy she put into it right now. But she didn't pay that any mind, turning her attention to seeing who else was here and what costumes they had come in. She spotted a big frog, a hula girl, a really elaborate princess looking kind of outfit, a mummy, some kind of horror villain, a couple she didn't recognize, two that seemed to be wearing normal clothes but maybe it was some kind of cosplay? And when she spotted Lonewolf, Mar almost wanted to facepalm - she'd gone with cowboy because she figured nobody else would here in Japan! Well, at least his outfit was different enough from hers, going for a more realistic approach or something, that she didn't feel too dumb.

She was still waking up a bit, but she had heard something about a costume contest on the way in? Honestly she wasn't sure who she would vote for, everyone had fun costumes - even if she didn't get what some of them were. Maybe the frog, since it seemed the most unique... She'd give it some thought while seeing who to chat with, maybe check out the drinks and snacks while she was at it?

Mai wasn't entirely sure what to think but the more time passed the more doubtful she was of the veracity of Penny's words. She wasn't entirely certain how to include the fact that they'd apparently been on a date into the equation but her inquiries into the whole matter would be far more subtle than she'd originally intended lest her potential misunderstanding escalate matters. She would still be trying to get to the bottom of the matter however. The consequences of failure to act could be too high. But she digressed, that wasn't something she could address instantly much as it smarted. She should refocus on the conversation to make sure she didn't miss anything else instead. A secret costume vote? Her palms began to sweat at the thought. She wasn't ready for something like that at all. Wasn't something like that meant to be agreed on in advance by the parties being judged? Were things like that just done spontaneously now? Mai gulped. It'd be fine. She knew her anxiety was irrational. Put her against a villain and she'd be cool against a cucumber but a situation like this? Well, that needed some working on, clearly. Did people even still say cool as a cucumber? Mai screamed on the inside even as she forced a smile onto her face. Nothing was wrong here, no sir. Nor did her stature bother her at all right now, especially not when she compared herself to her taller and more mature looking colleagues. "I cannot cast judgement in a matter such as this," Mai responded while keeping her voice as even as possible. "Both look wonderful in their own ways. Besides, can I really call one worse when my own costume is little more than bandages and frayed cloth?" That last statement was absolutely unnecessary. Mai was cringing on the inside. Why did she say that? Wouldn't that look like she was just fishing for compliments? Would they think she was hoping to rely on their pity to score points? Np, it was fine. This was all fine. She'd treat it as a learning experience. This was a shortcoming that could be whittled away to refine herself. Happy thoughts. Happy thoughts.  ...perhaps Tamaya had a point that she'd been patrolling too much and socializing too little as of late, even if she didn't exactly agree with the girl's way of saying it.  "It is good to see you, Mar.
