An entity, because to refer to this thing as a human, a person, didn't track. Silence gripped the moment. All the raving and ridicule ceased. There was only Farrin, the gargantuan set of eyes, and the temporal current around them.
His mounting inadequacies had cost him. How was Farrin to fell such a beast?
"So you understand the futility of resistance then? Because there is another option. One way that might spare you and your friends - if we are to call them that."
If this entity was the cause of all that chaos, if it possessed such strength that it could ruin entire times, what did Farrin have to offer that might spare his own time?
"I am a timeless chorus, join your voice with mine and sing victory everlasting."
It - it wanted him to join it?
If me Chronokinetics are so weak, why would yuh' want me?
And there it was. Hope cast to a Farrin lost at sea. A single thread with which to reel himself in. If he was so weak, his abilities so inept, why would this thing bother to bring Farrin into the fold?
"Even a ripple may one day grow into a tidal wave."
Then that's exactly what Farrin would do. No matter his weakness. No matter his incapability. He would live up to that name, Oberon, and grow from a ripple into the whole goddamn ocean.

Farrin trudged through the world with weights clasped to his back, but his reaction time and sheer martial prowess more than made of for that lack of bodily speed in the eyes of most. Yet, here stood the first of any at UAU that recognized his being held back by his own quirk. Of course, it was unlikely she understood the nature of his handicap, but the observation was certainly noteworthy.
"No' too many 'round these parts that'd call me handiwork slow," he said with a grin.
Though Farrin was only a freshman, Above & Beyond and Hero Prep had armed him with a close-quarters arsenal. He was taught his mother's fighting form and adapted to make it something of his own. It was one more way he honored her memory. And with his Emerald Fist, he had earned a reputation in week one of classes by beating those bullies from orientation black and blue.
"If yuh've any input, Tatsuko, I'm all ears."
It was half invitation, half challenge. Not a physical challenge, Farrin wasn't out to issue any spars yet, but one of expertise. If she thought she knew better, but turned out to be all air, he would be quick to highlight her hubris. If she did possess some potential pointers, he was more than happy to discuss them. Either way, she was just another student to him. Her heroic heritage may as well have flown over his head. Four years was not enough to fully familiarize himself with all of the nation's heroes, even those near the top. That same unfamiliarity worked both ways. His family had become quite notorious, or infamous depending on who the subject of the conversation was, back home. Out here though, just about nobody knew of Morgana the Crimson Light & Balor the Singularity. It was one of the reasons he had finally budged and accepted his fate in another country. Out here, all that mattered was he did his best to become the hero he needed to be, and if this girl's two cents might help get him there - well, he'd listen.

They were the size of small cars, but the building's lobby was rather large which meant quite a few of the machines could fit - which actually worked in Farrin's favor. While students were encouraged to treat hero simulations the same as the real thing, Farrin couldn't help but hold back on the actors playing the part of smaller henchmen. He knew they trained for this, and there were always medical teams on standby, but it just felt wrong not to hold back on them. Villain bots, however, he had no qualms with absolutely destroying.
Farrin dropped onto a knee, balled up his fist, and thrust it into the top of the villain bit. It was like a battering ram through a straw gate. No werewolf huffing and puffing required. He grabbed some of the wiring inside and tore the circuitry apart. The stun gun mounted on the machine's side fired wildly. Another tool to be turned against the enemy. The time-turner pried and jerked the weapon sideways, aiming it at another of the villain bots. Stun rounds peppered its metal exterior harmlessly. That was until it shattered the glass "eye" that served as the machine's primary form of vision.
Another punch delivered to the top of the first villain bot and it collapsed. Already Farrin leaped onto the second bot, repeating the process. Even slowed in his eyes, the henchmen on the second-floor railing, which overlooked the lobby, were almost in position to pose a threat. They brought their firearms to bear, then rained stun round hell on the hero. Except, once again, he was gone.
The second villain bot was riddled with holes, collapsing in place. Farrin, however, appeared just beside four of the goons. He threw a rather restrained uppercut into the first fella's jaw, then kicked the second goon into the third. In a burst of speed, he delivered a landed haymaker against the fourth, then spun and delivered a kick to goons two and three who were still falling. Four down. Only about another dozen to go.

It spoke of alphas, omegas, paradise, and fate, but try as he might, Farrin found himself stuck on the fact that such an entity could exist. He was aware of convergence, the fact that Chronokinesis's innate connection with time meant that any Farrins born with it as their quirk were also connected to one another, but this was something else entirely. Not the manipulation and manifestation of time, but absolute mastery over it.
"It's true, I have grown beyond the trivial trickeries of other temporal quirks, and once I have crossed between the realms of man and god, I shall bring forth that of the greatest of symphonies."
Was he reading Farrin's mind, or had he played with time to such an extent he knew when the time-turner would think any individual thought? Farrin fell down the unending spiral. He watched. He listened, but the entity surrendered nothing of value. There was only the infinite film of a million broken worlds and times and his endless mockery. It was senseless, but he was powerless.
"Precisely. Powerless, ineffectual, disappointing. Weak."
Why couldn't he move? He couldn't even speak. What would the other Farrin do? The one who had made it. The one that was supposed to be here to face such threats. How was it in time's grand design that it was this Farrin standing before such a threat and not the one he saw in his dreams? A hero that defined heroics. A Symbol of Heroism. Such darkness required light of equal measure. Not him. Not someone that rummaged through refuse for a meal and used went months without a change of clothes. That Farrin, Oberon, was one that achieved greatness - that fought tooth and bloody nail to climb his way up. This Farrin only thought of himself. While Oberon was training to take his father down and protect others, Farrin fought to survive until tomorrow. He wasn't some star in the void. He was a wavering candle. And he knew, he just knew, he would once again fall far short of who he was supposed to become.

It was an effortless endeavor to make the duo dance to his tune. How interesting that it was only the two of them and none of the others. Interesting, and ripe with opportunity. Though the Fang was only meant to tail the time-turner, how could he resist? So, standing upon his stage, Melodist played and made marionettes of the young heroes-to-be.
Their fears, the unknown, the uncomfortable. Through his music, it was made manifest. Whatever they were wired to avoid. Whatever saw them sweat with anxiety. Whatever unease turned their stomachs. They were all his playthings so long as his morose melody reached their ears. And so - they danced.
The Fangs were tasked with following the boy, and his friends, to dissect and analyze their capabilities, without becoming overly involved. Magister had already voided that little law the big guy laid down, so why shouldn't Melodist have his moment? Besides, throwing a real threat the kiddos' way would yield far greater intelligence than a few lowly thugs. He was doing his job, committed to the cause and all that. So committed, he would determine who was superior once and for all. The time-turner and his friends of today, or those of yesteryear - those of the time Alpha had actually feared.
Below, Farrin's gaze would lock with his mimic. It was like looking into shattered glass. A him that didn't belong here. "Careful, he's fast" he warned Thea, unaware that the demons she faced weren't the same as those in his eyes. His doppelganger's eyes were blank, devoid of feelings or emotions.
"Why are yuh' 'ere?" Farrin shouted the question as stepped down the alley.
The doppelganger was a blur. Even Farrin's mind could not keep up. His hand was locked around Farrin's throat.
"Weak," the doppelganger taunted, then threw Farrin into the brick building side that made one of the alley's walls. If Thea was paying any mind to what was happening just beside her, she would only find Farrin lifted off the ground, then sent flying into the building.
"So, incredibly weak."

Hero work, or technically student-hero work, was hungry work. Running a few hundred miles each day day probably didn't help his stomach stay full either. What sort of fuel when into keeping the Chronokinetic tank full? Well, all sorts, but it was more about the quantities. Farrin ate - a lot. Would burn it all off by tomorrow regardless. Time, as usual, was on his side... except he was always hungry so maybe not.
With lunch felled, greasing the Chronokinetic gears, Farrin was ready for round two with the training field. In a blink he crossed back into the kitchen, discarded the bread crumbs and refuse into the trash, cleaned and returned his plate, then made for the front door. When the sun set, he would make his way back to Sada's room, but for now there was more training to be done. He still didn't have the whole 'air step' thing down. Far from it, so that would be his focus for the late afternoon hours.
Stepping through the threshold that divided the cool and calm of the dorms and the hasty, erratic world that was the rest of the campus was night and day. One moment it's all quiet, then there's the boom of far off sparring matches and the quirks at play. Dashing out the doors, Farrin had to cut short and step aside as an unfamiliar face appeared to be waiting for something - to enter the dorms perhaps?
"Sorry there, lass," he started, apologizing for nearly bumping into her, "eh, yuh alright? Know where yer' goin?" She looked bewildered? Confused? Something like that. Or was it awe? He didn't recognize the girl but the same could be said for most of his cohort. The truth only became apparent as he looked past her to the luggage being delivered. So that was it. She was new.
"Need any help?"

It was an infinite labyrinth of concrete and reflective metal that looped together every which way and webbed across the grounds. And UAU staff had to build and rebuild it day after day after day. The sort of investment grounds Beta & Gamma required remained a mystery.
Fortunately, such questions didn't really concern Farrin. He couldn't begin to comprehend how it all worked, but it wasn't really his problem. He could respect the nebulous work, but he couldn't understand it - and that wasn't his job. His job, during this extracurricular hero simulation he and his fellow hero department students were highly encouraged to sign up for, was to navigate the labyrinth to locate a simulated bomb, take out the guards tucking it away, and disarm the thing before the timer splayed out on the scoreboard in the distance ran out. He wasn't expected to navigate this maze alone, though. His partner, a student he had met once already, Emilia Hall, was to work with him.
Farrin arrived a few minutes early, warming up on his own until his partner arrived. They still had a few minutes before the buzzer signaled the start of the simulation. Hopefully, Emilia would arrive soon so they could come up with a strategy. In the meantime, the time-turner defaulted to shadowboxing. It was his usual pass time when left to his own devices. His priorities usually looked like Sada > training > sleep. So, training it was. He have a rough idea of what Emilia was capable of after their encounter in one of UAU's other training facilities. Now it was time to see her in action. And it was all absolute pandemonium. Death and destruction run rampant. Concrete spires that reached the skies bursting open and collapsing, crushing all below them. The streets ran red with streams of blood. It wasn't targeted, there existed no rhyme or reason, only chaos.
Why? What do yuh' stand ta' gain from all this?
The entity paused. A moment's consideration perhaps? Fall for the villainy 101 classes and divulge his plans, or acknowledge that doing so might put its plans in jeopardy. Farrin was quite familiar with pride's shadow, conceit. It plagued him early on in his training at Above & Beyond. Barty has ironed that shite right out of him. If Farrin survived this encounter, he was going to need to report everything to Barty. Hopefully, the big floating death stare he was face to face with now was willing to speak.
"Something beyond the scope of your imagination. Now, what to do with you?"
Alright, so it wasn't falling for the villainous monologue. All around Farrin worlds were collapsing, but without context none of it held much meaning. It was all just senseless violence, fire, and death.
"A fate you must abide."
It was rambling again. Farrin wouldn't interrupt. The pulsing in his ribs, the reverberating pain in his chest would have been debilitating enough even had he been able to move. The only play was to observe. To understand. If this was a possibility for his own time, he had to find some means to stop it.

From where the "wind" blew down in the temporal depths was anyone's guess, but the floating pair of eyes seemed to be calling the shots now. Where Farrin was still learning to swim, this entity assumed absolute control. Slow as Farrin could force his deceleration fields, he could not muster temporal stasis. This thing was freezing time itself - or so it appeared.
The reality of the wounds Farrin suffered on his dive were setting in. Searing pain up and down his body. Bruised and blistered. Whenever he woke, if he did, he wouldn't find them along his body in the world above but he would still feel it. The temporal plane was 'real,' it just interacted differently with reality as others knew it. Played by its own rules. It was theorized that the way Farrin saw time, as an ocean of threads, was simply his mind's best attempt at interpreting the information his quirk offered. In that same vein, these wounds were actually burns and bruises, but something else entirely. Something that didn't translate well above. But, again, he'd feel it. He always felt it.
"The stone. The spear. The cauldron. I'll need to find them through different means this time. No Grim. No "Ragnarök.""
This thing appeared to be musing to itself now, almost unaware of Farrin's presence. That, or it simply didn't care. It had lost interest in him.
What do yuh' want? Farrin dared the thought.
That got its attention. The eyes appeared to focus, looming in Farrin until they occupied his vision almost entirely.

One man leaped out of the shadows, then another. A third, fourth, and fifth. They kept coming until Farrin and Freja were entirely surrounded, then the dark curtain broke apart and the shadow-made avians flew up and away.
The time-turner backpedaled a step, but one of the larger thugs behind him wrapped his arms around Farrin in something of a bear hold. Just what was with the absolute shite luck he had when venturing beyond UA's walls? Whatever trouble was stirring, now was not the time to dwell, it was time for action.
Farrin threw his head back and cracked the big fella in the nose. Then, he took on his Irish boxing form, and threw a jab straight into the next closest thug's jaw, sending him rocking backward. "Nope, can't say I do, but any arseholes sprinin up around n' grabbin at a couple o' friends trekkin the city at night are askin fer trouble!" Another thug leaped forward, arms extended as if to grab at Farrin again. The time-turner crouched low, then sprung upward into the crook, delivering another jaw-shot, this time with an uppercut that sent his target airborne.
The thug crashed a few feet behind his buddies, and finally, the gaggle of goons each took a step back. That gave him and Freja some breathing room to work with. It was clear now that the crows were of quirk make, and acted as a transport system, but who did this quirk belong to and why were they targeted? None of the thugs surrounding them stood out as the brains of the operation. These guys couldn't possibly rank much higher than street muscle. None were brandishing their quirks yet despite the whooping Farrin just delivered to three of them. Either they were confident they could still win or were more afraid of running. A thousand thoughts ran through Farrin's mind as he cranked up the temporal powers. White, fiery wisps and emerald sparks crackled around him. His ruby eyes warmed to a golden hue, taking the shape of clock dials. Chronokinesis was fired up in full.
"Yuh ready fer' some trouble, lass?" He asked Freja, making certain she was ready for a fight.

Try as he might, Farrin could not speak. The tides hadn't turned, they had frozen entirely. Stasis subdued all movement. All life. All of time, it appeared. How was it possible? How could such a thing exist?

Each building bled into the periphery as he and Natsumi passed, beaming in on the spire. Once she ascended, after reaching a certain distance, it would become too difficult for him to focus on her and keep the acceleration field around her stable. It would dissipate and she would return to normal speeds when that happened. Still, he could get her close to the building, then she'd only have to handle the ascent.
And so that's exactly what he did. No enemies lied in wait outside of the spire, which made sense. Most hostage situations would see the offenders taking cover within the building. This worked in the students' favor. As they closed in on the front entrance, Farrin simply pointed up. It was time for Natsumi to fly. Meanwhile, he'd make a loud entrance. Loud enough to draw as much attention to the lower levels as possible.
Farrin zoomed right up to the door, leaned back, then thrust his foot forward. A boot-sized imprint kicked dented the door, then flung the metal entrance off its hinges. A mix of smaller villain bots and UAU staff playing low-level thugs immediately met the threat. Firearms packed with stun rounds and a few standouts bringing their quirks to bear opened fire on the student. The concrete flooring just outside the building was pocked full of holes and torn apart. Dust kicked into the air and wafted into the room, but when it finally settled, Farrin was already gone. Farrin's caveman brain was showing. Ignoring his dumb-dumb moment, the young student eyed what was clearly Freja's new best friend. What was it made of? Was there any additional functionality? There was no way something as simple as a stronger metal bat was covering the distance between the quirked and quirkless alone. It had to do something. Hopefully something exciting!
"How so? What's it do?" He asked, now genuinely curious. "N', yeah I guess so. It's no' so different from normal schools. Like, yuh' already learn plenty o' math, algebra, trigonometry, statistics n' the like in secondary schools, right?" He paused, awaiting confirmation before continuing, being that he never really attended a "normal" secondary school. One way or another, he would eventually continue, "but then, so I hear, universities still cover the basics behind each o' those math categories before movin' onta' more advanced stuff. We focused on understandin n' controllin our quirks in Hero Prep. The ethics o' heroism, law, n' so on too. So while I dun' know e'erything UAU has dropped on us so far, I am fairly familiar wit' most o' the content."
Eventually, they would progress to uncharted waters. Hero Prep never taught them to develop Ultimate or Signature attacks. They hadn't provided nearly as many hero simulations either. Only seniors could run the simulations at all and they were far more simplistic than UAU. Teachers rarely sparred with their students, and when they did they held back to extremely noticeable degrees. In contrast, Leonid sparred with Farrin in his first week and nearly broke the time-turner's arm. The intensity was on another scale for more practical training, but the academics remained rather mundane.
"Dun' mention it."
It took guts and who knew what else to see someone quirkless make it into UAU. That was flame he would not see smothered. As long as his own journey was left uninterrupted, he was more than happy to fan that fire actually. Freja was in fact approaching 'friend' territory.
"Was 'ere a few years ago. Heroes that trained me wanted me ta' have some personal kit when I wasn't wit' them. I dun' remember the way exactly since I came from a different direction, but I know it's no' far."
Then the world went dark. A murder of crowds, seemingly spawned from hell, burst into the world just ahead of the pair and circled them both. From afar they were being watched by another enemy with a vested interest in the time-turner. Though this enemy would not reveal themselves yet, it was his turn to play with Farrin and friends. Of course, he didn't see such things always, but he certainly didn't see that comment coming. Most of his peers watched with astonishment as Farrin danced with the Emerald Fist. This girl was critiquing him. Only the thick-skulled turned away constructive criticism. Farrin wasn't the brightest bulb in school, but he was not thick-skulled.
"Eh? What? I mean, strainin' in the sense that I'm trainin' often, sure. But, that's part o' the process. Has been fer' years now."
The past four years had been marked by flying fists and ceaseless work. The heroes of Above & Beyond agency worked him to the bone and he was thankful for it. Three of those years saw him simultaneously attending Hero Prep. Working out. Honing his abilities. These things were as water to the warrior. It was pointless if he wasn't pushing himself. There was, however, always the chance she was catching onto a Chronokinetic caveat to his quirk. Chronokinesis accelerated his passage through time, speeding him up immensely, while in his Temporal State, but his quirk made for a most fickle mistress. Outside of his Temporal State, it actually ate away at his speed, slowing him down. It didn't do much to slow his fists in a fight, but more keen eyes might take notice.

He could slow it further via temporal deceleration, and use it to test this technique mid-air, but his idea was dashed by Jun who appeared to be getting worked up. With a swing of her hammer, she sent it off course, further into the stalagmite field. His shoulders sank, releasing the tension built there and he rolled his neck one way then the other.
"N' I 'preciate the input, but as I was explainin' earlier, this is me focusin' on precision. Yuh' might not see it, but what yer callin' brute force alone, while certainly reliant on me own strength, has more ta' do wit' the precise usage o' me quirk. If I can perfect its execution, really nail down the timing required, I think the output o' the attack will grow exponentially."

Either way, it appeared Jun was leaving for some personal training of her own. If she had some great insight on how he might improve upon a technique tied to a quirk she wasn't familiar with, aside from suggesting he work more on his precision, she kept it to herself. Which was fine with him. It was a bit presumptuous to consistently mislabel his practice entirely as brute force without questioning the nature of the precision involved.
