Sushi didn't rank all that high on the lists of Farrin's favorite foods. As a matter of fact, it sat rather low, closer to another list he wasn't going to bring up right now. That wasn't what kept him quiet, though. The time-turning student was mulling over Miroru's posed question, dissecting his thoughts and feelings for the 'correct' answer.
"Objectively speakin', I believe taskin' a hero wit' such menial work is a misallocation o' valuable resources. A hero pullin' a cat from a tree could be rescuin' people from a natural disaster or arrive at the scene o' the next villain attack that much sooner. That said, if I were a hero n' some cat was caught in a tree around the corner from my patrol, I'd help it. Cats make superb bunkmates, contrary ta' their reputation."
Farrin had spent many a meal with cats before resigning to sleep back home. Plenty of them are friendlier than most humans. Sure, there were a few nasty grouches among every litter, but toss a cat something to eat, and they backed right on down.
"As fer us, unfortunately, this is what a lot o' Hero Prep looked like. Felt more like community service than hero work, but they can't really be expectin' us to stop robberies quite yet, can they? Well, not US us, but our fellow peers."
He still wasn't quite sure what Zenkai could do, but the boy was about a head taller than Farrin and rode a bear. Miroru confirmed already that she knew her way around a scrap. Maybe she wasn't on par with the heroic greats, but none of them were. Still, if there were a robbery, he was sure they could handle it. Of course, the chances of them partaking in such a real-world encounter were slim to nil, so ultimately, what he thought didn't matter... right?

[attr="class","Farrin"] [attr="class","KC1"] [attr="class","FarrinBG"] [attr="class","FarrinTop"] [attr="class","FarrinContent"] This was no Farrin's idea of time well spent, but when pizza, or at least an attempt NY style pizza, the only real pizza, was made the itinerary, his inner New Yorker heeded the call. Sada was pushing for him to be a bit more social, and Barty had hammered it into his head that he would one day need allies, so all the boxes were checked. It wasn't all that bad. How often would he meet fellow New Yorkers? Besides, despite the vast canals that separated the two's personalities, Farrin was slowly taking a liking to the comical giant. Was that due to the equal but opposite demeanor Zenkai possessed, or might it stem from Farrin's sifting dreams? He hadn't the answers.
He took another chomp out of the sliced wonder (that still paled in comparison to home) when trotting hooves stole his attention away from the extra cheesy delight in his hands. When he looked up, past the ticket booth, there were two more zebras vacating the zoo. Behind them, a tiger.
"Ah shite," he cursed, mourning the lunch he would have to dispose of. With a sigh, he set his food on the ticket booth counter, in hopes it might remain intact, and added, "Yeah, I suppose yer right, big guy."
White wisps of temporal flame flew from his form, joined a moment later by the emerald crackles of visible time power. His eyes warmed to a golden hue, then took the shape of cock dials. With a wave of the hand, a lightly touched field of green blocked the big kitty off from the zebra. The moment the tiger touched the field, it slowed to a crawl.
"I can slow most o' 'em down, but yer gonna need ta' wrangle the bigger beasties!"
Heading the animals off was no problem, not at time-turned speeds, but Zenkai's impressive size and stature was not unlike a gorilla's. The larger animals would pay him heed to his presence without him having to potentially hurt them. Farrin would have to smack some of them around to establish dominance, and somehow he didn't feel animal abuse made for memorable and great heroes.

Crowds were common back home, but crowds could be dangerous. He navigated them as sailors did the sea, watching for which tides he might ride and which might see the ship capsized. What current was he riding now? The former or the latter.
"Yeah, I just," he stopped, distracted by that damn itch, "I just - uh"
It was like someone placed a nail on the back of his head, then slammed it home with a mallet. A grimace carved itself into Farrin's face, but only for the briefest moment, almost an involuntary twitch the unfamiliarly familiar washed over him - then it was gone.
"Just finished up some trainin', lad," he responded to the giant riding and equally giant bear.
Farrin was fairly tall, but the big fella here was nearly that tiger girl's height. And when another of the newcomers, a lithe little thing that approached from the crowd's flank, asked about the nature of big man's bear, Farrin couldn't help but echo the question. Mentally, at least. Just what the hell was pet bear doing on campus?
For now, he'd allocate those rather meager social skills to the first girl that approached, Robin. "Didn't expect ta' see much in the way o' firearms bein' integrated wit' anyone's trainin' here. What exactly are yuh' workin' wit' there?"
Whatever the weapon, she planned on using non-lethal rounds, right? Heroes were only supposed to kill as an absolute last resort. Would she gun down some pickpocket while on patrol?
He pushed the thought aside. This was getting uncomfortable, but both Sada and Barty had been pushing him to make an effort with those aforementioned meager social skills. Internally, he groaned. People were loud. Too many at once was no better than sifting. Seeing and hearing far too much, all at the same time. He resigned himself to the obligation.
"Oi, how 'bout we get some more names," he said, his sights set on Zenkai, then Mattea as he continued, "how 'bout you big fella, n' you over there."
Though some appeared to know each other already, and a few names were previously exchanged, he went through the motions again. "I'm Farrin, this one 'ere's Miroru, n' the lass here is Robin," he said, pointing to each student respectively. That wasn't too bad, right? Gotta respect a person's bodily autonomy. Consent and all that. Freja was both absolutely right and entirely wrong. Yes, to a novice, there was plenty of micromanagement in overcoming the body's natural instinct in the face of danger. But practice and experience were like water against stone. It took hours. Months. Years even, but eventually, water eroded all. Luckily, this wouldn't take quite as long waterfalls against the rocks below, but it would still require quite an investment.
Assuming Freja was okay with him making a few micro-adjustments to her stance, he would guide her left shoulder forward a tad and pull back her right to create that narrower target profile and give her upper body more torque when swinging a cross-jab when the time came. "Pull yer' right foot back just a smidge more, too" he added before backing away and inspecting the finished product. Imperfect, but perfection was a mountain he continued to climb to this day, and from where he stood, there was no view of the top.
"This'll work," he said before drawing his fists up. "I'm no' gonna swing at yuh', but just watch how me' body moves wit' the punches."
He demonstrated a few more left jabs followed by two heavy cross shots. The lefts didn't see as much turn of the torso, but his weight was certainly packed behind the cross shots.
"Punchin' is just as much about speed n' bodily movement as it is yer arm strength. More so even, I'd say. All the strength in the world won't see yuh' throw a proper punch. Sure, yuh might hurt someone far weaker than yerself, but ta' approach a learned opponent, yuh' need technique. Now give it a go yerself; just take a few jabs at the air. Pretend it's the biggest bastard yuh' know."

Perhaps he didn't rank among the best fighters in the world or even the city, but he could count on his hands how many people he had met that bested him. Of course, he had only met so many people compared to the population, so maybe that wasn't saying much. Still, he did not lack in confidence, not in this regard at least.
The lion's roar demanded attention from all within the jungle, even if it was a concrete jungle, and Farrin was the only other beast present. His final jab cut short in the air, and Farrin spun to face the approaching apex predator. The smile had Farrin feeling as though his name had been scribbled across the lunch menu - but he didn't show it. He would not recoil though. Confidence in the face of all things. The opportunity he had been provided today would leave much to learn, and he was nothing if not a dedicated student. Destiny had come calling, and it was not a call he would leave unanswered.
"Appreciated, Leonid-sir," he started, "N' yer on the money there, sir. It's a form o' Irish bare-knuckled boxin'. Been trainin' n' refinin' it fer about four years now. One year wit' the heroes o' a nearby agency, Above & Beyond, n' three years in a Hero Prep school."
Above & Beyond. Despite its shimmering and massive exterior, it wasn't the largest agency out there, but its heroes functioned as his guardians while in Japan. Old friends of his mother's from her hero days. The closest he had to family outside of Sada and his nana back in Ireland. Real pains in the asses too.
"I appreciate yuh' comin' out 'ere ta' help me out. I'm sure there's plenty more ta' meet still, but I've no' found many o' my peers willin' ta' train together after me' first few bouts."
Those first few 'bouts' were with the loudmouths that laughed at Freja during orientation. What sort of heroes would knock someone down rather than pick them up? Then again, he certainly enjoyed knocking them on their asses. Perspective.
"I also wanted ta' take me' own measure against someone wit' real experience. Hero Prep has active-hero staff as well, but they're no' so inclined ta' show real capabilities."
That was high school. Teachers, even hero-teachers, didn't want to risk hurting their students, but villainy would not be so soft on them. Here, at UAU, he didn't expect their educators to go so easy.

It was to be expected. Anyone that made it through the entrance exam was familiar with the smaller bots like this. Though they were bigger than the two students, they were far from the larger and stronger machines that awaited he and his peers during the exam. No, if robots were being used here, it was to stoke the students' confidence. That was his bet. And it worked.
"Straight through," he said. "They already know we're 'ere, no sense givin' them more time ta' entrench themselves."
Stealth had vacated the premises long ago. Was it impatience, ego, or tactically sound thinking that won out? He wasn't sure, but there was no more time. A real hostage situation only became more and more dangerous as time went on, and the crooks' nerves drove them to action.
Farrin darted for the door and kicked it once, twice, then with a third time and blew the thing off its hinges. No matter what it was that drove him down this most direct path, he would have to live with that decision now. A decision that saw a slew of stun rounds incoming on his position.
With a wave of the hand, and slight translucent-emerald field flared alive before the time-turner. Each round that passed into it slowed to a crawl. He was fast. Incredibly fast. Though not fast enough to catch them all.
A rogue round caught his left shoulder, knocking the boy back a step. The impact wasn't enough to put him on his ass, nor did it disable the arm entirely, but the numbing agent was working its way over his shoulder. Temporal acceleration would push him toward the worst of it all the sooner, but he would also recover faster. An opening had been made, though, and with a wall of temporal deceleration a few meters into the dark lobby, the enemies' focus locked on Farrin, Shana might have room to sprint inside and start causing some chaos. It was like a game, they would have to take turns occupying the enemy's attention.
"How about yuh' show 'em those claws!" He offered Shana the idea.
Once she got in and did some damage, he could hit the enemies, whoever they were, when their backs were turned.

An infinite labyrinth of concrete and reflective metal that danced and looped together every which way. And this was a place the staff of UAU had to build and rebuild day after day after day. Exactly what sort of investments were made to erect this campus's walls and keep it all in one piece despite the years of abuse at the hands of its student body?
These were questions Farrin simply did not have the answer to. He couldn't begin to comprehend how it all worked. Luckily, that wasn't his problem. He could respect the nebulous work, but he couldn't understand it - and that wasn't his job. His job, during this extracurricular he and his fellow hero department students, were highly encouraged to sign up for, was to navigate the mock warehouse district to locate a simulated bomb, take out the guards tucking it away, and disarming the thing before the timer splayed out on the scoreboard in the distance ran out. He wasn't expected to navigate this maze alone, though. His partner, another student: Auden Verchetty, was to work with him.
Farrin arrived a few minutes early, warming up on his own until his partner arrived. They still had a few minutes before the buzzer signaled the start of the simulation, but worry was creeping in at the periphery of his mind. What if Auden didn't show up? Was he expected to handle the simulation alone? The villains wouldn't wait for one hero to join another to stop them in the field.
Hopefully, that wouldn't be the case. So, the time-turner defaulted to shadowboxing. It was his usual pass time when left to his own devices. His priorities usually looked like Sada > training > sleep. Sada wasn't here, so... training it was. Who was this Phoenix student? He'd never met them before, but he hadn't met plenty of the student body. Well, he'd sure find out soon.

It took a real oddball to out oneself before the lie even began. Farrin preferred oddballs. He'd walked Wall Street a thousand times, usually being chased off as the rapscallion he was. The point is: the suits had the money, but the buskers were fun.
Not the most apt analogy. The fire-haired fox wanted to scrap. Regularly. He wasn't good with hitting girls, but villainy was sure to come in all shapes and sizes. And, though it wasn't quite the same, he had trained Sada. Miroru didn't come off as inexperienced, though. She noted the odd heaviness of his regular movement. It was courtesy of Chronokinesis. The quirk was an absolute boon in battle, but it weighted him, like sapping time from its turner, while outside of his temporal state. Not enough that it dragged his speech or was even noticeable to most - but enough that he wasn't taking any track runners without firing up his quirk for real.
"Right as rain, lass. I've no' touched on me' quirk yet," he started toward the earlier of her comments. "Somethin' some o' our fellow freshmen dun' seem ta' understand is that no matter yer quirk, in this line o' work, yer eventually gonna need ta' get yer hands dirty." He didn't mean that in any figurative sense. At one point or another, any hero that intended to actually tackle villainy was bound to get caught up close and personal. Bloodied knuckles would become quite the norm outside these walls. No sense avoiding it.
"If it's a scrappin' partner yer lookin' fer, I'm more than game. I assume that whether yuh' went wit' yer original plan ta' offer me aid or ta' ask fer some help yerself, that means yuv' a fair bit o' experience already, though. Care ta' show me?"
Curiosity again, though this time with the slightest tinge of challenge. Farrin was no bully, but deep in his blood and bones, there was part of him that thoroughly enjoyed a good fight. Not the kind that broke someone so badly they could never walk again, but a friendly match. Something both combatants walk away from. Something he was often denied before arriving in Japan. Yup. A sparring partner. That he was certainly on board with.

Day in and day out, whenever Farrin wasn't with Sada, he was training up atop his grassy hill at the edge of UA's training grounds. Calisthenics was the name of the game - at least for a few more minutes. The vast expanse of greenery was one of the hill's advantages over the gravel of the training fields. Perfect for exactly this sort of exercise.
Push-ups. Simple and effective. He had stopped keeping count a while ago. Numbers matter little when you're not looking to finish anytime soon. So he kept on going. Pressing up and down against the grass. Seconds ticked to minutes, which ticked into nearly an hour until finally, Farrin decided it was time to take to that good ol' crown jewel again.
When he stood, it was to the sight of his peers running the track or sparing in the makeshift arenas. Only a handful of students had approached him since he'd taught those of his peers that saw it fit to laugh at Freja during orientation a lesson. Solitude was not an unwelcome guest. He had Sada. Who else did he need?
A silent gale whisked away a few beads of sweat and cast them to the wind.
"Well, back to it," he muttered, watching as a few speedsters tore up the track.
Part of him was tempted to partake in their little race, but he wasn't finished with his daily regime. The young student set his feet shoulder distance apart, drew his right foot back a bit, tightened his right fist close to the chest, and pointed his left fist out. This was the Emerald Fist, and so he began to shadowbox the wind.

If Farrin wasn't with Sada, in class, or asleep, he was up on his hill training. Props to Miroru for being up and at it so early though. Even standing among the giants of UA, few were tackling training this early on the weekend. A half hour in and Farrin had already worked up quite the sweat.
The swings never stopped. His fists flew like machine gun fire with jabs that made splinters of planks. He may not yet become the beast he was in another time, but he was well on his way. Speaking of other times. The girl on approach, Miroru as she had introduced herself the other day, was another name that felt like he was already supposed to be familiar with, but wasn't outside orientation and their first real introduction. Was he being haunted by the vestiges of another time, another place? Perhaps.

He gave Freja, his quirkless peer some pointers the other day, but from little he understood, Miroru came from a hero family of some sort. Was she not trained to be the inheritor of some heroic legacy? But then, who really knew? Nobody's story was quite so straightforward no matter what media and the internet would have you believe.
Farrin hooked his left hand over his right shoulder, then started to stretch the arm. "I'm no' tryin' ta' chase ya away, just curious," he clarified. Casting the first stone wasn't really his thing. A several-year stretch of homelessness those years ago hadn't broken his mother's instilled manners entirely. Just mostly. And afterwards, Barty made it a point to always set him right. Training was important, but he wasn't going to blow people off.

Minutes ticked into hours spent in training. In his life before Japan, Farrin would have scoured the trashcan closest to McDonalds for his next meal. Training? Who the hell had time for that? Now - now things were different. Or were they the same? Time impressed itself into the dreamscape. Sometimes he saw things. Sometimes he saw people. All of it so foreign, yet so familiar. Names all on the tip of his tongue. Places he should know but didn't. A race track. Bicycles. A track of soil and sand kicked into the wind. A tournament. A burger joint. A funeral.
"Fer feck's sake," he sighed, discarding such thoughts in favor of his more immediate concerns.
Namely: food. Nothing in the kitchen, which had already been raided, that didn't require cooking. A few protein bars squared out the pockets of his workout attire, and that was about all he had on him. A particularly loud and quite anime growl rose from his stomach. Yes, he had trained like a madman, but now his body demanded its due.
Sweat trickled down the lion's mane still. Sore muscles demanded both rest and restitution. He ceded his body to a chair. One of the seats around a long stable just outside the common room kitchen. From there, one could see who was coming and going from the freshmen dorm. He was still famished, but at least his muscles weren't demanding he collapse on the spot.
It was relatively quiet, at least. A few students retreated from the day, others ready to wander the coming night. None thrust any sort of expectation on the time-turning lad. He needed to go upstairs, rest a few, then head to the cafeteria to get some grub, but slumping back into his seat - this was getting kind of comfortable.
Slowly, and against his every protest, his eyes shut. Another dream. Another story.

More specifically, someone. It had struck him during a recent training session with one of the university's professors that his lack of ranged options was going to be more of problem than he originally anticipated. Toiling away in his room, scribbling some rough parameters and, perhaps, a basic design, he had come up with a potential answer to his problem - but not one he could create alone. Simply put, he was smart but not SMART smart and he knew.
"C'mon now, where is e'eryone?"
Though he knew the university's department of support to be quite full, it appeared he had come on the wrong day. Or something like that. There wasn't a soul in site! Both interior and exterior lights bathed the halls, equipment laid strewn across the many tables in each room he peeked in on, but there were no bodies around. Where did everyone go?
"Hello!" He called out a little louder than normal, "anybody home?"
"Think I wandered inta the twilight zone or some shite."
Farrin wasn't one to rely on a crutch, but if throwing together some gear might see more lives saved, then he'd forgo his pride, because that's what he needed to do. The problem was he sure wasn't building the thing himself. There were greater minds and an entire department dedicated to such a cause. He just had to find one of those greater minds first.
One opened one door after another, finding not a single student, until he finally did.

Normally, this place was reserved for rescue simulations or to test the students against more widespread villain attacks, but seeing as it wasn't reserved for any such classes today, Farrin thought it was the best location for his personal training session. If he wanted to train against someone of strength enough that they might feel like a true villain, then where better than a city already in ruin? No sense obligating UAU staff to fix up Grounds Beta after they finished when there was a ruined city right here.
Maybe it was a bit presumptuous of a freshman to ask a UAU professor like Leonid, with so much experience under his belt, to come play villain in a personal training session, but who better to play that part? Farrin was strong. He felt it in every swing of his fist. The speed of every jab. The electric pulse in his veins whenever he entered Chronokinesis's temporal state. But before moving to Japan, he lived on the streets. He possessed self-awareness enough to know that had done some damage to his headspace. No matter how high he climbed in the years since he continued to question if he had what it took to be something truly great. To be somebody that saved people.
Farrin's footwork was nothing short of dance, a dance between the rubble as he shadowboxed an enemy of the imagination. Jabs fired like bullets, and then he brought the hammer of his cross down. Yeah, he had the strength and technique for this line of work. The time-turner's plight - was one of spirit.

More than a few students in Hero Prep lost teeth targeting Farrin as a "stupid foreigner with an equally dumb accent," but the Irish barb never came. Freja was quick to clarify she meant him no insult, so before uttering a word, his calm had been restored.
"Yup. That's me, Farrin O'Rourke."
He probably should have offered his name to begin with, but they were past that now. On to more important things. Like training. Before his life in Japan, Farrin's training consisted of pickpocketing, usually without success, or basically doing the bare minimum to stay alive. Barty, his guardian in Japan, may have been a pain in the ass, but he sure taught Farrin a lot - and that was before Hero Prep. Now, the time-turner had some pride in capabilities. Yeah, damn right he was pretty strong. He had worked hard for it too. Had to remind himself often that those days living on the streets were well behind him now. He had grown into someone capable of doing good - he hoped.
"I'd like ta' think so, yes," he said, putter a stopper on his pride, "n' of course I can."
Farrin firmed his stance and set his feet about shoulder distance apart, with his right foot positioned back a bit, narrowing his profile. His right fist was clutched close to the chest, his left pointed out and away from the body. It was an odd twist on what most people thought was a traditional boxing stance.
"The base o' me fightin' style is called Dornálaíocht, stems from Irish bareknuckled boxin'. I dun' know how familiar yuh are wit' boxin', but that stance n' style people think o' from old television matches assumes yer wearin' gloves, which naturally add some mass ta' yer fists, makin defense easier."
Where traditional boxers kept their fists kind of close to one another, Farrin kept his right held back a bit still. He jabbed a few times with his left fist, then chopped it from side to side, and finally brought the hammer down, rotating his upper body with a heavy right cross-jab. Maybe the speed looked impressive, but ultimately he was punching air. Not many bells and whistles he could add to the demonstration.
"When yuh dun' have that extra mass, it's smart ta' allocate yer tools correctly. Me' left fist is used fer light jabs, ta try n' create an opening or for deflectin' enemy blows by interceptin' them, hence those little side ta' side chops. Meanwhile, my right is the wreckin ball I'll use when I create an openin'. It's no sooo different from traditional boxin' but lackin the mass ta' just hold yer hands up ta defend, we compensate by usin' the left more as protection."
When Farrin finished, he relaxed his body and faced Freja. He didn't make it sound overly complicated, right? Any layman could pick that up. Again, he hoped.
"Got all that? Wanna give it a go?"

He recognized the giant from orientation. She had caused quite a bit of commotion, her demeanor was a mix of frightful and fierce then. Now? Not so much. Farrin cut his warmup to a halt, turning his attention upward to look Shana in the eyes. She was a head taller than him. Farrin was a tall guy, but Shana and Zenkai were truly giants.
"Takes more than a lil' warmup ta' wear me out, lass," He replied, a cocky grin growing across his face, "N' I promise yuh' yu'll need no' carry me anywhere."
There were certain aspects of heroism Farrin was not confident he would live up to, but drills and such measures of physical capability? He learned a lot these past four years. This stuff - he could do all day. He stretched his arms, cracked his knuckles, and rolled his head from side to side. Shana certainly had one thing right, though. The drill was about to begin.
"Yuh' always speak in the third person?" He asked, but before the tigress could answer, an alarm rang, signaling the start of the simulation.
"Well, let's get to it."
With that, he hopped in place one last time, then sprung down the street towards the building their hostage was being held in. Pearlescent wisps burned alive around the time-turner swiftly joined by crackling emerald sparks. Farrin entered his temporal state, keeping pace with Shana as the two approached the building.
Parked out front were two large machines. They weren't unlike those from the entrance exam. They were fairly large but surprisingly brittle. Attached to the top of each machine, though, was an automatic firearm. It didn't use live munitions, of course, but stun rounds that would numb any part of the body the projectiles made contact with. Each of the machines opened fire, and so Farrin leaped. He landed atop the robot to the left and planted his fist through the gun and into the top of the machine. He tugged out the wiring, putting the first threat down, and leaving the other robot to Shana.
